THREE instrumentals on Snakes and Arrows?
Posted at 12:05 PM | comments (76)

UPDATE - 3/12@5:48PM: I have it from a higher power that there are only 2 - as we all had originally been hearing. :(

Andrew of Toronto's Q107 Rock Report posted the following message this morning:

... I've taken down the original picture I had up here because it wasn't the actual cover. I had a chance to see it this weekend at the World Premier Listening Party for "Snakes and Arrows" - as soon as I get a copy of the cover I'll put it up.

In the meantime, I heard six tracks from the new album. The room was kind of noisy so I can't tell you too much, though I've been able to spend some time with new single "Far Cry", which has an excellent chorus, chords that remind me of classic 70's Rush, and a solid groove, with enough drums to keep me in air percussion heaven. My favourite line - "one day I feel like I'm ahead of the wheel, and the next it's rolling over me" - brilliant.

The other song that really stood out was "Malignant Narcissim", one of three instrumentals on the album and one that makes Alex's head spin just thinking about it. I believe this one ran for under 5 minutes, so it's not a "La Villa"-length epic, more line with a "YYZ" or "Where's My Thing?".

Tour dates are coming soon. In the meantime, the Mighty Q is spinning "Far Cry" and we'd love to know what you think of the tune. Here's a link to Rush.com where it's being streamed as we speak. Go there, take a listen, and then come back and give us your opinion.

*gasp* ... 3 instrumentals. I can't wait.

Three??? I don't think my heart can take anymore of this.
#4 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:14PM by Rushguy [contact]

3? holy crikeh! wonder if each one was designed for each of them to stand out? doubt it, but who knows. I kinda can't believe there are 3. that's so un-Rush-like. maybe this dj dude was just dizzy like i am from the awesomeness?
#5 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:18PM by Brian [contact]

"Dizzy from the Awesomeness" is an incredible song title, I think.

#6 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:20PM by cygnify [contact]

I have an independant source that had heard the album about 3 weeks ago (I posted that somewhere here.) This is somebody I am close friends with who works in the business (he has engineered and mixed some major albums.) He is good friends with one of his clients, who is someone that a member of Rush has publicly mentioned being friends with. Through some curcumstances he heard the album in the presense of a member of Rush and his friend. Anyway, he told me there are "multiple instrumentals" on the disc (I may have interpreted this as "2") He has also mentioned there are a bunch of guitar solos.

I think we can say with near certainty that there are "multiple" instrumentals on the disc (and very likely 3!)
#7 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:22PM by Dino64 [contact]

It sounds gigantic. New here, hello everbody! Rush is back, sounding better than ever and thank God for that
#8 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:23PM by AJ [contact]

This album is going to rock. I definitely want to get it on vinyl, have it be my first personal Rush vinyl. My mom ownes MP on vinyl. This will start my vinyl collection. Have to get a better stereo and record player. I am pumped! Now I really have to get some work done. See ya
#9 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:24PM by Rushguy [contact]

hhahaahah thanks brian! maybe in 2012 the boys will keep Dizzy from the Awesomeness in mind as the first single on the next new album?
#10 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:27PM by maritimer [contact]

Praise the lord!!! ooh yeah...always wanted Rush to do more instrumentals and FINALLY it's happening!! As a huge fan, i couldn't ask for more...Rock on!!!
#11 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:28PM by sensei [contact]

I bet there aren't three full instrumentals.
#12 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:28PM by Brian [contact]

I'm good with that! Does anyone else feel like their fav sports team just won the "big game". I'm just in disbelief over this. It has honestly energized me in the biggest way today.
B
#13 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:32PM by Rushguy [contact]

good way to put it, B. this is like my islanders not only making the playoffs but winning the cup. this is waaaayyyy special. this experience so far blows away every other first track I can remember and I have been waiting for each release since grace (just turned 14 when it came out)
#14 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:32PM by Fred [contact]

Dear God,

Please send the production crew of Rush including Rush themselves some milk and cookies and pinch me so I can wake up from this fastasy...

AMENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#15 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:37PM by Brian [contact]

Ahhh, the Islanders. I'm an Avalanche fan myself. But you guys just got my fav player not on my own team, treat Ryan Smyth well. What a guy.
B
PS...Rush
I had to throw it in there somewhere.

#16 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:39PM by D- [contact]

3??? Hmm, I wonder if they went with the concept of 3 instrumentals as one for each style. 1 for Ged, 1 for Neil and 1 for Big Al!!!

Fred, I'll buy the milk and cookies!

50 more days my friends and I dont think that I can take it anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I just wet myself............I needed a great album after the let down that was VT!!!!!
#18 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:40PM by Rushguy [contact]

HA! just used a line from the song in everyday conversation! a server here at work has a fan that is going bad and making a racket. everyone gathered round to, i dont know, watch it make noise? and I said 'you can almost see the circuits blowing' and walked away. no one knows what i was talking about but me. and now you.
#19 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:42PM by Rushguy [contact]

Thanks B. Crap play by Simon almost taking that pathetic ranger's head off the other day. i hate that dirty/criminal stuff and was way disapointed an islander did that. he could have killed that dude.

uh-oh, end of post, no Rush reference either!
Oh there it is. rush.
#20 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:43PM by Broonskey [contact]

AJ: I echo the vinyl sentiment, I have several used copies of Rush albums on vinyl and they sound great.

If you want to know more about stereo's, especially vintage stereo's that have that warm, natural vinyl-like vintage sound even when playing all sorts of media formats (like cd's) check out this site:

link

Very friendly and knowledgeable people there that helped me pick out components for the best stereo I've ever owned by far and for much less (I'm talking under $300 for a old Pioneer receiver that cost over $300 when it came out--that's over $1000 in today's money, pure quality--AND a new Yamaha cd/dvd player) than I would have spent on the new and lesser quality components put out today (plastic crap made in china as cheaply as possible and sold for lots of $$$ to gullible and naive consumers).

Oh, and there are some big Rush fans on there as well!
#21 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:43PM by Lamb Saag [contact]

Whuh? THREE instrumentals?

And what if:

- a hidden bonus fourteenth track?
- a 3D holographic cd cover?
- a QuickTime movie of in-studio jamming?
- a guitar pick in the jewel case?
- a gatefold sleeve for the LP?
- a Wonka golden ticket in every 100,000th disc?
- Ed's name in the album credits?

...But, three instrumentals would be cool...
#22 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:45PM by John [contact]

WOW a new RUSH Album and the Stanley Cup all in the same year!

John in Nashvegas....GO PREDATORS!!!
#23 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:48PM by Chris [contact]

I'm guessing the three instrumentals have something to do with the left, center and right concept alluded to on another message board. Also, has anyone entertained the thought that we might be looking at a 2-disc collection of songs?
#24 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:48PM by JB [contact]

Not to change this great subject (Far Cry ROCKS!!).....

Does anyone know if RUSH is still planning on Remastering Vapor Trails? I know it was talked about, and a release date was even posted, then it was taken off the release dates.
#25 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:49PM by Rushguy [contact]

hhahahaha john. booooo preds though! One thing is for sure, some Rush fans fav hockey team will win the cup this year and thats good enough for me. LETS GO ISLANDERS (come, on, its been 10 years of nonsense with this mickey mouse organization. get behind me and root for these guys!)
#26 - Posted 3/12/07 @12:49PM by Dino64 [contact]

Do you think it makes sense that 'Good News First' would be the third instrumental, seeing that 'Malignant Narcissism' makes "Alex's head spin?"

Also I can't think of one lyrical idea for that title (not that someone died and made me Neil Peart!)

Sounds like their sense of humour...just a thought.
#27 - Posted 3/12/07 @1:00PM by John [contact]

Help me out RUSHGUY - are the NY islasters still in the league? I thought they moved to Staten ISLAND - ECHL.

Sorry - Had to do it. Your NASHVILLE PREDATORS ARE ON THE POWER PLAY!!!

#28 - Posted 3/12/07 @1:07PM by Rushguy [contact]

ouch. why do we hurt the ones we love so much, John. They are a real team, it's true! and they look good enough to annoy the hell out of a few teams in the playoffs.

oh yeah
rush!

Re: an earlier post (somewhere) about Neil's myspace being unchanged for the last couple of weeks

At least there's a chance that if nick r. was who he claimed to be, Neil not surprisingly understands/gets our skepticism (yes, I had some, too) and could explain the nature of it to Nick:

#31 - Posted 3/12/07 @1:16PM by Rushguy [contact]

hahahah - its cool John, i can take it. its all in good fun. preds were suppossed to be good though. isles are a bit of a surprise, then we got ryan smyth which is a huge steal - like jeter going to the expos or something. if there were expos, that is. hope we do well enough that he will sign with us after this season ends.
#32 - Posted 3/12/07 @1:19PM by Greg [contact]

Socializing one-on-one about hockey is bad form, gentlemen -- bad netiquette. You won't catch me talking about the Indians or Cavs here. Please exercise the same consideration, rather than filling up Ed's server and our eyes with content of little or no interest to the rest of us.

Most of us come here for an interest we *all* have in common: Rush. Anything not pertinent to Rush which takes on the flavor of one-on-one banter or trash-talking should be done using you own email accounts.

Ed, could you chime in on this, since it's your site.

Thanks to all concerned/addressed.
#33 - Posted 3/12/07 @1:21PM by John E [contact]

So what cover did Q107 have up originally ?
#34 - Posted 3/12/07 @1:24PM by jediyyz [contact]

Good things come in 3's...look what one song has done!!
#35 - Posted 3/12/07 @1:24PM by Rushguy [contact]

Sorry Greg. Is this post ok?

wow
#38 - Posted 3/12/07 @1:42PM by Roderick [contact]

Was Peart too lazy to write lyrics? :D
#39 - Posted 3/12/07 @1:52PM by Greg [contact]

Let's see ... 10 songs with lyrics, 3 without ... yep, he's lazy.

; )
#40 - Posted 3/12/07 @2:01PM by Rushguy [contact]

yeah - you can hear how lazy he is on Far Cry. brilliant lyrics+out-of-his-mind-drumming=lazy.

uggh.
#41 - Posted 3/12/07 @2:02PM by Geddy's Shadow [contact]

Why don't you comment on the other 6 songs you heard? Is the instrumental the ONLY song that stood out for you?
#42 - Posted 3/12/07 @2:04PM by Roderick [contact]

Hey guys, I was just kidding.
Didn't you see the ":D" emoticon at the end?
#43 - Posted 3/12/07 @2:05PM by Greg [contact]

And I was kidding right back -- hence my "; )"

I think we connected fine.
#44 - Posted 3/12/07 @2:05PM by cygnify [contact]

my money would be on The Main Monkey Bus, Good News First, then Malignant Narciss for the three instrumentals.

The Power of 3
#46 - Posted 3/12/07 @2:11PM by Rushguy [contact]

sorry Roderick. I thought that was a goalie in front of a net
#47 - Posted 3/12/07 @2:21PM by Brian [contact]

HEY GREG...
Way to ruin a perfectly good vibe in here. You may be someone else's boss, but in here, you're just another guy. I started the "sports-talk", and it had everything to do with Rush. What you said was flat-out uncalled for. There is always some ribbing going on in here, but it is good-natured. You, on the other hand, sounded like my father. Please, for the love of God(or whoever), try to act a little less professional. Apart form the music, it's all fun and games here.
B
#48 - Posted 3/12/07 @2:23PM by John [contact]

Be careful RUSHGUY that was a non-RUSH comment about Hockey. The Preists may have noticed...Bury your stick away from the TEMPLE.
#49 - Posted 3/12/07 @2:24PM by Mark Wallace [contact]

Lazy?

Sounds like a couple of totally awesome unplanned jam sessions that became songs! I think that has happened before, hasn't it?
#50 - Posted 3/12/07 @2:32PM by BOB [contact]

Do you think all the songs connect without pauses in between, like dark side of the moon. Far cry fades out, it doesnt exactly end cold.
#51 - Posted 3/12/07 @2:34PM by Scott_In_Tampa [contact]

I protest. Three more songs without The Professor's brilliant lyrics.
#52 - Posted 3/12/07 @2:38PM by Greg [contact]

I'm not so interested in sounding professional as I am in being civil. And considerate. If that wasn't obvious and ruined your vibe, that was never my intent.

I love Rush. Hockey not so much. Least of all, the kind of stuff that goes on at the a.m.r newsgroup-- this has been such a breath of fresh air -- I was just trying to respectfully request that we keep this forum at the high standard that I've been seeing for the past month or so.

If you can't understand where I'm coming from, I hope others do.

If nobody does, then I'd have to say I feel more like the Starman than a Temple Priest.
#53 - Posted 3/12/07 @2:51PM by Brian [contact]

I almost vomited after that last line, try being a little less self-important. You weren't doing anyone else a favor, the hockey-talk would have tapered off no matter what. Don't break your leg stepping off of your soapbox.
B
#54 - Posted 3/12/07 @2:52PM by Brian [contact]

BTW, no one was trying to oppress you "starman".

The photo is from Feedback, the graphics are probably amatuer.

No, Justin. That's from Feedback.
#58 - Posted 3/12/07 @3:00PM by Greg [contact]

I don't know how to respond to those last two posts, Brian, without taking the whole discourse down a level and completely off of Rush. I'll admit, it is tempting to flame you, but I'm not taking the bait.
#59 - Posted 3/12/07 @3:07PM by Rushguy [contact]

youch! lets not bicker! i go to lunch and all hades breaks out! Greg, I seriously don't think we did any harm with a few hockey related posts. It started out Rush related and then evolved into a few fun posts, nothing more. If Ed objects, certainly we all can refrain but it isnt the first time something off-topic was discussed. off-topics are likely to happen when so many peeps are gather round the watercooler, as it were. as for ruining my vibe, aint nothing gonna harsh my mellow today :)
#60 - Posted 3/12/07 @3:13PM by Greg [contact]

As far as I'm concerned it is, and has always been, Ed's call.

I can easily return to being merely a consumer of the most up-to-date and reliable source of Rush info and rumors. It won't break my spirit -- I'm not as touchy as some people seem to be hoping I am.

Just because Rush is the bomb, does mean we all have to explode.

; )
#61 - Posted 3/12/07 @3:14PM by Greg [contact]

doesn't (not does -- oops)
#62 - Posted 3/12/07 @3:14PM by jediyyz [contact]

I like your style Rushguy!!...it's a Far Cry from some of the rest...Rush on everyone!
#63 - Posted 3/12/07 @3:16PM by Brian [contact]

By all means Greg, flame me. As the posts show, YOU are the only one who cared. If you don't wanna read it...don't read it. As for the rest of us, we've all had plenty to say on topic, and if I'm not mistaken, we have enjoyed each other's cyber-company. So clean the sand out of your vag and get on with the Rush-love!

From the list of unconfirmed places, I am going to Pray that they do the Red Rocks Ampitheater. I live in Minnesota, but going to see them in the mountains would be as sweet as it can get. Anyone here see them in the Red Rocks the last time?

Kenny
#68 - Posted 3/12/07 @4:46PM by jediyyz [contact]

Hi, Kenny, yes I saw them in Red Rocks for R30...5th row, Alex's side...awesome venue, great crowd, close enough for eye contact from all 3...fun parking lot scene...if they go back, I won't miss it!!

I always preferred the lyric "There is incest in the forest" It's a cry for help!

Does anyone have a confirmation on whether there are two or three instrumentals? Who is the "higher power" who said two? How reliable?
#75 - Posted 3/13/07 @1:12PM by Bob [contact]

well i guess the higher power is this guy claiming to be Nick, i trust somone who puts it up on an official radio website than some guy claiming to be Nick on here!

John - Loved your post!

#74 - Posted by will on 03/12/2007 10:49 PM

Will - Nick R (producer) was on one of the threads and said only two, and even named them as "The Main Monkey Business" and "Malignant Narcissism". Ed has confirmed Nick was here.
