RUSH BELONGS INDOORS......

There I said it.....

Wanna make something of it?..... :-)

I know Rush said they would not change up the setlist but from the show the other night in Camden they almost looked bored playing the first set...I thought is dragged a bit myself...maybe after the two week break they'll inject some life into the first set. I still have hope they could swith out at least two songs...hey, it could happen, probably won't but they should.

#7 - i thought it was awesome to see them play outdoors in Sarnia. something about having the guys right in front of you in daylight is pretty intimate. what was also really cool, was how after the intermission you almost get a new show, in the sense that you then are wowed by the lights and such. something to look forward to after intermission.

It is nice to attend an outdoors show in the summer but I must admit it is more of a sure thing with an inside show. Plus some outdoor venues really suck like HERSHEY and don't deserve to have Rush even play in them. Out of all the concerts I've been to in my lifetime, Hershey takes the cake for the worst.

I guess I can understand the outdoor venues since the music biz changed and they are earning a living with the tours now, why not pack 'em in and you can do that in the large outdoor venues.

Getting geared up. If anything happens please let us know my group is coming from Kingston.
#15 - Posted 7/23/10 @3:51PM by geddylee74 [contact]

If I hear anything, I'll let you know for sure. I'm just killing some time at a brewpub in Troy, waiting to cruise up - hoping to get there around 5/5:30 when the lots open. Hopefully the rain stays light. You'd think they would have cancelled it by now, if there was any chance of that.

I can't wait!! I'm f$&@ing stoked. Drove to Albany from Syracuse this morning jamming to r30... So pumped!!

#19 - Posted 7/23/10 @5:51PM by kevin [contact]

Rush belongs indoors? What are they lap dogs?
The best Rush concert I have ever seen was outdoors with about a million stars out 70 degrees and a cool breeze. Nuff said, Rush belongs on a stage venue doesn't matter..
#20 - Posted 7/23/10 @6:13PM by random_sample [contact]

I feel bad for the people who have tickets to see Rush and the show ends up being cancelled because of weather. It's just been one show so far, that's been cancelled though right? (Chicago?)
Also the people who ordered the so-called "VIP" packages and are still waiting for the "package". I am skipping this tour and planning to go next year when they tour. Seen them 9 times so far, so I've enjoyed those shows. Only saw them one time outdoors (in Columbus, Ohio Polaris Amphetheatre) and the rest were indoor shows.
It's pouring rain here now and I am about 5 hours west of NY state , so hopefully the show tonight isn't rained out.
#21 - Posted 7/23/10 @6:16PM by cpb [contact]

I may be wrong, but to pick up something mentioned in the Camden thread - could it be the "boredom" has less to do with their setlist and MORE to do with the technical glitches. Perhaps it's an air of FRUSTRATION - rare for our boys! - that we're seeing in these first dozen shows.

Hopefully that'll change as the tour wears on. If that's the case, some of the best shows will be the Texas ones. Y'all come on down!

(yee-haw. THERE. I said it.)

If you haven't already there is an online Rush for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame petition with over close to 35000 signatures already. It's free and takes a few seconds to do and can easily be found with google search. Also lets friends know about petition!
#23 - Posted 7/23/10 @10:12PM by mcoulson [contact]

With all due respect, I think Rush is better off NOT being in the R&R Hall. They sure don't seem to mind, and it makes the Hall look like the a**es they really are. And it's not just Rush, but who is in, and who is not in. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a JOKE! A very big one, too!
#24 - Posted 7/24/10 @12:27AM by Kelly D [contact]

Holy crap. Third time at SPAC- second time with Petie- first time with mommy_of_zuzu

**ATTENTION ALL GEDDICORNS**
mommy_of_zuzu graciously allowed Petie and me to stand in the front row with her during the second haldf and this collection of hot Rush Rats on Ged's side paid off! We got LOTS of Ged attention- I have confirmation and proof that Ged poses for pictures. . . especially Petie's! Petie unfurled a sign that said "I CAN'T STOP THINKING GED!" during "Caravan" and Ged LOVED it! During Neil's solo he had a roadie hand the three of us, plus another girl next to us, T-shirts that said "Gershon's- Nobody Beats My Sausage!" on them. We about died. That, and after "YYZ" HE SMACKED HIS OWN ASS at the end of it. Good lord. . .

Great show. Crowd was amazing, no trainwrecks (I think), and I got some more lovin' from Big Al!

Completely wired. One of the best Rush shows- maybe THE best Rush show- I've ever been to. Lucky number seven!
#25 - Posted 7/24/10 @12:29AM by Kelly D [contact]

Apologies for misspelling "half" and lacking proper punctuation. Too happy/dehydrated to care! Much love to mrdriven and A-CELL-OF-AWARENESS and of course RUSHGIRL. . .
#26 - Posted 7/24/10 @12:31AM by Rush Dad 98-01 [contact]

Barely rained at all after 6pm at the show. My kids and I were inside but little before and a light drizzle during intermission.

The show was fantastic and it was my kids' first concert ever (both boys ages 12 & 9). They were in awe and they were so excited. Definitely made it the best RSUH show of all the 13 I've gone to.

Two observations:
1) For all the clamoring for years to have them play "the Camera Eye", there was VERY LITTLE "pop" when it started. It's a good song but to me it's underwhelming live.
2) BU2B and Caravan are f'ing amazing live!!!! Can't wait for the whole album next year.
#27 - Posted 7/24/10 @12:41AM by philradz [contact]

Just got back, here are my thoughts - with a few set list spoilers:

Alex was sweating so hard he might as well have been wearing a shirt with a thick dark gray stripe across it.

I can see Alex's bald spot from the balcony.

For the third show running, the sound is just awful in the balcony. It's loud to the point where you can't distinguish any guitar or lyrics over anything. I'm never sitting in the balcony again, hardly worth the convenience of sitting down and lower prices. My ears are still ringing hours later.

During The Camera Eye, the "Angular mass of New Yorkers" line got a nice cheer.

No fire for 2112 or Witch Hunt, but the octopus light rig was in heavy use all show and dropped down during La Villa Strangiato so I was happy.

Alex looked bored off his ass during Time Stand Still, pretty much goofing off during his keyboard parts.

BU2B was amazing, I didn't want it to end.

Overall, pretty damn awesome show.
#28 - Posted 7/24/10 @12:54AM by random_sample [contact]

#27-
Your "review" was kinda funny. Basically..."shitty,crappy sound, bald spot, shitty,shitty....pretty damn awesome show though".
haha. (just kidding with you)

#22/ #23

Sorry #22 (you mean well, Im sure) but I agree with #23. I seriously hope if Rush is ever offered a place in the RRHOF that they decline . That's DEEEE CLINE...with a capital D!! Not just because they have "snubbed" Rush or inducted artists/bands of way less importance, talent, etc. before Rush, but because the RRHOF is a big JOKE ,with a capital ...uh, you get the point.

#30 - Posted 7/24/10 @1:45AM by mygcsis3 [contact]

Show number 5 for me. Alex's side, about 10 rows back. What struck me as different/better about this from the past few years is the level of interaction between them tonight. Jeez... I actually saw Bubba smile at least half a dozen times. It warms my heart to see these guys enjoying themselves up there after all these years. SUPER LOUD (not necessarily a bad thing) and just fantastic. Highlight of the crowd was a lady holding up ner vanity NY license plate LUVGEDDY. That's a fan for you... and a chick, no less (and kinda hot to boot ;-)
#31 - Posted 7/24/10 @2:18AM by musicofthespheres [contact]

enjoying the few reviews that have come in so far. glad the thunderheads were nothing more than a distant overture.

kelly d - I habitually skip all the geddy-love posts, but compliments to petie for an excellent sign...

Hey this finale for Leave That Thing Alone from the Ottawa show is awesome!

Can anyone hear play an ode to Guns & Roses near the end of the piece?

link
#33 - Posted 7/24/10 @2:36AM by patrush

Hint: in Geddy's bassline.
#34 - Posted 7/24/10 @2:49AM by random_sample [contact]

Ode to Guns and Roses, really? I think that might be a coincidence. Doubt Rush has every been into Guns and Roses, but I could be wrong.

24 - Kelly D(ear) -

I couldn't leave you guys all the way back where you were! Like I told Petie, it was a butt-slappin', I mean- bass slappin' - good time!

Who cares if we acted like Jonas Brothers fans, we had a memorable evening, full of lightheartedness and joy.

I feel very sorry for those that see less than the best from this band, I find some of these comments toward sweet Alex very unkind. He smiled at me as he passed, several times, and I saw only how divine he is.

In fact, I haven't seen Alex so energetic and jubilant since Counterparts, he is my hero!

To all my new friends - Megan, Claudia, Bev, Farid, Mike, and Darren - it was so wonderful to finally meet you!

xoxo

Sandy Foster
Brookhaven & Delhi, NY

Make it a great day.
#37 - Posted 7/24/10 @3:32AM by philradz [contact]

If you were referring to my comments, no one is immune to some harmless ribbing - not even my favorite guitarist in the world.
#38 - Posted 7/24/10 @3:36AM by patrush

The new songs sound really great live. At least from the bootlegs I've seen, even with the crappy audio quality of a bootleg, they are awesome.

The LA show is coming up soon...
#39 - Posted 7/24/10 @8:32AM by New World Kid [contact]

Alex probably smiled at you because you're a female, not because he's sweet. I'm fine with that too. Let's just call a spade a spade. I think RUSHGirls would probably do well to keep their exploits to themselves, it just stirs the pot on here.
#40 - Posted 7/24/10 @9:20AM by Archimer [contact]

Kelly D and Mommy of Zuzu: Wow! Sounds like an amazing time. :) The shirt thing is absolutely RAD. Sounds like you got some love from everybody up on stage there!

New World Kid: Are you saying that Alex only spares smiles for the ladies? :P

51 MORE DAYS!
#41 - Posted 7/24/10 @10:56AM by Ricbass4003 [contact]

#24 :-) That is totally AWESOME!! Can't wait to see the pics. I knew something had to be happening from some status updates. There was something rumblin last night and it just wasn't the thunder thru NY last night.

#39 & 40 - Did Alex say in the doc that it was about the chicks? LOL.

I am also counting down the days till Allentown, maybe something spectacular will happen that day as well. A girl can dream.

PS. I also hope if RUSH would get the nod from the hall they would decline.
#42 - Posted 7/24/10 @10:58AM by crunchsite [contact]

Great show. Was about 15 rows back in the center, and the sound quality was excellent. Took some pics

#43 - Posted 7/24/10 @11:07AM by WorkingmanDc [contact]

I agree with #39, female Rush fans get noticed by the boys in the front rows as they are definitely in the minority. Saw the boys earlier this week and I'm not a fan of Alex goofing around and going through the motions on alot of the older songs they play tour after tour including 2112. 2112 to me is them at their hard prog rock best and I expect to see Alex tear up his solo parts, but he continues to play the entire song with a goofy look on his face and clown around. Also, thought I would finally see Alex play the exciting opening solo on electric guitar to La Villa on this tour being that it's the first song of the encore. No!!! Instead, they did some slow buildup of the beginning melody and then went full speed right into the middle of the song, thus playing an abbreviated version. What do they have against the beginning solo of this song and why have I not been able to see it since my first show in 1983? I did enjoy the reggae beginning to working man and the sudden break into the hard rock version of the song, that was cool...
#44 - Posted 7/24/10 @11:30AM by Kelly D [contact]

*ahem* Rush chicks shan't be silenced. . . just like haters gonna hate, Rush chicks gonna squee. That's just the way it is, especially when we get noticed by the guys. Some girl made a funny sign last night that got her Neil's sticks and Bev (aka RUSHGIRL) got some too.

A few of us all talked to Howard after the show and he said that he'd be making some more cocktail videos to put on the site! He also said that the overhead lighting rig was based on a "charm" that he wears around his neck of a black widow spider encased in plastic. We got pics, natch. Creepy cool, eh?
#45 - Posted 7/24/10 @12:11PM by The Sphere [contact]

Rush on the Road pictures... 4th one in... John Arrowsmith caught Pratt with a HUGE smile when interacting with Alex... very nice to see them having so much fun!... especially Neil!

Cheers!
#46 - Posted 7/24/10 @12:40PM by New World Kid [contact]

Kelly my 12 year old (at the time) can play the R30 Medley, YYZ, et al on drums with no music playing from memory. He brought his practice pad and sticks in the car to play on the way to Boston. We even went to the drum shop in Portland just to see Neil's snare.

Understand I have respect for you as a person & feel a kindred spirit to you as a fellow RUSH fan and I want to make that clear - as I do to everyone else. I am impressed when I see females at the RUSH concerts. I don't care if they came with someone or are alone. If they know the songs - to me it is a cool thing. But your poster had blatant sexual innuendo. By that, you set a precedent. I saw Neil looking at it, because I was in his line of sight looking to you. Then I saw you with sticks. That burned for awhile.

Bottom line is some of the girls are using their wiles for attention and us old timers will never be cool with that. Understand if someone behaves like a groupie they will lose respect.
#47 - Posted 7/24/10 @12:46PM by New World Kid [contact]

#43 I bet the boys thought they were playing in a living room afer the Quebec gig. Neil's solo was an especially strong performance though. It seemed like his heart was in it vice a lot of Lerxt's antics. I probably need to lighten up. RUSH was life for me at one time.
#48 - Posted 7/24/10 @1:07PM by A-CELL-OF-AWARENESS [contact]

i am going to write SPAC management an email and THANK them for not being the Gestappo many venues have become such as Starlight and the worst of all...Mohegan Sun!!!!! They did not 'police' the PIT at all, and low and freakin' behold, nobody had any problems nor was anyone having any problems with anyone else. left to our own devices, everyone acted like civilized people fans without any solutions looking for a problem running around overexerting the only authority they've ever had in life. Camden was very good too, surprisingly.
#49 - Posted 7/24/10 @1:17PM by A-CELL-OF-AWARENESS [contact]

p.s. i met a bunch of really weird people again that go to RUSH concerts all over the country. just seems really creepy. get a life people. i mean, what kind of wack job would need to go to 5, 6, 12 or so shows in a year!? what the hell does that even COST!?!? the worst of all is that a-cell-of-awareness guy with the LIFESON license plate from Colorado, he goes all over the country. where does he get the money? he sure doesn't seem very intelligent, think he dropped out of 6th grade, twice. how does he get off work to get to those shows all over, probably an unemployed bum or a white collar criminal, or a bank robber! i heard he's going to Jones Beach, that's all 4 shows this week. Why so hard-core? it's only RUSH. it's not like it's Bachman Turner Overdrive, now that would make total sense. I'm gonna stay away from him from now on...

Dude, that wasn't me. It was some other lucky girl. Get over it. And did you see the shirts that they were tossing out? They say "Nobody beats my sausage!" C'mon. . . life is unfair AND amusing. It happens.
#51 - Posted 7/24/10 @2:36PM by mommy_of_zuzu [contact]

50 -

Hear, hear, Kelly!

I was a tad confused, too - that wasn't even you that got the sticks!

Maybe some of the grumpy old-timers don't get any love because they're standing there fuming about what the band did or didn't do to please just them.

Open your mind! Lighten your heart! Be happy with what you have, people, this is supposed to be fun!
#52 - Posted 7/24/10 @2:56PM by Jediyyz [contact]

I think it's time to explode the myth that women are not to be seen at Rush shows! At our first show of this tour in Albuquerque, 8 of the 12 family members in attendance were of the fairer persuasion!

For the Snakes & Arrows tours...my two daughters garnished sticks, picks, a shirt and recognition...(without making any signs I might add)...as for me, the one that started it all...I got the joy of seeing them happy and the satisfaction that they understand what music can and should be! That's good enough for me!

Endlessly Rocking!
#53 - Posted 7/24/10 @2:57PM by katskahnne [contact]

Kelly, Petie and Mommy_of_Zusu - sounds like you had an AWESOME time!!! Wish I were there but I could almost feel the excitement from here! "Rush chicks gonna squee"...I want that on a t-shirt, woman! :-)

Currently earning the bulk of my funds for the Gibson Amphitheatre show. My Japanese isn't as rusty as I was afraid it was, but...does anyone know a kid-friendly treatment for jet lag? My adorable little charge is having a heck of a time getting up to par energywise and I want her to enjoy her visit...

Wish me good luck on the tix. Praying, hoping and losing sleep for pit for 8/11, hoping I can have a front row experience of my own to squee about! (And our seats for Irvine...welllllll at least they're on the same side of I-405 as the stage, LOL...)

52 -

That't the spirit, Jediyyz! I've never done a thing for any swag I've received - I prefer to give the band gifts, in fact. Just hearing their music is gift.

Rush on!

I've always wished all of us RIABer girls could go to one show together, and I hope you win front row seats - ohayo!

#57 - Posted 7/24/10 @5:13PM by sdb1001001 [contact]

Dude, If I were a musician who had been playing to a 98% male audience for 30 years (and probably more than half of the remaining 2% dragged there and uninterested), I would be ecstatic that more women that were excited, energetic, and knew the lyrics were showing up to my shows. More kids too! You gonna tell me that they wouldn't get some extra attention? Some of these women seem to have genuine crushes on individual band members. We know that with these guys there's no risk of groupiism (?) anyways, but it's still gotta feel good to them.

Also, women using their femininity/sexuality to their advantage is just the way of things. Some of them do it even when they don't know they're doing it. Get over it.
#58 - Posted 7/24/10 @5:14PM by Kelly D [contact]

Um. . . why are you cursing women for getting attention in a sassy manner when the guys make plenty of sexual jokes themselves? If it works, it works.
#59 - Posted 7/24/10 @5:25PM by philradz [contact]

Things got heavy here in a hurry, yeesh. Thinking about it now though, I think the ratio was about 25/75 of chicks to dudes up in the balcony. A lot of NEW fans too, I have no idea if it's due to the documentary or not but it's still neat watching a new generation come in. Also you guys are talking as if flirting in the front row is the equivalent of screwing them mid-song. Lighten up.
#60 - Posted 7/24/10 @5:55PM by iluvgeddy05 [contact]

Glad I got to see some other great RUSH license-plate holders last night! My photo is on rush.com with the LUVGEDDY plates!
#61 - Posted 7/24/10 @6:03PM by Kelly D [contact]

Thank you, philradz. It also doesn't hurt that mommy, Petie, and I made Rush.com thanks to John Arrowsmith's photo of us in front of Geddy!
#62 - Posted 7/24/10 @6:24PM by drmike [contact]

I wondered if that pick of Geddy included the RIAB ladies in the front row. And the LUVGEDDY plate was great to see too. Congrats on your notoriety!
#63 - Posted 7/24/10 @6:32PM by patrush

Gosh, this thread has turned sour and boring.

Come on. There should be more rush girls are the concerts, ain't nothing wrong with that. As long as everyone behaves in a civilized manner, it's all fine.

My 4 years old daughter is liking it when I play Rush CDs in the car. To the point she tells my wife to leave the CDs playing when she tries to put on NPR radio.
#64 - Posted 7/24/10 @7:38PM by GedHed [contact]

What kid wouldn't prefer music to NPR? Trust me...it wouldn't take *Rush* to divert mine from NPR. I think Bing Crosby might even do the trick. lol!
#65 - Posted 7/24/10 @8:19PM by random_sample [contact]

I like that there are more and more female Rush fans all the time! And that pic of the woman with the "LuvGeddy" licence plate is just plain cute!
#66 - Posted 7/24/10 @8:28PM by random_sample [contact]

Geddy was right in the Rush in Rio Boys in Brazil doc. when he said hot/humid weather gives him a bad case of "the frizzies". haha. Been a hot/ humid wave here ,too...and storms /rain weekly for the last month. Looks like it was a hot and humid one at that last show.
#67 - Posted 7/24/10 @8:35PM by speedwaygirl [contact]

I never understood the whole "chicks aren't Rush fans because they don't get it". As a female Rush fan that's been going to see the boys for about 30 years now, I never thought about it like guys dig Rush and girls don't. For me it was more about being a musician. As a musician, how can you not "get" Rush?

Took my son to his first Rush show last night and got him hooked. Nice to see the new generation of Rush fans that were in attendance at SPAC.

As a female Rush fan since I was 10 years old, I have no shame. If someone is jealous the ladies are getting more attention... oh well lol

In any event, the show kicked major ass. I swear, each show gets better and more tight, energetic and just plain awesome every time!

Signed, LUVGEDDY :)

Saratoga Springs is a nice town but it was difficult to walk around and tour it during the day because of the pouring rain. Had a good lunch at a sports bar, but I don't remember the name of it. Sam Adams beer on tap! Everybody was very friendly. How did all the Rush fans get so old? Oh yeah, Camera Eye was great. Caravan was cool. By the way, that Geddy Lee fellow is quite good on the bass.

Amazing time, it was my buddys 73rd show, my 2nd and my gf's first. We had a good time, we got bumped by some bigger people that needed more space. But overall we had a great time, and then me and my bud headed down to jones beach.

Great show! Too many kids and ugly chicks. The Goo Goo Dolls had better looking women at the show than Rush did. 20 years of shows and the band is only getting better. Camera Eye, Presto, Time Stand Still, and Marathon were sick! See you all in September.

I saw a comment that I thought was relative to the SPAC show and I can't locate it, so I'll conclude it was about another show, and I'll restate as best I can and then branch out with my own comments.

The other guys' comments that I can't find: the sound is so #%$@#%$*#@ loud that it is bordeline white noise. It drives me nuts and has driven me nuts for many years. If you sit dead center, it takes a good four or five songs to get blast adjusted to Neil's bass drum. I get it. Bass is important. Back it off a notch so I can hear music. Rush has been my favorite band 29-ish years. The only band I've ever shelled out the cash to see play live, and I've done that more than my fair share of times, and I really, really wish they would just ratchet it back a little bit - not much - from "obliterate" to "kill".

Like the "other guy", I want my lasers back. Economy is affecting us all, everybody likes to scale back, got it, whatever. Marathon without lasers is like Red Barchetta without the animated road background - not the live-film stuff, but the animated one they originally toured with. and gimme back my lasers.

Now to my own comments. It was interesting to see MP played in sequence, and the crowd reaction to each song. There's kind of a pecking order for those songs, and it was evident in the crowd reaction. All those songs are loved by fans, but some get bigger reactions than others. Camera Eye was more interesting than I thought it would be, but frankly, I've never understood why so many people have craved that song to be played live for so long. Highly repetitious. There's a reason they never trotted that one out before, and it isn't just that it is time consuming.

I took my familiy to the show. Wife, daughter (7 - her second show), and son (5 - his first). I have mixed feelings about taking the kids so young, but I've enjoyed Rush for so long, and had the opportunity to take the kids before the band hangs it up, which eventually they will do. We had balcony seats, and the kids wore shooting muffs. The boy fell asleep at 10pm during Camera Eye. Not even the pyros in Far Cry stirred him. My daughter made it through her first show at age 5 without dropping asleep, but he just crashed. Too long a day coming all the way from Buffalo - hey Rush - play Buffalo next time!!!! Come on. We're like Canada south here, and have ALWAYS supported you guys.

SPAC is a tremendous facility. Great place to see a show.

It is more than a mild source of irritation that the stage is set up so that only the people who are almost dead center can really see the screen in back. It obviously can't be helped, but it is annoying to have to look the skits up on youtube later to show the kids.

Wow. I'm Mr. Negative here. I really did enjoy the show. I wouldn't put it in my top ten Rush shows, but that second set in particular was great. Alex's acoustic tune was very pretty, Neil's drum solo was tremendous - very different than what we've seen in recent years. A nice changeup.

Thanks, Geddy for the awesome shirt!!!! Thank you, Alex and Neil for putting on THE BEST Rush concert of my life! Everything about it was wonderful, absolutely THE BEST! Some memories last forever and Saratoga will never be forgotten. I'll be babbling about it still in another fifty years! It was amazing, amazing, amazing! ♥

Thank you, John Arrowsmith for capturing my fellow RIAB Geddicorns (mommy_of_zuzu and KellyD) and I in front row! It was a tremendous experience (to put it mildly)! Earth moving is more like it!!!!!!

All I can say is: WOW!!!!! :D

P.S. I will never apologize for being a girl at a Rush show. I will never apologize for thinking Geddy is hot and shouting it from the mountain tops. That's how it was, is, and shall always be. Life is too short to worry about what annoys male Rush fans. I go to shows and am respectful of others. I'm not hurting anyone by being there! Life as a Geddicorn is a chosen path and I owe no one an apology or an explanation for lovin' da Geddy or Rush. Everyone is entitled to love Rush in their own right. 'Nuff said.

Love da Geddy! Miss da Geddy! Next stop: Auburn, WA!!! ♥
