Posted at 5:37PM | comments (35)

UPDATE - 3/19@6:14PM: Tickets are now available for the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame 6th Annual Gala where Rush will be honored on Sunday, March 28th at the George Weston Recital Hall, Toronto Centre for the Arts. You can purchase tickets via ticketmaster at this link. There is a special offer for Rush fans; simply enter the pass code SONGS when requesting tickets. It looks like regular tickets start from $140.50 CND, but with the special offer they are $100.50 CND.

UPDATE - 3/10@12:22PM: I added this video of the announcement of the inductees from back in January to the bottom of the post (thanks random_sample).

UPDATE - 3/10@10:25AM: The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame website indicates that Alexisonfire will perform Tom Sawyer while the press release states (thanks RushFanForever) that they'll be performing Closer to the Heart.

A couple of months ago it was announced that Rush along with Quebec musician Robert Charlebois would be the 2010 songwriter inductees into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. Rush will be recognized for their songs Limelight, Closer to the Heart, The Spirit of Radio, Tom Sawyer and Subdivisions. The 2010 inductees will be honored at the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame 6th annual Gala on Sunday, March 28th at the George Weston Recital Hall, Toronto Centre for the Arts. The performers for the gala were announced this afternoon and will include Canadian hardcore rockers Alexisonfire performing Tom Sawyer; Primus frontman Les Claypool playing a version of The Spirit of Radio; and Canadian folk singer/songwriter Jacob Moon doing his rendition of Subdivisions. Thanks to Brad Hirsch of Used Bin Radio for the heads up.

FIRST!

Alex is the most under-rated guitarist out there.

Oh hello there world...

I'd like to see them honoured for 'Alien Shore'. A great song in my opinion.

Rad! Any chance of it being televised, or put in some form eventually viewable by us down here in "Baja Canada"? :-D

I love Alien Shore too. My fave on Counterparts.

Would love to see them add it to the setlist!

Should be interesting to hear each bands rendition of those songs.

My son is going to see Alexisonfire in concert this month.

What a year 2010 is shaping up to be for RUSH and it's great to see!

PEACE...

Alien Shore would be sweet. Between Sun and Moon or Cold Fire would be even sweeter.

Cool news, although i do think it's a shame that the songs chosen were chosen solely for popularity. You'd think the Songwriters Hall of Fame would either take in the scope of their entire music catalog, or actually recognize some of the more cleverly constructed songs, not knocking any of those mentioned, but there's plenty more tunes full of subtle intricacies that would apply better for this sort of award. If it were for a Grammy or something i could understand, but then again what is any contest but a popularity contest?
#9 - Posted 3/9/10 @9:20PM by JohnnyTRacer [contact]

Surprised to see Les Claypool in there! That should be a great rendition of The Spirit of Radio indeed! He just plain rocks! Jacob Moon's rendition of Subdivisions was beautiful, so I put it on my Myspace page. I would love to see this honor on TV! March 28th is the day before Rush will release the tour dates.........DOOOOHHH.....Just playing. Looking forward to soon being able to:

RUSH ON!

I checked out the website of the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, and these are the guidelines used to choose songs for induction :1) Having entered into popular culture and been sustained through oral tradition for a significant period of time; 2) Having achieved substantial regional, national and/or international status whether culturally, commercially and/or socially; 3) Having recorded a historical event or helped to define an era of popular culture; 4) Having created or helped to create a genre of music.

I'm Canadian, and I believe the songs were well-chosen and fit the guidelines. I agree that Rush has written and recorded a lot of other fantastic songs, but they are not as well-known in Canadian culture by non-Rush fans.

As far as the gala being televised, I'm not so sure it will be. I've never seen it in the past, but I could be mistaken. Any Canadians out there know if it's going to be televised?

I...LIKE...THIS NEWS!
This means way more to me than the Rock and roll hall of crap. I mean that sincerely. No sour grapes, there at all.
I hope there is video of this, later.
#15 - Posted 3/10/10 @12:42AM by random_sample [contact]

and #12-
I agree with you. Based on their criteria, I think those songs were well chosen. There are lots of more "obscure" Rush songs that are faves of mine...like Available light, Ghost rider, Vital signs, Analog kid, Between the wheels, etc etc etc... but they have criteria they base their song selections on.

#9 JTR-Les Claypool is my second favorite bassist of all time. Dude registers on the Richter Scale rippin that Carl Thompson Scroll.

#12 Get up and go the distance-(Long handle eh?)Great analysis and totally agree.

Liver-Alien Shore!! "Men about Oars"

Geddy Girl-Good god! Where the hell have you been?? Good to see you....:)>

Wooo Hooo!!!!!!!!!!! I am going to this gala and can't wait to see these performances!
Les Claypool??????? How cool is THAT??????????
#18 - Posted 3/10/10 @8:57AM by random_sample [contact]

#17- Thats cool you are going to it!
I think the it's really cool that Alexisonfire,Les Claypool and Jacob Moon are going to be paying tribute to Rush. I like all of them. Jacob Moon ,I just became aware of when I saw his version of Subdivisions and was impressed by it. Les Claypool is a surprise, since I hadn't seen/heard anything about him in a while. Wish I was going to this!
#19 - Posted 3/10/10 @10:14AM by hermy [contact]

Happy to see Subdivisions getting a nod. My personal favorite in the entire Rush catalog. That song plays live so well!!

If I introduce people to Rush, thats the song I play. It's not their longest or shortest song. It's just "catchy" enough for main stream folk. It has Geddy workin' it out on the keyboards, bass and vocals. Neil is busy from start to finish. Alex gets some solo time in and I think it's some of Neil's best lyrics.

If anyone isn't quite awake this morning go to iTunes and search Subdivisions. Play the 30 second snippet from Hostile Intent. That's a double-shot of expresso you didn't see coming.
#20 - Posted 3/10/10 @10:21AM by RushFanForever [contact]

It says in the Newswire press release article for this event, that Alexisonfire is doing 'Closer To The Heart'. I wonder if they will officially be doing this song, along with 'Tom Sawyer'.

So does this mean that the Tragically Hip are doing Limelight, just like at the 1994 Juno Award Hall Of Fame induction ceremony for Rush?

Happy Birthday 2112!!!!!!
#22 - Posted 3/10/10 @11:19AM by subdivincent [contact]

great that Leslie is showing up - On one of Primus' live dvds, right before they go out on stage, Les points to his headstock ( autographed by Ged ), and says "See this? Geddy Lee. I ain't f%ckin' around".

Great to hear that my namesake song is getting played. That song is still badass.

#16 Yes, I have a long handle, but it's one my favourite phrases from one of my favourite Rush songs. I couldn't come up with a shorter one. One of the things that first attracted me to Rush was the great rhyming in Neil's lyrics. "It takes a little more persistence to get up and go the distance!" - I love that line.

I'm fairly new to this board, but I enjoy checking it regularly and connecting with Rush fans.

Les Claypool......Very Cool Indeed! Thanks Ed!
(His version of Pink Floyd Dogs is incredible)

#19 Hey Hermy, a fellow WI Rush fan ...
Yo, that's a cutting version of Subdivisions. Might pass on downloading it... :)

#16 LanceTheShred.....You are my Brother from another mother concerning our musical tastes!

RUSH ON!

#26. You weren't impressed huh? :-)
#29 - Posted 3/11/10 @2:01AM by Rocinante [contact]

I am a Rush fan, really I am. I just can't seem to get worked up over speculation of a tour. I think everyone is getting ahead of themselves here, Rush hasn't even put out new material yet, something I'm anticipating more than a tour. Maybe it's just me but that's my 2 cents.
#30 - Posted 3/11/10 @3:37AM by tygr [contact]

#24 - I couldn't agree more! Great lyrics in that song.

Revolution, or just resistance
Is it living, or just existance
Yeah, you! It takes....

A real gem among the treasures, that one.

Hey Lance and Spin - thanks for the shout-outs. I'm always lurking...

#26- Not sure what you meant by "cutting version", but I think Jacob Moon did a great job with Subdivisions.

#29- I have to agree. It's not the excitement ,it's more the speculation and all the guessing and rumors that are a little much, I think. Gotta admit, as much as I have always been excited to go see Rush in concert,Im also looking forward more to new material and that documentary. I feel fairly sure that Rush will tour again (since it is a major source of income for them) though.
#34 - Posted 3/11/10 @1:48PM by marty from clayton

#33, I love Jacob Moon's version.
As for "cutting" version, I was referring to Hostile Intent's remake that Hermy referenced.
#35 - Posted 3/11/10 @6:03PM by random_sample [contact]

#34-Sorry about that. I thought you were referring to the Jacob Moon version.
