Posted at 5:05PM | comments (167)

UPDATE - 6/28@12:18PM: Here's a review of the film from the New York Times' TV review department (thanks Steve H).

The Rush documentary Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage finished up its theatrical run this past week and will get its television premiere this evening at 9PM on VH1, VH1 Classic and Palladia. Unfortunately the Rush 2112/Moving Pictures Classic Albums special that was slated to air on VH1 Classic at 8PM just before the documentary has been pulled for an unspecified reason. The film will also be released on DVD/Blu-ray this coming Tuesday, June 29th complete with over an hour of bonus materials.

Just watched this in the UK on Blu-Ray (arrived 2 days early). Interesting, entertaining, fulfilling, astonishing, thought provoking and inspiring (too many -ings, sorry.).

Hope they make the Frankenstein Concept Album. This could include a cover of "Putting On The Ritz" from Mel Brooks' "Young Frankenstein" as a bonus track. Imagine Alex pushing out the vocal.

THENTH!
#11 - Posted 6/26/10 @6:34PM by kevin [contact]

Gay but I digress, I'm really bummed about the Classic Albums!
I want to know how the they recorded the intro piece to 2112...
#12 - Posted 6/26/10 @6:35PM by losingit2112 [contact]

So did anyone see the rehearsal photos that were updated? massive tease!
#13 - Posted 6/26/10 @6:45PM by drmike [contact]

That's the spirit, Kevin!

It is too bad they have pulled the Classic Albums, but I'm really psyched to finally see the doc! Thought about taping it on VHS, but I'll be getting the DVD in a few days anyway.

Did anyone else with the automatic Rolling Stone subscription notice that Beyond the Lighted Stage got a four star review?
#18 - Posted 6/26/10 @7:37PM by kevin [contact]

#17 First of all what in the hell are you doing with a Rolling Rag subscription..Just Kidding. It wouldn't surprise me, like Matt Stone says if you can't give it up for Rush now your just being an old dickhead...
#19 - Posted 6/26/10 @7:55PM by I Chose Freewill [contact]

Hello and Happy RUSH weekend good people. I am a brand new member to the site so be gental on me. You are my first after all. I am here near Seattle and looking at my Comcast guild on TV here. I am showing Lighted Stage at 6:00pm-8:30pm. "That Metal Show" from 8:30-9:00. R-30 playing from 9:00-11:30pm. All on VH1 CLASSIC.
BUT VH1 (regular) shows "Lighted Stage" on at 9:00pm.
It seems VH1 is doing some changing on the fly. I guess my point is, check your local listings if you plan on watching "Beyond The Lighted Stage" tonight on TV.
Find it and watch it !! RUSH N ROLL
#20 - Posted 6/26/10 @7:55PM by Gourdy Lee [contact]

Hey I didn't sign up for it, apparently I got by buying my tickets to the show. And that's the exact quote they use in the review as a matter of fact!
#21 - Posted 6/26/10 @8:03PM by Gourdy Lee [contact]

Also elsewhere in the news section of that magazine they have a little blurb about the movie and tour. Hey it may still be a sh*trag, but at the very least they're trying to give the boys some credit
#22 - Posted 6/26/10 @8:05PM by Astroboy [contact]

any idea where u can stream Vh1 online?!
#23 - Posted 6/26/10 @8:27PM by kevin [contact]

Hey guys give it up for Billy Corgan going big for the boys.
I have always loved the Smashing Pumpkins and Jimmy the drummer is also a huge Rush fan. you can here the influence..

Is it wrong to get teary-eyed over this film. I am so emotionally invested over the last 29 years that I find the need for a tissue.....Gawd, do I have to turn in my 'Man Card'???
Has anyone else found themselves misty over this documentary?
#38 - Posted 6/26/10 @10:13PM by kevin [contact]

OMG what a film. Puts a face on my love for Rush..
#39 - Posted 6/26/10 @10:14PM by Mark In CTown [contact]

Awesome movie so far. Just awesome. I love seeing all of the different people that have helped RUSH as well as influenced by RUSH. Can't wait for the 80's to come up now.
#40 - Posted 6/26/10 @10:14PM by hitmewithmusic [contact]

#37 Absolutely!!!
#41 - Posted 6/26/10 @10:14PM by AmyBrink [contact]

#37 it's okay if you have to turn in your "Man Card". I think the advertisers showing commercials during the documentary are eager to have you do so! Palladia commercial for I kid you not some sort of boob tape and VH1 commercials for feminine itch products! Yikes!

It is very emotional to see. Been following these guys since Hemispheres and have seen over 70 shows. I've been waiting for something like this for over thirty years now and there's no shame for me in admitting that it has gotten to me a bit.
#46 - Posted 6/26/10 @10:25PM by AmyBrink [contact]

Oh, Bare Lifts! (aka Boob Tape) WTF?
#47 - Posted 6/26/10 @10:26PM by hitmewithmusic [contact]

#41 Not to mention the oily bird commercials. I guess we should just dump a bunch of Dawn in the Gulf of Mexico.

Yeah, "Eclipse" commercials! NOT manly...

FYI, they cut a bit from film; it was (very) short but Presto, Roll The Bones and Counterparts were covered.

#62 - Posted 6/26/10 @11:34PM by Mark In CTown [contact]

One of the best documentaries I've seen in a long time. And not just because it was RUSH. It was well made and deserves some Oscar consideration. OK, maybe I'm a bit drunk saying that but still.. LOL It's an excellent film and RUSH fans and the band themselves should be proud of it. I can't wait to see the extra hour of stuff they left out when it comes out on Tuesday. The ending credits with the boys drinking and talking about the "Frankenstein" concept album was absolutely hilarious. "I'm going to get on my knees and kick your ass." I'm still laughing!

Thank you Scot and Sam for making this movie even if Ged said it would be boring.
#63 - Posted 6/26/10 @11:37PM by Gourdy Lee [contact]

What a great film. That's all I can say.
#64 - Posted 6/26/10 @11:37PM by bravest_face [contact]

Just caught the very end of the VH-1 Special, When is the Classic Rock Album special going show?
#65 - Posted 6/26/10 @11:38PM by Mark In CTown [contact]

To add, skipping over Roll The Bones is not that big of a deal. They did show Rupert Hine who I believe should be thanked for getting RUSH away from the keyboards and more to a 3 piece sound that they've had since. I really don't have a problem skipping over the late 80's early 90's simply because, well, it wasn't a very popular period. I was just glad they have come back from Neil's horrible tragedies to produce 2 of their best albums, Vapor Trails and Snakes and Arrows. To me, those 2 albums are the reason why RUSH have come full circle and gained popularity again.
#66 - Posted 6/26/10 @11:38PM by Bulldog81 [contact]

Just finished recording Rush Beyond the Lighted
Stage...sans commericals.....on my VHS tape that
also contains my beloved, long-suffering N. O.
Saints Superbowl win.

Really enjoyed the doc, and as the ad states,
it did tell me the story I did not know about
the band I do know. Thanks!!!
#67 - Posted 6/26/10 @11:41PM by Mr. K

Indeed... a great film.
#68 - Posted 6/26/10 @11:42PM by hitmewithmusic [contact]

#62 I second the Oscar nomination!
#69 - Posted 6/26/10 @11:42PM by Mr. K

They showed a couple of clips from Grace Under Pressure, but I can't recall if the album was even mentioned by name...
#70 - Posted 6/26/10 @11:44PM by bravest_face [contact]

#37. No wrong in the tears in the eye's, "the man card" LOL, I got the misty eyed when I saw the it at the "movies" last week end. I wonder if it was the beer I had...a real strong ale and some bangkok before.
#71 - Posted 6/26/10 @11:46PM by rushter777 [contact]

VH1 sucks - taped it on Palladia and will buy it on Tuesday.
#72 - Posted 6/26/10 @11:49PM by losingit2112 [contact]

well, I cried. that was fantastic. my only difference in opinion is concerning Presto and RTB. Don't shoot down some Rush albums because you didn't like them. Hold Your Fire was not on the brink of not being Rush-like... it was an amazing Rush album.
on the other hand, they understood COS very well.
#73 - Posted 6/26/10 @11:50PM by snowdog20 [contact]

Last week I bought a home theater system just for tonight's premier. The emotions I felt while watching the film with my family are indescribable. I think it was perfect, except for the commercials of course. I'll own the Blu-ray next week for sure.
#74 - Posted 6/26/10 @11:50PM by dbos_CX1 [contact]

Watched it again, with my brother whom I turned on to Rush. Definitely buying the DVD on Tuesday!

#69 - Posted 6/26/10 @11:42PM by Mr. K

They showed a couple of clips from Grace Under Pressure, but I can't recall if the album was even mentioned by name...

Your right, they didn't mentioned that album or that period for the band. Overall I was very moved by the clips and history behind the albums especially "Hemispheres". I never knew the story on how they felt about making it. A very good doc. overall, thankfully about Rush! I'll wait for the release of the DVD for all the extra footage not included tonight. Cheers!

Oh yeah, I wept like a child...
#77 - Posted 6/26/10 @11:58PM by Chargin13 [contact]

was geddy carrying a purse?
#79 - Posted 6/27/10 @12:11AM by soozm32 [contact]

It's not a purse. It's a satchel! Indiana Jones wears one.

#79 hahahahahahaha
#81 - Posted 6/27/10 @12:21AM by UnHoly Diver [contact]

Great documentary. I also love the fact that it was WMMS, The Buzzard that pretty much got them going here in the States. I have family that lived in Cleveland for about 30 years, and on the few occasions I was able to visit, my cousin was always listening to that station. I even had a Buzzard bumper sticker for a while.
#82 - Posted 6/27/10 @12:24AM by Kozmo4Rush [contact]

Very cool to see some friends on the TV. Also cool to see "Chromey" (Neil's first Chrome Slingerland kit used from '74-'77) make its first TV appearance ... I guess for the very first time.

Now, since this has aired, how many new fans do you think will be born out of just this one showing?

(Poster #77 - how'd it sound on the new system?)
#83 - Posted 6/27/10 @12:26AM by Gratefulrush [contact]

What was up with all the Boob-o-Rama commercials on Palladia? Not that it was a bad thing. Just not very good product placement.
#84 - Posted 6/27/10 @12:31AM by Rush Fan Since 1976 [contact]

I just read the NY Times review on the movie, and let me say this... The reviewer is a dick... There. I said it... I didn't like the VH1 version of the movie, due to the constant commercials... But I enjoyed the movie for the most part. Kinda surprised no mention of A Farewell To Kings amongst other things... looking forward to the extras Tuesday!
#85 - Posted 6/27/10 @12:33AM by I Chose Freewill [contact]

Saw it in the theater 2 weeks ago. Just sat down with the non RUSH loving wife and watched it on TV. Now watching it again for the second time tonight. Goose bumps and misty eyes in old dad's eye's. Must have been the dust. That is one quality movie. Long Live RUSH !! (starting to think the wife is warming to Rush. lol)
#86 - Posted 6/27/10 @12:44AM by alparrott [contact]

I'm in Alaska right now and I must be among the last people (who matter) in the world to see the movie... I'm just on the edge of my seat. It's triumphant.
#87 - Posted 6/27/10 @12:46AM by snowdog20 [contact]

#82... Unbelievable! I think I pissed the neighbors off but that's tough. Feeling the bass of vintage stuff vibrate through my sofa while the narrative and images played out was euphoric to say the least. Like I've been telling people since I received my first stereo system at the age of thirteen... If I can hear you talking, The music isn't loud enough!
#88 - Posted 6/27/10 @1:18AM by flofixer [contact]

Truly amazing documentary. Brought tears to my eyes when they were talking about Neil's tragedy, but also made me feel thirty years younger when watching the footage of the 2112 and Farewell to Kings concerts, when I first saw them live. The whole documentary just reinforced how special this group of 3 musicians is and that we are never in our lifetime likely to see anything as good.
#89 - Posted 6/27/10 @1:33AM by Louis2112 [contact]

DVR'd the movie...just finished watching it and it was great to see. I missed the other 200 or so Rush fans in the theater though. I am so glad I saw it in the theater, they were and are so BIGGER than life. And YES it is okay to cry or get misty about RUSH. I do and I am proud to say that because music is about emotions and it strikes at the primal essence of who we are as a person and as people-its why we are at the top of the food chain. Thank you Geddy, Alex and especially Neil...The Rocket Sauce will always flow...Thank you Donna Halper for spinning the first Rush album...Thank you Sam and Scott I love your work. Thank you fellow HARDCORE RUSH FANS-young and old, men and women-we make the BIG WHEEL spin...

#27 There needs to be a list compiled of all songs that feature 12 string acoustic. Right off the top of my head I can think of Lessons and Everyday Glory, as well as a host of newer songs, but I can't remember a lot of others.
#91 - Posted 6/27/10 @2:46AM by I Chose Freewill [contact]

Louis2112. Very well said.
RUSH n ROLL !!
#92 - Posted 6/27/10 @3:23AM by ROCON2112 [contact]

I just saw the documentary on VH1, and I was thinking about all the people who i've lost contact with over the years who might be have been watching it and saying to themselves "that kid Ryan I used to know, he loved Rush im sure hes watching".

I found myself laughing alot early on seeing the old pictures of Geddy and Alex when they were kids. The same way I feel when I see baby pictures of my friends. Thats how close I feel to these guys i've never even met.

I was trying to think of a name for chapter three. Knowing that 2112 was there break through album, I figured "we have assumed controll" would suit well. I was spot on. :-)

I think Rush is going to gain alot of fans because of this film. Some people that might know only a few songs now realize they have 19 albums out and theres alot more to discover. And people like us are going to be saying "I liked Rush before it was cool to like Rush".

Cant wait for the DVD and tour.
#93 - Posted 6/27/10 @7:45AM by katskahnne [contact]

I watched it and got more emotional than I did in the cinema - of course, I was at home and less self-conscious, but I definitely got teary. (I say man cards should have a special Rush exemption for events like this - I love and respect guys who aren't afraid of their emotions where it comes to music and other matters of the deepest heart.) But since Friday, my respect and affection for the guys has grown even though I didn't think that was possible...so yeah, it was amazing and moving, and I couldn't be happier to be a Rush fan - until the next time I'm happily proven wrong! :-)

Now to wait for the DVD to come in the mail, and for August and the Time Machine to roll around to SoCal!!
#94 - Posted 6/27/10 @9:04AM by bclay52 [contact]

DVR'd it and will watch it again today-

Very well done. All kinds of interesting stuff in there. I'm not as hardcore as some of you (I've read hundreds of interviews over the years, not all of them) but to hear them describe the COS tour, Permanent Waves, etc. Geddy was really high on Power Windows, found it fascinating he described it as the pinnacle of the synth\guitar\songwriting. Never knew Alex was so tweaked with the synth direction.

Who else had a good laugh at the descriptions of Geddys voice? God love him but you have to admit his voice is.. unique. "A cat being chased out the door with a blowtorch up its ass..".. laughed for 5 minutes.

Best thing in the whole movie was credits: the three of them sitting around a table, Alex and Geddy were obviously lit. :) Three old friends sitting around a table goofing off, perfect ending. Cut.
#95 - Posted 6/27/10 @9:09AM by bclay52 [contact]

Oh, and can't wait for their next concept album: Rush - The Life of Frankenstein.
#96 - Posted 6/27/10 @9:39AM by ladlenitz [contact]

It was cool seeing Neil talk so much for a change. And I finally get his aversion to media and fan contact, whereas before I always thought there was an element of arrogance to it. He is truly embarrassed by all the attention.

A little too much Billy Corgan for me, no big deal, but Jack Black added NOTHING to the film! Singing lyrics, mugging for the camera - he can be funny, but in this film he was just annoying.
#97 - Posted 6/27/10 @9:41AM by kevin [contact]

Watched it again this morning and what jumps out at me is how
well this Doc is put together. It really does take on the
personality of a journey and like a lot of Rush albums there
are multiple sections that become mentally interesting enough
just to watch those parts. It really does put a face on what a
lot of us have felt over the years but you just couldn't
explain it to non-believer.
#98 - Posted 6/27/10 @9:44AM by losingit2112 [contact]

#90, I think that's either a new song or from S&A... I don't think we're getting lucky enough for Everyday Glory.
#99 - Posted 6/27/10 @10:38AM by Rush Fan Since 1976 [contact]

#92-I was thinking the same thing about myself! I was the kid in HS that went around collecting money for tickets to the Rusah show(s) and staying at the box office overnight for best pick's of seats...
#94-I was surprised that my description (Mickey Mouse on Helium) was mentioned! But the "cat/blowtorch" was the best...
#97-"It really does put a face on what a
lot of us have felt over the years but you just couldn't
explain it to non-believer." YOU nailed it... and so did Sam and Scott...
Can't wait to grab a copy Tuesday...

So is anyone else removing themselves from any contact with the Rush world after the 29th? I think I'm going to avoid Rush.com and RIAB and all other possible news sources to stay away from setlists and stage setup all other tour goodies...
I'll leave a temporary goodbye post here, and make sure that I don't come back until after July 24th [the first show on the TM tour that I'm going to]

Well, enjoy the setlist [which I already know half of] and the tour photos. Until I see you again, goodbye my Rush friends.

someone posted that they didn't like the Jack Black stuff, listen to it again, it's Jack, but very honest, and very original way to describe what the music meant to him.

Loved Entre Nous myself and basically did the same thing to myparents with that song, although I wasn't as outcast'y' as he may have been and my parents were cool with Rush back then.

well, I'm totally stoked to see the boys, and hopefully I'll get to see some of y'all at the Columbus, Pitt and maybe Toronto shows

Why was a film crew at Alex's house when he was a teenager?
#103 - Posted 6/27/10 @11:55AM by Sub-Xanadu Man [contact]

102 - That wasn't actually Alex's house. It was like a farm house with a bunch of kids that someone got together with the idea of doing a "reality" type show in the early 70's.

It ended up appearing in the 1973 film called "Come on Children". Directed by Allan King.

"Why was a film crew at Alex's house when he was a teenager?"

Are you serious? This has been explained over and over and over again. Look up the movie "Come On Children", Alex was in it and that's where the video was taken from. They weren't at Alex's house.

I was thinking the same thing. I had 43 rush shirts when I was in high school and I wore one every day for my entire high school experience. I was the "Rush dude"! I am quite certain that all those lost friends think of me when they here or see anything Rush.

just watched this morning after having to dvr it last night...love it and can't wait for the stuff they cut out. only complaint is that i wanted more behind the scenes stuff but just being greedy i guess

interesting story (maybe) regarding my following neil on his bike into a gas station on his way to the july 4 show in atlantic city. i did not approach neil for obvious reasons and at the time my girlfriend told me "you should have just asked for a picture" after watching the movie, she said "that was a good idea not to approach him"

Watched it on Palladia in HD with Katskhane while DVR'ing it from VH-1 Classic. Glad I first got to see it on the Big Screen with full Volume - nothing else like it. Some of those sweeping shots over the Audience during some of their stadium shows were just breathtaking on big screen, and the power and clarity of their songs coming through the big speakers was almost concert level volume without the usual distortion from a live gig. We'll be getting the DVD in the mail soon, but even that will simply just be a memory touch point to seeing it a Mann's Chinese Theater #1.

Funny story .I like the part about your girlfriend watching the documntary ,then syaing "yeah that was a good idea not to approach him".haha.
It almost sounds like you're talking about an animal out in the wild...."shhh, it's a Neil Peart..don't scare it away"

I still havent watched the documentary yet. I dont get VH1 here and will be buying the DVD when it comes out this week.
Just a comment about it, even though I havent seen it yet. Ive been hearing about all of the fellow "stars" who appear in the film and it just occured to me, there are some others who I am surprised wouldn't be in it. People like Gord Downie (Tragically Hip) or members of Pearl Jam, Audioslave, Soundgarden, Trailer park boys, Kim Mitchell,Vertical Horizon (Neil's drummer buddy), Nicolas Cage (him and Neil are friends, right?) , etc etc.
Maybe a few of them are in the film, but just havent been mentioned, I dont know. Personally, I could do without Sebastien Bach . Seems like he really "digs" Rush, but he's a little stuck in that 80's big hair band thing.
Anyway, I am still really looking forward to watching the DVD this week.
#114 - Posted 6/27/10 @12:47PM by Analogmoon [contact]

I actually have that issue of Circus magazine that has the review of the album in it - "one boot".

Also - I have the first album on cassette, I think I got it around 1980. Working Man cuts off - and for a long time I thought that was how the song ended.

After watching it this morning, DVR'd from Palladia and in HD, my wife now wants a girls' RUSH shirt. :) She's always wearing my original Permament Waves shirt and it looks great on her. Looking forward to the BluRay version.

It's funny I relived my entire 1978 - 1982 high school days, musically speaking, through this documentary. What a great tribute to one fantastic band - the greatest ever in my humble opinion. :) I love a lot of music but RUSH will always be numero uno.

I would like to have seen more Sebastian Bach and Les Claypool, and not so much Jack Black.
#117 - Posted 6/27/10 @12:52PM by Alexfan [contact]

Me - not a Sebastien Bach fan either. He makes me cringe rather uncomfortably in the film, and in the after screening party videos.
#118 - Posted 6/27/10 @12:55PM by Analogmoon [contact]

I wonder if The Trailer Park boys will show up in the extras?

Sebastian cracks me up. The dude has passion.
#119 - Posted 6/27/10 @1:01PM by Sub-Xanadu Man [contact]

Sebastian was great to me. A true passionate Rush fan.

I actually could have done without Tim Commerford's comments. Jack Black didn't bother me. I think he was only on there 3 times or so.

Billy Corgan was definitely the most eloquent to me and his comments touched me the most. Especially the story about his mom and Entre Nous.
#120 - Posted 6/27/10 @1:07PM by KenNJ [contact]

good analogy random. to this day i still go back and forth between regretting not saying hello and being glad i respected his privacy. as a fellow rider, part of the reason i kept my distance was that i figured after riding 100-200 miles? i would not be in a social mood even if my name wasn't neil peart. i am convinced that i earned some good karma that day and i will be rewarded by running into ged or alex in the future neither of who i will not hesitate to bother!

When my son saw Sebastian Bach he asked, "Is that a guy or a girl?"
#122 - Posted 6/27/10 @1:13PM by Vyan [contact]

"Seems like he really "digs" Rush, but he's a little stuck in that 80's big hair band thing."

Don't you DARE!

There is no law saying you have to conform to what anybody else thinks you should be doing, didn't you pay any attention to 2112 or Rush? That's like saying Hard Rockers in the 70's only cared about their hair. Or Van Halen only cared about their Hair. Sebastian has his issues, Lord knows, but he's one HELL of a singer and Skid Row was not some "silly little hair band". Some of the best musicians especially singers and guitarists, besides Rush, the world has ever seen came out of those bands, from Steve Vai, Yngwie, Nuno Bettencourt to George Lynch.

Also have you Seen Geddy's hair lately?

Sebastian is like THE Rush fan of the ages, and further he's one of the few Canadian musicians in the film. I could go on a tear about Billy Corgan's horrible voice, and how he was too much of a selfish egomaniacal jerk for even Sharon Osborne to handle - blah blah blah - but he gave a great speech at the Ceremony (which also explained why he wound up singing when he didn't even want to) so I'm going to refrain from my usual "Rat gargling razor blades" refrences for him. He Rocks. So does Bas.
#123 - Posted 6/27/10 @1:20PM by Analogmoon [contact]

I still have long hair - what is left of it. ha ha

I will get to see the band for the first time this summer at
Saratoga.

Speaking of gas stations, in one of Neil's posts on his website a few years ago, there were photos of him at a gas station in my home town.

I respect you for not approaching Neil. Might be tempting to some, but I know personally I probably wouldn't either. Just seeing him out in public somewhere ,like you did, is pretty cool in itself.

#122-
Yes, I "dare", sorry. That's just how I feel when I see the guy. I didn't say, though, that I think he seems like a nice guy. I didn't mean to be all superficial about looks or whatever. It's mainly his whole 80's rock look, its a bit "dated". But anyway, that's superficial I know. He seems like a nice guy.

-It's mainly his whole 80's rock look, its a bit "dated". But anyway, that's superficial I know. He seems like a nice guy.

I get you. He does have his issues, but I just think judging him by his hair is patently ridiculous. I don't agree with the "dated" thing, I think that's hype and never accepted it - not during the grunge era, not during the 00's, not now. Nobody said the Beetles were a "hair band", but they were. I could go on for sometime about that, but actually what I ment to post was not that anything about Bas, but the fact that I just got into a tweet war with Rolling Stone reporter Toure over Rush.

He said this:

@ToureX Thriller on Fuse now.

and because the anniversay of Michael passing was the same day as the Rush Star Ceremony, and the fact that their were reporters camped out on Michael's Star at 6am, but I *still* haven't seen any TV coverage of the Rush star - I said this...

@Vyan1 Rush in Rush on Vh-1 Classic in an Hour @ToureX Thriller on Fuse now.

Beleive it or not he came back with this...

@ToureX New button: ((((So What?)))) RT @Vyan1: Rush in Rush on Vh-1 Classic

So What!!!!!

But then I remembered....

Oh wait, I forgot you work for the Enemy - Rolling Stone @ToureX New button: ((((So What?))))

Wenner's been sand-bagging Rush from Rock Hall of Fame for Years, Deep Purple too. That's one "what" @Tourex New button: ((((So What?))))

Wenner's been sand-bagging Rush from Rock Hall of Fame for Years, Deep Purple too. That's one "what" @Tourex New button: ((((So What?))))

Also got him going with a dig about MIchael...

@Vyan1 Still amazing to me to see so many others jump on the MJ bandwagon, fueled 20% by musical genius and 80% by hype. @tourex

That got a reaction:

@Tourex Wow. RT @Vyan1: Still amazing to me to see so many others jump on the MJ bandwagon, fueled 20% by musical genius and 80% by hype.

I then gave him a lecture on how Thriller languished on the charts for nearly a year before Michael did the Moonwalk on Motown 25. Record didn't change - Hype changed. After that even a throwaway song like "Human Nature" by Steve Porcaro of Nature could become a hit an make Steve a millionare. (Which he wasn't before that)

anyhoo - just thought you should know Rolling Stone still sucks.
#126 - Posted 6/27/10 @1:57PM by Vyan [contact]

Sorry Typo. Steve Porcaro of Toto wrote "Human Nature"- anyway back to Rush...
#127 - Posted 6/27/10 @2:53PM by Analogmoon [contact]

Who was it that said something about critics not buying albums, but rather, people buy them?

I never had to defend the band when I was young, as most people I knew liked Rush. It seems that now at the age of 44, I have to do so from time to time.
#128 - Posted 6/27/10 @4:10PM by Alexfan [contact]

Sebastien Bach looks like he just crawled out of "the smoke hole" at high school. Some people just don't know how to age.

He's one of them.

I appreciate that he's a big fan, but he just kind of felt out of place to me. I can't explain it. I'm sure he's a nice guy etc. but he just seems a little like he is hanging on, looking in the rearview mirror a lot.

I think that Scott and Sam could have found dozens more musicians to praise the influence Rush had on them, but they picked who they picked, and that's that.

Although I know it may not happen on this tour, I hope to someday see the band do the 2112 Overture live. I am looking forward to the show, as I have wanted to see the band for a very long time.

#134 - Posted 6/27/10 @5:52PM by random_sample [contact]

#128- Not to dwell on the Sebastien Bach thing, but you nailed it .Thats what I think about the guy ,too. It's not even that I dislike him, he just seems to be hanging on to the past (including the way he looks, dresses, etc). oh well.

As far as the people interviewed in the documentary, Im sure it will be awesome anyway and Im looking forward to watching it this week, but I always wondered if there are other famous Rush admirers (that we dont know about) or even that it would be interesting to hear what someone like David Gilmour, or Charlie Watts, Mick Jagger, Robert Plant or many others from bands Rush have mentioned or paid tribute to or said they were influenced by. I mean most of these high profile Rock bands or actors ,etc have to be aware of Rush and some of them must admire them. Personally, I'd find it really intersting hearing some different perspectives ,from them.

#136 - Posted 6/27/10 @6:15PM by kevin [contact]

What a great film. Objectively it just flows so well, I mean my wife watched it and got it. The Banger guys pulled off a project of a lifetime. The way they handled Neils Tragedy was so on the money, you couldn't helped but be moved but it wasn't pandering of sympathy it was just so honest and so well done. I hope we all realize the moment and what this band is doing. Name 1 band that reached their peak after 40 years? We can debate musically if the are at their peak but without question they are rolling and are probably more popular then ever. Matt Stone had my favorite quote, I'm paraphrasing

Rush's music made it O.K. to be smart and associate Rock music with something other than girls and partying..
#137 - Posted 6/27/10 @6:45PM by Sub-Xanadu Man [contact]

#134- Totally understand where you are coming from and it would be interesting to hear from some of those people however I think it's important to note that other than Gene Simmons, who was friendly with the band because of touring with them, all of the artists were younger because this film was from a purely fan perspective.

Now I'd be as curious as anyone to hear what many of their "contemporaries" think of Rush, but at the end of the day I could care less, and for the film I'm much happier hearing from true Rush fans, which is what we got.
#138 - Posted 6/27/10 @6:57PM by random_sample [contact]

#137-
There are all sorts of ways to look at the documentary or what "could have" or "should have" been in it, etc.etc.
I am definitely looking forward to watching the whole thing this week. I had a sneak preview of it last year ,when Sam and Scot were in my city as part of a film festival and they showed a 5 minute clip of the documentary ,before they had finished it. They had said no one else had seen the clip yet, so it was pretty exciting to see it.
As far as your comment about the "fan perspective", from all of the reports and most of the comments ,even from Sam and Scot ,the film makers..it is a film that is meant not ONLY for Rush fans, so I was just saying it would be interesting to hear /see some famous people that maybe are in the music business or even film and what they might have to say about Rush. Nicolas Cage for example, who I read Neil became friends with. I think it would be very cool to hear him speak about Rush (I guess he is a fan/ admirer). Anyway, they did a great job on the documentary I am sure and I can't wait to watch it this week.

So why no classic albums?
#140 - Posted 6/27/10 @7:04PM by Sub-Xanadu Man [contact]

#138- True. By the way, I didn't mean that the film was MADE ONLY for fans, I just meant that it seemed their focus, in terms of interviews, was to hear from artists who were influenced or longtime fans of the band.

Sebastian Back isn't holding on to the past he's just a purest when it comes to Rock and Roll, that' how a Rocker dresses and sometimes act's like a Rocker. It's like belonging to a society or culture, for instance Biker's dress and act a certain way as do Punks, Skinheads, Altrna-dorks, Emo kid's all have a status Que to live up to.

Even Progressive Rock bands have certain characteristic's they share, more musically then fashionably but I would say more on demeanor. Dated or not...it gets' rehashed and shaken up and modified, for better or worse...like Nirvana for example they dressed like the Ramones from the waist down and from the pelvis up they looked like they went to community college...then that became the status for the next ten years along with piercing your face into oblivion and listening to Industrial Music or Metal that was disgised as industrial or vise versa...that was the 90's.

When Emo was commercialized and packaged in the 2000's that's what the young kid's are doing today but it's all relative, it's all Rock and Roll and it's going to be here before and after...so just enjoy.

Great documentary, but too many commericals; I thought I was going to cry! Seems like it was 5 minutes of Rush followed by 5 minutes of commericals.

Makes me want to see them even more in concert!

One thing that I didn't know is that they asked John Rutsy to leave; I always thought he was the one that left the band. Wow that must have been really hard on him especially after they made it big.

#17 First of all what in the hell are you doing with a Rolling Rag subscription..Just Kidding. It wouldn't surprise me, like Matt Stone says if you can't give it up for Rush now you're just being an old dickhead...

Rolling Stone's critics have always been dickheads. It will be vaguely interesting to see how they spin 3 decades of negativity now that Rush has outlasted most of their critics. Just like they trashed Led Zeppelin for most of their career and pretty much denied it 20 years later.
#150 - Posted 6/27/10 @8:21PM by Leela88

An amazing film!! F the R n R HOF!! I say they refuse if they get the offer. Marginalize it...beginning with RUSH!! Highlights from the doc include the interviews with the diehard fans (like me!!) Also very gratifying to see the friendship and shared vision of these masters of their craft. It was great to see the old footage and hear about the formation of this truly iconic and legandary band. We're so lucky to still have Rush around when you consider what Neil went through and how it potentially impacted the future of the band. Can't wait for the new tour and seeing Moving Pictures live!!

Gotta agree totally, He's just being himself - it would be a lie and pandering for him to try and be any different. Plus his "past" musically is a lot better than the present.

For those of us who feel as though we know them - like KNOW THEM - we appreciate the movie for what it shared. We all probably also feel that it didn't share enough - and we understand that.

I have my own "six degrees of separation" connection to them, and was fortunate enough to meet them backstage years ago, but before that I air drummed, strummed and grew up listening to their music. They kind of helped to guide me, helped me to find a place that was special - a kind of "Tom Sawyer" fuck the world attitude that helped me then and to this day, kind of defines who I am.

The documentary doesn't disappoint. It is a deep drink and it is probably the best Kool Aid I've had for a while, but for those of us who hold them so near and dear, it will ultimately just make them more near and dear, and will leave us thirsting for even more.

I'm not fanatical about much. I bought a model rocket kit this weekend for my two young girls, and we had a blast, but the passion I feel for Rush is almost carnal in nature. I enjoy the Leafs, but again, nothing strikes a resonance with me like Rush. I feel I can only say it here - and people would understand.

I've gleaned things through my connections - being from St. Catharines, and knowing some of Neil's friends, and just from meeting those that are regulars at the Orbit Room - Alex's bar - and the tidbits I get are things that help to define them as everyday normal people, and at the same time, I can't help but hold them on a larger-than-life pedastal. They wrote the music that bonded so many levels of influence on me. I think my connection is that through some weird sort of inherent feeling of connection - I think that I've experienced so much of the same as them, and that an understanding is there - below the surface - me of them, and them of me (at least it would be apparent if we ever actually met) and that is what makes so many of their lyrics relevant, and what binds their magnificent playing to the theme.

Wow - this is the stuff that Neil's nightmares are made of, but I can't help but try to define or understand what brings us all to a place like this. A fansite full of devoted fans is one thing - this I feel - is quite another - what would they be saying on the Van Halen site????

Okay - enough from me, sorry - Sleeman's Cream Ale was on sale, and I'm spilling.

Cheers.

There's too many emotions and feelings I have about this band to describe here, because of what they mean to me personally. They were the right band at the right time for me in my life back in '80 or '81 or so whenever someone at high school turned me on to them. And the song Subdivisions and the accompanying video, as the doc portrays so well, resonated with me to the core...it was exactly me, and still is to some degree.

After I saw the documentary in Tulsa, OK, on a brief family vacation of sorts, and seeing it again over the weekend, my love of the band has only gotten that much wider (much like my skies are...) And two big things came out of the documentary for me:

1) I remembered all those feelings I used to have playing electric guitar and learning parts to their songs, and loving that feeling when you know you've got it right, and in the case of La Villa...sometimes you get parts of that song, only to realize you've got about 6-7 more minutes to go! Heh heh So, I've been so immersed in acoustic music for so long now...but this past week I just treated myself to the first electric guitar I've had in over 20 years. :)
2) I feel completely justified to spend my money to buy any products related to the band, whether expensive concert tickets, or a new t-shirt, or a bobblehead, or whatever. I've never felt any guilt at all about this band, but I just feel completely justified now....because they've earned and deserved EVERY PENNY they make. It's so obvious to me after the documentary. If no one can see this film and not come away with how honest and geniune and hardworking these guys are....and by that, what makes them so unique in the music world is that they truly are what you would want your 'rock heroes' to be...the 'good guys'.

Speaking of Sebastian Bach, I thought it was kind of humorous that he related 2112 to Ayn Rand's book "The Fountainhead".

Er, Sebastian, you read the wrong book. 2112 was influenced by "Anthem", also written by Ayn Rand. (as well as the song "Anthem" itself, of course).

#155 - New material?

Yes, and covers as well as Skid Row songs too. He just finished a swing through South America with Guns N Roses.

Love the work that these directors have produced, especially this film as a RUSH fan since 1980.

And besides the breast tape commercials already mentioned, the other one I noticed on Palladia while fast-forwarding through that proves the folks at MTV are completely out of touch was an ad for the Time-Life RnR Hall of Fame video. Are you f*cking kidding me? A RnR HoF video ad during the RUSH documentary? F*ck you, MTV.

From the NYT review: "It probably won't reveal anything new to the band's many fanatical followers ... "

Well, I have to admit that after so many years of thinking there was at least a component of arrogance to Neil's media- and fan-shy ways, I finally get it. As he said, he's truly embarrassed and confused by the adulation, and it makes him extremely uncomfortable. It's not that I thought he didn't appreciate Rush fans, as all three of the boys have always made their respect for their fans very clear, but it seemed like he wanted to play a show and then disappear. Well, turns out that's true - but he couldn't have a better or more sincere reason for it.

He's a tremendous and intense player. What more do people want out of the guy?

I'm surprised there is no mention of the highlight of the film (for me). That song they're playing at the school w/ Rutsey that I've never heard before. I don't know if anyone else noticed, but it's not Best I Can, though they may have called it that at the time.

I'm hoping the whole song is on the bonus disc.
