Hi everyone.
Does anyone know where I can get a mp3 copy of the song Hemispheres [live version]? I would pay for it if Rush would only release it, but they have'nt. Anyone feel they know the answer to my problem?
I don't know where else to turn.

Ok, unrelated to this thread's subject, sorry. And I will get flack for this comment ,I know it-but I will say it anyway.
When I first watched the Rush documentary (I mentioned this before and I remember a few others felt the same) I skipped the "Trekkies" part on the special features disk. I had a feeling I wouldn't like it.
Well, I was right. haha. I just watched it for the hell of it (and curiosity) and I was cringing, watching it.
That is my biggest criticism about the documentary. The way they portrayed "Rush fans" as if we/they are all the same- Nerdy and goofy. I'm not saying it to be "mean", but Im just saying that there is a wide spectrum or range of types of Rush fans out there and for that documentary, they seemed to focus mostly on the geekiest and goofiest and weirdest.
Aside from that ,I liked most of the documentary, but I did find things I didn't like or felt like they focused on some things too much or other things not enough. They do good work (Sam Dunn and Scot Mcfadyen) but I think they missed the mark in a few areas. Just my opinion and wondering if anyone else shares my view.
#23 - Posted 7/13/10 @9:58PM by mousky

Got tickets to the Saturday show. It's been 15 years or so since I last saw them in my former hometown. Saw Rush in Detroit on the S&A tour. That was my first time seeing them in an outdoor venue and in the US. Can't wait for Saturday.
#24 - Posted 7/13/10 @10:20PM by kevin [contact]

#22 I grew up in an area that Rush was very popular. I was a jock/Surfer type and all of my friends were the same. We were huge Rush fans and we couldn't be further from that stereo type. My brother was a huge fan in the 70's and he was a stoner/surfer as were all his buddies and they idolized Rush and again nothing close to nerdy. We lived near the border of Mexico and I had a a lot of Spanish friends and Rush was hugely popular in their community. The Band itself could be considered bit nerdy I suppose but I agree the stereo type is narrow and not a true reflection of the Rush's fans. IMO
#25 - Posted 7/13/10 @10:21PM by bakes7 [contact]

#22 I totally agree, I was never a nerd or thought of one because of my love for Rush. The only negative comments of the band was Geddy`s high pitched voice, but he is like a fine bottle of wine... it improves with age.
#26 - Posted 7/13/10 @10:23PM by double-agent [contact]

#22 Umm...many of those "nerdy and goofy" fans you are referring to frequent this site and happen to be dear friends of mine. Don't judge, but if you can't help yourself, perhaps you should keep it to yourself. I mean, it's a free country...say what you like. But keep in mind what Thumper's mom said on "Bambi" - "If you don't have something nice to say, don't say nothing at all."

With all due respect,

A proud Rush Nerd
#27 - Posted 7/13/10 @10:37PM by random_sample [contact]

#26-
Well, if you look at a few posts right after mine, you will see a few people agreeing with what I said.
You or anyone else that takes it a different way can take it however you want. My point was, like #24 post said, it's a narrow view of Rush fans, portrayed in the documentary. In other words, I think they could have shown a WIDER spectrum of types of Rush fans ,thats all. There seemed to be this "slant" toward the geekier types. Yes, I admit I used the word "weird" and I am sorry if I offend anyone with that, I just found a few of the fans they showed to be a little weird. For example, the guy talking about how he identified with the guy in the Subdivisions video, I found a bit lame and I guess it bugs me that people watching that documentary that maybe aren't that familiar with Rush , might get the idea that Rush fans are all a bunch of people like that ONE guy. Personally, I took alot of other things away from the song Subdivisions, other than the focus of a teenage kid feeling left out or alienated or alone. I like discussing things, ok? Excuse me if I offended yours or anyone else's feelings.
#28 - Posted 7/13/10 @11:00PM by kevin [contact]

I love the documentary but listening the guy talk about watching the cool kids driving away in the car, paraphrasing
"to the party he wasn't invited to" Sorry but that has nothing to do with the history of Rush. Yes they may have been a bit nerdy growing up, but come on. Subdivisions never meant that to me, Subdivisions to me was about this eighties cookie cutter neighborhood I grew up in. Being a so called nerd or geek fan is one narrow side of the story, this band didn't sell a gazillion records to nerds! Sorry thats non-sense.

BTW One of my favorite moments in the documentary was when Donna Halper talks about "every listener in the audience felt like that" then Working Man kicks in, thats powerful stuff..
#29 - Posted 7/13/10 @11:19PM by random_sample [contact]

#28- You obviously got my point and I agree with what you have to say ,too. That was what I took from the song Subdivisions too.

My favourite moments were some of the comments by Trent Rezner, Jack Black had a few funny but also good things to say, Billy Corgan. I also liked the part "assuming control" focusing on the 2112 period. I liked the goofy stuff with Alex being "Chokin Al Lifeson". That was hilarious. Donna Halper was good, too.
People I didnt really find great, were the Pantera drummer, the Dream Theatre drummer, The Freddy Gruber part (sorry but I just dont "get" that guy). There were lots of good parts though. I'd say I liked about 75% of it, alot and the rest I either didn't agree with or thought the focus was in the wrong area and they left other significant things out.
#30 - Posted 7/13/10 @11:45PM by patrush

Good points Kevin. The song isn't just about nerdy kids. I also had the same impression of it being about cookie cutter suburbs. I see the "architectural" (or urban planning) side of the lyrics. Same for the song Grand Designs, it's very architectural song.
#31 - Posted 7/13/10 @11:48PM by patrush

I actually didn't really think the documentary was that great. I liked the powerful bit about the Working Man song. But other than that, I thought it was an average documentary. I'm happy for Rush though, to see them collect these rewards at this stage. But you gotta admit, there wasn't anything mind-blowing in the documentary. interesting documentary, but not much beyond that.

It's nothing like listening to Jacob's Ladder for the first time while stoned in the early 1980s.

Jacob's ladder.....one of my ultimate fave Rush songs. I had Carress of steel cranked in my car today. Kind of rediscovering it, after not listening to it for a while.

architecually, absolutely but not in sense with the public attitude. Grand designs describes the mindset behind economics and designing the basis for a new government. I could absolutely be completely wron but thats just my opinion.

the show was awesome! i had a front row seat on geddys side and it was a blast!! they were all having fun on stage, making jokes/cracking a smile etc. it was a 9/10 !!
this is my second show (i saw them in sarnia friday june 9), i am seeing them friday as well!
#38 - Posted 7/14/10 @1:42AM by katskahnne [contact]

I dunno...fans nerdy? I remember my senior year of high school, I got called into the principal's office. Also called in were the school's "braintrust", all the kids - all guys, I think - who got straight A's in science and math and were generally considered the "intelligent" kids. Well, we'd all scored over 140 on the Stanford-Benet thing so were considered "geniuses" or whatever, and afterward my friends were all asking me "What were you doing in the principal's office with Todd and Steve and so-and-so?" I told 'em, and none of us still got it. I was still considered an outcast rock and roll bad girl.

Guess I was destined for Rush fandom? ::shrugs::

Hello Rush and Rush Fans!

I have been a Rush fan for over 35 years! I first saw Rush at Larry's Hideaway on Carlton Street (just down from MLG) in 1974.Yes they were a bar band at one time with Max Webster, Goddo, Rough Trade and others at the Gas Works and the Good OL El' etc.I still remember those days when they played high school gyms, Mornington Drive,Foot In Coldwater and that other band Greg Godovich was in.The point is I have been around with Rush from the start seeing nearly 20 of their concerts through the years. The last time I saw them was at the ACC during the Snakes and Arrows tour.I was really pumped for their show at the Molson Amplitheatre tonight, but not so pumped to get kicked out before the show really got going.First let me state I have never been kicked out of a concert before, and I always thought that the people that got the boot deserved it.I thought concert security was necessary and justified in most cases, but tonight I feel I got the short end of the stick and I hope the Rush fans in section 203 Row S to WW remember me getting thrown out for no apparent reason. I wrote to Ontario Place when I finally got home tonight....

Hi,

I was forcibly removed from the Rush Concert by the security staff for really no apparent reason tonight.I was with three other friends with seats in section 203 Row WW seats 1 and 2 and Row T seats 6 and 7. It was great we could see each other and enjoy Rush together. At one point I switched seats with one friend and watched the concert with another friend in row WW seat 1. Security asked for my ticket stub and I didn't have the one for that seat. I tried to explain that I was with my friends, and he was now using my original seat.Three of the security staff surrounded me after I could not produce the proper ticket stub and clutched me by the arms, they thought I was trying to scam a seat in a better section.Even after my friends ( and others around us... thank you) proved our seat tickets, I was looking in pockets for my stub as they still escorted me off the property.I found my original ticket tucked down in my pants pocket shortly before being forciblby escorted to the Ontario Place gates and showed it to them.It was grabbed from my hand and I was shoved off Ontario Place property.I have been going to Ontario Place concerts since the 1970's when it was still the Forum. The Forum was my first concert experience and later I proposed to my wife there at the Dr Hook concert in 1982.I have never had any issues with security or the Ontario Place staff over the years I have been visiting. I understand how security is important, but I also understand that our country is still a democacy and we are still innnocent until proven guilty.
#41 - Posted 7/14/10 @7:40AM by mysticbeat [contact]

#40, Whoa, sorry that happened to you, why should they care if you switch seats? I think some of these rent-a-cop security people that themselves way too seriously.
So if that is the case, what about the scenerio of a really good close to the front seat that is empty? Is no one allowed to "move up" to that seat, as long as the original ticket holder does not show up?
#42 - Posted 7/14/10 @7:59AM by Rayzer2112 [contact]

All I can say was wow....they guys seemed so much better tonight than in Sarnia. Possibly some home town fan inspiration. The seat was awesome, section 103 row F. Special thanks to Chris and the crazy set of circumstances that made this seat fall into my hands. See you all on Saturday at the ACC

#40 - Sorry to hear that. I find the rent a cops always try to prove something when it's unnecessary.
#43 - Posted 7/14/10 @8:59AM by subdivincent [contact]

ha - in that Toronto Sun review, the reviewer describes Rush as being "forty-something challenged".

my dear sir, our boys are pushin' 60.
#44 - Posted 7/14/10 @10:04AM by mkefromTO [contact]

I read the Toronto sun review on canoe.ca. Another bad review from someone who doesn't really know anything about music. "nicklebackish fireballs"? Since when are fireballs the domain of nickleback. who are nickleback anyway. I guess this guy didn't see the vapor trails tour or any other bands for the last thirty years.

I had a VIP ticket from the show. 8th row floors!! best seats I ever had at rush. it was so worth it. Always a great show!! I've go seats for the saturday show too. can't wait. I spoke with some guys that sat next to me and none of us have received our fan packs from the VIP purchase. has anyone got it?

Hey punkerpaul, sorry you got ejected from the show. that sucks. I do remember that dump Larry's Hideaway. Saw a lot of bands there. There always was some scary people in there. lol.
#45 - Posted 7/14/10 @10:08AM by paul [contact]

After reading the Toronto review, I'm beginning to think that there's a certain element of Rush fans that are permanently mired in the past. "Mixed results" for Caravan? Come on! This song and BU2B are, for me, the best stuff I've hear from them in years. The kind of stuff I've been waiting for.
But that's ever the case with Rush music isn't it? Something different for everyone and almost no one can agree on anything. Even the critics.
#46 - Posted 7/14/10 @11:03AM by evenoddsband [contact]

What's up with the gibe at Time Stand Still? Rush doesn't HAVE off nights. I'm sure it sounded fine. I hate critics, he scrutinizes every detail and still gives them a 4.5 rating! I just don't get it
#47 - Posted 7/14/10 @11:24AM by mrdriven [contact]

#40 - so sorry that happened to ya...i wish i was with ya to beat back the rental cops...

so much poison in power...the principles get left out...
#48 - Posted 7/14/10 @11:35AM by D-Slam

Actually, I was fifth row Alex-side and I had the distinct impression in the first few songs that they were having a tough time getting started, so the "off night" remark rang true for me.

(It may have been because the show started late due to the INCREDIBLY lame pedestrian walkways into the venue, it takes FOREVER to get 16k people in or out of there).

To the guy who got thrown out... that sucks. Stupid rent-a-cops. I hope you are able to a) enjoy the Saturday show and b) get some compensation for your loss.
#49 - Posted 7/14/10 @12:00PM by Micky [contact]

Yep I feel for #40 ! THose bloody cops...quick to judge, quick to anger, slow to understand...
Good luck for next time !
#50 - Posted 7/14/10 @12:16PM by mkefromTO [contact]

Just another comment from last night' show and a few others I've seen since vapor trails tour. I can't hear Alex' guitar in some songs. most notably Far cry. The bass and keys seems to drown him out at times. I'm a guitar player and I mostly want to hear him. I don't like the mix.
#51 - Posted 7/14/10 @12:25PM by Sarnia Bound [contact]

Punker,

I feel for you..myself & a friend drove from Traverse City, MI for the Sarnia show. During our "interview" at Blue Water customs, it was discovered that in 1992 he served a controlled substance charge (by the way, not a parking ticket since). I still so fucken pissed..bottom line is that he spent the night in Port Huron, I turned back and got in my VIP section...was Alex drunk? Prolly!

I also understand these circumstances happen to Kanucks entering the states too. The concert alot of fun...oh, fuck you Blue Water Bridge Canadian "Immigraton Patrol"...the American agents were very polite and also shook their heads at what those pricks did to our evening. Nice job Canada, the first contact into your country was full of arrogance and pricks.

Please come to the D next year!!!

Wade
#52 - Posted 7/14/10 @2:19PM by blakean99 [contact]

Awesome show last night, though I found it to be too loud in the first half.

I think I saw Gordon Lightfoot at the show last night, walking in front of the 300 section towards the exit. Can anyone confirm, or is this a case of the world's most uncanny lookalike? This guy did have security walking in front and back, so it would be a major coincidence. Also saw Ray Daniels a few times.
#53 - Posted 7/14/10 @2:37PM by D-Slam

A nice moment during Camera Eye: some fans right at the front were posing for a picture (facing towards the audience, the band in the background)... Alex noticed this and bent down a bit, looked into the camera and made a funny face! (like a random goofy stranger would). I hope that turned out, it would be the best photo ever.

I too thought the mix was lacking some guitar and had too much boomy bass guitar. From where I was (up close), the kick drum just sounded like the worlds loudest fart, not great at all.

And that was an interesting final movie, with the two awkward "fans". I'm sure this has been discussed to death here elsewhere, but I think the band was Trying To Send A Message to their fans: "stop with the grovelling when you meet us!"
#54 - Posted 7/14/10 @4:24PM by Slowda [contact]

A Toronto show is a lifelong goal of mine. Hopefully soon.
#55 - Posted 7/14/10 @5:26PM by limelighter [contact]

great show last night. stared at geddy all night, he was definitely on fire. drum solo was excellent including criss crosses and hard agression. sorry, have to go. will include meet and greet pics when i get them. all 3 were very gracious as usual
#56 - Posted 7/14/10 @6:29PM by random_sample [contact]

#51-
I have to comment about what you were saying about the customs officers at the Port Huron/ Sarnia border.
I'm Canadian and live on the border of Canada and the U.S, and my experience has been the opposite. Arrogant ,power tripping U.S customs officers. Obviously, it depends what country you are from. The U.S customs officers scrutinize you more if you're Canadian and the Canadian customes officers scrutinize you more if you are from the U.S. I know how you feel, because there's been a few times I have encountered really arrogant asses at the U.S customs. They are doing their job ,by policing the border but some of them definitely can be jerks about it. Just thought I'd give you the perspective from this side of the border.
#57 - Posted 7/14/10 @8:53PM by The Sphere [contact]

#52 - Yes, it was Gordon Lightfoot. I was at the back of section 101 on the aisle... he was sitting in the front row of section 202, just behind and across the aisle from us.

The show was excellent from my vantage point. The guys looked to be having fun.... and home-town crowd was great. Very powerful bass sound... Neil's floor toms were really loud through the PA, as was Geddy's bass. I think there were 4 bass cabinets stacked on both sides of the stage, lined up underneath the speaker arrays providing that power. Came in handy on BU2B... and with the "steam" being thrown out by their "amps", made for a great live tune.

FYI I have uploaded several pictures of the concert.

Cheers!
#58 - Posted 7/14/10 @9:21PM by Toronto Writer [contact]

Loved the show. Thought Neil's solo was fantastic. They're all playing so well. As usual, they were quite tight too. It's great to see. They also looked like they were really having fun. Loved all the video footage. Made for a complete entertainment package.

I sat in Section 202 and had a few "star" sightings as well. Terry Brown was seated in the row behind me, Ray Danniels was 10 rows in front and Denise Donlon (link was 1 row in front of me.
#59 - Posted 7/14/10 @10:15PM by Enviro_tech [contact]

Hey cool photos The Sphere! You caught mom & I entering into the 200 level in that first shot. :D

Man despite the heat that was a great show, still thinking about it tonight.

And about the security at Molson Amp, I get the feeling it's very much the downer patrol at times, which really sucks. I never got frisked entering many of the state side shows I saw on the Snakes & Arrows tour, but Molson Amp never fails to enforce all regulations to the max.
#60 - Posted 7/14/10 @10:53PM by brilondon [contact]

To numbers 22 and 24, you are not true Rush fans if you honestly worry about what others think about us. Some of us who have followed the band for most of our lives can relate what they sing about and what they are about. If Rush themselves worried about what was said about them they would have given up after the Caress of Steel tour. We would have never had 2112 or any other great music. This is just the documentary makers opinion of what a Rush fan is. I as you, in your heart do you really care what someone else thinks about you? I will be at the ACC performance on Saturday. I saw them in Chicago for the not rained out show and was as usual blown away with the performance.
#61 - Posted 7/14/10 @11:18PM by The Sphere [contact]

#59 Enviro_tech - well, isn't that cool, indeed! Glad you liked the pics.
#62 - Posted 7/15/10 @1:48AM by random_sample [contact]

#60-
Oh God..not the "you are not a true Rush fan if.." crap again. Are you 12 years old or what?? You don't "decide" if someone is a "true" Rush fan or not.
You didn't get the gist of what I was saying and a few others agreed with. It wasn't so much that we worry what others think. The point was that I thought Rush fans were represented as these weird, nerdy people in the documentary. I was just saying they could have shown a wider spectrum of Rush fans, maybe. Instead, they seemed to pick a few sorta nerdy ones. In other words, I thought (and a few people agreed) they could have done a more accurate represention of Rush fans, thats all.
Anyway, enjoy the ACC show!
#63 - Posted 7/15/10 @10:09AM by Enviro_tech [contact]

Lots of great pro shot photos from Molson Amp link

I love how the person gets Geddy's leap in Spirit of Radio, focuses in on his shoes in one shot, and even gets a pic of Alex side stage during the intro film. Person must've done their homework cause the pics are all fantastic.
#64 - Posted 7/15/10 @10:37AM by Rob1855 [contact]

Two questions:
(1) What are Alex & Geddy throwing into the crowd before the encore? T-Shirts? Sausage?

(2) There are microphones placed at instrument level on Alex's & Geddy's Mic Stands. They're not decorative - I've seen them there on previous tours as well. What in world are they for? You can see them at:

@Enviro_tech, I would suggest you go and see the final photo of the review at hellbound.ca for another really good shot of the bottom of Geddy's shoes during that jump:

#64:

1) They were indeed throwing t-shirts, as i was fortunate to catch one that Geddy threw. It is a black "Gershon's" Deli (in red lettering) t-shirt with a cartoon of the deli owner character Geddy plays in the opening film on the front. The back says, "Nobody beats my sausage"! ;) Lol!

Unfortunately it is an XL, and i am only a medium. Still, a once-in-a-lifetime Rush keepsake! GEDDY freakin' LEE threw this freakin' t-shirt to ME! :D

Also: Anyone notice the irony of the closing video? *spoliers* We all know Neil does NOT return to the green room after a show with Geddy & Alex! He heads straight for his private bus to shower and drink Macallan (or whatever) and get ready for his next motorcycle ride. I know it's only a humorous skit, but i couldn't help thinking of the irony of Neil being in that video. If that were 'real life' Neil would call security on those 2 guys before they could even spit out a word. The 9-string bass was funny though.
