New website features interviews with Bands Like Rush

[Interview with the band Tiles - the Anvil of Progressive Rock]

Jeff Whittle and Chris Herin of TilesReader, Rush fan, and composer/performer Ben Sommer recently created a music discovery podcast and blog called Bands Like Rush where bands that have some kind of connection to Rush are interviewed. To kick off the site, Ben interviews 2 members of Detroit-based progressive rockers Tiles. Besides making great progressive rock music, Tiles has many connections with Rush. Original Rush producer Terry Brown has worked with Tiles since 1997's Fence the Clear, and Rush album artist Hugh Syme has done their last 3 album covers in addition to playing some keyboards on their latest album. Also on their latest album - Fly Paper - Alex Lifeson was a guest musician on the track Sacred & Mundane. I conducted a brief interview with guitarist Chris Herin and producer Terry Brown back when Fly Paper was released which you can check out in this post. Ben's interview is much more lengthy and in-depth; he talks with Chris and bassist Jeff Whittle for around 45 minutes about the band's history, their do-it-yourself approach to making music and running their business, why Tiles is known as the Anvil of Progressive Rock, and the pros and cons of being constantly compared to the band Rush. The interview also includes many amusing anecdotes and stories about their work with Terry, Hugh, and Alex Lifeson. Here's Chris discussing how he met Neil Peart at Terry Brown's 60th birthday party:

... So anyway, there were many luminaries from the Toronto music scene there. This was after Alex had recorded for us, so we were kind of hoping Alex would show up. But, he was already wherever Rush was was touring at the time. So Neil Peart comes walking in and ends up being Rush's representative at Terry's party. And, of course, that causes quite a stir because nobody expected him - they all kind of expected Alex and Geddy. But, Neil was the guy that was still left in town from rehearsals. He showed up, and hung out and I got to chit-chat with Neil. He's just a super nice guy too. You kind of see these stories about invading his space, but either he was kind of expecting it and well-prepared - he was very approachable. Afterward, I had passed him on a copy of Flypaper, and a little paperback book that I had picked up in North Carolina about nature, wind - something that a motorcycle guy might like. ...

You can read the entire interview or listen to the podcast at this link. Ben would also like everyone's feedback regarding the interview and suggestions on other bands like Rush he should interview.

Anvil- like, the band Anvil? Does that mean Tiles hasn't been able to catch a break? I would think having such Rush-related luminaries around them would count as a success ;)

Q: So, Tiles, what did Rush think about your song "Dungeons, Dragons, & Diddly-Deedly Doodly-Doo?"

A: They wouldn't tell us, Ben.

Q: Shame.

They could start by correctly spelling Neil's name right on the website.

Just my opinion...

I remember I once read in one of those Classic Rock Presents PROG magazines, that a band named The Treat was supposed to sound like Rush. That might be a idea to check out. But to be honest, I haven't really listened to them myself.
#9 - Posted 2/7/10 @2:35PM by bensommer [contact]

@Mr. K: Misspelling corrected! :)
@MajorSkalle: I will check them out - thanks
@Sirius: Wonder if I have the mojo yet to land interviews w/those high-rollers - but I'll try!

Oh...hello there world

Ben, just do what you gotta do. I guess you could ask many bands from all genres and all eras and they would all give some kind of tip of the hat to Rush.

"Bands Like Rush" was maybe meant to have a dual meaning? (bands that "like" Rush or bands that "are" like Rush?)... the latter would be a very uninteresting thing to me, bands being inspired by Rush is fine, but copycats get a life please. Dream Theater operates at the border if you ask me, I'm sure they love and respect Rush but playing so many covers, like The Camera Eye live was a bit of a 'smart#ss' thing to do if you ask me (oh, Rush does not want to play that song? Well no problem, we'll play it for you), real respect would be to leave it to Rush... let Rush susprise us, or not (that's fine too).

suRprise (typo, sorry)

The progressive label put on the band just seems to never go away.

THERE ARE NO OTHER BANDS LIKE RUSH...............PERIOD.

How about the Thrones? The Thrones is Joe Preston, once the bass player of the Melvins. He has been known to play Rush selections in an interesting way... most often The Trees. At the link below, you can hear him playing the Oracle. Also, if your interested, his Myspace page is the second link.

Many thanks to Ben and Ed for the interview opportunity & publicity. I can`t image what it was like for Ben to transcribe 90 minutes of 3-way `conversation` over a dodgey phone connection. Tedious, I can only imagine! Anyway, it`s discomforting to see how many of my thoughts go unfinished & how difficult it is to stay on track. I must improve my conversation skills ;-).

I do want to clarify my `Anvil` comment. All I meant was we`ve played the music we love for 17 years without having what you`d call a `breakthrough` in commercial success (career). I`m not saying we haven`t experienced some great things (we have) - or that we even deserve(d) more success. It was really just a comment about how long we`ve stuck together - and certainly there are thousands of other bands who`ve plugged away just like us.

In response to post #4: No one in Rush ever commented on Fly Paper, or the individual songs. I can`t be sure Alex or Neil even made it through the whole CD, they're busy guys. `Dragons, Dreams, and Daring Deeds` has unfortunately been slagged quite a bit. First for the title (which came from an elementary school`s `inspire your kids to read` motivational program) and second for the obvious nod to sonic Rushisms (some of it courtesy of Terry). The lyrics actually are an introvert`s (potential) perspective on feeling insecure & isolated - and where to `go` to find comfort - not the Dungeons & Dragons-type fantasy. Musically, the song is purposely inspired by Rush, Jethro Tull, and Kansas. Similar to what Steve Morse did with his two `Major Impacts` CDs. We were going to dedicate the song to these bands in the liner notes but got talked out of it. Maybe the song's message or our intentions didn`t translate well enough. But I don`t think it rips off any specific song, riff, or chord progression (?).

Well, this is running long enough. Thanks again to Ben and Ed for their time and effort!

#16....Hey Chris, Thanks for continuing to push music in a new direction and your loyalty to Rush! I like the complexity of your music, but have not given you guys a proper listening to yet.....I recently discovered Porcupine Tree through this site and saw them live last September! I am now hooked. Do you have any plans of bringing Tiles out to, or near, Portland, OR?

RUSH ON!
#18 - Posted 2/8/10 @4:14PM by drmike [contact]

Ben, if you want to try to contact Kim Mitchell of Max Webster for an interview--he is an afternoon DJ at Q107 in Toronto (and he still plays lots of Rush). You can probably contact him through their website at www.q107.com.
#19 - Posted 2/8/10 @6:33PM by bensommer [contact]

@Gabbo - no worries on the interview transcribing - I hire it out to a very cheap third-world service via eLance.com :)

@drmike - I will definitely contact Kim - looks like he's up to new things that will be even more interesting than just a "what's your Rush connection" discussion.

BTW - all should listen to The Treat - I did. Very cool music.
#20 - Posted 2/8/10 @8:09PM by Gabbo [contact]

Thanks Ben... I feel a little better knowing you didn`t spend an entire week away from your family in transcription / editing purgatory!

I also have to sing Kim`s praises. He`s like the John Coltrane of rock guitar: melodic but `out there,` and bursting with energy. Tiles also benefitted from Terry`s connections with Max Webster & got Kim to rip some solos on Capture the Flag (from Window Dressing) and the aforementioned Dragons, Dreams, and Daring Deeds. So, I guess we have quite a pattern of poaching Canada`s finest musicians to lend us a hand... ;-)

Oh Well???

RUSH ON! :-)
#22 - Posted 2/9/10 @3:53PM by Gabbo [contact]

Oops... sorry for the lack of a response JohnnyTRacer. Thanks for the compliments! Unfortunately, we have nothing on the horizon that will bring us to your part of the country - but we`ll keep our fingers crossed.

I`m a big PT fan too. In fact I spun Deadwing, FOABP, and the Incident at work today.
#23 - Posted 2/9/10 @6:34PM by JohnnyTRacer [contact]

Thanks for the response Gabbo. It's funny how we are all wired similarly as far as tastes in music are concerned. The core seems to be a deep appreciation for Rush and progressive rock in general. Playing live really gets your stuff out there and gets you noticed by the "commercial" masses, whereas prog fans will come across your material much sooner and develope a strong loyalty to your music as we don't really see much prog played on the radio at this time... :-( I am surprised that I have not heard of you until this past year or so and will keep an eye and ear out for your "West Coast USA" tour! :-) Keep those riffs coming and always:
