Rush 2112/Moving Pictures Classic Albums preview

A couple of months ago we learned that the Rush 2112/Moving Pictures Classic Albums special would be released to DVD and Blu-ray on September 28th. The special had also been slated to run before the television premiere of the Rush documentary on VH1 Classic but was pulled at the last minute. It's still expected that it will air on VH1 and VH1 Classic sometime before the DVD release later this summer but there's no specific date yet. Amazon.com recently posted a short minute-and-a-half preview video up on their Rush page. The video shows Neil Peart, David Fricke, Alex Lifeson and Terry Brown talking about Limelight. I wasn't planning on buying the Classic Albums DVD, but after seeing that brief little clip...I have to rethink that non-purchase.

Holy Shit that clip made my hair stand up! I said it once and I will say it again, this to me is the most exciting thing coming out. Seeing how they made these records truly excites me.

NO!!!!!!!!!!! they did that teaser with Alex playing the solo then switching to ESL video then it STOPPED!!!!!!! i will pay someone $500,000 to finish that video and use footage from every DVD released and make it hellacool!!!! seriously....except for the half-mil part ;-)

i also want to know if Alex was fake-playing along with the isolated track????? i kinda doubt they could re-create that sound that precisely, even Alex and an engineer, because Alex has said that they did it outside to get natural reverb off the Quebec mountains. not to mention the amplifier combination back then is probably impossible to find, and i think it is one of the first solos he actually used a Fender to record. anyway, bla bla bla...

#12 Yes, it is his track and the original track, that's standard in these Classic Album pieces and appropriate IMO.

"Limelight" is not my favorite tune but the lead
is one of the most poetic guitar pieces in RR history. The song itself is probably one of their best constructed songs which is ironic because it was one of the first that followed the standard song formula.

Intro>Verse>Chorus>Verse>Chorus>Lead(bridge)>Chorus>Outro


I remember reading that Dave Murray of Iron Maiden always dug that lead and it gave him a different view of his solo construction.

Do we know yet if it is one special or two. I hope for two. How can they do justice to both of those incredible albums in a combined special? (unless it's twice as long)

I just had to pull out 'Exit....Stage Left' on dvd. Watched up to 'Xanadu' and paused. Heading to the pool, then later come back and finish that puppy. I think it's gonna be a Rush dvd/bluray marathon today. Cheers to the summer of Rush!!

#14 Its a hybrid of both Albums. Most of the records on this series are huge sellers like "Yellow Brick Road" and "Dark Side of the Moon". Combined I think MP and 2112 sold 7 or 8 million records which is in line with most of the records featured in this series.

What puzzles me is that David Fricke (Rolling Stone) is interviewed on every Classic Albums piece I seen? BTW I used to think he was one of the Rush haters? Could be wrong....

# 16 kevin - I believe David Fricke has been an advocate for the band.

Fricke interviewed Rush for the 1981 Rolling Stone feature 'Power From The People' that was posted on here that I found.

#15 - i started doing that last night actually, but i started with vaopr trails and went from there. I almost got to snakes and arrows. I started doing this because yesterday afternoon i was going through all my ticket stubs and counted the Rush ones. I just realized that the 1st toronto show this year was my 10th Rush show!

does anyone have any idea how i can make a compilation DVD? i would like to take my fav. tracks from all my Rush DVD's and make one AMAZING one (that fit's me obviously). I have been trying for a while and just can't seem to figure it out. any tips would be awesome!

That is incredibly disappointing to me. I have a bunch of these Classic Album dvds and they all have band members showing how they played the original parts in the studio and none of the ones I've seen have them just miming the part, they're all playing it for real. It's beyond clear that what you're seeing and what you're hearing in that clip with Alex is not the same. I'm really looking forward to this but that is a real letdown.

Well, he's obviously physically playing but the studio version is completely drowning out the sound of what he's actually playing so it's effectively faked. That's ridiculous. I've haven't seen any of the other Classic Albums done that way.

I always loved how Alex used a delay/hold at the end of his Limelight solo to keep the high note sustaining behind the arpeggiated chorus. That sort of attention to detail is one of the things that makes Alex my favourite player on the planet.

#25 It's funny but that is my all time favorite solo and for a similar reason...I love how he holds that note. It goes on forever. I pointed it out one day to some people at work and they were all fascinated.
