Rush documentary update
Posted at 5:58PM | comments (75)

UPDATE - 2/18@8:27PM: TNMS member Oz who gave the report below also mentions that they are discussing a September-ish DVD release date and that this info came straight from filmmaker Scot McFadyen. Knowing how these things work, September-ish probably really means November-ish. :) It's a good sign though and this jibes with earlier reports I had heard that the DVD would be released towards the end of this year.

Late last month I reported that the long-anticipated Rush documentary had been completed and would likely premier sometime this Spring. A few days later this information was confirmed via a post to the official Banger Films Facebook page:

... the Rush Doc is done and dusted. Look for some announcements and possibly a premiere in the Spring!! January 31 at 4:23pm

Shortly after this confirmation, an article feature on Rush for the March 2010 issue of The Walrus magazine was posted online which discussed the documentary at length. It included several quotes from filmmaker Sam Dunn and also confirmed what I'd mentioned in my late January post; that the movie would contain footage of the Canadian Bandstand gig that Rush played at Laura Secord High School in St. Catharines, ON in 1974 with original drummer John Rutsey on drums.

The National Midday Sun user Oz was lucky enough to get a screening of the film and revealed several details in this post from yesterday:

Was lucky enough to see this last week & have to say I enjoyed it, even if it wasn't the final mixed down version.
Trying to cram 30+ years into 1hr 42 mins, means that invariably the film makers haven't gone into depth over every album, but have focused on what the band perceive to be breakthroughs & turning points. Pleasingly there's a good chunk of the film dedicated to the early days, including previously unseen photo's of Ged & Al as kids & teenagers, interviews with parents, plus footage of the earliest filmed gig with [John Rutsey] at [Laura Secord] High School. Anecdotes & reverence from Gene Simmons,Sebastien Bach, Jack Black, Mike Portnoy, Kim Mitchell, Billy Corgan and more. Interviews with Ray Daniels, Terry Brown, Rupert Hine, Pter Collins, Howard Ungerleider & Liam Birt as well as interviews with Ged & Al & Neil (obviously) with Neil in particular being more open than I'd anticipated. The friendship between the 3 is what resonated the strongest for me. ... Due to Premier at Tribecca Film Festival (New York) ...

So he says it was 1 hour, 42 minutes long although this was not necessarily the final version that he saw. He also mentions that it's due to premier at the Tribecca Film Festival in New York which runs from April 21 through May 2, although this has not been confirmed. I should also add that he later edited his post adding this bit of information regarding the tour:

The other news to come out was the band will be going on the road later this year, however Europe is not included.

We already knew they were touring but this is the first I'd heard that Europe would not be included, although I suspected as much. None of this is official of course. I'm still hearing that the official tour announcement will come before the end of this month.

Excellent news...hopefully the final cut will be longer, or there will be an extended "Director's Cut" DVD released at a later date.

Can't wait to see it.

Can't wait for this to hit the market...if it's anything like "Backstage Secrets"..with the focus on the roadies and people behind the scene at a Rush concert..it'll be great! (I know Glortiz..I need to get that movie back to you...everytime I plan on it...we get hit with more snow!)

I have been looking forward to documentary for years it seems like. Hopefully extras will be included in the dvd release!! I can't wait!

Anyone remember how long dates were released after the official tour announcement last time? For 2008, Ed had most of the dates posted before they were released, and since he hasn't posted any maybe nothing has been scheduled quite yet. Looks like we could be looking at a VERY late summer tour. Hmmmm, if the tour doesn't start for a few months, that would give the boys plenty of time to record and produce new music. This is all really coming together...

2010 is the year of RUSH!!!!!!!!!!

#10...Tickets went on sale the first week of Feb '08 at the box offices and Ticketmaster. I saw the second show of the leg in Ft. Lauderdale the second week of April. It all happened very quickly after the dates were announced.

I was going to post something kind of along those lines. But it another sense. I, for one, find it ridiculous that people would expect an analysis of every album. Of course it would be great, but I shudder to think how many fans will actually be pissed that they did not go into such depth. Kind of look the gift horse in the mouth a bit too much. I am just happy they did one. They could have just as easily not done one, and we should all remember that and just be thankful.

saving my *$$$* for the tour, and hopefully ft laud, pompano and tampa!!! love ya ed, tanks for da info!
#16 - Posted 2/17/10 @7:54PM by glortiz [contact]

Excellent news all around! You cannot compress a 30+ year career into a documentary without leaving some things out, but content is king. If, as reported, the boys are please with it, then no question it is excellent and it will ROCK! Yes Honestman, my collection will be complete!

For those who want a blow by blow DVD, there is Rush 1974-1981. It's not that bad and only goes up to Exit...Stage Left. Perhaps there will be a Part 2, but with these things, they are subjective and some of it I have objections with. I want a documentary to have facts and I am sure this one is chock full of them.

Now, the most important post of the evening...

Hey Rush, I want you to earn a paycheck! Get Busy!
#17 - Posted 2/17/10 @8:09PM by Lol [contact]

Can't wait to see the documentary. Eventual DVD purchase of course, but will it be aired in the UK I wonder? It'd be great to see it in some art-house movie theatre.

If Rush are not visiting these shores on tour I might as well get saving and make a trip of it. To see the boys play in Toronto would be a lifetime's dream come true. Actually, two nights would be even better. Would any of you kind folks have suggestions for the best venues to catch a show in the US?
#18 - Posted 2/17/10 @8:15PM by Sean

I spoke with a few people related to the film back in early Jan and they originally had the film at 4 hours. They recorded over 300 hours of interviews and they said more than likely it was going to be 2 hours because it was going to be aired exclusively on VH1 and for commercial reasons needed to be near that mark. They also said a bonus disc of footage would be included but I was sad to hear of the things they were cutting out. If you are a 70s fan..this is your dream come true.

I prefer the 80s stuff myself over everything, but will take what we can get.

As for no Europe, I honestly thought that was a given.
#19 - Posted 2/17/10 @8:18PM by Sean

Oh and ED you confirmed that high school bandstand footage back in November not January. Give yourself some credit son ;)
#20 - Posted 2/17/10 @8:29PM by cpb [contact]

F'ing H!!! Is there ANYTHING Jack Black is NOT in???

S word.
#21 - Posted 2/17/10 @8:33PM by main monkey business [contact]

Honest Man...Sean...
Give me your humble opinions...I just want to see if it meshes with mine...seeing how the tourdates are coming a little late, and the tour looks like a late Summer tour..I keep thinking that this could very well be an arena tour this time. At the same time...as Neil said...where album sales used to be where the money was..now it's touring. That would make me speculate that the tour would still be outdoors where they could get larger crowds. But then I think back, and remember that the average crowd at a Rush show was between 9000 and 12000 people...a mid-size arena could handle that..Holy fishpaste!!! I have so many conflicting thoughts...give me some insight friends!!!
#22 - Posted 2/17/10 @8:36PM by AngularMass [contact]

very good news all around, though I could easily go without seeing Sebastian Bach ever again
#23 - Posted 2/17/10 @8:52PM by The_king_will_Neil [contact]

I concur with Snowdog (was that '08 or '07? I'm thinking of the first S&A, which I think was '07).

I believe we got Ed's 'confirmed' show in Dec, the formal announcement in early Jan, tickets (Atlanta, first show) early Feb, the show in early/mid Apr.

So if we get 'official' dates in Feb, we could have dates as early as late May. (Fingers crossed!!!)

Pure speculation, but I would read "no Europe" as meaning "in '10" (they've already said they want to do South America). That's not to say there won't be an '11.
#24 - Posted 2/17/10 @9:02PM by TheHonestMan [contact]

#21 - MMB, I was thinking the same thing, but I didn't mention it because I didn't want to jinx it. I haven't had any luck in the past scoring front row tickets, but if it's in an arena there might be an open floor!! I would honestly get there about 10 hours before the the doors open just to make sure I would be right up in the front. Plus, who wouldn't love hanging out with RUSH fans for a few hours before the show. I'm positive the arenas could hold that many people. Here's keeping my fingers crossed.
#25 - Posted 2/17/10 @9:03PM by hitmewithmusic [contact]

#22 Riiiiight!
#26 - Posted 2/17/10 @9:41PM by Get up and go the distance [contact]

#23 - As I mentioned in another thread, I purchased tickets on Feb. 15/08 for a show in late May. I clearly remember having it marked on my calendar long before that. So I think we're looking at a tour starting much later than May.
#27 - Posted 2/17/10 @9:44PM by glortiz [contact]

MMB and TheHonestMan, most of the Rush shows I have seen were all indoors, they take on a whole new perspective than outdoors. The last few times I saw them starting with Vapor Trails have all been in outside venues except for one. I told Zitro for years, she needed to see them indoors then the 2nd leg of the tour, Joe Luis Arena in Detroit she experienced it!

When the lights drop, it's total cave darkness until the intro begins. The boys and the only band who had mastered this impact is Zep. Rush takes it to a whole new level! Spindrift, Between the Wheels, Entre Nous, and so many others, you see the light show like never before! Everything is so much more vivid and intense! And intimate! It's almost as if no matter where you sit, you can reach out and touch their music!

Touch them.

Songs like Dreamline, Subdivisions and Armor and Sword take you to a level that you cannot experience otherwise!

And then comes the encore, Alex with his white Gibson that I call "The Beast!" It gets no better, the boys have this mastered!

Our boys have been known to make changes ever few years. If this tour, they decide to focus on closed arenas, then rats, we are in for a pellet of mass proportions!

Get ready for the feast!
#28 - Posted 2/17/10 @9:51PM by jmreidfo [contact]

End of this month, eh! Ah, I'm ready! St. L is sure to be a definite...who's up for another Dave & Buster's pre-show throwdown!?!?!??!?!

Indy and Cinci I'm sure as well.

Nashville, though....????
#29 - Posted 2/17/10 @10:08PM by TheHonestMan [contact]

OOOOhhhh. I need dates! Up till late June I'm in STL, then I'm in Boston after that. Maybe a trip to Baltimore for some Ratcon and a RUSH concert. I'd be down for some Dave & Busters in STL if I'm still in town. I wish we could just get the dates already so I don't have to worry about if I'll be in the right towns at the right time!

#27 - I've always wondered what the light show would look like indoors. When I saw them in Kansas City in 2008, it was completely daylight outside. Luckily by the sun went down a little just in time for the Dreamline lasers lol.
#30 - Posted 2/17/10 @10:16PM by SpaceTrucker [contact]

This is a dream come true for all RUSH fans, a full length documentary, AWESOME! I cant wait. Its the same for all new RUSH material and tours, very exciting.

TheHonestMan, I had a third row experience (it might as well have been the first row I was so close) when RUSH toured with UFO warming up in 1977. It was surreal, I was off center stage just a bit on Geedys side and it's something I have never experienced since. Being able to look Geddy in the eye, pump your fist or point at him and have him respond back with a head nod or gesture with his bass while hes playing one of their amazing songs, Holy S#*t, I will never forget that and I still have the ticket stub.

Nobody has taken the July 3rd slot at Summerfest in Milwaukeet yet. This date is being saved for Rush. Opening night in Milwaukee? Wherever it is I am there in the front row. The sooner they get these dates out the better ticket sales will be.
#32 - Posted 2/17/10 @10:55PM by RaceUnderPressure [contact]

indoor is the only way to go..i remember the first time i saw an outdoor show and i could see them walk out on stage...the house lights go down...the crowd go nuts - that's rock and roll!
#33 - Posted 2/17/10 @11:11PM by Sub-Xanadu Man [contact]

Don't get too excited Honest Man. Certainly the floor of any indoor show, where Rush is concerned at least, would not be general admission.

I saw them at the Baltimore Convention Center during the second leg of the Vapor Trails Tour and I was able to get about 10th Row Center. Great show even if the turnout wasn't the best. Truly an intimate setting and I agree with Gloritz. Seeing Rush indoors is way better. I think probably 15 of my 20 Rush shows have been indoors.

Anyways, I can't wait to see them this year and to hopefully cross paths with some of you Rats again.

Hey, does this mean we're not getting another RatCon?? Would be sweet to have a gathering with a real Rush show as it's centerpiece! :-)
#34 - Posted 2/17/10 @11:25PM by TheHonestMan [contact]

#34 - Yeah I figured some, if not most, would have assigned seating. But from the look of it, the Frankfurt show from R30 had general admission. I may be wrong, but a guy can dream. :D

Oops, meant 33 in my post above.

#33: Oh there will be another RatCon!!! Count on it! RatCon2010 has been in its planning stages already for some time. We're waiting on tour dates! We are hoping we can successfully schedule RatCon around a Rush concert this year. Oh yeah!!!

#30: SpaceTrucker, I will agree there is *NOTHING* like being able to look at Geddy in the eye, smile at him and have him respond back! Such an amazing experience I had this last tour in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 6th rows. I thought I died and went to a very Geddy-licious Heaven!

I have seen Rush in indoor and outdoor venues and I actually prefer outdoor venues. I too was at the Rush 2008 show in KC when it seemed like the sun would be out forever! Still, I prefer outdoor venues. The most oppressively humid/hot/please help me I'm melting concert I've ever experienced was Rush in Charlotte 2008. Despite the fact that I thought I might keel over due to the heat/humidity (maybe it was the plain hotness of Geddy Lee on that stage!) I believe it was *THE* ultimate Rush concert, personally. Something about that show was truly special, 100% pure magic! While it was so oppressively hot, Alex, Neil and Geddy put on such a show - all I can say is WOW! I am so thankful I took oodles and oodles of photos that show.

To see RUSH live anywhere is the experience of a life time to say the least. To see RUSH at more than one venue is always a must and at indoor and outdoor venues. My personal bests so far have been Red Rocks and The Gorge. Can't wait to see the tour dates!

How F... Cool is Geddy Lee!!!
#38 - Posted 2/18/10 @1:26AM by TMMB [contact]

I'm wondering if the outdoor venues (which would require decent weather) might also be conducive for Neil's motorcycle riding. Meaning...they (Rush) wouldn't want to start a tour too late in the summer for fear of running into later months with the potential of bad weather.
I suppose they could have the later tour stops in the south, but not sure if the boys have too much say in when and where they play.
#39 - Posted 2/18/10 @3:21AM by bzen

#40 - Posted 2/18/10 @4:20AM by MajorSkalle [contact]

Well. It'll be worth it!

Looks like I'll be crossing the Atlantic (again!!) to see them as well!
#42 - Posted 2/18/10 @7:47AM by A Symptom Of Life [contact]

An hour forty two?! Is that all?? The main criticism of Sam Dunn and Banger films documentaries is that they take on too large of subject matter to contain it in a film under two hours long. Metal: A Headbanger's Journey could have easily been the metal version of Ken Burn's Jazz. Global Metal was a collection of postcards, scribbled on in haste and dumped in a postbox. The only film of theirs that matched the scope of the subject tackled was Iron Maiden Flight 666. Please don't get me wrong, I love all three films, own them on DVD and nothing makes me feel more proud to be a metalhead than when Sam sums up the metal life experience at the end of Journey. I just wish when they take on such expansive subject matter, such as the four decade career of Rush, they give it the respect (time) it deserves.
#43 - Posted 2/18/10 @8:08AM by A Symptom Of Life [contact]

Replace "The" in the third sentence of post #42 with "My" - makes more sense that way. On with the show...

SOOO looking forward to this... Some questions I'm sure no one (Not EVEN Super Ed) can answer; When will it be released-the actual date-when will the DVD come out, and when will the Road Crew Doc come out?
#47 - Posted 2/18/10 @11:18AM by joerock213 [contact]

When are they going to release concert footage from the T4E tour? They played 2112 in its entirety on that tour!
#48 - Posted 2/18/10 @11:29AM by LanceTheShred [contact]

It will be tough to make ALL Rush fans happy with the length of this documentary whatever it may be. I think the buck 42 version would be solely for the festivals and the package for purchasing will contain some additional footage. Either way, this is one scrumptious rat pellet.

#33 SubXanMan! "Hey, does this mean we're not getting another RatCon?? OMG Dude! LOL! LMAO!! LMFAO! ***Flips off the back of office chair in hysterics***

#36- I too was at the Charlotte gig. Saw them in VB during the 07 tour....drove to Charlotte for 08--Question: I remeber the heat for sure- and the setting sun impeding the video a bit- was it your impression that there was not very much live video feed being projected? I loved the show- had "decent" seats...but seemed to feel the VB gig was showing video almost throughout the show and alot of blank screen at Charlotte...Your thoughts?
#50 - Posted 2/18/10 @11:51AM by random_sample [contact]

#40-
I wouldnt count it out completely, that Rush won't go to Europe at all, at this point. Nothing official has been announced by anyone officially connected to the band. I also remember in Neil's book 'Roadshow' ,they seemed to enjoy a lot of their experiences in Europe on the R30 tour. I'd say "who knows?" at this point, where exactly they will play and when.
#51 - Posted 2/18/10 @12:08PM by Sirius [contact]

# 14 - I Guess you cant have everything..Its just that..everywhere I Go,The only thing that ppl (even Some Fans) recognize from Rush is Moving Pictures...Pratically nothing else!.I Mean,It looks like Rush only Lived from 1980 to 1984..Like..Hello?..Ure talking about a Band that had like 20 Studio Albums,Live Albums,Compilations,DVDs,GRAMMY Nominations,Officers Of Canada, like 7 times Juno Winning,Neil Peart Beeing voted Best Recording Performance since 1980,Hit Singles(Not Just Tom Sawyer),Books Released...The Documentary Should have been extended to 3 hours instead in my opinion..
1:42 is not enough for Rock Gods..XD...To me and others who had like missed their entire carreer would LOVE to see the band in early Eras like..The COS Era,The HEM Era,The Signals Era,The PW Era,The RTB Era(Which I Think Was My Favorite Of All,Along With Presto),The T4E Era,and even S&A Which is just 3 years ago!..To see what the band was thinking back then and Now,the style change...Everything!.

Wtv.We can only find out when it comes out..At least, they picked up old footage of the early days!...But just asking..will the band be interviewed in this Doc..or will they pick up old interviews?..

Anyways Gotta Go! Laterz

Yessss!! Looking forward to this upcoming tour so much. We're ready to use some miles and hit the road. One of the best venues last time was the Gorge. We flew, drove and dragged our camping equipment there - but it was so worth it. Wild - like a video from heaven with the water in the background - amazing. I think I need to get a new farewell to kings jacket - I wore the last one out! Thanks Ed!

I used to like the indoor shows better back in the day when we would just take in the great light shows and admire from afar. Now, I know I'll be dancing for 3 hours - and need some fresh air - shorts and tennies!! Thank goodness they take a good break so we can get to the bathroom - haha ! Have a great day everyone!

I was at that 08 Charlotte show too-it was a great show but really sticky. Good thing there is a Hooters near the venue...
#58 - Posted 2/18/10 @3:53PM by AFarCryfromFBN [contact]

topleo - I too saw the 07 VB and 08 Charlotte shows. I honestly don't remember how much live footage was shown in Charlotte. I do remember this, (and have to agree 100% with PetieLee) the 08 Charlotte show FLAT OUT ROCKED!! I have never seen them mesh more perfectly than that show. And I don't think it is just because I had a meet and greet at the show either. That show was just MAGIC, pure and simple.

btw are you local here in VB? If so, hit the contact button. Would love to meet up with other local Rush nuts.
#59 - Posted 2/18/10 @3:58PM by AFarCryfromFBN [contact]

BOCB/MMB - I have seen the boys indoors (Long Beach on Signals tour) and outdoors (VA Beach 02 and 07, Charlotte 08) and I believe that I prefer the outdoor venues. I think the acoustics are better when they don't try to contain the sound in a confined space. Rush was made to be cranked up and allowed to drift out as far as possible!!

I go to Riverbend usually to see them and get my a** kicked by the security goons with ground beef for brains. They should play Cintas center or Nippert stadium. T4E was the best tour ever.

is porcupine tree coming to canada or did i just miss it? cause after a while you realize time flies......
#62 - Posted 2/18/10 @5:52PM by LanceTheShred [contact]

#61 limelighter-Indeed they are:

Quebec City- May 6
Montreal-May 7
Toronto-May 8

Some rat-cupines and myself are working on a few dates here in the U.S. If you are Petie and Gedhed then you are working on MULTIPLE dates in the U.S.! It's an SW thing..

And the best thing that you can do
Is take whatever comes to you
;)

#62: Yes!!! Multiple eargasms as Petie would say! Ha! It's gonna' be a great year for Rat-cupines! And you bet--it's a SW thing. :::fans self::: ;D
Can't wait for the shows--especially the *big* one in NYC!

Obviously I'm disappointed that Rush won't be touring Europe, especially when Mr Lifeson said that after the great reception they had during the R30 tour they would include Europe on every tour in the future. But maybe they will come over in 2011 in the spring after they have released a new album on CD. Who knows after we went without seeing them for 12 years we can wait a couple more

Greene - that's awesome news! :-) Congrats! Hope it comes to others around here in need too!

Me...usual story. I'd bring up my jewelry biz more often if I didn't feel like I'd be "stepping on toes"...but even money aside, everyone please send good luck thoughts...my doctor is *trying* to fast-track my back surgery so I should be ready to rock by the time Rush hit SoCal, whenever that is. County medical isn't exactly known for their blinding speed, though (it took them 18 MONTHS to diagnose an injury that could end up paralyzing me from the waist down) and I just could not take missing yet *another* Rush tour. So - again - may the deities of employment, good health, medical coverage and good timing smile upon all of us!!!

Thanks For the follow up Ed. We are all such rabid fans that are glued to our computers, no wonder this rumor spread quickly.
That being said, I just spoke with a co-worker who was in Vancouver for the opening ceremonies. He was in attendance at the 2nd of 2 dress rehearsals that took place 2 days before the final show. Rush was never scheduled to attend. There was never a "Ontario" segment in the show. The opening ceremonies were identical to the rehearsal that took place well before the athlete died. Rush was never slotted to preform. Nothing was cancelled.

#65-
Nothing official has been announced regarding an upcoming Rush tour. It's hearsay. I wouldnt get disappointed until you actually see/hear something official announced and Europe isn't included.

#62 lance. thanks for the update. i hope to attend the toronto show on may 8. i have a pretty good feeling that geddy or alex or even both will be going to the concert. they usually go see other bands that they like. heck, they would need an off night from their busy schedules. just remember, the 'unfinished business' is just around the corner.

Lance - Point taken my friend! See you at Club Xanadu sometime this year then. You like my avatar huh? Good times!

This is going to be a great year. Looking forward to the PT show in Cincy too. :-)

#67 - Never an Ontario segment to begin with? I'm not gainsaying you or your friend, it just seems *wierd* to leave Ontario out. It'd sorta be like, if the US did it, leaving New York out. Bizarre.

Gaumont 77...check out the next thread...you're exactly right..and I think you'll be pretty happy with what it says.

I too have seen Rush indoors 4 times out of the 40 concerts I've been to. Although I think the accoustics of an outdoor show are better..I'd love to see them indoors again..if nothing else but for sentimental reasons.

I am SO EXCITED to see this RUSH documentary! :D

I still hope for a Wide, but more likely "Limited" release in Theatres.
I am curious what the General Public and Network Critics take will be on the Film and learn about in the History of our beloved Band. Even those who dont know who they are but are open to watching Documentaries.
It would maybe open the door to new Fans, renew fans from the past and those who are skeptical of their talent and hear from the other Bands who admire them.
I just hope its done right, I hope they have a bigger marketing campaign to get word out on this Doc. because Rush deserve soo much, even more than us Fans give them.
And I hope the Hollywood Chamber of The Walk of Fame coincide the Ceremony for their Hollywood Star with the Docs Debut.
...I'll be there! (a lot of hopes)
:D
