New site feature, posting email addresses and the MalNar leak

Fri, Apr 13, 2007@10:13AM | comments removed/disabled

Since implementing the registration-based comment system (over 800 users now!), I've received a lot of requests to help facilitate communication between registered users. People have either had to use me as a go-between or publicly post their email address to the site in order to get in touch with people. None of these 2 situations are ideal. The problem came to a head with the MalNar leak post. After a while every other post was a request by someone for somebody to email them the song - and they'd post their email address. This is not good. Posting your email to a public site is like throwing a bloody piece of meat in shark-infested waters; the spammers come a-swarming. So I've implemented a Personal-Message-like (like on most messageboards) system for users to use to get in touch with eachother. It's not exactly like a PM though because with this system, if you choose to send a message to another user, that user will be able to see your email address; they will receive an email coming from you. Most PM systems on boards actually have an inbox set up for each user so the email need not be displayed. Something like that is beyond my capabilities at this time. This will work more like a personal contact form for each user. Next to your name in the comments on a post, a contact link will appear. This will take other users to a contact form where they can type in a subject/message and the form will send an email to the email address you registered with. Your email address will never be publicly displayed. But when the user receives the email, they will see it as coming from your email address. All this happens "behind the scenes"; the email is sent by the RUSHISABAND website on your behalf. Now since I figured that the vast majority of users would be cool with this, I set it up as an opt-out feature. Meaning that as of this moment everybody can be contacted this way. You can choose to opt-out though by just going to manage your account and checking the block messages box. As always, if you notice any bugs with anything - let me know.

Now on the subject of the MalNar leak, since I have this Personal Contact Form-thing in place now I politely ask that people refrain from posting any requests to the comments for someone to send them the song. Please keep all that type of discussion offline. I don't want it to look like myself or this site condones the illegal sharing of music between users. And I don't want to piss off Rush or their management. I've already been removing any direct links to download the file or file-sharing links to obtain the song. I will continue to do that too. I'm not threatening to ban anyone or anything - this is just a request.
