The late Neil Peart grew up in the St. Catharines, Ontario community of Port Dalhousie, the lakefront home of Lakeside Park which inspired the lyrics to the 1975 Rush song of the same name. Last year the St. Catharines City Council, with the full support of the community, voted to name the newly rebuilt pavilion at Lakeside Park the Neil Peart Pavilion at Lakeside Park in honor of the hometown icon who passed away in January of 2020. The Council also established the Neil Peart Commemorative Task Force, with the objective to commission a public work of art commemorating Peart's life and legacy. Earlier this year the city officially began welcoming artists to submit requests for pre-qualification via the city's website, and accepted submissions through March 29th. Earlier this morning the Task Force revealed the shortlist of artists and officially launched a fundraising campaign for the Memorial. From the press release:

"We have seen an incredible outpouring of support since the passing of Neil Peart, including interest from across the globe inquiring as to how people could support the creation of a memorial," said Mayor Walter Sendzik. "The launch of the online fundraising efforts provides an opportunity for Rush fans around the world to contribute to this important project. The memorial will be an enduring tribute to an amazing musician, lyricist and author who called St. Catharines his hometown during his formative years - and a beacon for Rush fans to visit our community for years to come."

The Neil Peart Commemorative Task Force, chaired by David DeRocco, has been meeting since July 2020, reviewing options for the type and location of a memorial. Selection of an artist and artwork is currently underway. Following a request for pre-qualification, the task force recently selected the bids from seven recommended artists, including:

* A Day On The Bridge Inc.
* IDS Integrative Design Strategies Inc.
* Morgan Sculpture Inc.
* R.J. Burnside & Associates Ltd.
* Ruth Abernethy
* Ted Fullerton
* The Planning Partnership

"We're excited to reach another milestone, and finally provide supporters of this project a way to contribute to Neil's memorial," said Neil Peart Commemorative Task Force Chair David DeRocco. "We know how important this project is to the international community of fans of both Neil and Rush, but it's also going to be an important artistic showpiece for the local community who flock to Lakeside Park year-round."

DeRocco added that the sooner the task force can achieve its fundraising objectives through the generosity of Peart's fans, the sooner the community and his fans will be able to see the results.

The commemorative work of art will contribute to the identity and character of the area and recognize the contributions of Peart to Canadian and world music, making it a beacon for Rush fans to visit for years to come.

"The Neil Peart Commemorative Task Force has done a fantastic job of making this project a reality," said Manager of Business Planning and Strategic Services Eric Lamothe. "I look forward to celebrating the installation of the public work of art at Lakeside Park with our community in the future." ...
