#13 - no quarter is absolutely amazing.

#10-#13 - very good comments guys. There's definitely something to be said for albums that are heavy. I was also very surprised at how good the songs were. In fact, I could swear these songs were from the good old days. Now that you said many of them were demos from the 70s, it makes sense.

Here's a great photo of Geddy and Alex standing with two Mounties at last year's Juno Awards show.

Snowdog, wow - I could not agree more with everything you just said. Your...

"(..) when it comes to both VH and Rush it seems like a there's a large chunk of fans both old and new that has blinders on about that. The only value they see is in how heavy it is. (...) It's almost like single-issue voters in politics, the sole determinant of whether it's good or bad is if it's heavy enough."

...is particularly well put.

BTW, one of my top 5 Zeppelin songs - if not #1 - is No Quarter.

I agree with a lot of what you said and even though I really love the album I tried to make some of your points over at the VH forum. To me VH has always been just as much about silliness and fun and lightheartedness as hard rock. DLR era VH especially would just not be the same without things like Could This Be Magic? and Secrets and so on that pure hard rock bands would not do. There is a bit of that on the new album like Tattoo and Stay Frosty or Alex's funny but totally pointless (in a good way!) count-in on As Is but for some reason when it comes to both VH and Rush it seems like a there's a large chunk of fans both old and new that has blinders on about that. The only value they see is in how heavy it is.

I think it's just part of everything becoming more and more extreme these days and anything that's not is apparently boring to people. From seeing comments on youtube for both the new VH album and for BU2B and Caravan the overwhelming thing people who like the songs focus on is how cool they are simply because they're so heavy. It's almost like single-issue voters in politics, the sole determinant of whether it's good or bad is if it's heavy enough. I hear this all the time with Led Zeppelin and other bands, too. To me Led Zeppelin is just as much about Going to California and That's the Way for example as it is Black Dog but many fans think of any song that not heavy-riff oriented as a waste of time.

"In fact, for VH it's almost TOO heavy."

Snowdog, you have nailed my problem with the album.

Now that I've heard the whole album I enjoy Tattoo MORE because it showcases a different side of the band.

Like Rush, on most of VH's albums you get to see their versatility (I'd argue that VH's "experimental" songs rank among their best) - and I'm disappointed that's less in evidence on ADKOT. I don't feel like I get the full Van Halen experience.

While I don't think any song is filler (a BIG positive about the album), you get to the point where you go from very heavy song to very heavy song. Unlike other VH albums, there's little tension and release. I think of Fair Warning and how Unchained flows into Push Comes to Shove. Very different but IMHO equally great songs that somehow all feel like the same band and belong on the same album.

Same with Women and Children First - Loss of Control flowing into the midtempo swagger of Take Your Whiskey Home into the pure acoustic Could These Be Magic.

Or 1984 with Hot for Teacher flowing into a "synth rocker" like I'll Wait.

With that, I'm also disappointed there aren't any instrumentals! I figured with three family members in the band we'd get a standalone showcase and they'd want to provide it.

The LOUD mix of the album intensifies the problem - I hate it when I have to turn DOWN a song I want to appreciate more, not to mention a song I already like.

I've only listened ADKOT all the way through once so my opinion could change over time.

Like Snowdog did, I suppose I should also say "enough about that." I know this is a RUSH forum here. But VH is my second favorite band - as mentioned qualities I love in Rush I also love in VH. And - especially during a lull in Rush news (laugh) - I always enjoy hearing about other bands people are into.

I love the new VH album and it's the first cd I've been excited to buy on release day (other than anything new by Rush) in ages. Even though just about exactly half the album is simply newly recorded versions of old 70s demos with new lyrics they sound amazing. Considering the condition Eddie has been in for the past dozen or more years it's a wonder he even alive. To hear him on the new songs and see him at the private shows they've played in the last couple weeks it's astounding how happy and healthy he looks and how well he's playing. And yeah, Tattoo (while also based on a a reinvented old demo called Down in Flames) was probably the safest and most generic choice as a single for the mainstream but the rest of the album is the heaviest they've ever done. In fact, for VH it's almost TOO heavy. It's going to be a major success though and it deserves to be.

Now, if Rush had simply used 35 year old demos for inspiration for the new album I'd be embarrassed but I love different bands for different reasons and VH is just about fun for me which this cd has oodles of. I spend a lot of time at the VHlinks forum and even the most bitter, jaded old fans who were convinced the band was dead are in shock over how much they like it. I don't think I've ever seen a new album by an old band released to almost universal praise by its hardcore fans. All the press reviews have been very positive as well.

Ok, enough about that. It's just making waiting for CA that much harder.

#8 - dude, I own over 7,000 records, not just Rush or VH. These are just some out of many. I like all those bands. DT is awesome, saw them last year. Same for Roger Waters. They're all very good artists.

If you're so tired, go get some sleep!

I'm so tired of Van Halen, I went to the reunion tour back in 07/08 and really enjoyed it. But now I barely listen to Van Halen or Aerosmith or most of those bands anymore. I've seen all of them, but they just annoy me now. So many bands have sold out by now. Do I sound crazy? I'd rather [assuming I'm not allowed to listen to Rush] pop in a Pink Floyd album or a Dream Theater album or something modern and entirely different. Anyway... win that Juno!!

Actually, Tattoo is probably the worst song on the album.
