Alex Lifeson confirms tour and possible in-studio DVD!
Posted at 09:44 AM | comments (39)

UPDATE - 1/19@2:31PM: The entire interview is now up online on the stations's website. Just go to the site here and click on the Rock Interviews banner on the right of the page.

UPDATE - 1/15@10:00AM: I've also just heard a couple rumors that Lerxst mentioned that the working title for the album is Snakes and Arrows or possibly Snakes and Ladders? No idea if this is for real or not. I don't place much stock in working titles, since they usually don't end up being what is used. Either way, that's what I heard. :)

Alex Lifeson recently called in to Jeff Burrows' (The Tea Party) radio show on Canadian radio station 95.1 The Rock and had some very cool news regarding the new album and the tour. I didn't hear the interview but saw the highlights posted on the various messageboards. From what I read, Alex mentioned that the new album is set for a late April or early May release - but we already knew that. And ... he said that a lot of the studio work was video taped for a dvd! As far as the tour goes, it's currently scheduled to start in June and will include North America and Europe with a break for Christmas then onto South America. So this would seem to be the first official confirmation from a band member that they will tour and, as reported earlier, they will hit South America again. What I'm particularly excited about is the possibility of a documentary-style in-studio DVD! The station is supposed to be posting the interview at some point. If/when they do I'll link to it.

Snakes on a Album? Get these Mother#%@#$@# Snakes off my album!

A "making of" would be great, they are a musician's band and I know that a great number would love to see how an album is made. Remember though Alex is the one who wants to document everything.
#2 - Posted 01/15/2007 10:37 AM by Kevsource [contact]

An in-studio "making of" would be sweet.

Maybe these guys actually DO see what's happening outside their little bubble from time to time, as many proggy bands have "making of" footage either bundled with their CD's, or sold separately.

The in-studio footage would be great to see!! This is exciting news.

Maybe the in-studio DVD was inspired by Neil's "making of" videos. I would love it if they produced something like that. It would be incredible to see.

Maybe the DVD will be a bonus disc with the new album. That seems to be the trent these days...

This is interesting:

"Chutes and Ladders, the popular children's game, is derived from the ancient Hindu game Leela, or Snakes and Arrows, which charts the ups and downs of the soul's path toward reunion with the Infinite. Snakes and Arrows was designed by the seers and saints of India as a tool for understanding the relationship of the individual self to the Absolute Self. For thousands of years the 72 spaces on this game board have enabled players to chart the paths that represent the course of their lives. Each space represents a virtue or a vice, an aspect of consciousness, or a plane of reality and is accompanied by a commentary explaining its meaning. The player's progress on the board is dictated by the fall of a die corresponding to the forces of karma. Repeated encounters with the snakes and arrows on the board reveal the full meaning of the commentaries and can give shape to habitual patterns of the player, resulting in greater self-understanding and even a gradual detachment from the ego's delusions. "

Thanks Ed. For some reason when I saw Snakes and Arrows my mind read Chutes and Ladders...weird, as I did not know the two were related.

I'm hoping the DVD will be a performance DVD, ala Metallica's St. Anger where they play every song on the album (but better ;-) )
#9 - Posted 01/15/2007 1:20 PM by Reed Lover [contact]

So the anticipation intensifies.

Wonderful news about the tour!

"Snakes and Ladders" has often been used as a metaphor for life's "ups and downs" and even in the Christian sense of the journey to Heaven or the fall from grace leading to Hell.
A nice catch-all title that even links into Neil's previous musings on Roll The Bones; the game uses a dice and the chances of winning depend more on the roll of the dice rather than skill.

Regarding the DVD, does this mean that there might be two versions of the album, a normal release and a deluxe release complete with bonus DVD? One would hope that the two releases would be concurrent, though the R30 release suggests they will be.

....hope it isnt going to be a May release.

Wow. This is awesome! Can't wait for more!!!!!!!
And nice, Kurt... Enough is enough. I've had it with these goddamn snakes... Actually I haven't, and if they're on their album, then I'll just have to deal! Hahaha...
#11 - Posted 01/15/2007 2:52 PM by Kurt [contact]

Thanks Ed...learn something new everyday...Snakes and Arrows makes sense considering the talked about overall theme. Plus it just screams for a Samuel L. Jackson sighting on a concert reel!! 21 mother#@%^ 12!

Sounds like Neil has been on a spiritual journey. This is so cool to get excited about.

Kickass news about a tour and the album release! (I mean, the April release date could have been way off and it could have been put back until the summer or something, and there could of been no tour.)

As for this rumored title(s), I hope it isn't correct. It's not that bad, but it sounds more like an cheesy 80's hairband (who are trying to sound badass) rock album title. I remember Vapor Trails was rumored to be called "Humans" and I was like, oh no, that's sooo corny...I doubt this will be the album title, but we'll see.

A "making of" DVD will be cool to see, especially if the songs are so good that you will want to see the recording of them. (I wouldn't be too interested in seeing the behind the scenes making of CP or T4E, for instance. I'd watch it once, but I wouldn't buy it.) Now if they only had some footage of their earlier making of albums...like MP; I love how in the Tom Sawyer and Limelight vids Ged is like in sweats and it's all laid back and not staged. It's authentic and funny!

Winter is my favorite season, but I'm looking forward to the Spring now!

Someone at Anthem realizes to keep Rush fans happy all these years, give them more than they expect! I hope whoever is behind this gets a big bonus(great marketing)
#17 - Posted 01/15/2007 9:33 PM by Jaybird [contact]

The tour looks like it could have 70 or more dates. R30 was 58 dates from May 26 - Oct 1. So if this tour does start in June and goes to Christmas, one could draw the conclusion that it will be more than R30's 58 dates.
#18 - Posted 01/15/2007 9:45 PM by Broonskey [contact]

Or they could just have a more laid back schedule. They're dinosaurs now, lol. :P

But more dates would be nice, that means more places and the chance I could travel to a few cities around me (Kansas City, Des Moines, and Chicago) to see them multiple times for once!
#19 - Posted 01/15/2007 11:26 PM by Broonskey [contact]

Either way, I can't wait! I'll be the guy in the track pants sporting a rather anxious erection. I hope it's as good as the last tour! Rush on ;P !!
#20 - Posted 01/15/2007 11:28 PM by Samuel Scott [contact]

In my experience, early rumored names of an upcoming Rush album/CD have been very similar, if not identical, to the official name of the release. I had an Anthem contact way back then and in my limited experience in that capacity, the album titles of Presto, Roll The Bones, Counterparts, and Test For Echo were very similar if not identical to unsubstantiated rumors. Don't be surprised if the title winds up being Snakes and Arrows (more likely, because it aligns exactly with the aforementioned board game), or Snakes and Ladders (bridge involving the game Chutes and Ladders).

Sounds like they really did video the making of the new CD. Just one more sign of Neil Peart's seemingly complete recovery from his understandable hyper-reclusiveness following TFE. I seem to recall a recent audio interview with a magazine during which he could not be silenced, so to speak. He appears to have moved to new levels of acceptance in terms of what normally accompanies legendary rock star status. The fact that he wrote several pages on the latest Rush recording on his own web site, providing the ONLY truly in-depth accout of their latest recording process, is testimony to that fact.

Don't be surprised if the new titles includes the words "Snakes" and/or "Ladders".
#21 - Posted 01/16/2007 12:02 AM by Mark Wallace [contact]

Broonskey, I think you are right. I don't see the boys playing 70+ dates. I think they will take a bit longer between shows and/or do a run of 10 or 15 then take a week or so off and then resume maintaining a similar pattern throughout. As you say - "they are dinosaurs" (almost) and will probably take a slower pace overall to maintain the "high energy" concerts we all love.

Cant wait for the tour. I hope the start in my area. I think Virginia Beach was like 3rd on the VT tour. They might not have hit their peak and be 110% in the groove yet, but they are VERY far from tired at that point.

By the way - Excellent reporting Ed!

Lmao, that made me laugh. Obviously not my post, just someone whose sad little nothing of a life makes them actually take the time to post something so immature and totally ridiculous as this.

Thanks anonymous troll, you only serve to make me feel better about myself, for if I was a idiot and therefore not close to the mark about whatever past things I may have said to offend you (I've said nothing offensive to anyone in this thread) then you wouldn't have bothered to post such a silly pathetic little attempt at an insult to "get back" at me weeks/months later in an totally unrelated thread. I find it very amusing that I upset you so much you felt the need to do this. Shouldn't you have better things to do and other problems in your life to worry about? Well, not when it's apparently so boring and empty I suppose, lol.

Btw, ed will just delete this post and the above post made under my name within hours, so what have you accomplished? (Besides the confidence boost you just gave me and me sitting here grinning smugly over this whole thing that is.)

Again, thanks! Nice to know I'm smart enough to offend some moron this much! :) (Though that's hardly an achievement.)

PS: If you wish, because you have nothing else to do, go ahead and email me all your inane and absurd insults your puny brain can come up with (I do hope you are about 14, if you are older you have the mind of a dim child and must still live at home and work a "special" job, lol): arete_1@sbcglobal.net. I won't see them though, I get 300 plus spam emails a week and never read it, just delete the whole spam box, but if it makes you feel better...go ahead!

PS you know most of you are just riding on my coattails anyway. When will you letches learn? Never I should suppose. If you offered even a modicum of intelligence, I would pause to give you the time of day. But alas, you fail in your attempts, and attack me instead! Ed, just delete these absurd defamations of my superiority.
#24 - Posted 01/16/2007 12:52 AM by Broonskey [contact]

Yea Mark, I think it's just going to be a less intense schedule.

I was joking when I referred to them as "dinosaurs" (I first heard that term in relation to them in some review of I think the R30 concert tour, the title was something like "Dinosaurs Can Rock!") but, like you said (and I have said) they aren't the typical older rock band: their music is mostly intense and fast and thus so are their shows. They are not like the more laid back, slower, and mellow older groups that still perform (Think Billy Joel whose touring in the Spring, or The Stones, Fleetwood Mac, CSN&Y, Jethro Tull...etc.). Those groups have to have it easier when they perform these days (and always did) and I'm amazed Rush is still so good, with all of their quick time changes (reaction time slows with age of course) fast pace, and energy their music demands.

They'll probably make it to St. Louis about mid-summer, which is unfortunate, for though it is GREAT I get to probably see them again, I HATE outside shows for intense bands like Rush (they're great for some of those bands I mentioned above who pair great with a more relaxed "outside" fair-like feel to their concerts, but not for bands who are supposed to be LOUD, intense, and energetic) especially at the Riverport/UMB/Verizon (whatever it's called now) Pavilion. The sun doesn't go down under mid-way through the show and thus you can't see the stage as well (close or not) and the lighting is less intense and you see freaking cars going by on the highway behind the stage through half of it, and it's humid and hot as hell (as it always is during our miserable Missouri summers, especially recently).

The best Rush concerts I have seen (I've seen 5) have all been indoors (with the exception of my first Rush concert on the CP tour when I was in the nosebleed section at the Arena) with the Ames, Iowa on the VT tour the best of all.

Inside venues were made for bands like Rush, outside venues are for old hippie bands, lol.

Lmao, and again, of course not my post. In fact, a very bad attempt at trying to copy my writing style. But that's the best your moron brain can do I guess.

Well, thanks again anonymous troll! You again amuse me and give all here further confirmation of your patheticness and my obvious deep hurt I caused you. You really do have nothing better to do huh?

Poor wittle baby. Go ahead and post again, you're only embarrassing yourself and proving me right by doing so you spamming troll. :)

This is great news! My wife and I are planning to travel to The Netherlands later in the year, so I'm itching to know if they'll play Rotterdam again some time this year so I can finally get to see them live...if I can match up the dates that is, and if they don't decide to tour Oz (highly unlikely, I know). I don't believe I have ever wished for anything more in my 47 years! :)

Waiting anxiously for the official tour dates...

Excellent point. But they had the slower pace for R30. It basically went - two weeks on, two weeks off, two weeks on, two weeks off, three weeks on, two weeks off, three weeks on, end.

Oh well, we wait for those official dates!

hmm, not really sure about 'snakes and ladders' - just reminds me of a naff board game i played when i was 5 tho' i did enjoy it at the time. really pleased to be hearing they might play UK as they played here the last album ok it was an EP - i understand they don't tour here only every few albums or so these days.

Lol, you morons need not worry; there is only one of me. And I trust you realise your fortitude that I spare you my knowledge. I perchance may be abrasive to the unseeming eye, but regardless, I am a necessity for all. If you do not appreciate what I have to say, do not read. My physician says I am Bi-polar, but I only half believe him.
But I digress, Broonskey is Genuine!
Rush on :P.

And it happens again, lol (look right above).

You know you idiot you aren't bothering me in the least (as I said, I find this all merely amusing and flattering) but you're upsetting the forum with your sad little personal vendetta.

Maybe this is ed? Why aren't these troll posts deleted? Mine will have a different ip address from the fake "me", I suggest you delete/ban the one...unless...?

Btw, no way I wrote that nonsense, I can actually spell "realize" and am not incoherent (what the hell does: "realise your fortitude that I spare you my knowledge." mean? take Comp. 1 before you type again.) lol.

I like the title Snakes and Arrows and can't wait for this to come out. I don't care how many dates they do as long as they come through KC Missouri. I plan to take a mini vacation and see several other shows.

The Bonus disc sounds like a very cool idea. If this is another Moving Pictures (Success Wise) folks other than us hardcore Rush Fans might enjoy it also.

"If this is another Moving Pictures (Success Wise) folks other than us hardcore Rush Fans might enjoy it also."

That brings up an interesting point of conversation. If the new album did have sales of 3 to 4 million, would the RIAA count the on-line download sales?
