Rush documentary to premier April 24th at Tribeca Film Festival
Posted at 7:18AM | comments (45)

UPDATE - 3/15@11:45AM: The documentary was just announced as one of the 14 films in the TFF '10: Encounters section. Here's the description:

RUSH: The Documentary
Directed by Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn
(Canada)-World Premiere
For fans and newcomers to the legendary Canadian band Rush, this is the music documentary to experience. Directors Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn embark on a comprehensive exploration of this extraordinary power trio, from their early days in Toronto through each of their landmark albums to the present day. Sit back and revel in the words, music, and wonder of Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart.

The complete schedule with showtimes should be released later today.

----- snip -----

UPDATE - 3/12@10:02AM: Power Windows is now reporting that the dvd release has been delayed at least 2 weeks and that an official announcement will come in the next couple of days. No surprise there! I expect that they'll announce this on Monday when the full list of films at Tribeca are announced.

UPDATE - 3/12@7:52AM: It seems that the the filmmakers are having a little fun at our expense. They posted the following to the Banger Films blog this morning:

Rush: The Documentary Exclusive World Premiere

Breaking News! There is a lot of chatter circulating around the premiere of the new documentary from producers Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn. Well you heard it here first! "Rush: The Biggest Secret in Music" is to have its Global Premiere on May 18th at the Siberian Music and Film Festival 2010. The city of Khanty-Mansiisk will transform into a hub of documentary film virtuosity as the Sprit of Fire film competition enters its 8th year in production.

Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen are speechless with excitement over finally breaching the news and state that the band will of course, be in attendance to launch their film with the Banger Films crew.

Early April Fool's joke? Or maybe they're just a little piqued at all the internet rumors floating around. Either way, there is no such thing as the Siberian Music and Film Festival. And even if there was, do you really think that they'd premier the movie in Khanty-Mansiisk... in Siberia, Russia ... and all 3 members of Rush would show up? Thanks to jackrelax for the heads up. (edit: there is a Spirit of Fire film festival in this city, but it ended on March 3rd.)

----- snip -----

UPDATE - 3/11@9:29AM: I should note that the Tribeca Film Festival website revealed a partial list of the film schedule yesterday which did not include the Rush documentary, but the full list will not be revealed until this coming Monday, March 15th. This leads me to believe that our big tour/documentary announcement will be on Monday.

In late January we received confirmation via a post to the official Banger Films Facebook page that the long-anticipated Rush documentary had finally been completed and would be released this Spring. Then about a month ago we heard via TNMS member Oz that the theatrical premier would occur at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. And Power Windows reported a couple of weeks ago that Rounder films has a tentative release date of May 18th. I can now confirm via an inside source that the documentary will indeed receive a red carpet premier at the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday, April 24th and that all 3 members of Rush will be on hand. Apparently the band have been busily involved with finalizing the film for the festival and this is part of the reason for the tour announcement delay. It sounds like they plan on announcing the tour and the documentary release all in one fell swoop - most likely early next week.

#4 - Posted 3/11/10 @7:53AM by Alexfan [contact]

I'm very excited about the documentary. So much of the same old stuff gets recycled - it will be great to see new pics, new footage, new STUFF.

What to be more excited about? Documentary? Tour? Album?
#5 - Posted 3/11/10 @8:08AM by RUSHGIRL [contact]

That would be an awesome premier to attend!! Can't wait to see this DVD!!!!!!!!

Wow, the boys have sure been keeping busy this year! It's nice that they were involved with the final cut of the video, and it was worth the delayed tour announcement.

So much RUSH news, so little time...
#7 - Posted 3/11/10 @8:23AM by LanceTheShred [contact]

RUSHGIRL is stoked cuz she's in the DOC!! You gotta be a REAL hardcore rat to be included in this piece. Footage of Donna Halper as well!

We are not worthy.......A bunch o lil gerbil preemies ;)
#8 - Posted 3/11/10 @8:25AM by rocinante5m [contact]

I think there will be many people amazed, and maybe disappointed when they watch a "Rock Doc" that doesn't include multiple arrests, stints of rehab, reality show highlights, bar room brawls, multiple marriages and line-up changes..........this is going to be something special
#9 - Posted 3/11/10 @8:26AM by rocinante5m [contact]

What up Lance??? get to work dude, you got bills to pay brother!!!!
#10 - Posted 3/11/10 @8:32AM by chutch15 [contact]

Great news!

#7 Lance my friend, I was interviewed, but time will tell whether I made the cut or not. I am pretty sure I sounded like a complete knob, so I may have hit the cutting room floor. In it or not, I am VERY excited to see hidden footage and no matter what Sam Dunn is a documentarist (is that a word) extroardinaire!!!!!!!!!!!

RUSH on everyone!!!!!!!

I set up a FB group for the premier:

WOOHOO!!! all three members of Rush will be on hand!!!

another piece of the puzzle, perhaps...
#16 - Posted 3/11/10 @9:50AM by LanceTheShred [contact]

#9 Bills to pay indeed Roc! And plenty of sneaky wife money for multiple 2010 pellets baby. Let em flow!

#11 RUSHGIRL-Knowing your dedication to this band, I would be extremely surprised if you didn't get the cameo.
***Double fingers crossed*** :)))>

#12 Simon Man-Good call on the Facebook page. It all depends on timing with me. I was also contemplating a cruz to Mass to see Lotus Land that night as well.
#17 - Posted 3/11/10 @11:28AM by State of Grace [contact]

Should be an amazing documentary - very exciting! So curious to see how it turns out.

RUSHGIRL - I agree with Lance... I would be very surprised if you hit the cutting room floor! I'm sure you did much better than you think!

This event could potentially turn into a superb ROADTRIP!!!

RUSH ON...
#18 - Posted 3/11/10 @11:50AM by Agent Rush.v2 [contact]

Did someone say road trip???? Lance?

I may be down for that brother

#20 - Posted 3/11/10 @12:40PM by craig [contact]

hmm, Rush IS a band... so then, it should be: the band HAS BEEN busy- with the band being singular. If "Rush ARE a band", then the "Apparently the band have been busy" would be describing a plural. If RUSH IS A BAND, then they are ONE band. Right? They is, you be, I am be doing, it's all very simple stuff.

Just switch the word "band' with "audience". See?

yeah, ooooh yeah!
#22 - Posted 3/11/10 @1:38PM by Diego [contact]

While I'm sure there are numerous opinions on a set list, is there any song(s) that MUST be played at a Rush concert?

I've made every show in the Chicago area since the Hold Your Fire tour and I believe the only two songs that have always been played are Tom Sawyer and Spirit/Radio. They might have tweaked the set list at other venues, I think the Power Windows site mentioned Spirit was dropped for a short stint on one tour? I could be wrong on that though.

I guess if they are playing for 3 hours they should include the old favorites but if they released a new album and opted for a shorter set list, what, if anything MUST be played?

I say nothing but that is just my opinion.
#23 - Posted 3/11/10 @1:57PM by katskahnne [contact]

So is this it, or will they have a West Coast premiere as well (pretty please) or will there just be a broad theatrical short-term release between Tribeca and the DVD release, or what?

Gah.
#24 - Posted 3/11/10 @2:00PM by marty from clayton

#22 - Interesting question. For the record, only "Tom Sawyer", "Dreamline", and "One Little Victory" have been played on every leg of every tour since each was released (I'm not counting Snakes & Arrows stuff).
"Spirit of Radio" was missing from the first leg of Presto tour, but then was included later. Otherwise, it too would have been at every show since its inception.

Having seen Rush every year since Signals Tour, I for one wouldn't miss Tom Sawyer, but would desperately miss Spirit - it's such a great high-point live. But, Tom will probably be back because there are new fans each tour, and they should get to see it live too.
#25 - Posted 3/11/10 @2:10PM by snowdog2113 [contact]

I'm really excited by this but at the same time I know I'll enjoy it because I think I'm keeping my expectations realistic. For some reason I feel uneasy about what the reaction of some of the fans is going to be. Not that I have any more info about it than anyone else but it just seems like people are expecting to see more than they're going to get. The 2-3 minute footage of them playing with John Rutsey alone will make the thing worth it to me but I'll be shocked if there's any other performance footage that hasn't been seen before. I've got Sam Dunn's Heavy Metal and Iron Maiden docs and I like them a lot but being the metal head that he is (nothing wrong with that) I think we're gonna see a huge focus of other artists talking about how cool they thought long-haired era Rush was when they were growing up followed by a skip over everything between 1981 and the most recent S&A tour just so they can finish with "And Rush is still rocking...blah blah blah" with footage of them playing Circumstances or something.

No matter how good it is they're just going to have to leave out a ton to cram over 40 years into an 1:42. I find it hard to believe it'll be much better than MuchMusic's "The Story of Rush" that was almost an hour long. That was full of rare footage and rare/new interview clips. I just think there's going to be a ton of people saying "What the hell? They didn't even ask them about "X", or "They never even talked about album "Y", or "How come they didn't show any footage of the "Z" tour?"

We'll see. I just think people are expecting too much. Maybe I'm wrong.
#26 - Posted 3/11/10 @2:52PM by TheHonestMan [contact]

Woah RUSHGIRL, congrats on being interviewed for documentary. I'm sure you made it in the final version. How did the whole thing get set up? If they contacted you about being in it, I would bet it's a sure thing that they'll include the interview.

#25, snowdog2113 - The simple fact that there is just a film being made about RUSH's career get's me pumped. The only thing I'm expecting is a brief overview, with more focus on major hits and turning points, and maybe a few facts that I didn't know before. Whatever is included, I'm just happy someone cared enough to make it.
#27 - Posted 3/11/10 @3:01PM by SpaceTrucker [contact]

Awesome news, can't wait for the big announcement. RUSH documentary, tour and probably some new material, HAT TRICK! On a different subject I posted a really cool interview with Niklas Stalvind of the Swedish Metal band WOLF on Rockchoice.com link he had some cool things to say.
#28 - Posted 3/11/10 @3:45PM by ReGorLaTroy [contact]

Fantastic...something else, Rush related, to look forward to, indeed!

I will definitely try to make this, as I live just a few miles across the river in New Jersey.

Let's keep each other posted and perhaps do a pre-screening get together in the city.

Very excited for you RushGirl...a trip down from upstate for you then?

Enjoy the rest of your day everyone!

#24, thanks for mentioning Dreamline. Victory is not really old enough to have endured many set list changes but Dreamline is and I didn't realize that it has been played every time, even during a few short set list tours - ones with an opening act.

I agree Spirit is a great live song, lots of energy. Dreamline is too and perhaps the band thinks it a good touring song on a personal level: 'We're only at home when we're on the run..."

#29.....Maybe they are just trying to get their money's worth out of the green lasers. :-)

Wait...holy cow...it's in NYC!!! Practically in my backyard...and I have a good friend that works in the city who is a big Rush fan. I wonder if he has connections and could get me a ticket for this...OMG, that would be sweet!!! Even if I can't get a ticket I might just have to hang out for the red carpet thingy....SH*T...I'm there anyways!!!! Yeah, baby...now I'm stoked!!!
#32 - Posted 3/11/10 @8:19PM by glortiz [contact]

...and the news keeps getting better and better. I would love to be there at the opening, but will be patient for the DVD release and of course, the dates!

Rush On~
#33 - Posted 3/11/10 @9:16PM by cagster [contact]

#22 I feel Spirit of the Radio and Temples of Syrinx should always be played because those songs always bring so much energy to the crowd. I also agree with #24 that SOR always sound awesome live.
#34 - Posted 3/11/10 @9:19PM by cagster [contact]

Sorry foul, The Spirit of Radio, must do time in the rat trap.

Hope the documentary comes out well.
Keep up the good work guys!

jackrelax... methinks the Banger Films guys are having a little fun at our expense- maybe an early April Fool's joke? Since there is no such thing as the "Siberian Music and Film Festival 2010". Khanty-Mansiisk is in the middle of Siberia.. in Russia. link :)
#39 - Posted 3/12/10 @8:51AM by RUSHGIRL [contact]

#26 - there was a pre-screen of questions sent out before RUSHcon last year. You answered some questions and if they wanted to talk to you on camera, they would contact you. I was contacted and an interview set up at RUSHcon. Lots of people were interviewed, so IF I make it, I will feel VERY lucky!
No matter what this documentary will be STELLAR I am sure!!!

I'm trying to book a flight to Siberia... It ain't easy... :)

it does exist:

#43 - Posted 3/12/10 @10:51AM by rushisaband [contact]

#42 - Aha! I stand corrected. Not sure why they referred to it as the "Siberian Film Festival" though. While it might be shown there, I doubt that it will premier there. And I especially doubt that Rush would fly to Siberia to make an appearance! Stranger things have happened though. We'll see I guess.
#44 - Posted 3/12/10 @10:54AM by rushisaband [contact]

Actually ... the "Spirit of Fire" film festival already ended. It ran from Feb. 26 to Mar. 3. link
#45 - Posted 3/12/10 @12:37PM by jackrelax [contact]

Yeah, I don't know why they would release a fake press release. Doesn't seem like that would be a wise move? Some times segments of films festivals extend past the main festival run. Who knows. Like you said, stranger things have happened.
