Rush 2010 tour and album update
Posted at 10:07PM | comments (51)

More information regarding Rush's 2010 tour and album plans is starting to trickle in. Before getting into the new details I thought I'd summarize what we know so far. Rush met sometime in November for a band meeting to discuss their plans for the upcoming year. Alex mentioned this impending meeting in a recently published interview with Guitar Aficianado from earlier this Fall, reiterating the fact that the band plans to be active in 2010. In the wake of this meeting, Geddy Lee was a special guest at the 25th annual Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) Miracle Day charity event in early December. According to fan reports, at the event Geddy was asked about Rush's plans for an album/tour and replied that Rush plans on entering the studio very, very soon and are hoping to then tour this summer. Since Geddy's comments were made, I've also heard some anonymous reports that a couple members of the Rush road crew have been casually contacted regarding the possibility of going out on tour next year. Adding fuel to the fire, several major radio stations (Chicago's WLUP, Boston's WZLX, Philadelphia's WYSP) recently ran contests to promote the release of the Working Men live compilation where listeners could qualify for a later drawing to win tickets to Rush's next tour. And last week we learned that the biggest FM radio station in Buenos Aires (FM Rock & Pop) had reported that a major local booking agency is working on bringing Rush to Argentina for the next tour. This all jibes with reports I've been hearing from inside sources that the band is currently in the process of nailing down dates for a 2010 tour to start in the late Spring, focusing particularly on first getting to places they missed on the last tour - like South America and Atlantic Canada.

Now for the new details. We've been wondering whether Snakes & Arrows producer Nick Raskulinecz will continue working with Rush for their next album. According to reader spitneye, it looks like this will indeed be the case. He claims to have run into Nick in a Tennessee (Nick is a Knoxville native) grocery store recently and here's what he reported in the comments on last week's Friday updates post:

I live in Franklin, Tennessee and my son and I just ran into Nick Raskulineez at a local grocery store. When I walked past him I immediately recognized him as the producer of the last album Snakes & Arrows so I asked him if he was getting ready to go into the studio with the boys. He looked up with a big smile on his face and said "yes" and said that he just got back from L.A. where they all met and worked out the details. He said that they will be in the studio next month. He said the new album will be like the last album and one of the songs will have a "Natural Science" feel to it.

I can't independently confirm all of this, but it sounds plausible and I tend to take spitneye at his word. Nick's remarks seem to indirectly suggest that the band already has several songs written, which would certainly make it easier for them to get a new album out the door in time for a Spring release. I can confirm via my other sources that Rush definitely do plan on entering the studio next month and that an official announcement regarding the tour will be coming in February. One other rumor I'm hearing is that the band is considering using the tour to somehow mark the 30th anniversary of Permanent Waves (the album was released on January 1, 1980) and may even play that album in its entirety in celebration. That's one rumor I really hope turns out to be true! I'm also hearing that the Rush documentary crew will be on hand to film the band in the studio and probably some of the initial dates on the tour, like they were hoping. So my guess is that the documentary won't be out until the summer at the earliest.

Best words ever heard in 2009: Rush Tour 2010!

Can't wait to savor the gorgeousness of da Geddy again!

Love da Geddy! Miss da Geddy!

Great news. My only concern is the quote that "the new album will be like the last album." As good as S&A is (from both a song and a sonic standpoint), I hope it's not like S&A Part 2. That would be un-Rush-like, to be honest.

That said, this news bit is a wonderful Christmas present. :)
#8 - Posted 12/23/09 @11:20PM by JesseZ [contact]

"Nick's remarks seem to indirectly suggest that the band already has several songs written..."

Which means when I ran into him at LAX a while back he wasn't pulling my leg...not that I thought he was.

He said "Wait til you hear the next one" and told me they'd already started working on it (next album). That was back in February.

Cool.

I think Rush will crank out something pretty quick. Like 3 months or so. They've gotten pretty efficient at composing and recording. I don't think Al and Ged have been just sitting around. Neil usually nails it in the first or second take. So I think we can expect 2010 to be a working year for Rush. I'm going to opening night wherever it is.
#10 - Posted 12/24/09 @12:08AM by TMMB [contact]

This now makes more sense (as many here including myself suspected) that they already had some material ready to record. This is the only way to crank out an album that fast and be ready to tour by spring.

PW in it's entirety? If this is true, what a tour this will be!
#11 - Posted 12/24/09 @12:09AM by dbos_CX1 [contact]

This is starting to get good...Permanant Waves in it's entirety? Bring it on! 2010 is looking better every day!
#12 - Posted 12/24/09 @12:46AM by katskahnne [contact]

AAAAAAAA!!!!! THIS IS NOT A DRILL!!! ::bounces off the walls:: Hey, SA and Canada first is actually good news for me - more time to scrape together concert funds! Oh, man...I am SO gonna celebrate '10 coming in!!!
#13 - Posted 12/24/09 @1:16AM by LanceTheShred [contact]

OMG! If they play Jacob's Ladder in concert........break out the defibrillator.

I am really having a hard time keeping my rat lips shut for my dear friends who know what I am talking about....
***Insert winky emoticon here***

BTW-JesseZ and spitneye-Your stories are so instrumental to the whole "what's next" puzzle. You both ROCK for being in the right place at the right time!
#14 - Posted 12/24/09 @1:23AM by speckbrot [contact]

Not Raskulinecz again. :( I don't want a new whatever. Snakes&Arrows is for me the worst album since Rush. It's Rush playing Rush and for me that's not enough. Vapor Trails was the right way, S&A is living in the past.

I know that nobody will agree with me. ;)
#15 - Posted 12/24/09 @4:15AM by Runkerry [contact]

Yeah,Jacobs Ladder again would be great, as would some of those early songs like Anthem, and Lakeside Park. Bring it on gents; wish them and all of you Rush nuts a very merry Christmas and superb 2010!
#16 - Posted 12/24/09 @4:48AM by Fiat

Terry Brown (sigh). That's all that needs to be sighed.
#17 - Posted 12/24/09 @4:50AM by Zyrannix [contact]

Speckbrot, don't be so sure. I tried to like S&A but just couldn't get into it. I hope they don't try to make S&A 2 as Rush always do their best when they move forward. As for PW in its entirety they played most of it on the last tour which was no bad thing but it would be nice to hear something different, even Alex has mentioned playing a tour where they do stuff they've not done or rarely done. That being said I do look forward to some new material and tour next year. One other possibility was the tour with orchestra which I would love (imagine Xanadu, 2112, Jacob's Ladder.....). Merry Christmas everyone
#18 - Posted 12/24/09 @7:39AM by Rob [contact]

If they are touring this summer....they are not recording a full album of new material. The timeline is unrealistic.
#19 - Posted 12/24/09 @7:42AM by Rob [contact]

I agree with Lance...Jacob's Ladder live again would be really cool.

The band has always said they are very proud of PW
#20 - Posted 12/24/09 @7:42AM by Runkerry [contact]

Yeah, I do love the idea of an orchestral Xanadu, 2112, and Jacobs Ladder. How about a Neil Peart solo accompanied by a live orchestra? Production would be a real challenge though I guess.

Id also like to hear Chemistry and Losing It from Signals live. And Virtuality from T4E would be awesome I think. Whatever happens, our South American counterparts are in for a real treat.
#21 - Posted 12/24/09 @7:54AM by MUSICinTheABsTrAcT [contact]

I know everyone's excited about Jacob's Ladder but I'm most excited about a new Rush studio CD and also about Different Strings LIVE !!!!

Whooooo hoo :>)
#22 - Posted 12/24/09 @8:29AM by Hemisferios [contact]

I'm not so sure they'll be back to our tiny island full of surf, Puerto Rico (85F outside!!!), but surely I will see them at least a couple of times in 2010. I already saw them in Charlotte, New York and Chicago, any suggestions? what city should I go next?

Happy holidays to everyone from HEMISFERIOS!!!
#23 - Posted 12/24/09 @8:42AM by dedlift [contact]

Fantastic news!

I'm sure glad I check this great site out on a regular basis, because this is ground zero for the latest in RUSH news. Thank you Ed.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I would absolutely love it if they played the entire Permanent Waves album. This is going to be a good year! Happy Holidays to all my Rush friends out there!
#25 - Posted 12/24/09 @9:31AM by rocinante5m [contact]

Well Merry Freakin Christmas!!!!!...Yeah Baby!!.....I'm with you MITA, Different Strings Live would be fantastic!!.....and of course the LADDER!!!!.....

S&A's the worst album since Rush??? HHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!! good one lol

hey ED, pretty good poll question, which album would you want to here in it's entirety......

I'm going with Hemispheres followed by AFTK, close second lol
#26 - Posted 12/24/09 @9:41AM by TheHonestMan [contact]

"I'm hearing is that the band is considering using the tour to somehow mark the 30th anniversary of Permanent Waves (the album was released on January 1, 1980) and may even play that album in its entirety in celebration."

*Picks jaw off the floor* Wow, Jacob's Ladder and Different Strings live would be incredible. This 2010 tour really seems to be coming together. My hands are literally shaking with excitement as I type this.

I have absolutely no problem waiting longer for the RUSH documentary because there is another tour and album.

Thank you Ed, everyone from RIAB who contributed information, and Ed's mysterious inside sources. You guys gave us the best holiday present ever!
#27 - Posted 12/24/09 @10:07AM by Xanadu_2112 [contact]

Really great news... it's not 2010 yet, and it already looks like it's going to be an amazing year!!!!!!
#28 - Posted 12/24/09 @10:10AM by Xanadu_2112 [contact]

Playing Permanent Waves Live seems very possible indeed. Spirit and Freewill are regulars on the set list. Entre Nous and Natural Science have both been performed live recently... so, just polish Jacob's (after being on the shelf for a while) and work on an arrangement for Different Strings, and it's done.
#29 - Posted 12/24/09 @10:24AM by Rushfreak [contact]

"Thankyou, thankyou. thankyou....its a wonderful Christmas gift"..
#30 - Posted 12/24/09 @10:27AM by Pat [contact]

It must be Christmas time, because nobody's doubting any of the rumors. Santa Claus is real! In any case, since plans change and Rush fans can get overexcited about small hints, I'm going to wait until I can hear a new album and judge for myself whether a song has a "Natural Science" feel; and I'll wait until the show to learn that they're playing Permanent Waves in its entirety. I think it's more likely that Dream Theater will play PW, but I'd sure be happy if Rush did it.

Merry Christmas, everybody!
#31 - Posted 12/24/09 @10:35AM by Kelly D [contact]

Damn! How'd I miss this thread! Glad I started saving back in the summer. I honestly don't care what Rush plays- they could play "Dog Years" over and over and I'd shell out to see that :D
#32 - Posted 12/24/09 @10:46AM by Funky Chicken [contact]

It all sounds a little fast to me but the pieces of the puzzle do seem to line up. PeW didn't take long to put together, and neither did AFTK. They don't really need to start from scratch with the "show"-it'd be fine with me if they recycle the lighting rig and some of the videos from the last tour. Just get back on the stage before Neil wakes up and realizes he's on the bus again.

Gimme the b-sides please...It's too bad that some of the songs I'd like to hear most are too much of a pain in the ass to deliver live-things like Lock and Key, Prime Mover, Presto. Keep Wind Blows, Far Cry, and Armor and Sword in the set please. Put Dreamline and Bones out to pasture. Where's My Thing or Limbo, anyone???

BTW-First post from a long time fan with 43 shows under my belt since 1980. I recognize some of you from other forums and other times.
#33 - Posted 12/24/09 @11:00AM by rushrulez [contact]

Atlantic Canada! Finally, they better come to Nova Scotia, so I can see them. My favorite band, have to tell my teacher and friend to start saving up for the gig.
#34 - Posted 12/24/09 @11:41AM by LedRush [contact]

I really liked Snakes and Arrows, but I really hope that Nick meant something different by saying the new album will be like the last. For better or worse, Rush has always innovated. At this stage in their career, I think it is fair to expect them to retread some ideas in some ways, but one would hope that they wouldn't retread on the last idea. Also, Snakes had way to many many mid-tempo songs that didn't go anywhere; its strength was its instrumentals and lead single.

Let's hope that when Nick was talking about sameness he was speaking about the process, and not the outcome.
#35 - Posted 12/24/09 @11:42AM by Jaybird [contact]

RUSH (and integrity) always gets the last laugh.

As Neil once said, PW is a poke at the English press.

By extension, it can stand for RUSH doing it their way.

And man, have they ever done it their way!!

Bring on PW!! RUSH Nation will rock and rule in 2010!!
#36 - Posted 12/24/09 @12:35PM by skl183

Canada/South America tour..well I guess the setlist will remain largely the same for South America as it was in 2008. There are few standards they haven't played since 2002 during the limited dates and they never came around for R30. But are they still interested in playing songs from skipped over albums like Counterparts, Test For Echo, Power Windows, Presto, and A Farewell to Kings? I guess some how working in Force 10 and also re-adding Entre Nous as well. Of the current songs to drop to make room: Main Monkey Business and Freewill.

Maybe they can the tour booked in Canada in less than 2 weeks and share a bill with Guns N Roses, who are over there from mid-January to right before the Olympics start in Vancouver in late February.
#37 - Posted 12/24/09 @12:49PM by PriestofSyrinx92 [contact]

I remember reading somewhere that Alex and Geddy would like to play their older stuff like and, I quote, The Camera Eye, and A Farewell to Kings. :D:D:D

But anywho I think the next Rush album is going to be called "Serum" according to Tom Servo...
#38 - Posted 12/24/09 @2:06PM by katskahnne [contact]

#32 - WMT, Limbo and Lock and Key...ohhhhhhh, yyyeeeaaahhhh! Right with ya there!

I'm so looking forward to hearing all of PW live! As has been noted, Jacob's Ladder and Different Strings are really all they'll have to "work up", and come on, this is RUSH we're talking about. This is like Lebron hitting a layup, not Shaq hitting a free throw...

2010's looking bright...
#39 - Posted 12/24/09 @2:59PM by Sirius [contact]

OMFG...Like..Yay?

Kelly D - Amen to Your Comment..Dog Years For 2010!!!

PW in its entirety?..ok..Sorry to say this but...Like How many times we heard TSOR,Freewill and Natural Science Live?..Entre Nous last tour was something tho..Butwe already have that feeling of "How the entire PW sounds live"..Dont Misunderstood me im really for the idea..but if it was for albums like Presto,T4E or Counterparts, now that would be Interresting..u know..give a 2nd chance to those wonderful albums..what I Mean is..We already know that PW would be too much Incredible hearing live(JL,DS simply wow)..But lemme say something..What the band did last tour bringing back Circumstances for example..I Never putted really some interests in that song..and after I heard the S&A Version..I Cant stop listening to it now(Both the S&A and Album Version)..so what if they could do that with other albums that didnt had some much attention..Presto Live?,Emotion Detector Live?,Cut To The Chase Live?..Come on..That would be splendid..but hey thats just my opinion..

AND BY GOD,ATLANTIC CANADA IN 2010 DONT LET US DOWN THIS TIME!

have a nice day!

The Dog *

@#39

Well said, they better not skip us again!
#41 - Posted 12/24/09 @5:19PM by cagster [contact]

I really don't care much about what they play, I love the live shows and would like to hear new music. I enjoyed S&A live, thats how I think it was meant to be listened to.. I know I would always include Spirit of the Radio, 2112, and of course Neils solo because of the energy they bring to the crowd. Can't wait to see what happens.
#42 - Posted 12/24/09 @10:18PM by presto123 [contact]

If what Nick R. said is true they are going into the studio in January. And by his words we can assume that a good portion of this is already written.(or at least some of it) This idea doesn't jive with what Neil posted on his site not very long ago.(maybe a month or two?) He said they had no idea what direction the band was going and may even include an orchestra or individual tracks. So either Neil was pulling our legs OR the band was busy writing a record without telling Neil about it? They didn't meet until late November so how could Nick say that they already have tracks ready? All these timelines aren't adding up. Your thoughts or ideas????
#43 - Posted 12/25/09 @10:47AM by main monkey business [contact]

To those who are complaining again...It's Christmas, and I won't call anyone out..everyone has their favorite Rush album and the one that is their least favorite..but there's no need to voice the slams on Snakes and Arrows...Myself..I think musically and engineering-wise...it's one of their best in the last several years. I was always told if you cannot say anything nice...don't say anything at all. This blog really isn't meant for naysayers and negativity..it's okay to like something or dislike it and voice an opinion...but the bashing is getting old. Merry Christmas to you just the same!
#44 - Posted 12/25/09 @11:40AM by skl183

if a new album is coming out soon in less than 4 months and they enter the studio next month it is a world record for this band. I doubt the album is out by Spring 2010 or even this year. JANUARY 2011 AT EARLIEST. And Natural Science sound-alike? I wouldn't put it pass them but they haven't recorded a song past the 10 minute mark since Camera Eye, so again have to hold the disbelief back there.

Also, P. Wavss in its entirety next year? This is the same band that has continously denied us Camera Eye and Jacob's Ladder in the last 7 years years, so I highly doubt they'd do this. Different Strings and Jacob's ladders is all thats left for me to hear! Maybe they'll play Natural Science the same way it was on the album..on second thought. nah...
#45 - Posted 12/28/09 @9:50AM by scottc [contact]

I take these rumors with a huge grain of salt..
#46 - Posted 12/29/09 @1:55AM by lavilla2112 [contact]

Gonna have to fly down to the lower 48 for Muse AND Rush. Well there is my new years wish right there!!! Here we go 2010!!
#47 - Posted 12/29/09 @2:05AM by lavilla2112 [contact]

#39 Amen! Presto is the only song off Retrspetive that they haven't played live. They need to start giving more chances to their "B" material. They are commercially successful enough that they do not have to keep playing their commercial friendly tunes. Bringing Circumstances and Entre Nous was awesome. Now do a lot more of it!!!!
#48 - Posted 12/30/09 @3:38AM by xanadurush [contact]

Hey there rush friends - hope you had a wonderful holiday! We're going to follow them around again a bit on this tour - Argentina is probably out - even tho my uncle would love for us to visit. I'm thinking more of a driving & camping (gorge) type trip!!! One disappointing thing I read - last album??? NOOOOOO way. I can even imagine how the talent suddenly gets put on hold for good? I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Happy New Year everyone!! The piggy bank is officially broken open and waiting!! hahaha
#49 - Posted 12/30/09 @9:14AM by Sign_of_Eth [contact]

Think about this: If you were Rush and this was your last tour ever, what songs would you want to be on the setlist? How would you immortalize your last set list EVER? I have a hard time believing that they would want to use up 6 song slots for PeW, when they did 4 of them on their last tour!

But if they do play PeW in its entirety, maybe Natural Science segues into Natural Science 2 from the new album :)

I know it will never happen, but I wish they would play Signals in its entirety!
#50 - Posted 12/30/09 @12:32PM by UberDelegate86 [contact]

All of Permanent Waves? Yes please! Just play Circumstances, Making Memories, Lessons, Sweet Miracle and Presto and I'll be the happiest little Rush fan on the planet!
#51 - Posted 1/5/10 @1:34PM by FavHeadache09 [contact]

hey all i got a few things to say, big time but young rush fan :D, when they made theyre 08 tour i knew that theyd have something from the 90s, ghost of a chance, which was great, unforunitly i never saw them in 08 just 07, and 2nd PeW is a great album and Jacob's Ladder is one of my favorite songs, no lie! the only other live version that i have is Exit...Stage Left and yet its still very good :D. third thing, Snakes & Arrows was a great album and rush producing someone different but somewhat like it wont be a bad thing, maybe another intrus? Alex's Acosutic Guitars where wonderful in Larger Bowl, Working them Angels and MMB, great songs :D. so yes i hope for a 2'10 tour me and my dad [whose seen them 9 times] will be trilled! lets hope for a great album this time around and a great tour.

MY WISHES:
Medley of Cgynus 1 & 2
The Big Money
Lock & Key/Prime Mover
Stick It Out
Limbo/Test For Echo
Summertime Blues
and anotehr all time favorite: Bravest Face [cuz they havent played it live yet, sadly :(]

Happy New Year Rush Fans, Take Care :)
