The new documentary on the late Neil Peart titled No One's Disciple held its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this past Wednesday evening in the Princess of Wales Theatre, and both Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson along with drummer Chad Smith were there. All 3 ran the red carpet interview gauntlet, and there are several clips available to check out in this post, such as this footage from the Canadian Press where they also chat with the filmmakers. The trio were also interviewed for the CBC's Q with Tom Power, and that interview is now available for listening at this location or wherever you get your podcasts. It should also be up on YouTube within the next few days. They spend a good bit talking about the film, but most of the interview just focuses on stories about Neil. Here's Geddy chatting about the first lyrics that Neil ever wrote for the band - the lyrics for Fly By Night's Beneath, Between and Behind:
... [plays a snippet of the song] My first impression was, "that's a mouthful!" (laughs) So the song had to be fast and because the song had such a fury behind it - it's really a fired up song. I had to get these words out in a furious way, and so - just hearing it now for split second - how did anyone ever understand a word I said? (laughs) The words were coming out so fast ... I couldn't sing someone else's lyrics if I didn't feel either sympathetic with what he was saying, or could put myself in that role as an actor - empathizing with the part. So we did talk about each of these songs in depth sometimes. I had to understand clearly what he was getting at. What was he trying to put through, because Alex and I had to write the song, emphasize the right parts of the song. If you don't understand what he's saying, how do you do that? ...
