Posted at 7:10AM | comments (61)

[Rush, Rita MacNeil win music industry awards]

UPDATE - 11/24@10:16AM: A few photos of the event are online at this link. Alex and Geddy were in attendance and I included the photos of them. Just click on the thumbnails. Thanks to lilvictory for the heads up.

The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN) is the Canadian copyright collective for the right to communicate to the public and publicly perform musical works. The organization held its 20th annual anglophone awards ceremony last night in Toronto and Rush was honored with the international achievement award. For details go to this CBC news article. Thanks to Power Windows for the heads up.

Yay Rush! I love VT era photo of Rush the CBC picked for the article. Very Geddy-licious, indeed!! I do love to see all of the fellas in Rush smile but what I'd love more is to see them smile IRL on tour real soon! **tee hee hee**

Love da Geddy! Miss da Geddy!

Is it just me or are Alex and Ged looking a little Statler and Waldorf in the first pic? :)

I must say that Alex and Geddy look very Dapper!
#8 - Posted 11/24/09 @12:55PM by axe

Didn't Geddy have anything else to wear than that Presto-era suit? Ewww

::SQUEEEEEEEEEEE::

I can't help it. They are Teh Kyoot. The Kings of OhHELLYeah. HawtCon 1...

::ahem:: yeah, now that I've got *that* out of my system (tss, as if...)...Congratulations, RUSH!! You definitely deserve the honor, and we know many more will be coming!

geddy always wears jackets that are a little to large. Shirts are tight, jackets are too large.?
#13 - Posted 11/24/09 @5:05PM by spiralarray [contact]

Eata McMeal? haha! God ,that was funny. I've seen Rita McNeal a few times on CBC, so I get the joke.
Don't really get the "Presto -era suit" comment, though. Looks like a pretty new suit,to me. Personally, I think Geddy has the best fashion sense of the 3 of them. Neil needs to lose that damn african cap he's been wearing for the last 15-20 years or so.
#14 - Posted 11/24/09 @6:44PM by analogkid7 [contact]

I do really have to point out something that's been LITERALLY boiling inside me. 56 YEARS OLD!!!!! Jesus! And they still look damn good! As steven wilson says; "After a while, you realize Time Flies, and the best thing that you can do is take whatever comes to you as Time Flies!" Heck yea. :)

I also have to add just one more thing. Please tell me that this would make a freaking awesome supergruoup!

Alex Lifeson- Guitars, Backing vocals

Gavin Harrison- Drums

Geddy Lee- Bass, Lead Vocals

Steven Wilson- Lead and Backing vocals, piano, rhythm guitar

Richard Barbieri- Keyboard, Synthesizers

OMG! "THAT IS SO WRONG" ALERT
******************************

Analogkid! Dude! Even though I think your thoughts are mind blowing and that combo would probably start a Armageddon of sorts in the world of music, I cannot even fathom or imagine Geddy and Alex performing without Neil.

Your unpleasant family just smashed up my Rush car..........;)
#16 - Posted 11/24/09 @7:23PM by Archimer [contact]

I'm still baffled by how much Neil Peart keeps to himself. He appears to not have been present...? (Then again, he's got that new kid going on.)

I will consider myself a very lucky person if I age half as gracefully as the members of Rush.
#17 - Posted 11/24/09 @7:39PM by JohnnyTRacer [contact]

A big congrats to our guys in Rush! I am ready to hear the news of both Alex and Geddy having their "hair blowin in an open car" as they are driving over to Neil's house for their meeting in LA....... :-)

RUSH ON!
#18 - Posted 11/24/09 @7:44PM by GreeneWolfe [contact]

Wow!! Geddy is pleasantly plump!! Or is it me just thinking about my turkey!!!
#19 - Posted 11/24/09 @8:16PM by spiralarray [contact]

Archimer....Thats pretty much the way Rush have done things with most situations or occasions like the SOCAN award. Alex and/or Geddy seem to take care of most of those things. Neil also is in Santa Monica now, where as Geddy and Alex still live around Toronto. Neil seems immersed in his own non- Rush world/life in California.

Analogkid7... Never heard of the other musicians in your super group idea. I will google them later.
#20 - Posted 11/24/09 @8:45PM by Toronto Writer [contact]

The My Name is Earl episode with "Working Man" is on the Comedy Network in Canada right now. Sweet. PS - I love how Alex, Geddy and Neil always have their Order of Canada pins on at these events. Proudly Canadian.
#21 - Posted 11/24/09 @10:37PM by analogkid7 [contact]

#15- Lance, How about Neil makes a guest appearance on each album they do, where he plays drums on 6 of the 12 tracks. that would be equal. :)

When I'm down, I Drive the Rush Hearse. :)
#22 - Posted 11/24/09 @10:40PM by analogkid7 [contact]

#19- Hey man, those other guys are in the band Porcupine Tree. Alex made a guest appearance on their Fear Of A Blank Planet album. Oh, and trust me, you'll be blown away by Gavin Harrison's drumming. :)
#23 - Posted 11/24/09 @10:41PM by PetieLee [contact]

Oooooh la la! I visited RIAB before the morning update with photos of the event. I think my heart just exploded! Geddy is so friggin' gorgeous in these pics, I can hardly breathe!

Geddy and Alex look fabulous! Geddy's hair looks great! I think Geddy looks amazing in that jacket. The tie he's wearing is smashing!! Hot stuff! *Petie continues to fan herself...*

Somebody get me a doctor! WOW!!!! *tee hee hee*

"Open Car" - OH YEAH!!!! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Okay, I'm done!

LOVE da Geddy! MISS da Geddy!
#24 - Posted 11/25/09 @2:01AM by spiralarray [contact]

#22- Oh, I know of the band Porcupine Tree. I heard a few songs of theirs. I guess Neil is a fan of theirs, from what I read somewhere. Personally, I could see Alex and Geddy doing something either seperately or together, with other musicians. My favourite headache and Victor were both great (my preference would be My favourite headache though). I really think Geddy and Alex showed another side of their musical selves...in their "solo" works.
#25 - Posted 11/25/09 @2:52AM by drivenbyrush [contact]

Congratulations to Rush for their award! As said earlier, they deserve it.
I think Alex and Geddy both look real snazzy in their suits. :~D
#26 - Posted 11/25/09 @3:42AM by GedHed [contact]

Great news for the guys! And they're looking darned good, too!

#15: Sir Lance: I understand what you mean, but I think analogkid7's idea would be a *very* interesting lineup for a few shows while Neil's home with the new young'un (although my heart would sure go out to poor Colin)! I'd pay a pretty penny to see that. But my *real* dream concert ticket would be any/all shows in a Rush/PT tour--full set lists for both bands, of course. The two best bands on the planet (not to mention *major* hotness on the stage). Who could 'Resist' that? If it ever happened, I might just lose my mind, apply for numerous credit cards, and become a nomad for the duration. Petie, I think we could wind up in trouble at those shows! lol!
#27 - Posted 11/25/09 @7:05AM by mrdriven [contact]

I see where analogkid is going and the thought process rocks! but i gotta agree with Shred...Neil is the engine that drives the train!

I was blown away by PT in Baltimore and the next night in Philly - Gavin Harrison is awesome as was their bassist. John Wesley plays some great guitar and his vocals added another dimension to the music. And Steven Wilson is a genius and a great musician - the band looked like they were having so much fun up there and when you close your eyes it sounds just like the album (which is sooo true of the Rush shows)

I like GedHed's idea...THAT would be friggin amazing! And don't worry GedHed...i'll keep you and Petie out of trouble...as long as we're not in Ohio...trouble always seems to find me there ;)

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and Rush On!
#28 - Posted 11/25/09 @9:13AM by LanceTheShred [contact]

How would one know that when I "crawled out of the wreckage" of "Nocturne" this AM that there would be comments and PT references from my "Counterparts?" ;)

#21 Analogkid-Not a bad compromise but a Rush song without Neil would be a listening and visual bummer. Now, a few originals with this line-up would make December 2012 look like a walk in the "Lakeside Park"!

#24 spiralman-I was introduced to PT a few years back right here on this blog. I have found and refound many bands thanks to folks like dedlift, unktehila, GedHed, RocMan and so many others. They are now my 2nd fav band.

**Throws sheet of Brawny at Petie**
Dear lord girlfriend! I am surprised it took you that long to respond to the pics. You and LovLee would have a hayday playing tug of war with a Geddy in a Suit Jacket Soap on a Rope! :))

#26 GedHed-"If it ever happened, I might just lose my mind, apply for numerous credit cards, and become a nomad for the duration." My office chair flipped over and I have coffee all over me! OMG that was funny :))

#27 Driven-"I was blown away by PT in Baltimore and the next night in Philly". Absolutely brother. What makes these shows even better is the enjoyment of hanging out with folks you dig. FTR-I just recently budgeted a 6% increase for the Rush fund on my business Excel spreadsheet 2010. A jump in pellet consumption one would say. Bring on the rat festivities!

BTW-Archimer, I love your funny little sketches and artwork. Very unique you are!
#29 - Posted 11/25/09 @10:07AM by spiralarray [contact]

hey guys...
what about Alex and Geddy working with Ben Mink, who they have worked with in the past and I can't recall his name, but the drummer that played on Alex's 'Victor' album?
Porcupine tree is great ,but for some reason I could see Alex and Geddy working with more familiar people or people they know well. I know Geddy and Ben Mink are very good friends. Obviously this is all hypothetical.haha. Just a thought.
My gut tells me, if Alex and Geddy did anything together, but without Neil....they would probably work with close friends for the most part. Also, what about Porcupine Tree....is that band still in tact? Would the drummer be free to work with others, anyway?
There's many possibilities for something like this, but this is what I hope happens, in the event things don't really move forward with Rush. I would love to see Geddy and or Alex do some more work (musically).
#30 - Posted 11/25/09 @1:02PM by analogkid7 [contact]

#28- Good point. But I thought that the supergroup could simply just have 2 drummers. :) Neil plays have of the song, Gavin plays the other half, and then in the next song, they both play exactly at the same time. With a drum battle in the middle! :)

Sullen and bored, the Rush kids play, and in this way they wish away each day! :) :) :)
#31 - Posted 11/25/09 @2:01PM by TMMB [contact]

Matt Cameron is a hell of a drummer (Played on Geddy's record) but from what I've heard he's not really a Rush fan. How can anyone consider themselves a serious musician and NOT dig Rush? I suppose I'm a little bias...
#32 - Posted 11/25/09 @2:35PM by spiralarray [contact]

#30, -
Drum battle? haha. Interesting.
#31-
Yeah,Matt Cameron is a great drummer. I have no idea if he is involved in anything else. I think at some point he was playing with Pearl Jam. I did see a short clip of him talking about working on My favoutite headache with Geddy and he seemed to respect Geddy but , like you said, he didn't seem like he was a fan. He said something like "my friends think it's cool Im playing with Geddy Lee" or something to that effect.
I just think (my opinion anyway) that if Geddy and Alex do any kind of future work together or "solo" it would be along the lines of how they both did it in the past (Victor / My favourite headache) and they would have very qualified musicians with them, but not "big name" artists. Personally, I like that approach anyway. Less "flashy" crap. That's always been one of the things I like about Rush. They aren't all hype and flashy garbage, like some bands.
Oh..another drummer who would fill that role really well....(not sure who has heard of these guys) ...would be Jeff Burrows from the Tea Party. They broke up and he is now a radio DJ here in Windsor,Ont. He's also a RUSH fan!! He was sitting on the tunnel bus right in front of me and my son, when we went to see Rush in 2008 at Joe Louis arena in Detroit. He's the drummer that played with Alex and Geddy on that "I fought the law and the law won" song they did for the Trailer park boys movie.
#33 - Posted 11/25/09 @3:25PM by GreeneWolfe [contact]

THANK GOD PHISH IS BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!!
#34 - Posted 11/25/09 @3:34PM by GedHed [contact]

#29: I think Rush is familiar enough with PT. Alex played on Anesthetize on PT's FOABP. And yes, PT is still together. They're on tour right now--they just put out an excellent album which was released in September. They're playing Lyon, France tonight& they have tour dates scheduled clear 'til February. There'll be a second U.S. leg, according to SW (Steven Wilson--he's their front man/main writer/producer, btw)...
#35 - Posted 11/25/09 @3:41PM by GedHed [contact]

Oh, and #29: Before I forget...Neil was at some of the PT shows on the west coast this fall...
#36 - Posted 11/25/09 @3:46PM by spiralarray [contact]

#34- Im definitely interested Porcupine Tree . Have only heard a few of their songs at this point. I realize Rush is familiar with them and I had heard they have done a few things together, but if Porcupine Tree is still an in- tact band..how could it be suggested that if Alex and Geddy formed a group without Neil, anyone from Porcupine Tree would be part of it? Unless it was purely stupio work, or the guys from Porcupine Tree were to be in 2 different bands.
#37 - Posted 11/25/09 @3:57PM by Fiat

The latest PT is a bit of a disappointment. I find it to be more than a bit on the boring side. I was psyched but they just didn't seem to hit the mark this time around.
#38 - Posted 11/25/09 @5:07PM by GedHed [contact]

:::helps Lance up off the floor & hands him a towel::: {{{Lance}}} lol!

#36: First, regarding PT as an intact band, there's no "if". Secondly, the guys in PT work with many different bands. SW does work with No-Man (just released a new DVD/CD/doc DVD), Blackfield (just re-released a live DVD with a CD), and he's involved in other bands as well. John Wesley is a tour member (has his own solo career). Gavin is still involved with King Crimson (SW just worked with them as well on remixing), Richard Barbieri still has his side projects, as does Colin. Side projects are routine with Wilson & all members of PT--Wilson being the most prolific.
#39 - Posted 11/25/09 @5:26PM by GedHed [contact]

#37: To each his own, but I've sure not heard that opinion from anyone else. I hope you'll check them out when they come back around in the spring. It's a show not to be missed, and tickets are extremely reasonable. For little more than the price of the CD itself (regular version) you can see show you will not forget. And at the shows we saw, it was GA. Personally, I've been addicted to the new CD. Wilson is nothing short of amazing. And The Incident live is stunning. I will *never* forget standing front row at that microphone in Chicago, looking up at Wilson as he spun his magic. No one can create a mood--on stage *or* in the studio--like that man. Pure artistic genius. And the premiere of RML...unforgettable. To see the entire 55 min. of The Incident performed was a rare opportunity. I doubt they'll do it in its entirety again after this tour. Gives me chills just thinking about it. PT is the best kept secret out there, IMHO. I plan to see them perform this masterpiece as many times as possible when they come around again. Wouldn't miss it for anything.
#40 - Posted 11/25/09 @6:25PM by jediyyz [contact]

Just dropped in as always to check out the latest Rush talk and...did I go to the wrong site?! Porcupine Tree chat room perhaps?! I agree with Fiat #37...as far as a super group goes...I'll stick with Alex, Neil, and Geddy...solo CDs are fine but nothing can touch the real thing..."Seems to me it's Chemistry"
#41 - Posted 11/25/09 @6:58PM by analogkid7 [contact]

#39- That's awesome! I missed out when they came to San Francisco, but if they come again on the 2nd leg, I'm so going. By the way, how did the song Circle of Manias sound? There's no videos from what I've seen on youtube of that song live, and I personally think that song is freaking awesome, so, how does it sound, and do you remember like the lights or anything? :) Thanks.
#42 - Posted 11/25/09 @8:19PM by jediyyz [contact]

And in the world of Rush.....
#43 - Posted 11/25/09 @9:00PM by Rob

#42 lol...I know of a supergroup already.
#44 - Posted 11/25/09 @9:54PM by Kelly D [contact]

Why can't we talk of PT? They're way more related to Rush than a lot of the sports team talk that dominates the board over the fall and winter. And, for Gawd's sake, if we're civil and it's somewhat related to Rush, why bother getting uppity? Be thankful that we're all here, in light of the American holiday ;)
#45 - Posted 11/25/09 @11:15PM by jediyyz [contact]

"Why are we here....because of Rush...Roll the Bones! The one band that has the single most connections to Rush is Dream Theater, hands down (and I could expand on all the connections)...but this is a Rush site! I don't feel I'm being "uppity"...if I wanted to discuss PT, then I would go to PTIAB, if there even is such a site!
#46 - Posted 11/26/09 @12:20AM by LanceTheShred [contact]

May I please quote the Colbert "name of your next album" reference once again? What a freakin crock.........

#45 JediMallCopYYZ-You would assume that a musician like yourself could appreciate the chatter of Rush influenced instrumental genius and vise versa. Stay away from the tryptophan tomorrow brother. You already fell asleep on the couch.

#41 analogkid-If you want to know about how incredible Circle of Manias was in concert, maybe we can GPS a meeting place somewhere in the middle of a Oklahoma corn field crop circle and talk bro!

Ed-I'll save you the trip on this one **Comment Deleted**

Hey! Party time, you rats! :)
#48 - Posted 11/26/09 @12:41AM by primemover_3 [contact]

That's right! Big Daddy Neil lives in CALIFORNIA, baby. :D
#49 - Posted 11/26/09 @1:10AM by GedHed [contact]

#41: It's great live. *So* much energy! I wouldn't really say there's any extra special light show with TI. There's a screen behind the band, as is pretty typical for them. It's really pretty tough to put into words, actually. It's just the piece as a *whole* which is a solid knock out. One particular highlight for me, though (among *many* others), was in the second set in Baltimore. And that was BTC!!! Oh man..you *have* to see that live. Woah. Intense. If I were you, analogkid7...I would try my best to see at least 2 or 3 shows on the next leg. You're in CA, so that shouldn't be too tough to do. They do change the setlist up a bit in the second set, so if you see more than one show, you'll get more of the older stuff. But honestly, it doesn't matter what they do, IMHO. I'd be happy with anything. But that's just me. I'm the same way with Rush. Sure, I have my wish list, but just to see people like that up on a stage is a gift to be treasured!
#50 - Posted 11/26/09 @8:40AM by PetieLee [contact]

PT rocks! Steven Wilson is an amazing musician/songwriter/lyricist/producer! I'm so very thrilled I got to see PT in concert as many times as I did for The Incident and when they return from the European leg of their current tour, I will be there to see them again!!!

I personally can't wait for Rush to record and release new material because THAT is well worth waiting for!

In RUSH news: Geddy's hot!!!

link

Of course we all know THAT wasn't breaking news...he's BEEN so smokin' hot for so very long! Woot!

Happy Thanksgiving to all RIAB Rats!

Doesn't get any better than Rush live onstage (with Neil Peart smiling to boot)!!

#46 Wow Shred...I never personally attacked anybody! Nor did I resort to name calling! I realize I'm not in your exclusive circle of "Rats"(namely due to distance), but even so, I have been on this site commenting and following long before most of you! I merely stated that quite a number of us come here for Rush discussions...I'm sure such a place exists for those interested in PT. In case you haven't noticed, a lot of long time contributors are either seldom seen or gone altogether! I could list many names but I will "Resist". Even though you felt it necessary to slam me, I respect your allegiance to Rush and wish you, your family, and everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!!

p.s. For the record Shred, the band I play drums in, "Vital Signs" , son on guitar. daughter on bass and vocals...is a Rush inspired band not a tribute band. We play all originals and only an occasional Rush tune, "Working Man" being probably our best. We did play a Rush medley and yes we included songs from Presto!

Endlessly Rocking!!
#54 - Posted 11/26/09 @1:10PM by analogkid7 [contact]

#53- Jediyyz, I know that RIAB doesn't allow personal attacks on anybody, but I have to tell you a few things. First of all, I understand the fact that you've been on here for a long time, but I'm starting to think that the only band or artist of any kind in history that you like is, well, Rush. Also, I understand that this is indeed a Rush fansite, but the fact is, another thing about this site is that it will get you into other bands that are similar to Rush, but are NOT Rush by telling what the members of the band are listening to and admire. Sometimes they're good, sometimes they're bad (but usually VERY good). Another thing, I'd give PT another chance. I'd recommend you listen to the entire 'Deadwing' album before saying anything negative about them.
#55 - Posted 11/26/09 @1:28PM by Rob

With the lack of anything new with Rush, I don't mind if people talk about other bands. But analogkid7 needs to read jedi's comments again. He NEVER said ANYTHING negative about PT. All I got out of jedi's comments was his dis-taste of all the PT talk....just expressing his opinion. What happens? he gets attacked for it. Isn't he entitled to an opinion? Truth is-the PT/supergroup discussion has chewed up a lot of space on this thread....good or bad.
#56 - Posted 11/26/09 @2:14PM by jediyyz [contact]

#54 Analogkid7...did I not mention Dream Theater?! You don't know me so you may be surprised to know that your assumptions are far from the truth! At any rate, hope you have a nice Thanksgiving!
#57 - Posted 11/26/09 @9:39PM by LanceTheShred [contact]

Jedi-Not enough time to respond but the intervention was perceived as abrupt. I appreciate the fact that you will stand up for this band (as I have since 1976) and the fact that your family band was inspired by the greatest is very cool.

As for the comment- In case you haven't noticed, a lot of long time contributors are either seldom seen or gone altogether!

The S&A's party is over. Look back at the historical data on S&A's tour and album rumors from 2006-There were hardly any posts until they released S&A's in May 2007. That's where the explosion started. Watch what happens when the next studio album is about to come out. The vets will come out of the woodwork............................

Hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
#58 - Posted 11/26/09 @11:47PM by analogkid7 [contact]

#55- You're right. That's Jedi's opinion, and there's absolutely nothing wrong about that, and also, I'm shocked that my first comment got me so much comments. I just happened to mention my idea, but i got all that junk. Also, Jedi, please forgive me for being a jerk. I didn't mean anything bad. One more thing, HAPPY THANKSGIVING! :)
#59 - Posted 11/27/09 @1:47AM by GedHed [contact]

I hope you all had a really nice Thanksgiving. We did at our house. Good food, family. It was nice. I am thankful for this site, to have met some really great people here, for all the time and effort Ed puts into RIAB--and for all of the cool pellets RIAB-ers contribute. I love it here. I really do! :)

I just wanna' say that it wasn't my intention to offend anyone by my PT talk. I just happen to love the band, as I do Rush. SW is just mind-blowing, and there hasn't been any other band that has affected me as PT has since I saw Rush on the R30 tour. Yes, I do frequent the PT forum, but it just happens that there are quite a few PT fans who post here. Music is quite a passion of mine and it's tempting to comment when the subject of such a top notch band is brought up. PT's right up there with the guys for me. Rush isn't touring at the moment. PT is. A group of us happened to get together at some of the shows and we were all bowled over by them. Since RIAB is where we all became acquainted, the subject was bound to come up. If anyone else wanted to discuss DT or DP or any other band, it certainly wouldn't offend me. As a matter of fact, I'd be interested. I love music talk, and Rush fans sure seem to have good taste, IMHO. As Kelly said, when sports talk occurs here & it doesn't interest me (which it's likely not to) I just skip over those posts. No big deal. :::shrug::: I just know that when things really heat up with Rush again, there'll be no shortage of on-topic posts. Anyway...again, it was never my intent to offend anyone. Honestly, I just don't understand what's offensive about it. Can't promise I'll never speak off-topic again, though (unless Ed asks me to)...I guess I'm in favor of Free Will.

Rush on...
