Rush makes Billboard's list of Music's Top 40 Money Makers
1:15PM EST | comments (37) |

Rush moneyBillboard has compiled a list of the 40 highest-paid musicians of the past 12 months and Rush made the cut coming in at #35 with a total of $9,050,583.42 (thanks teckler). Rush also made the list last year, coming in slightly higher at #28 despite making slightly less revenue ($8,719,834.30). Other rock acts that came in higher than Rush were Imagine Dragons (#31), Phish (#25), Trans-Siberian Orchestra (#24), The Eagles (#22), Paul McCartney (#21), Dave Matthews Band (#19), Fleetwood Mac (#10), The Rolling Stones (#5), and Bon Jovi (#4). Topping the list was Taylor Swift with a whopping total of $39,699,575.60. The artists were ranked by U.S. earnings calculated from touring and music sales (including digital and streaming), but excluding revenue from sponsorship and merchandising. You can check out the entire list at this location.

#35- Also agree with you on the possibility of one more tour and that Geddy's voice is "shaky". I've noticed that ,since around the Time Machine tour especially. I find it hard to listen to, when he's singing live. Sounds fine on recorded material though.

#35- I agree with you. I think the 9 million is Rush's take home, AFTER all their overhead, crew, manager ,etc is paid. I think the gross amount would be way,way higher than 9 million , if it was before overhead, crew, manager is covered. So that would mean more like about 3 million for each of them.

It appears that this is the NET worth of the band for the tour. After all expenses paid, this is the profit for the guys. Don't blame Ray Daniels. The band pays their crew well and keep tix prices reasonable for a show that I bet costs a bunch to put on.

I'm sure the merch numbers are impressive and would love to see how RUSH fared in that department.

They've made their money and really don't need to tour again (gasp!). I would imagine one more tour is on the horizon. Geddy's voice is getting shaky with age, and that's tough for me to admit. I'm impressed he's been able to keep going this long!

#32 Still, that means each of the boys probably nets somewhere in the neighborhood of a million bucks a piece, or at least in the six digits. Not bad for a few months work.

That's why I figure they don't have opening acts anymore. It would dilute their take a bit. When you're a touring act with all the members crested sixty, every tour you can push out just makes your retirement all the more comfortable.

I'll wager they had to tie Ray up and refuse to feed him to let them have the Clockwork Angels String Ensemble on board, because that must have raised costs pretty substantially.

Bon Jovi?!!!

Jeez... Who knew?

Interesting figures indeed. They would need to split this 3 ways or 4 with Ray plus crew expenses etc but wont be too stung as they have been doing this for 40 yrs albeit smaller amounts in early yrs. Of course they dont play huge venues like some of the bands or charge £400 like the Stones.
Good luck the them-they give wonderful value more than any band I can name.

#30 IF what you say is true, then I will start a petition with the White House to have Mister Ray Danniels (ok, cue the "if that's his real name") fired for dereliction of duty.

So basically it is up to Anthem to make a request to Atlantic, Roadrunner, Rounder, Island/Mercury to request an audit and report and hand it over to the RIAA. Ditto the albums and DVD sales which for some insane reason a proper audit request has not been done since 2010 in the U.S., we all know Time Machine on Blu Ray and DVD and Clockwork Angels Live are certified many times over since 2010 but no request has been made.

New "Combined" Award

Read about the RIAA's NEW "Combined" Digital Single Award requirements and details here.

RIAA AND GR&F CERTIFICATION AUDIT REQUIREMENTS
RIAA "COMBINED" DIGITAL SINGLE AWARD
GOLD, PLATINUM AND MULTI-PLATINUM RIAA CERTIFICATIONS

General Requirements:

Units are defined as follows:
Each permanent digital download counts as 1 Unit for certification purposes.
100 on-demand audio and/or video streams will count as 1 Unit for certification purposes.

Gold - 500,000 Units (For example, this means a Gold certification can now be earned by selling 500,000 permanent downloads, or some lesser number of permanent downloads plus achieving a certain number of on-demand streams, over the lifetime of a song)
Platinum - 1,000,000 Units
Multi-Platinum - 2,000,000 Units (increments of 1,000,000 thereafter)

Maintaining the digital single award program consistent with that of the existing Gold and Platinum Program, all requests for certification must come directly from the record label/company to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

The record company is responsible for providing track information including artist, title, music label, running time and release date directly to RIAA. Sales information must be provided to the firm Gelfand, Rennert and Feldman, LLP (GR&F) for verification.

Digital downloads are defined as tracks derived from a single sound recording and distributed directly or licensed from a record label for distribution from a legitimate online service that provides financial compensation to the record labels (Digital Service Providers or "DSP's"). The price on which the download is based must reflect current market rate compensation to the record label, thus promotional track downloads of a free single do not count towards certification.

On-demand streams from DSP's that are reported to the record labels, whether paid by the consumer by subscription or are free to the consumer through ad-supported services will be accepted for certification.

All certifications are based on permanent downloads and on-demand streams distributed within the United States.

Multiple versions of digital tracks can be combined for the purposes of certification under the following guidelines:
tracks defined as 'radio mix' or 'album version'
edited and explicit versions
remixes, provided they are not more than 90 seconds longer than the original version

'Live' recordings of a digital track may not be combined with other versions for the purpose of certification but may be certified separately.

Only official label/company videos count towards certification, User Generated Videos do not.

Certification count begins at the track's release date.

Certification Audit Requirements:

1. CD or digital copy of each track, especially if multiple versions are being combined for certification purposes. Each track's ISRC code should be included as well.

2. Label copy for all tracks.

3. Track release date.

4. Internal sales summary report segregated by DSP, reflecting only domestic commercial permanent downloads and on-demand streams. All foreign distributions and on-demand streams should be excluded or segregated from the sales summary report. Additionally, tracks sold that are included in a permanent digital full album sale do not count towards digital single sales.

5. In certain instances, we may request additional documentation including detailed sales reports and royalty statements rendered by the DSP's.
