Neil Peart news update: Neil's Hockey Theme story
Posted at 4:51PM | comments (30)

Neil smiling behind the hockey kit[NEWS, WEATHER, and SPORTS: February, 2010 - Fire On Ice]

UPDATE - 2/10@4:14PM: Neil posted the quiet version of The Hockey Theme that he refers to in his update to the homepage of his website.

Neil Peart has once again updated the News page on his website. In this news, weather and sports update, Neil focuses solely on the sports, describing in painstaking detail his experience recording The Hockey Theme for TSN back in December. He gives the entire back story of how the project came to be, how he became involved and his experience recording the song and filming the video. He includes plenty of great behind-the-scene photos and interesting anecdotes as well. All in all a very entertaining read. Thanks to hermy for the heads up.

Aston Martins (!!!), Macallan, drummer porn, disco hockey themes...and a Lalo Schifrin reference? Pure, unadulterated WIN. Yes, Neil, you pulled off the mother of all "Bully Beatdowns"!! :-D (Lordie, does that man have a gift for writing!!!!!)

For crying out loud!!! I've been checking the NEP website daily for over a week....sensing a *update* was just around the corner. I don't check it today..and BAM...a new update!!

#6 Rob, I feel your pain. I've been doing the same.

I love how Neil writes. You can just feel his excitement.
Now, on to the new music and tour!

Oh yeah, Hi Hermy and Tim!!
#9 - Posted 2/8/10 @9:06PM by hermy [contact]

Hey Nettie!

Wish they would hurry up and confirm that Summerfest date!
#10 - Posted 2/8/10 @9:33PM by Nettie [contact]

yeah, they'll confirm Carrie Underwood, but not Rush!

What a great essay! As a Canadian, I can identify with a lot of his memories. Hockey Night in Canada was a big part of growing up for me too. I love Neil's comment about all the various Halls of Fame into which Rush has been inducted. What sweet revenge to be in all the ones that matter but not the "official" one!
#12 - Posted 2/8/10 @10:41PM by mrdriven [contact]

Wow!!! The Hockey Theme is awesome...with all the great details Neil provides its even more amazing!!!

Bullies don't take kindly to being told "Take that!" - at least when they're standing over you.

Don't worry, Neil, those bullies got their just desserts YEARS ago!
#16 - Posted 2/9/10 @1:20AM by GedHed [contact]

Big, big hugs to Neil. I swear, I just do not like bullies. Makes me sad he was treated badly. :(

Never knew so many replicas of the R30 set were made & sold! Very cool!

#14: You are in for a mind-blowing experience! PT's absolutely amazing live--and that show will be *extremely special*. I love that that's going to be your first show--even though I would encourage you to take in a couple more if possible. But that show, for a *first* one...wow! lol!!! Strap yourself in! ha!

Nice to see the mellowing of our favorite drummer. He's come a long way since "caught in the camera eye."

That photo of him holding the Stanley Cup is priceless!!

Thanks for posting this.

It is nice to finally hear a Neil update from his website:

I received the UsedBinRadio newsletter in my email yesterday where it mentioned that Ed will be on the show tonight apparently.

#1 hermy :::waves hi::: How are you?
Take that bullies! I LOVED THAT PART TOO for so many past and present tense reasons!

A GREAT read, really enjoyed this one! I think Neil did a great job communicating what makes us crazy Canucks so passionate about hockey. It had some good laughs too. 'Drum Porn' - that one will reside in my vocabulary forever!

Hopefully some of those pictures will be made available as posters. I like the picture with Neil sitting on the floor cross legged like a little kid with the kit behind him. It reminds me of the team picture taken after they win the cup. The last picture that Craggie captured... well done. Yes... pretty neat eh!

Next to Neil the commercial below says it all on how and why a majority of Canadians feel the way that we do about hockey and 'The Hockey Theme'. It's like what the Super Bowl and football are to many Americans.

PEACE...

Great read and I love the pic at the end (the one Ed has up) with Neil smiling at his kit. He looks like a little kid on Christmas morning!

#19 :::waves back::: All is well.

"Meanwhile, Andy was looking into studios and soundstages, and had talked with Rush's recent coproducer (Snakes and Arrows), Nick Raskulinecz (Booujzhe). He was excited about the project, too, and having Booujzhe onboard to supervise the recording and mixing was a major boost to my confidence in the outcome"

That narrows some things down a bit....
#23 - Posted 2/9/10 @1:02PM by Rob [contact]

Interesting to notice that Neil's snare is different in the recording studio than the one in the video..(which is painted like the rest).

I guess he thought the fancy one did not sound good enough for the recording.

Excllent no. 14 Race Under Pressure! It will be one of the last few times they play The Incident in its entirety. I have a ticket for Londons Royal Albert Hall, also in September. GedHed is right.......strap yourself in!
#25 - Posted 2/9/10 @3:46PM by Aston Martin [contact]

This is off the subject, but I didn't know where else to post it. Neil states that it is pretty much a financial consideration not to record and release an album. RUSH makes money from touring, NOT from album sales! Well, they must make money from DVD sales, because they sure have released a lot of those lately. So why not combine the new music with some video content (maybe record themselves in the studio, or a soundstage doing the new material "live" and include an interview/documentary discussing the "making of...."), and release it that way. They could charge more to defray the overhead, have a physical product to market and make everyone happy.
#26 - Posted 2/9/10 @6:29PM by Rob [contact]

#25 Good points.....Seems to me any new music we see from these guys this year will probably be packaged in something just as you described....like another MVI.

No one is talking about this..but it seems the fellas are done with Atlantic. We kept hearing "one more release".....but will this happen?

Releasing new music with some kind of video material with Rounder records sounds like the direction the band is moving in.

or not. :)

Neil rules!
#28 - Posted 2/10/10 @12:01PM by mommy_of_zuzu [contact]

I always get tears in my eyes when I read his posts.
I'm so proud of him!

(sorry for the double post, hit the wrong button)
#29 - Posted 2/10/10 @2:26PM by Armeee [contact]

Sorry Neil,

You have a better chance of touring for "R50" then ever seeing the Leafs hoist the cup.

They haven't won since you were still watching HNIC on your uncle's B/W tv.

Just like my avatar says........ LEAFS SUCK!
#30 - Posted 2/10/10 @4:59PM by Kelly D [contact]

Damn, I missed this post, sort of. So well-written!

I love the Wayne's World references- that film is one of my all-time favorites. . . and as soon as Neil mentioned his "murderous rage" I somehow knew he'd talk about "Lock and Key"! Though I never quite grasped before now that "the lyrics of the individual songs shared the theme of 'instinct,' good and bad." I think it's great, too, that there are so many meanings to what Hold Your Fire refers.

Also, Neil, re: "(And isn't it funny that by then the band will have been represented in the Motorcycling Hall of Fame, the Hockey Hall of Fame, the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Songwriting Hall of Fame, and the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame-but not yet in the 'official' rock pantheon? Passing strange . . . )"- You're too good for them!

Aaaand, I love Neil's smile in the final shot. Perfect :)
