New Neil Peart interview with the Belleville Intelligencer
Posted at 9:53AM | comments (30)

[Back in the limelight]

UPDATE - 2/7@4:05PM: The article was also posted in today's Toronto Sun and several other papers.

UPDATE - 2/6@10:10AM: For some reason the article at the Belleville Intelligencer website has been taken down. No worries though, it also appeared in the St. Catharines Standard.

A new interview with Neil Peart appears in today's edition of the Belleville Intelligencer. They talk with Neil on a variety of subjects including his recent recording of The Hockey Theme for TSN, the outcome of the band's November meeting and Rush's next project:

... What's happening with Rush? I read on your blog that you were going to meet in November to discuss your future. What happened?

Well, in fact, we've just started working on new material. So we plan to get some writing and recording done. And we're considering doing everything this year -- maybe even a bit of touring. We are in action.

And we feel a bit liberated by the state of the music business. Even since 2006, when we started Snakes and Arrows, the album has become less significant in these times of iTunes and shuffle settings and whatnot. But perhaps we can take advantage of that and work in a whole different way. So we decided, when we did meet, that we're not constrained by the patterns of the past, where you spend a year writing and recording, and the next year touring. Anything's possible now; we can record a couple of songs and put them out and then go on tour if we want. So at this point, we're just embarking on writing, but keeping ourselves open to all those other possibilities. One of our early titles for this year was Research and Development. That's where we're at.

So you might start making music in smaller increments?

Or larger. I went to see a band called Porcupine Tree not long ago. And I was talking with (singer-guitarist) Steven Wilson. They just put out a 55- minute piece. That's a finger to the whole iTunes shuffle thing, and he intended it as such. And I thought, 'Yeah, that's another way of rebelling against it -- by just saying no.' There's too much lost in giving up the integrity of an album -- what it represents to you as a musician, and as a human being, for that matter. So I like that approach. That's very possible for a band like us. So there are no limitations; we might go big or we might go small.

Tell me about the new material -- are there songs, or is it just ideas at this point?

Oh, we just literally started. There's nothing to tell, really, except that we're doing it. ...

You can read the entire article online at this link. Thanks to RushFanForever for the heads up.

First!!!

Well this puts to shame all those nay-sayers who are complaining about the boys just releasing a few songs. We may end up with a 55 minute masterpiece instead!

Hot diggity damn!!!

They are not selling out at all. They are going to keep sticking it to the man. I can't wait to see what is brewing in their studio.
#6 - Posted 2/5/10 @10:11AM by DrummerSteve [contact]

I got blood flow to "areas" just thinking about the possibility of a long masterpiece and that they are getting ideas from PT. Can't wait to hear what's in store!!!
#7 - Posted 2/5/10 @10:15AM by skl183

Just started? I bet Nick R. is now out of the running as producer.

So where's that Nashville guy with his story about the grocery store encounter with Nick now? Dumbass.

I love that line...we are in action

Those were some real nice rat pellets if I ever saw some!

Cant wait to see how things pan out!!!

enjoy the snow if you live in Md and VA!

#7 -- I believe that Nick R. actually has been engaged as producer. I have this as first hand information from one of the members of the band with whom I (very) occasionally correspond via email. However, I have absolutely no further information beyond that tidbit, and no, I will not give out any email addresses, not matter how much you pay me.

Wow... they could put a few short songs on I-tunes and then release kind of a concept album or a long piece album... the options are almost unlimited. I love it!

Neil made a very good point that I never fully realized until now. I never thought how a lot of us use the shuffle settings on our mp3 players or iPod to skip around songs, which by doing that, you truly lose the masterpiece of all of the albums. On top of that, it goes to show that there are many people out there that will put only a few songs from an album on their players, compared to the whole album. I'll admit that despite I have every song from all of their albums, including a few bootlegs, I still use the shuffle to only listen to the songs I feel like listening to.

Rush's albums are meant to be heard in whole, not just one or two songs. I made that mistake early on with most of their albums. An example from it: the only song I listened to on Caress of Steel was Bastille Day. Until last year I never bothered to listen to The Necromancer or the Fountain of Lamneth. Now I can't miss listening to any of the songs from that album because of how brilliant it is.

Anyways, I have recently started listening to Porcupine Tree as well and I feel that they are doing everything right in the music business. I was thrilled to see that they will enjoy making long songs, such that can be seen from The Sky Moves Sideways album. When their newest album release, I was amazed to see the first song be just five minutes short of being an hour long epic.

I am very enthusiastic to see what Rush plans on doing after hearing that they seem inspired by Porcupine Tree. Should they put out a 55 minute song, 10 minute song or the average song length, I'm all for it.

Great points Rick4080 ^^^^

SO thrilled at the idea that Rush might take some inspiration from Porcupine Tree and go ambitious and epic again. I hope Alex and Ged feel the same way, and I hope it's not just a tease.

For all the influences Rush has picked up over the years - New Wave, Reggae, 80s pop, Grunge - the new prog rock of a band like Porcupine Tree would be a welcome influence and familiar return for Rush. Go for MORE, not LESS!!

Looking forward to whatever format the new music will be released, though I do hope it's a full cd (yes I still love going to stores or when needed ordering cds).
#14 - Posted 2/5/10 @11:31AM by scootertrashaz [contact]

cschnebe, I could not have said it better myself. I am really hooked on PT right now.. and would love if Rush would follow suit..
#15 - Posted 2/5/10 @11:35AM by cpb [contact]

Remember, it's not about a 55-minute "song". It's that you can couch a bunch of songs in a 55-minute TRACK, and thereby Thwart The Beast (i.e. "Shuffle".)

Which is what I've been saying in this forum for awhile now, because I'm awesome! (Har.)

It's like the old Jethro Tull stuff - except, here, Rush wouldn't HAVE to play all 55 minutes of whatever in sequence. It's purely a device, and a good one at that.
#16 - Posted 2/5/10 @11:40AM by ghost__rider [contact]

forthcoming, a 45 minute opus entitled, "2010: R&D".......
#17 - Posted 2/5/10 @11:43AM by GedHed [contact]

I love it. In that interview, my 2 most favorite bands evereverever. SW is influencing Rush! Ha! I *sooooo* love that! :D
#18 - Posted 2/5/10 @11:48AM by GedHed [contact]

scootertrashaz: Wilson is addictive! Are you going to any of the shows this spring? Or maybe RCMH in the fall? SW is so prolific. Have you explored any of his other projects?

Not a wonder in the world that these two bands influence one another. The best are drawn to the best. And Rush & PT (especially Wilson)...best in the biz. Period.

Am I the only one who is disappointed by the Neil's phrase, "maybe a bit of touring"? That doesn't sound very promising for 2010 at least! Some people have mentioned Summerfest in Milwaukee and I've heard rumours of commitments in South America, but I can't travel to either of those places. I live in a small town and will have to travel anyway, but not too far, please! On the positive side, it's good to hear Neil say that they are in action! I'm looking forward to some great new music!
#20 - Posted 2/5/10 @11:56AM by dbos_CX1 [contact]

Neil's into PT...he knows what's good in life.

For all Porcupine Tree fans in the NYC Metro area, tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10:00AM for the show on Friday, September 24 at Radio City Music Hall. See you there!

#19 You need to read between the lines a bit on this one. He also mentioned they wouldn't down-size the tour entourage. If they "get the machine cranked up again" they will do a minimum of 40-50 shows to make it worth their time.

Rush interviews are almost always open-ended. If they announced a tour with everything they've talked about it would be a 4 hour show opening with Tom Sawyer, then B-sides until break, come back with some new 5 minute songs, drum solo, long new epic piece, then finish with 30th anniversary PW straight through with a full orchestra....encore with the usual suspects.

The one certainty is that they are working and history tells us us they tour after writing. That you can take to the bank!
#23 - Posted 2/5/10 @1:34PM by timintey [contact]

Herm- now that show would be truly epic!!!
#24 - Posted 2/5/10 @7:39PM by sammo [contact]

The articles's been taken down. Anyone have a link?
#25 - Posted 2/5/10 @8:05PM by JediSushiChef [contact]

Yeah Sammo, I just tried it too and it's down. Rush is one of the reasons I got into PT in 2007, when I read somewhere that Neil recommended Fear of a Blank Planet when it came out...so Neil, if not the other guys, have been following the progress of PT and their work. The cookies Neil dropped in what I've been able to get out of the interview so far suggest that we're in for a real treat. I can see Rush perhaps doing what they did with the G/P songs in late '83 and road-testing some new material, if for no other reason to shake up the routine a bit...but I'm guessing the "ultimate product" of what they're working on will involve an album piece, if for no other reason because that's the nature of what they're fan base is into. It wouldn't surprise me if they released upcoming work as a 2 disc CD & DVD-A...hell, they should hire SW to do the mastering, like he does for King Crimson...after all, he's the best sound mix fella in the biz.
#26 - Posted 2/6/10 @12:53AM by GedHed [contact]

#25: ITA. Would dearly love to hear what SW would do with Rush's music! He is nothing short of amazing. I am addicted to whatever comes out of that man's head. Every time I hear something he's done for the first time, all I can think is, how can *everything* he does be this good???! But it is. Currently impatiently awaiting Cover Version VI & accompanying package to arrive at our house. Wanna' get the KC stuff too. But it will probably have to wait until after the tours. Cannot wait for the second US leg of the PT tour to begin--and of course the Rush tour as well! And the ultimate PT show--RCMH. That will be...beyond words. Can't wait! See you there, crusher87!

#20: Exactly.

#12: Definitely hope the guys will go for even more, not Even Less. ;)

#11: Rickenbacker4080: The Incident really is a special album. Have you seen them do it live? Magic!
#27 - Posted 2/6/10 @9:33AM by hitmewithmusic [contact]

What if they release one long song then tour with an orchestra!!! Man, I would love to see Porcupine Tree live!

Ed here is an alternate link to the article:

I think this one has a better chance of staying up for more than 24 hours than the other two.

I noticed in the St. Catharines reprint that the hockey subject near the end is not mentioned.

However the following question was only printed in the St. Catharines Standard and not the Intelligencer or the IfPress reprint.

Q. What are you going to do when she wants to listen to whatever the equivalent of Miley Cyrus is 15 years from now?

A.I hope I'll like it. Genuine, honest pop music, I've never had a problem with that. I respond to anything that's well done and doesn't pretend to be something other than what it is. I just hate the liars. The thing that offends me is when they're talking down to me, singing down to me.

That happens in rock just as much as pop. When you have bands bragging about their intelligence and then singing about sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll, then you know you're being condescended to.
#29 - Posted 2/6/10 @11:15AM by RushFanForever [contact]

I forgot to add the link for the IfPress reprint.

There will be a tour this summer. That is where the $$$ money is. Not hating or anything but that's a fact. A fact's a fact from Nome to Rome.
