Updates and other random Rush stuff
Posted at 12:52PM | comments (52)

Vancouver 2010 Winter OlympicsWe were hit with a big Rush rumor yesterday; that Rush will be performing at the 2010 Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Vancouver next Friday, February 12th. The word is that they'll be playing a version of YYZ as part of a larger performance showcasing Canadian music. The opening ceremony will air on NBC beginning at 7:30PM EST on Friday, February 12th. There's been no official confirmation of this or of who any of the performers will be; the organizers are being very tight-lipped about the whole affair.

Last week the tour date rumors started to fly when 105.7 WAPL out of Appleton, WI began announcing on the air that Rush will be playing Summerfest in Milwaukee on July 3rd. They even had a page up on their website promoting the event that has since been taken down. Apparently there was a mix-up and the station jumped the gun on the announcement. So I'm assuming that this information was likely accurate even though it was released prematurely.

As if the Winter Olympics and tour date rumors weren't enough, I've also heard a rumor that one of songs they are working on in the studio is an instrumental track titled The Unfinished Business. It's not clear whether this is in any way related to Rush's 6-minute instrumental The Main Monkey Business from Snakes & Arrows or if it's a completely new track. The original studio version of The Main Monkey Business was reportedly much longer than the version that appeared on the album.

Earlier this morning I posted a great new interview with Neil Peart that was in today's Belleville Intelligencer. They spoke with Neil on a variety of subjects including his recent recording of The Hockey Theme for TSN, the outcome of the band's November meeting and Rush's next project. Neil had a lot of interesting things to say regarding how Rush has adjusted its approach to recording and touring due to the ever-changing state of the music industry. He also mentions how he has garnered some inspiration from Porcupine Tree's latest effort The Incident which includes a 55-minute track. You can read the entire interview at this link. Neil was also recently interviewed for the February 2010 edition of At: Guitar Center magazine. Neil talks about his approach to drumming and writing lyrics, his kit, touring and his views on the current state of the music industry, reiterating much of what he said in the Intelligencer interview. You can read this interview at this link.

Earlier this week we learned that the March 2010 issue of The Walrus magazine contains a feature on Rush titled Living on a Lighted Stage: Are we finally ready to take Rush seriously. It's a 4-page feature that discusses all the attention that Rush has been garnering in recent years, and talks at length about the upcoming Rush documentary. It sounds like the author was given a sneak peek of the film and the article includes many quotes from filmmaker Sam Dunn. It also confirms what I'd mentioned last week; that the movie will contain footage of the Canadian Bandstand gig that Rush played at Laura Secord High School in St. Catharines, ON in 1974 with John Rutsey on drums. The article also talks about author Chris McDonald's recently released academic study of Rush - Rush, Rock Music and the Middle Class: Dreaming in Middletown, RushCon, and includes some remarks from Geddy himself. You can read the entire article on line at this link.

On Wednesday we learned some details regarding the upcoming Rush and Philosophy book that Open Court Publishing will be releasing as part of their popular Culture and Philosophy book series. The table of contents for the book - listing the authors and titles of all the essays it will contain along with section titles - was posted to co-editor Durrell Bowman's website at this link. The book will be divided into 4 sections containing 16 essays with a complete title of Rush and Philosophy: Always Hopeful, Yet Discontent. For all the details check out this post.

John at Cygnus-X1.net pointed me to this article posted at the website of ABC affiliate WJRT titled Subdivisions: Listening Room chief learns Rush holds the key to life. The article discusses Rush's Subdivisions and the band's impact on rock music over the years.

Rocker Joan Jett caused quite a flap last week when in several interviews she accused Rush of ridiculing her all-girl 70s band The Runaways when they opened for Rush back in 1977. Jett was making the interview rounds promoting the soon to be released biopic film The Runaways and made the following comments in this JAM! Music article:

... Their Order of Canada is probably safe. But Joan Jett says members of Rush were anything but polite Canucks when the Runaways opened for them in the 1970s. In the new film biopic about the band titled The Runaways, Jett (played by Kristen Stewart) is derided by an unidentified rock group they're opening for. She later retaliates by breaking into their dressing room and urinating on one of their guitars. Jett doesn't hesitate to identify the real-life inspiration for the scene. "Rush! They sat on the side of the stage and laughed at us," Jett says. "That sort of stuff pisses me off." ...

She also said the following in this HitFix.com article (thanks Ant):

... "And by the way, the group that refuses to give the Runaways a sound check in the movie is Rush", Jett said. ...

The Runaways actually attended a party in Rush's honor in December of 1976 as pictured here but didn't tour with them until a couple of months later in February of 1977 where the alleged incident(s) would have taken place.

Reader, Rush fan and life coach Tripp Lanier recently interviewed Esquire and ESPN Magazine's Chris Jones about his experiences with George Clooney, John McCain, various sports stars, etc. Since he's from Canada Lanier asked him if Rush was a great band or the greatest band. It gets a little bumpy at that point; apparently the answer is neither. You can listen to the interview at this link. The Rush bit is right at the end.

Online radio show The Used Bin recently aired an episode titled Bootlegs and a Babaloo. Host Joe Carona discussed how he snuck in backstage through the kitchen entrance at the Great Western Forum back in 1980 on the Permanent Waves Tour to meet Geddy Lee and how he obtained a bootleg recording of the show. He then played a rare live bootleg version of Hemispheres on air in its entirety. You can listen to the episode at this link. The Rush piece runs from about 49:30 to 1:12:10. Thanks to RushFanForever for the heads up. You may recall that I was a guest on The Used Bin this past August. The hosts are big Rush fans and often discuss the band on the program. Thanks to RushFanForever for the heads up.

The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is an annual music festival that has taken place outside Nashville, TN every summer since 2002. This year's official lineup will be announced next Tuesday, February 9th and the festival will take place June 10-13. Reader barboy2112 just noticed this Examiner.com article from back in September which speculates on the 2010 headliners. They include Rush on their list saying the following:

Progressive rock legend Rush has never played Bonnaroo, but their influence is heavily felt every year at the festival, with bands like Umphrey's McGee and Les Claypool listing them as primary influences. Therefore, it's not surprising that Rush is often cited by Bonnaroo fans on their short list of groups they'd like to see headline Bonnaroo. With guitarist Alex Lifeson announcing that Rush will begin work on a new studio album in fall of the year, 2010 seems like a perfect time for Rush to finally make their Bonnaroo appearance. The only thing that makes this slightly unlikely is that Rush hasn't had a radio hit since the 1980's, making them less popular than the typical Friday and Saturday headliners.
Odds of Appearing: 10:1

I doubt this will occur, but stranger things have happened.

Drum Workshop recently posted a video to their YouTube channel where COO John Good takes viewers on a tour of the Drum Workshop booth at the recent NAMM show including Neil Peart's NHL kit which he used for recording The Hockey Theme (thanks RushFanForever).

That's it for this week. Many thanks for all the birthday wishes (I turned 40 yesterday!) Have a great weekend!

I 'second' that, Hermy!

I'm gonna flip!

What are Rush NOT involved in lately? They're EVERYWHERE!

Sporks !_!

I've got goosebumps . . . this all sounds soooooooo good!
#4 - Posted 2/5/10 @1:09PM by Runkerry [contact]

I know some of you dont like Porcupine Tree, and some dont even like them being mentioned on this blog ; ) but Neil is obviously impressed, and if he cites them as an inspiration for whatever may come, we should be excited indeed!
#5 - Posted 2/5/10 @1:25PM by Lamb Saag [contact]

I am struck by how many of these news items are *upcoming* events, and it should remind us that not very long ago, people used to talk about Rush in the past tense.

Upcoming album, upcoming tour, upcoming documentary, upcoming appearance, upcoming book, upcoming award, etc etc... It's enough to make you nostalgic. Rush is dead? Long Live Rush!!
#6 - Posted 2/5/10 @1:42PM by Kelly D [contact]

This post was chock full of goodies. Oh my Gawd, all these rumors are making my little rat ears and whiskers twitch uncontrollably!
#7 - Posted 2/5/10 @1:46PM by Liverpool 78

Oh hello there Mr Lamb, hello there world...

What a great week it's been...so many things happening, the Vancouver rumour just tops everything.

A colleague of mine, aged about 35 years told me that he had been to a party last weekend and various Rush albums had been played; he remembered one with "a white eagle on it" and one that "went on for ever". I asked him what he thought of it and he said that he thought it was absolute s@@t. I had to chuckle to myself as I thought, not for the first time, 'you either get Rush or you don't'. I like this secret club that we all belong to :-)

Have a great weekend everyone.

the unfinished business related to the main monkey business.leave that thing alone related to where's my thing? pretty neat eh? the unfinished business without a shadow of a doubt peaks my curiosity indeed. what a band.
#11 - Posted 2/5/10 @2:16PM by mabhogO [contact]

WE NEED THIS!!
#12 - Posted 2/5/10 @2:24PM by skl183

The Unfinished Business? Just an extended Main Monkey track? I didn't like the original, so I highly doubt this new one will make any waves for me personally.
#13 - Posted 2/5/10 @2:42PM by Ghost Writer [contact]

I look at that Olympic logo and I think "Test for Echo" album art.

this makes sense to me...maybe we should have seen it coming. i love the exposure and looking forward to feb 12 now. it should be one cold yyz

#5 Lamb, you sound a bit excited about the 'upcoming events'!

Ed, as always... Thanks for keeping the juices flowing in the rumor mill and keeping that red star shinning for us! Hope you had an awesome birthday!

Now, on with 'The Unfinished Business' thats 'upcoming' for Lamb!
#17 - Posted 2/5/10 @8:40PM by main monkey business [contact]

The new instrumental may be another part of "The Main Monkey Business"?? You can't improve on perfection...just ask me! Main Monkey Business!! LMAO!!

I go along with Lamb Saag...just a few months ago the naysayers were going ballistic with the "has beens" and "they're finished" to the great line "just be thankful you saw them, because they won't tour again"....well naysayers....to quote a couple very popular movie lines...."They're back"!!!! and "They're Here"!!!!!! Man I can't wait!
#18 - Posted 2/5/10 @10:09PM by Lamb Saag [contact]

Yes, Spin, I am also excited about Neil's positive attitude toward most of these things, too. He's been giving a lot of press lately, and he sounds optimistic about the future of Rush. That's a good thing!

And what he's said about iTunes and shuffle features has got me thinking... plus your screen name and MMB's reminded me of something, so I have an idea.......

.
#19 - Posted 2/5/10 @10:10PM by Lamb Saag [contact]

Neil specifically mentioned iTunes, so of course he's familiar with its uses, as most of us probably are. I totally love it, because it's equal parts jukebox and database: you can manage so much information about your music collection, it's like having a fluid spreadsheet. Depending on how you've arranged your main iTunes window, you can sort your music data by various criteria. Some info is useful, some is trivial (date added, last played, etc). But you know this already.

In between this thread's relevant comments and after belated b-day wishes to Ed, I propose a fun little game to play here:

***
Open your iTunes main window and select so every Genre: Artist: Album of your music library is listed; then, enable the Play Count column, and sort it in descending order; list your Top Ten most-played songs, the artist, and the play count, and end with the total number of songs in your iTunes library.
***

Happy Birthday Ed!!! Viva Rush!!!
#22 - Posted 2/5/10 @11:17PM by AmyBrink [contact]

I understand the concept of the 55 minute track, but if you go to Amazon.com you'll see that regardless of the intentions, you can still purchase each individual song off of the album for $.99. So someone, whether the band authorized it or not, has undone the entire purpose of recording the album the way PT did.

snow falling in jersey and the body electric rocking the ipod on shuffle right now
#24 - Posted 2/6/10 @12:00AM by patrush

Thanks, Ed, for the great Friday updates, as usual. Nice work.
#25 - Posted 2/6/10 @3:41AM by theredstar [contact]

Ok, this is only slightly less far-fetched than those 9-11 conspiracy theories, but is it possible this Bonnaroo Festival and the expected February press release are in some way related? If the band is playing the festival, the band can't have them being the ones to announce the tour.
#26 - Posted 2/6/10 @7:56AM by ladlenitz [contact]

#23 Race,

Snow? You must be near the shore. Here in northeast NJ we were supposed to get 2-6 inches - nowhere near the blizzard predicted for south of us - but at 7:55 this morning the ground is bare. Missed us by THAT much!

Great news week for the Rush fan, tho!
#27 - Posted 2/6/10 @9:42AM by hitmewithmusic [contact]

Release a few songs, tour with orchestra!!!

Thanks for the update, Ed!

The Unfinished Business...just the name gives me chills.

Exciting times in our RUSH World.

Vancouver Olympic logo......Test for Echo Cover art.....Coincidence?!?!
#32 - Posted 2/6/10 @2:10PM by Rob [contact]

#27 Rush tours with an orchestra....I'll skip that.

Why wouldn't they incorporate an inukshuk with the Olympics in Canada......it's like a national symbol (in a touristy kind of way)
#33 - Posted 2/6/10 @3:24PM by Lamb Saag [contact]

Hmph, guess I should've asked what songs you wanna hear on a 'B-sides' tour; that always yields replies by the dozens...
#34 - Posted 2/6/10 @3:43PM by Rob [contact]

Sorry lamb!! My i-pod is currently under construction!

Time to go sled riding with the kids.
#35 - Posted 2/6/10 @5:32PM by primemover_3 [contact]

Great articles on Neil....thanks, Ed.

Everytime I read an article on Neil Peart, I catch something he says about drumming (in this case accentuating the vocals with drum parts) and recognize just how MUCH this guy has influenced my playing and approach to drumming, even when I don't consciously realize that I'm doing something "Peart-ish" . I was just talking with our singer in practice last week about how that alot of my drum parts are influenced by the way he sings. I must have subconsciously picked this up after 29 years of listening to RUSH and the Neil Peart style of drumming, and incorporated it into my own method without realizing it. Thanks again, Bubba! :) If you never stop learning, neither will I!! :)
#36 - Posted 2/6/10 @8:29PM by Spindrifter [contact]

#27 I'd have to agree with #32. But, in a sense, itd be kinda kewl. But, the thought of another person on stage other than the mighty trio is disturbing to me!

#31 Have you ever read Ghost Rider? Neil recalls his travels to British Columbia (cant remember where about) and where he saw the Inukshuk somewhere in Vancouver)

Lamb shall be dusting off his jean jacket with excitment!

Btw, Lamb, I dont use itunes. But, I'd have to get back to you on the B-sides.

Prime, perfektly said!

Hope that everyones having a great weekend. That goes out to those lurking from behind the curtains on stage left!
#37 - Posted 2/6/10 @8:29PM by glortiz [contact]

The news coming out from the Rush camp, especially from Neil is really exciting and confirms so much! I am stoked about the Opening Ceremonies at the Olympics next week, I am stoked about the new book, documentary, Rush going into the studio, the upcoming tour and that mysterious "unfinished business" song. The comment a few months ago about something with a "Natural Science" feel to it comes to mind. I wonder with excitement!

Here is a belated New Year's resolution. Time to stop with my naysayer's comments for now as things are certainly moving along! And Neil looks as if a fresh life has blossomed inside of him! It's amazing what can happen when a new life brings joy to yours! Good for him!

I'm stoked, excited about what is to come this year and I can't wait for events to unfold!

But, I will not stop saying this...

...our boys will not let us down!
#38 - Posted 2/6/10 @8:47PM by tygr [contact]

I think words like "integrity of the album" and "more is better" should relax those of us who had concerns after the earlier interview that Rush might do something radically different, especially relative to touring. Sounds like the next Rush show we see will be just that...a real Rush big-production rock show. If going to all digital releases of new material and dumping the traditional album format means the boys will be writing more new material than they otherwise would then I'm all for it, although I would certainly miss going to the local music store to buy the hardware.

At any rate, I'm stoked because THE BAND IS THE PROJECT NOW!!! woooooohoooooooo
#39 - Posted 2/6/10 @9:52PM by Rocinante [contact]

As for Rush playing the Olympics I HIGHLY doubt it.
#40 - Posted 2/6/10 @10:19PM by RushFanForever [contact]

# 36 Spindrifter, I found where Neil mentions the inukshuk in the 'Ghost Rider' book

'On the first day of my journey westward from Quebec, I saw a small inukshuk placed at the roadside, high on a rocky cut, and then another the second day, and again the third. Perhaps they had been assembled by another solitary traveler, a hitchhiker passing time until the next ride came along. A good omen, I like to think, although it gave me a wry smile to think about that definition, "in the likeness of a man".'

'The main logo of that Test For Echo tour was taken from the cover art of that album, which portrayed a humanoid icon of piled stones, a gigantic version of an Inuit inukshuk, which means 'in the likeness of a man'. My suggestion that we use this image has been inspired by that long ride up to Yellowknife the previous year, where I had seen one of those mystical looking cairns of rock overlooking the remote northern town, at the very edge of true wilderness. Knowing that these stone figures traditionally marked travel and hunting routes across the barren Arctic, I had been struck by the power of this human symbol in a hostile land.'
#41 - Posted 2/6/10 @11:26PM by RaceUnderPressure [contact]

with the way things are looking these days...i think the olympic rumor seems very plausible...if asked, their canadian pride will take over and they will represent their country with pride...maybe the event will even inspire a some lyrics from neil

Lamb - Sorry but I don't own an i-pod or I would play. I just have a very basic MP3 player which is all I need. My teenager has an i-pod that I'm sure will be handed down to me one day.

hermy - :::Waves hi::: How are you?

A belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY ED!!! Hope you had a great one and thanks for all that you do! CHEERS :D

Anybody else notice that the picture of Neil on the cover of the magazine has a similar layout of the cymbals as a picture of Gavin Harrison on his website? Only Gavin is lying down, not standing up. Pretty cool!

'Unfinished Business'... I like it! Is this a throw down of the gauntlet - me thinks? :P

I want to share with you this Olympic video commercial I saw last night. It gave me chills when I watched it! It really illustrates just how much hockey is a part of our Canadian culture. I was a tomboy as a kid and I loved playing floor hockey, street hockey and pond hockey with the boys! Girls ice hockey leagues started just around the time I started to like boys for other reasons than playing sports with them. It wasn't cool to be an adolescent girl playing ice hockey in that era like it is now.

P.S.> I just wanted to weigh in on Rush and Philosophy combined - nothing wrong with it. In fact it's GREAT, especially discussed over a nice cold beer! :D

PEACE...

I have three iPods (my classic iPod - the one I actually listen to on a regular basis, my iTouch - for Geddy pics and my iPhone). Recently did an entire re-install of my entire computer/iTunes, etc. so I have skewed results on my iTunes music listening. Here's a better snapshot (on LastFM - takes a couple of seconds to properly load, dunno why):

link

Since I began tracking my listening habits on LastFM since Dec 2007, I've almost listened to 30K Rush tunes! Ha ha ha!

link

Yes, ABBA is one of my top 10 artists! Ha ha ha ha! What can I say? Has a great beat and you can dance to it!

Hope everyone has a Geddy-licious weekend!!!

Love da Geddy! Miss da Geddy!

#44! Petie, your pics...blow me away. I swear, every one could be used for CD inserts. And those weren't even taken with either of your new cameras! Those dudes should hire you. You were born to be Rush's photographer. Excellent shots you share with us! Love 'em! :D

All I have is my classic ipod (60GB) & it's kinda' beat up. Couldn't live without it though. Not a scrobbler on last fm anymore, or I'd post mine. But even if I was, I think your tallies would dwarf mine considerably. You=The Uber Rush fan!

Can't wait for the opening of the Winter Olympics! That's gonna' rock *big* time--and, can't wait to hear The Unfinished Business!

Thank you so much for all the hard work you do, Ed. And I hope your birthday was a blast. :)

Hope all our east coasters are okay & aren't among those without power. It's fine to be snowed in & be able to at least blog, but no heat or electricity would be...pretty bad. Hope you all are okay out there!
#46 - Posted 2/7/10 @5:44PM by Spindrifter [contact]

Rush to play in the Olympics or not is or just isnt another rumor to add to their list of rumors over the years! But, if they did... That would be sweet!

#40 ~ Rushfanforever! Thanks for digging that up!

Did someone mention ABBA? Lol!
#47 - Posted 2/7/10 @10:33PM by katskahnne [contact]

I don't have an iPod (or any MP3 player) and my freakin' portable CD player bit the dust...not being able to have my music with me pretty well sucks, I hope I can get my hands on something before I have to go in for th8is stupid surgery or I'll be mental...

Saw the Super Bowl tonight and...as much as I dearly love the Who, I kept thinking "Yeah, very cool, but I'll see your Super Bowl and raise you Best. Olympic Opening Ceremonies. EVAH." >:-D

(Got my copies of the GC mag. Woohoo!)
#48 - Posted 2/7/10 @11:00PM by TommYYZ [contact]

I would love to believe Rush will open the olympics. However, there only reference to this rumor takes us back to RIAB only.
#49 - Posted 2/8/10 @12:38AM by GedHed [contact]

#47: I am not even a football fan, but I watched to see Roger. And he's *still* hot! And hooo-boy! He still has it! "The scream"!!!! Woah! {{{{{Roger Daltrey}}}}}
Even without Entwistle & Moon :'( (who would've *loved* it), that took me right back to 1976, my first ever Who concert--which, until I saw Rush in 2004, was the benchmark by which all other concerts were measured. After that day, The Who was bumped to #2. Since Porcupine Tree, bumped to #3, but in all cases, it's "winner by a nose." Glad I watched tonight. Hardly ever watch it. Could definitely count on one hand the times we've watched the Super Bowl since the one that *really* mattered--The Bears in '85. ;D

Called Anthem and they told me that Rush is not part of the Olympics. Unfortunately. But maybe that is what they gotta say....
#52 - Posted 2/12/10 @3:55PM by topleo

Sooo, okay...The bit about Joan Jett...? Other than Alex's misadventure in Florida- this is the first "negative" publicity I have ever seen associated with Rush. Yes she is off the radar now and pushing her movie- but I am surprised her comments did not include something like "that was along time ago- we're cool now"... Not assuming what she claims is true and it WAS in the 70's....just raised my eyebrow when I read that. I have always believed they have been regarded as gentleman and generally very cool down to earth guys...
Not to dwell on THAT.... Rush is collaborating again and all is well in the world, eh? :-)
