Rush's Vapor Trails Remixed debuts at #35 on the Billboard 200
9:37AM EST | comments (9) |

UPDATE - 10/11@3:31PM: New poll! I'm asking everyone what they think of the remix compared to the original 2002 release. Do you like them both? Hate them both? Never liked the original, but like the remix? Please take the poll and let us know.

Rush released the long-awaited remix/remaster of Vapor Trails last Monday on September 30th and the album has debuted on the Billboard 200 album charts at #35 (thanks Sean). It's interesting to note that they are not considering the album's position on the chart as a reentry, like what was done with the Moving Pictures and 2112 deluxe editions when they reentered the charts. So it's not clear whether the sales of the remix will count towards the total album sales used to determine Gold/Platinum status by the RIAA. The album also debuted at #9 on the Rock Albums chart and #3 on the Hard Rock albums chart. For my current poll I'm asking everyone which song from Vapor Trails they think benefited the most from the remix. Please take the poll and let us know if you haven't already. You can order the Vapor Trails remix on CD or on 180g vinyl, and order the Atlantic-era The Studio Albums 1989-2007 box set (which also contains the remix) here.

I agree that Rush/Ray/Anthem could be doing more to promote this release as well as other things. I was just watching an interview with Geddy and Alex from right after VT was released in 2002. They were talking about all of the things that they could/should do to promote themselves, but don't. Their priority is making the music, not selling the music.

Boxset is No 23 in the British Rock Chart.

"Atlantic/Rhino could care less as it is just getting back the money it sank into it originally so it is nothing but pure profit for them and they were not about to lay out a dime of promotion for it so they didn't."

Don't you mean they "couldn't care less"? Saying they "could" care less implies that they cared, which is not what I think you were trying to say.

#4....ahem....If you, Sir, are implying that I, Mr. Ray Danniels, (I, er, manage the group) have not provided the funds nor direction to properly promote this release, then I bid you "Adieu"

By the way, what a fantastic looking mole....may I touch it?

#35. It probably could have gotten as high as 11 or 10 had it been available in stores. I walked into 5 Best Buy's and it was not in any of them, as a matter of fact the clerks in the stores went to their computer's to see if they could order them to the store for pick up. I said I could do that at my house. None of them had the box set either yet Amazon has shown the box set sold out all week long and that didn't chart at all which begs the question how many did they print? 1,000 copies? I got my Vapor Trails re-mix and box set at Hastings where they had a total of 1 copy of each in stock.

Personally, I was hoping this re-mix was going to sell more and chart much higher and give the band more credence to do this with other records in their catalog. As of right now selling about 9,000 copies it looks like all it did was cover the manufacturing costs, recoup Botrill's fee, and shut up the vocal 10,000 or so people who have bitched for this for a decade.

I don't fault the band for this one. Atlantic/Rhino could care less as it is just getting back the money it sank into it originally so it is nothing but pure profit for them and they were not about to lay out a dime of promotion for it so they didn't. Mercury/Island does the same thing with re-issues and old videos that go to dvd or whatever little to no promotion. Alex, Geddy, and David have been the ones doing the leg work to get the word out that the band has re-mixed this record and people should give it another try. I will say this though, their Facebook page has like 1.5 million less fans than Dream Theater does. How is this even possible? Their Twitter feed is weak as hell as well. I would have been blasting the hell out of this every day leading up to it and since it went on sale while hyping Clockwork Angels live for pre-order. Instead you just get a few mentions and a photo and that's it.

It would be a shame if VP doesn't go gold because of this. But the new mix is worth that and a lot more!

I would be surprised if the remix version counts towards RIAA status for the original. They'll probably (and correctly, IMO) treat it like a new release, a la "Let It Be... Naked."
