Rush ICON compilation to be released next month
Posted at 7:47PM | comments (48)

In my most recent Friday updates post I'd mentioned that MusicTap.net had reported that Rush will be releasing yet another compilation package as part of the new ICON series. Thanks to Power Windows we now have several more details regarding the release. From the Power Windows website:

Universal has announced a new series of compilations called "ICONS", with the tag line "Great Artists, Great Songs, Great Value!". Each ICONS release will include "12 hits for only $7.99". Featured ICONS include artists ranging from KISS to Diana Ross, and of course, RUSH.

RUSH Icons will be released August 31st, and "featured songs include their debut album's 'Working Man,' 2112's 'The Twilight Zone' and classic rock radio staple 'Limelight.'"

The compilation is already available for pre-order at Amazon.com.

Hey, if it turns just one person into a new fan, great, right?

I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords

So the other night a comericial for an ARENA ROCK Cd was on.
Yes a cd for arena rock songs and "Closer to the heart" was on it >> Why..... Rush isn't arena rock at all
#5 - Posted 7/26/10 @8:08PM by kevin [contact]

Blah! Nothing to see hear! Please disperse!

LOL - PEZ Dispenser is about all that is left...
#6 - Posted 7/26/10 @8:09PM by kevin [contact]

hear = here Long day at the office George!
#7 - Posted 7/26/10 @8:20PM by ctbadger [contact]

"The Twilight Zone" is the selection from 2112? Really? I can count four songs on the album I would put ahead of it (and "Tears" isn't one of them). If your trying to get new fans...I'm just sayin'...
#8 - Posted 7/26/10 @9:11PM by mark one [contact]

WOW limelight again. ripoff!! please no more greatest hits or best of or whatever there calling it
#9 - Posted 7/26/10 @9:16PM by drmike [contact]

Might be a decent purchase for non-fans that find themselves interested in Rush following Beyond the Lighted Stage. Twilight Zone is definitely a strange selection...
#10 - Posted 7/26/10 @9:26PM by cpb [contact]

Now, now, everybody...as we were told in an earlier thread:

"Making as much money as you can......YES"

Glittering prizes and endless compromises are just part of the Business of Doing Business. And if you don't like it, you don't have to buy it! So Leave That Thing Alone!

(What? You say that you already bought EVERY ONE OF THEIR ALBUMS, and the beauty of Rush is that once you get sucked in, you feel COMPELLED to get their entire catalogue? Well...you just...just...DUMMYHEAD!)
#11 - Posted 7/26/10 @9:37PM by Mr. K

#5 - Throw in the plush beach towel along with the limited edition PEZ dispensers (for a limited time only, of course) and you can complete your Christmas shopping early for that special Rush fan in your life.

I wonder what Neil thinks about Christmas...
#12 - Posted 7/26/10 @9:37PM by Hardnecker [contact]

They have their retirement to think about. Wait until they offer all their catalogue in 5.1. Cha ching! I don't own ANY of their compilations nor will I. What for? I hope they get their shit together for the second half of this tour. Technical glitches and sloppy playing were more prevalent during the first half of this tour than at any time in the bands history. Doesn't mean I don't love 'em but I call a spade a spade. I hope the break does them some good.
#13 - Posted 7/26/10 @9:51PM by bakes7 [contact]

ANOTHER compilation, this is starting to "echo with the sounds of salesman".
#14 - Posted 7/26/10 @10:06PM by choose freewill [contact]

Sounds like the record company's doings more than the band's. Not that they'll be complaining about any additional royalties coming their way, of course(would you?). As cpb stated in #10 you don't have to buy it. No big deal.
#15 - Posted 7/26/10 @10:13PM by cpb [contact]

#14: It should be noted that I was being sarcastic. I actually agree more with #13 and, especially, #12.
#16 - Posted 7/26/10 @10:17PM by RushFanForever [contact]

I remember reading a MAD Magazine article awhile back which poked fun at things in the music business.

The article gave an example of Pat Benatar in which her old record company would keep putting out these 'greatest hits compilation albums'.

It is quite amusing.
#17 - Posted 7/26/10 @10:23PM by Archimer [contact]

Pah, Rush is something that you can't just pick and choose from. You've got to hear it all. ;) I have a very talented musician friend that I'm trying to introduce the wonders of Rush to, but I don't do it with compilation albums. I bought him 'Moving Pictures' first because he'd know a couple of tunes off of it, and on his next birthday, he got '2112.'

We're gonna do things RIGHT, yessah! That's how we do that, there.
#18 - Posted 7/26/10 @10:27PM by guitarmutt [contact]

Of course it's more the label's doing. They've all done this before. CD sales are diminishing over all, and I think all these comps, and if you look across the rock and r n b sections of your local record store (if you're lucky to still have one of course) you'll see the racks are littered with them as a last ditch effort to bring in some money. A lot of bands have left their labels and lost control over their opus.

Radiohead comes to mind. Almost immediately after they left Capitol, all their albums were released as special editions. Then they were re released as a limited edition boxed set all bundled together. Radiohead had no say or control over this apparently.

I think Robert Smith of The Cure is one of the few people from back then who actually owns his catalog of albums, and he had to make commercial/advert concessions for Polydor to acquiesce. Hopefully, Dirk, Lerxst and Pratt at least see some money from this ICONS release.
#19 - Posted 7/26/10 @10:43PM by choose freewill [contact]

#15-duly noted, and I am basically in agreement with the other sentiments as well. My point is simply that I doubt the band is to "blame" for this, and its nothing to get upset about.. I don't plan on buying it myself, that's for sure! Sorry if I took your words "out of context" as they say..
#20 - Posted 7/26/10 @10:52PM by cpb [contact]

You know, #14, you are right - as is #18. I apologize if I seemed snarky at you. It is a record company or "companies" thing, and the artists really don't have any say in this. The Radiohead example is perfect.

Many of us have knee-jerk reactions against these stupid "greatest hits" packages because a)we "celebrate their entire catalog"; b)we've seen it happen with other great bands where there become more Greatest Hits packages than actual albums (i.e. Jimi, YES); c)right now, during recessed times economically, a lot of us are smarting from the unusually high ticket prices this tour, not to mention the increased costs of EVERYTHING across the board, from the tour books to individual photographs.

It's not like the boys are saying, "I'll get my money out of you f***ers if it takes two more years" (an infamous quote from the late '70s by an NME writer about Rush). It just FEELS like it. So, right now, the introduction of some NEW bit of "money-for-old-rope" just feels sorta...lame.

Fair or not, it's how I feel...and I'm sure I'm not alone.
#21 - Posted 7/26/10 @11:00PM by choose freewill [contact]

no apology needed cpb.. it's all good. Hey look on the bright side, at least they're being referred to as "icons" right? (ok that's my lame attempt at sarcasm) Actually I think Corgan said it best in the doc, when referring to the great bands of all time.. "they're there"
RUSH ON!
#22 - Posted 7/26/10 @11:06PM by double-agent [contact]

I would be pissed if all these other so-called ICONS got their compilation CDs and Rush didn't get one. Hey at least they are being acknowledged as icons!! I'll buy it just because I love them so much! Bring it on!!
#23 - Posted 7/26/10 @11:51PM by Ricbass4003 [contact]

#11 - Glad to see you are into the plush beach towel as much as I am! I've contacted the backstage club about it a few times and they never commit. I'd buy like 4 of them.
#24 - Posted 7/27/10 @12:01AM by double-agent [contact]

Two words. Geddy pillowcases. Make it happen, backstage club! ☺♥
#25 - Posted 7/27/10 @1:18AM by random_sample [contact]

This is somewhat unrelated ,but I was curious about Rush's album sales for each individual album and found an article posted on here, showing sales of each album (since 1991) up until Feedback. Would anyone know what the sales figures for Snakes and arrows are, by any chance? Im curious to compare the sales of that album with past albums. Thanks ,if anyone has that info.
#26 - Posted 7/27/10 @9:28AM by Mr. K

#23 - I'd buy one for my girlfriend. She's not a fan, but it's the thought that counts, right?
#27 - Posted 7/27/10 @9:55AM by RemixVaporTrailsNOW [contact]

I actually make homemade comps for my converts.
#28 - Posted 7/27/10 @12:46PM by Ricbass4003 [contact]

Hmmm a Geddy pillow case sounds like a good idea. The bed sheets should come with three pillow cases. The bottom sheet can be a collage of all the album art. The top sheet can be the starman. The bedspread can be reversible and be duplicate of the bottom and top sheet but you can flip it to suit your mood. Then the beach towel has to be a tall towel and very plush. Available in different album covers. And Presto bunny slippers. new for the holiday season will be Rush Snuggies.
#29 - Posted 7/27/10 @12:59PM by random_sample [contact]

#28-
haha! thats hilarious! are you meeting with Ray Daniels to discuss these ideas?
#30 - Posted 7/27/10 @2:47PM by Lamb Saag [contact]

Did anybody else go to the Amazon.com link and notice the flash animation of the AT&T advertisement?

It was three spinning front-loaded washing machines! Coincidental, or ironic?

.
#31 - Posted 7/27/10 @4:32PM by cpb [contact]

Awesome, #28! Let's try some others:

* The "Power Windows Washer" - a garden hose attachment with the Rush logo somewhere on it.
* The "Caress Of Steel Belt Sander" - it was going to be on silver paper, but then someone changed it to a weird coppery tone at the last second.
* The "Bubba's Own Counterparts Oil & Vinegar Dressing" - all proceeds going to the International Foundation For Putting Things Together.
* The "Vapor Trails Toilet Paper" - OK, maybe not.

Happy Tuesday, everyone!
#32 - Posted 7/27/10 @5:18PM by snowdog20 [contact]

How about.....

The Grace Under Pressure washer

Hold Your Fire cigarette lighters

Permanent Waves hair salons (They blast Rush tunes while you get styled)

Digital Man alarm clock, Cinderella man ballet slippers, Tom Sawyer inflatable raft....

Sorry, I couldn't resist
#33 - Posted 7/27/10 @6:15PM by dssnhopper [contact]

I can't pretend another compilation CD is a long awaited desire. Meh, I get what I'm saying.
#34 - Posted 7/27/10 @6:38PM by guitarmutt [contact]

By-Tor and the Snow Dog Shoes.

The Earthshine Globe. It's also a lamp.
#35 - Posted 7/27/10 @7:36PM by katskahnne [contact]

#23/28 - Oh, what the heck? I need a new beach towel anyway...

Far as the other stuff, though, I'm holding out for a Where's My Thing? cel phone/glasses/remote/car keys locator. GPS for one's everyday necessities. Like "The Clapper", but for people who aren't lazy, just middle-aged and experiencing short-term memory issues...::coughcoughlikemecough::
#36 - Posted 7/27/10 @8:13PM by ctbadger [contact]

Can the "In The End" casket be far behind?
#37 - Posted 7/27/10 @9:38PM by KenNJ [contact]

i was thinking the "In the End Self Prostate Exam"
#38 - Posted 7/28/10 @6:13AM by kevin [contact]

Dont forget the Beneath, Between & Behind Sex Toy LOL
#39 - Posted 7/28/10 @1:43PM by Hill

33#

I don't have a problem with all these Rush compilations (actually I do). But I hate it when nothing is included past 1981. Its all '2112', 'Limelight', 'Tom Sawyer', 'Spirit of the Radio', 'Closer to the Heart'.

Geez, Rush is not a nostalgia band! They've recorded stuff since 1981!
#40 - Posted 7/28/10 @2:25PM by drmike [contact]

#39 I agree with you. We don't have a full track listing so maybe there will be more current material on the compilation. I guess this series is trying to appeal to casual Rush fans or even new Rush fans because most of us RIABers have every song they could possibly put on the compilation... (except maybe that song in Beyond the Lighted Stage that Rush was playing in the St Catherines high school with John Rutsey.)
#41 - Posted 7/28/10 @4:37PM by Hill

Yeah, there is something to be said about trying to appeal to the most casual of Rush fans.

I get the feeling sometimes Rush is thought of as a nostalgia act by to many people. You know, like "KC & Sunshine Band".
#42 - Posted 7/28/10 @4:53PM by M next 2 I next 2 K next 2 E [contact]

I love all of the Rush brand merchandise going on in this thread. You guys are crackin' me up!

In keeping with the bathroom theme....okay...in creating a bathroom theme; How about a "Farewell to Kings" toilet seats; "The Larger Bowl" toilets (obvious); "Vital Signs" thermometers; "Different Strings" tampons (sorry for that one but I couldn't resist); "Enemy Within" or "Between Sun and Moon" toilet paper, "The Pass" laxatives, and lastly, every song title on the first album could be used for condoms (I especially like "Finding My Way" and "Working Man" brands)....but a title/brand NOT on the first album, "Making Memories" condoms.

Can I get a rim shot here?
#43 - Posted 7/28/10 @5:07PM by drmike [contact]

#42 Too funny! Gotta get some of those The Pass laxatives!

#41 Many other acts seem to be devoted to playing 1970's stuff. I took my wife to see Elton John and Billy Joel and they didn't play a single song that was written after 1981. I know they both wrote lots of material after that. Do other older bands like The Who or Rolling Stones do this too? I can't imagine Rush playing nothing but Pre-Signals material.
#44 - Posted 7/28/10 @6:21PM by dssnhopper [contact]

#39: Agreed - to an extent. If I want a compilation CD, I'll burn one myself. I have all of the studio works, and a few of the compilations, so my line of thought is that I don't want another CD with songs I already have; some as much as three of . . . if not more. I believe I can make a better compilation disk, myself, since I know what songs I really want:

Beneath-Between-Behind
Nobody's Hero
All the instrumentals
By-Tor
All the epic long songs

you get my drift. Maybe I'm not a Rush purist, or elitist, but I don't think they or the record company are hurting for money. I'm not, either, but I don't feel a need to continue buying the same songs over-and-over-again. No darts, please . . . it's just my opinion . . . you know, they're like behinds; everyone has one, and they all stink.
#45 - Posted 7/28/10 @6:52PM by kevin [contact]

Interestingly enough Chronicles went double platinum, Archives went platinum and Spirit of the radio went gold. I bought all of those, but I'm with you #44 I don't want to buy the same thing over and over. I support the band but their o.k. at this point and their kids are o.k. and their kids kids are o.k. Plenty of cash to go around.

BTW Just Curious I wonder what Ray Daniels takes home?
#46 - Posted 7/28/10 @7:51PM by drmike [contact]

If I remember correctly, Archives wasn't a compilation but the first 3 albums bundled together. I'm not sure why I bought Chronicles but Spirit of Radio came with something extra (And my memory doesn't seem to be good enough to remember what it was--a DVD perhaps?).
#47 - Posted 7/28/10 @8:59PM by Hill

#44

No darts, good comment. When I was growing up in the 80s, I swear I was the only in town that really 'got' Power Windows and GUP. Everyone else hated the direction Rush was taking. So I love it today whenever Rush gets props for their post MP stuff.

When I hear Geddy and Alex get to a radio station, just to be asked questions about "Tom Sawyer" and "Spirit of Radio" from some uninformed DJ, it drives me nuts. That was 30 years ago!

Ok, sorry for my rant.
#48 - Posted 7/29/10 @6:25AM by dssnhopper [contact]

#47: Power Windows is my fav Rush album; so many great songs. Also, GUP is, to me, a very heavy and dark album. Many nights, I would sit in front of the stereo with the headphones on, listening to GUP.

Unfortunately, even with the diversity/progressiveness/uniqueness (call-it-what-you-like) of their music, they are associated with only a handful of songs; most of which are from MP. I love MP, but I get frustrated when people only associate Rush with Tom Sawyer or Limelight.

Again, I just don't want to purchase another CD of songs I already have. Remastered . . . maybe.
