New Rush in-studio pics
Posted at 12:32 AM | comments (23)

Tuesday I posted an excerpt from a recent interview with Geddy Lee that appears in the current issue of Revolver magazine. iluvgeddy05 over at The Rush Forum has provided a couple scans of pics from the article. Both pics are of Rush in the studio at Allaire Studios in New York. Thanks to MitA for alerting me to these via the Counterparts board.

Are we allowed to make funny comments for the one of Geddy?

"Ah turn it off turn it off!! I get the picture!!! Vapor Trails was too loud!!!!"

By the way VT is my favorite Rush album. I'm just joking around.

Sometimes the music sounds better when it does not have to be so complicated. Rush looks like their having fun again by just jamming together and making great music. I guess the "Feedback" album taught them to relax, enjoy each others company and be less technical.
#7 - Posted 3/1/07 @9:12AM by Justin [contact]

I wouldn't say that Feedback taught them to be less technical. I would instead say that it showed them that they could accomplish their goals in the studio without it being so structured. If you ask me, SnA is going to be very technical in terms of their playing.

My palpitations are starting to have palpitations.

Remember, amazing tracks like "La Villa Strangiato" were recording live in the studio. It's a good thing, folks.

All 3 guys have said that the new album is going to be more Technical playing wise and less technical as far as how they are going to record al whole album............
#11 - Posted 3/1/07 @12:17PM by Redlinedrummer [contact]

"It's hard to describe," said Lee. "It's big, it's bold, and I think it's some of the best work we've done in years. I'm really pleased with the quality of the songs, and there's lots of playing on it." Lots of playing on it WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO hell yes!!!!!!!!!!!
Vapor trails was not a techincal album as far as the playing on it...............S&A will be!
#12 - Posted 3/1/07 @12:22PM by Redlinedrummer [contact]

And the title on the 2 pic probably reads "Rush kicks out the jams and the Metronome.........
#13 - Posted 3/1/07 @12:51PM by Steve [contact]

Redline, what's your criteria for technical playing? What do you base it on? Try playing some of the guitar stuff on Vapor Trails...you'll find out if it's technical or not.

Remember every year of getting together with the family for Thanksgiving? And all that you thought about was just getting through the month and into Christmas? Sometimes, it slowly paced through or it went by fast.

Welp, are the 2 months up yet???

It's kewl seeing the band again. I cant remember the last time we got to see pixs of em in the studio. Is it me, or does it look like Neils snare is a little higher than normal? Looks like its sitting on his lap now!

Have a good one guys!

You are right about Alexs playing on VT.........I'm talking as a whole..........
#16 - Posted 3/1/07 @1:25PM by AJ [contact]

D, Neil's snare has been higher since he started studying with Freddy Gruber ("A Work in Progress" explains that a bit, I believe). Or at least raising as he has been taking lessons.. if you watch some of his solos (Der Trommler, O Baterista--he does a snare part in which the camera gets in closer). All I can say is "different strokes for different folks!"

Technicality is great, but it has to be in a musical context (Rush has always done that, I feel). Musically and technically VT is great--the mix not so much (really hot mix). As I listened to it over the years, I was able to pull other elements out (more complex layers of vocals, guitars and bass). I still do! Ghost Rider is an example of that. The end of the song is haunting and enchanting. They did some really new stuff on that album, and it seems as though they are following suit with regard to recording. That alone can change the dynamic of a band--more excitement=more involved in the production of the tunes. Overall, I think judging by the little snippit we have heard, this new album will have the power of VT (both technically, musically, and lyrically), only mixed better.

Aj, I know that he's been taking re-freshening steps with Mr. Gruber since back to T4E. I'd like track the guy down and take a few myself. But, it just looks like the snare is up higher than it was for VT's and R30.

I've raised my snare up and found that I was beating the crud outta my sticks. Some comfort is hard as hell to change after playing for 25 years and it doesnt come over night.

If you listen to the layers of how the guys do things. They have it down to an art. With the exception of the sound for VT. Ghost Rider is such an awesome song, my fav on VT with One Little Victory. Would love to get my hands on the remaster sometime in this lifetime.

Am not steering the thread off course. But, I remember that there was mention of doing the remaster for VT then it was shelved. Anyone know why?

"Overall, I think judging by the little snippit we have heard, this new album will have the power of VT (both technically, musically, and lyrically), only mixed better."

That is exactly what I'm hoping. VT is so good musically that it makes me cry when I try to listen to it and find I can barely tolerate the crackles, snaps, and pops in the mix. It's gotten even more prominent as I've upgraded my stereo.

They had VT remastered for pre-sale on Amazon for a few months and then it was pulled. I don't know what that was all about, and I thought the only way to improve VT's sound was to re-record much of it which will never happen. :(

D,
I've actually raised my snare for a bar gig I'm playing (only due to a very VERY small stage). I find it easier in some respects for dynamic changes, and traditional grip (though I don't use that much unless I'm doing swing tunes or shuffley kind of stuff). It's cool that you experiment with snare height and things. It is easy to find one comfortable way and stick with it, but I like to adjust my kit often as well (as preparation for any kit I come across if I sit in with a band, or something to that effect). He gives a lot of the cool Gruber tips in A Work in Progress. You can also find some instructional Gruber videos (drummerworld.com is a great resource to me, you should check it out if you haven't already).

Sorry to kind of throw off the thread!

In further news on a DVD making of...that was a hot rumor when all this hit, even Alex mentioning it in a Radio interview.

Based upon an impending new release I have been listening to stuff I haven't in awhile, and I forgot how much I like the musicality on both Presto and RTB's. I don't love every song, but I forgot how much I liked it. Its neat to hear the progression of HYF to Presto to RTB's to CP to VT and even to FB. Totally different sound than say a Hemisphere's or even MP. I wonder if the progression to SA will bring them full circle back to a harder rock Hemispheres and MP vibe.

I do laugh though at how much the internet has changed the ball game...I can't believe I am even on a blog about Rush.

I love VT...and hope that SA maintains that hard rock feel, again the progresion.

Neil raised his snare when he studied with Freddie Grueber. He actually talks about it in his Work in progress video released in 97
