Posted at 1:23PM | comments (80)

Geddy Lee Rickenbacker 4001 mini replicaFrom the Power Windows site:

You've asked for it, and now it's here: a precise recreation of Geddy Lee's Rickenbacker 4001 bass. His primary instrument of the 70's, first seen during RUSH's first tour in 1974, Geddy effectively retired this bass after the Signals tour until bringing it back on tour in 2007.

This 1:4-scale replica miniature bass collectible is made of solid mahogany wood, hand crafted and airbrushed with outstanding detail. As these guitars are hand made, please allow 3-4 weeks for delivery as supplies are limited.

This bass guitar sells for $24.99. Click here to order. For the complete RUSH miniature instruments collection, click here. Axeheaven is providing a special discount for Power Windows Website Users. To receive the discount, just enter the below coupon code while checking out at AxeHeaven.com:

Hate to sound like a purist....but Geddy's Ric has a rosewood fretboard..this model replica appears to have a black one.

Not that it matters.

or does it?

Nice...great details, that's one heck of a deal at $25 -It's nice to see, somebody not trying to nickel & dime me to death...
It looks like $50 worth of hand-made talent from the pic'.
#13 - Posted 3/1/10 @3:41PM by broughttoyoubytheletterj [contact]

Naw'...doesnt matter.
#14 - Posted 3/1/10 @4:01PM by Lamb Saag [contact]

I usually don't buy any tchotchkes sight unseen, but I would love to have this iconic bass guitar to display in my man cave (so that when my friends with miniature hands come over, we can crank up the stereo and pretend we're Chris Squire and Geddy Lee...)

[note to self: order guitar. find friends with little hands]
#15 - Posted 3/1/10 @4:07PM by scootertrashaz [contact]

hm.. thats kinda cool. But I want the real thing.. :)
#16 - Posted 3/1/10 @4:14PM by Rob

I don't think you could find the real thing for $25!
#17 - Posted 3/1/10 @4:29PM by katskahnne [contact]

Sweeeeeeeet. I luv the 4001 (I play a white one which I got in 1975). They're amazing, great action, unique tone...::sigh:: Having a real one I might just be content to ogle the mini from afar. Though, if times get better, it might make a nice bit of "retail therapy" for me... ;-)
#18 - Posted 3/1/10 @4:35PM by broughttoyoubytheletterj [contact]

Ummmm.....#16 - coca-cola ? er....?
#19 - Posted 3/1/10 @4:52PM by Rushian Roulette [contact]

I think my Alex bobble head would be jealous if the Geddy bobble head had something this cool.
#20 - Posted 3/1/10 @5:10PM by gag2man [contact]

Just as long as the tour is not 1/4 sized.
#21 - Posted 3/1/10 @6:04PM by Syaoran_2001 [contact]

Geddy's Ric has a Badass bridge, this replica looks like it has the stock bridge. I think they just made a replica of a standard Ric 4001 and slapped Geddy's name on it. So, not really the "precise recreation" that it claims to be.
#22 - Posted 3/1/10 @6:52PM by snowdog20 [contact]

I think mini replicas of all Neil's drumkits would be popular. I'd have to get them all. My fave is the white one with the double bass used on HYF.
#23 - Posted 3/1/10 @7:52PM by Hemisfears [contact]

I think it looks horrible.
#24 - Posted 3/1/10 @8:09PM by vauxio [contact]

I ordered the Fender replica before Christmas, but sadly they were out of stock. Jason from Axe Heaven graciously sent me the 4001 instead, before they were listed on the site, so I could still give it as a gift. This replica is really kickass! You can really appreciate the design that went into the Rickenbacker.

Thanks to Axe Heaven for their great customer service. =D

#21-#23-#25-#26 handmake a more "precise" replica & put it up for sale for $25...
Do you want Dirk to personally autograph it to you also...

If any of you are wondering about the quality, I have the miniature Geddy J-Bass on my desk at work (to go along with the real one at home!) and the detail is quite good, definitely worth the price. It even comes with a miniature guitar stand.

Well, if he did sign it, then that would make it quite different than a standard R 4001, which is all you really have here.

Get it?

#32...I agree

For $25 I wouldn't expect much more then a do-it-yourself Pinewood Derby kit, but this appears to be a great little replica at steal of a price.

#35...

At least they have the correct shape of the bass.
I have, two pins of Rickenbackers. One a regular 4001 and one that is of the black/black 4080/12 doubleneck. They look fantastic. Way better than the pendant in the OP.

OK Glortiz...looks like we both have another guitar to order! But I'll wait..it took almost 4 months for my drums to arrive!
#46 - Posted 3/2/10 @6:54PM by glortiz [contact]

#24 vauxio, Jason with Axe Heaven Rocks! I dealt with him several months ago and told him that if he did a Ric 4001 replica, I would get that and Alex's double neck. I have the Geddy Jazz and Alex ES-355, they are sweet!

So yes MMB, we have another toy to order, the collection must be complete!
#47 - Posted 3/2/10 @7:07PM by Hemisfears [contact]

It's hardly precise. As I see it, I see seven things wrong with it. Then I looked at the whole thing and it's awful. The headstock isn't even close.

If it looked half as good as the Alex Lifeson doubleneck, it would be cool, but it looks like a cartoon drawing of the Rickenbacker 4001.

Waste of money.
#48 - Posted 3/2/10 @7:59PM by inturmoil [contact]

This is NOT a Geddy Lee Rickenbacker. Geddy's rics had Badass bridges. That's a standard POS rick bridge. I actually own a 1974 ric that is identical to Geddy's. Complete with Badass bridge. It may even have been one of his, who knows.
Jason
#49 - Posted 3/2/10 @8:03PM by Ricbass4003 [contact]

It is neat to see the Ricky mini but since I own a 4003 (even though not a 4001) I don't need this. I like the pins hemisfears has. I have one also that looks like my bass. It was a lot cheaper and more precise. I'm saving my $ for tickets!!!
This copy seems to have toaster pick ups at least it looks that way. Ged's doesn't.
#50 - Posted 3/2/10 @8:13PM by Hemisfears [contact]

The neck woods aren't ebony, they should be rosewood. The inlays are wrong, the top horn is too thin and round, the bottom horn is pointed, the pickup in the neck position is too close to the neck, the pickguard is too big and looks like a V63 model, the bridge pickup should be a bigger chrome piece, the bridge itself is too small, and Geddy removed the stock Rickenbacker bridge and replaced it with a Badass I bridge, the headstock (in the full pic) is wayy wrong in terms of correct shape and from what I remember seeing eariler, did it even say Rickenbacker on it?

For those that think this is a "precise" recreation of Geddy's (or anyone's for that matter) Rickenbacker, you sure have no idea what attention to details is all about.
I wouldn't pay a cent for this.
#51 - Posted 3/2/10 @8:35PM by main monkey business [contact]

To agree with Glortiz (#46)...I have the S&A drum kit, Alex's doubleneck and ES-355, and Geddy's Jazz Bass...they are very detailed and life-like...very nice quality. Jason is very good to work with...stayed in contact with me for over 3 months while I waited for the drums to arrive (first order sold out as soon as they were advertised). The quality is second to none, and customer service is fantastic!
#52 - Posted 3/2/10 @8:37PM by main monkey business [contact]

Gee Hemisfears....so what do you really think?
#53 - Posted 3/2/10 @8:40PM by Rob

Overall..not impressed.

Hmmm...buy cheap looking guitar replica,or save money for some future tour.....

seems the answer is obvious.
#54 - Posted 3/2/10 @8:54PM by TheHonestMan [contact]

#49 - I own Geddy's signature Fender Jazz and can tell you everything about that. But I have always wondered what the difference(s) between the 4001 and 4003 Rickenbackers is(are). I'm thinking about buying one within a year or two, and perhaps you could fill me in?

Yes, it is not exactly the same as Ged's bass. That's ok. Axeheaven wanted to created something that paid tribute to one of the greatest bass players ever, and I think they achieved that. Sure it may have a different neck and bridge, but it still means the same thing. No one is buying this because it's a smaller version of a bass that Geddy used to play. They are buying it because it represents our love of RUSH. I personally will not purchase this, but I still respect and appreciate the work that was required to create it.
#55 - Posted 3/2/10 @8:58PM by Hemisfears [contact]

I understand the idea behind it. It's a nice tribute to Geddy and his bass.
My only problem with the whole thing is using the word "precise" to describe it. That's all. If that word wasn't there I would have not cared either way.
#56 - Posted 3/2/10 @9:14PM by Rob

Doesn't Geddy own a 4003 also?....I thought I read somewhere he bought his 4001 right after the band signed with mercury...then around '78 he bought a 4003.

Where's all the Ric fans?? someone elaborate?
#57 - Posted 3/2/10 @9:21PM by skarni [contact]

Rubish.
#58 - Posted 3/2/10 @9:23PM by TheHonestMan [contact]

#56 - Actually, his first 4001 was a white/cream color one. He plays it in the FBN and Anthem videos. The one he bought in '78 was the black 4001 that the model is replicating. I believe...lol
#59 - Posted 3/2/10 @9:28PM by Hemisfears [contact]

Geddy's first Rickenbacker 4001 was bought with advance money when they were signed. That bass was used from 1974-1977.
The second Rickenbacker 4001 was used from 1978-1983 and on the S7A tour for A Passage to Bangkok.
Geddy also had a 4002, a model 4080 doubleneck (bass/six string) and a model 4080/12 (bass/12 string).

The basses all had Badass I bridges installed except for the 4002 (I'm not sure what bridge was on that one, could have left it stock) and the 4080 that had a Badass II.
He changed the tuning machines on all of his basses to Grovers (wavy style, not those cheap Grover wavy tuners Rickenbacker used) except for the 4002 which had the stock tuners.
#60 - Posted 3/2/10 @9:29PM by Hemisfears [contact]

Sorry, should have said S&A tour, not S7A. My bad and the fact that there is no way to edit posts here. Ugggh!
#61 - Posted 3/2/10 @9:30PM by Hemisfears [contact]

#56, you're right the first Rick WAS that as you say "cream" one. It was actually white.
#62 - Posted 3/2/10 @9:31PM by Hemisfears [contact]

Sorry I meant #58. I need a break from this computer.
#63 - Posted 3/2/10 @9:33PM by Rob

What Ric is he playing in the finding my way/best I can/In the mood videos?
#64 - Posted 3/2/10 @9:35PM by TheHonestMan [contact]

#59 - That sounds right to me, but I just remembered video of him playing a black Ric before '78. Here's a video from 1975 where he has a black Rickenbacker (and some dance moves too!):

link

Here's a video where he plays his white Ric from '74:

link

Who knows? LOL. I think I remember seeing a pic of him sitting in a chair with about 5-6 basses surrounding him.
#65 - Posted 3/2/10 @9:39PM by Rob

#64 You're right!! That picture has his Fender precision and his Fender teardrop.

Geddy was definitely playing a black Ric from '74 onward too.
#66 - Posted 3/2/10 @9:48PM by limelighter [contact]

strange but true. alex and geddy do live in rosedale. two blocks apart in fact.
#67 - Posted 3/2/10 @9:48PM by random_sample [contact]

haha, wow. quite the in depth analysis of that miniature rickenbacher Geddy Lee bass.
Looks pretty cool to me. What are you expecting??
I saw the Neil Peart drumset and Alex Lifeson guitar. All of them pretty cool. I didnt see anything about a protective case or display stand or anything. Those things would be best in some type of clear case with a base or something, just to look at.
#68 - Posted 3/2/10 @9:53PM by Hemisfears [contact]

#64, that's the first black Rickenbacker he got. He used it from 1974-1977. It's the one seen in the pics on ATWAS and AFTK. He recorded Cygnus X-1 with it.
The difference from that black Rick 4001 and the black Rick 4001 he got in 1978 and used through the Signals tour and later for Bangkok on the S&A tour is the neck pickup is closer to the neck, the headstock is slightly smaller and the pearl inlays are full length. It also had more treble to it's sound wheras the 78-83 Rick is a bit meatier. That bass (74-77) had the white plastic ring around the Badass I bridge and the other black Rick (78-83 & S&A tour Bangkok) has the black plastic ring around the Badass I bridge. In the video clip you posted of it, it still had the original Rickenbacker bridge in it at the time.
#69 - Posted 3/2/10 @9:58PM by Hemisfears [contact]

#67, for a replica that is that size, I'd expect better detail. The Lifeson doubleneck and the drumkit are fine. That Rick "replica" is horrible. Check my post #43 and see how much detail and more accurate overall detail can be achieved with a replica that is not much bigger than a half dollar. They could have at least got the shape of the bass correct. they didn't even do that. Oh, it's close, but that only counts in horseshoes and handgrenades.
#70 - Posted 3/2/10 @10:02PM by TheHonestMan [contact]

#68 - Oooo, I got you now. I didn't know he bought two Rickenbackers (one white and one black) in 1974.

I stumbled across this equipment list. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but the Rick info mirrors what you said so I'm guessing it's right:

link

I had no idea he had so many Wals. I'm guessing that his 5-string Wal was the one used for Lock and Key (even though you can play it on a 4-string tuned down a half step like he did on ASOH link ).

Wow, I could talk about basses forever. To those who don't play bass, I'm very sorry :)
#71 - Posted 3/2/10 @10:18PM by Rob

#64 The funniest thing about the Finding my way vid..is that I think it's the only time i have ever seen Geddy with earrings..(in both ears!)
#72 - Posted 3/2/10 @10:20PM by Hemisfears [contact]

#70, here's that list:
Rickenbacker 4002
Rickenbacker 4001 (2)
Rickenbacker 3001
Rickenbacker double-neck guitar-bass (4001/standard 12-string Rick with humbucking pickups)
Rickenbacker double-neck guitar-bass (4001/6-string)

Fender Precision (/w Treble pickup, wired in stereo) (tear drop shape)
Fender Jazz Bass (1 is circa '72, 4 others are circa '96)
---------------------------------------
(all of those above bases have BadAss bridges)

Yes, all have Badass bridges, but they are the Badass I's except for the 4080 (bass/six string) it has a Badass II bridge, just like the one on his Fender Jazz (black one 1972) The 3001 was rarely used as the old Fender P-Bass (teardrop)

I'll talk (Rickenbacker/Geddy) bass all day. (when I'm home) PM me if you want to.
#73 - Posted 3/2/10 @10:27PM by jmreidfo [contact]

I just want tour dates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#74 - Posted 3/2/10 @11:04PM by Ricbass4003 [contact]

#54- The 4001 was discontinued in the early 80's and replaced with the 4003, which is suppose to be an improved version of the 4001. The 4001 has a thinner neck and was designed to take flatwound strings although plenty of players use the roundwounds on them. The truss rod design is different on 4001 vs. 4003. 4003 model has mono and stereo output (use to be called ric-o-sound). 4001 had stereo as an option at one point, before that mono. You might like the feel of the 4001 if you like a slim neck on the 4003 it is thicker. I've played 4001 and liked that the neck was thinner.
I use the Fender Jazz bass (Ged model) for gigs. though I feel that the neck is faster on the ric. I had the tuners on the GL model, I need to change them out. I think on the newer models of geds bass they did do that.
#75 - Posted 3/2/10 @11:16PM by Hemisfears [contact]

#74, Schaller makes some great replacement tuners for Fenders. I have them on my fretless Jazz Bass. They look the same, but the quality is better.
#76 - Posted 3/3/10 @9:10AM by Rob

Only a Rush site would have in-depth conversations about gear!

I like it...and I don't even play!
#77 - Posted 3/3/10 @2:24PM by katskahnne [contact]

#74 - Good points about the neck. When I got my 4001 I'd heard from various sources that you couldn't use Rotosound strings on them or it "would void the warranty". (I used the Dean Markley half-round-wounds, which I think have themselves been discontinued. DAMN!) But a few years ago I went to NAMM and visited the Rotosound booth, where they told me that they'd reconstructed the strings so as not to put as much stress on truss rods, so they could safely be used with the old 4001's. (Gave me the idea that the bit about "voiding the warranty" hadn't been just a rumor/urban legend...) Made me wonder how Chris Squire got on all those years, using that combination...

I used to also have a Fender P bass which I bought at a post-earthquake sale at Guitar Center in 1994. (Lot of gear with major to minor cosmetic damage, went cheap...) I liked the option of having both and used mainly the Fender on a demo I did in the mid 90's. Unfortunately, when times got tough on us, the Fender was one of the pieces of gear we had to sell to keep a roof over our heads for a few more weeks (we were living in Sacramento at the time). Damn, I miss that thing. Figured it'd be easier to replace than the Rick, though - I said if it came to it, they'd find me in the gutter on 12th Street curled up around my 4001...
#78 - Posted 3/3/10 @4:30PM by Ricbass4003 [contact]

#77- John Hall the CEO of Rickenbacker said one time that the 4001 was designed with what string was available at the time which were the flats. The rounds do put much more stress on the trusses but he also pointed out that so many were doing just that when the "new" technology of the rounds came out without any problems. Ric's are built to last. Truss rod system and unibody. Total agreement about the Rick, I baby mine and only gig with the Fender. It will pass from my cold dead hands in my will. If I could afford a Ric tuxedo bass as an investment, I'd do it. I like the look of them. They are very rare.

#75 - I was looking at those and also at hipshot. If you are having good luck with the schallers, I think I might go with them. I haven't heard any first hand feedback regarding the hipshots. I had to buy special strap lock bolts from Ric to be able to use the schaller strap lock system with it. Worth it though. These are now standard on basses from 1995 on up. At least I could use the ones that came with the schaller system with the GL bass so it's uniform.
I had heard that Chris Squire is credited as being the first person to stereo wire his bass. After it worked, Ric came out with the Rick-O-Sound option. The 4001 model he brought in the 60's was mono. He stereo wired it and it had stereo out. So if you are ever on Jeopardy and they ask you that for 1000 you will know the answer. LOL.
#79 - Posted 3/3/10 @5:54PM by Hemisfears [contact]

I'll take Rickenbacker mono to stereo wiring for $1000 Alex........

I'm going to wire my Geddy Lee Fender Jazz Bass for stereo. I'm ditching the tone pot (never use it anyways) and adding a second output jack wired for stereo. Then I can play it through two amps like my Rickenbackers.
What a total difference in sound I'll have with that Jazz Bass!!
Next will be my CS bass, fretless Jazz and then the WAL.
Then I have the option on all my basses to use mono or stereo. Unless I dont have two amps, it will be stereo from that point on.
