Rush: The Documentary sneak peek shown at Windsor film festival
Posted at 10:12AM | comments (25)

UPDATE - 11/17@9:16AM: I have a couple of quick updates. I'm pretty certain now that the portion of the clip with Alex talking to his parents was taken from the 1973 Allan King documentary Come On Children which Alex was involved with. The way it's described sounds exactly like one scene from the film and reader RushFanForever confirmed with Martin Popoff (who is also involved with the Rush documentary) that they did indeed use several clips from that film. Also, RushFanForever located this short audio interview with Dunn and McFadyen from the Windsor Film Festival where they mention that one of the chapters in the Rush documentary is titled Revenge of the Nerds.

We had last heard an update regarding the upcoming Rush Documentary this past summer when filmmakers Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen were interviewed by Classic Rock's Jerry Ewing for Prog magazine. In the interview we received a few more details regarding the documentary including the fact that it wouldn't likely be released until next Summer. Shortly after that they posted a few behind-the-scenes pics to the Banger Films website, but we hadn't heard much of anything since then. This past weekend Scot and Sam appeared at an event titled Take Five! The Return of Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn as part of the Windsor International Film Festival at the Capitol Theatre & Arts Centre in Windsor, ON. They spoke about and showed clips from all of the documentaries they've worked on and saved the last 5 minutes for a sneak peek look at the Rush documentary. They titled the sneak peek clip Rush - The Early Years and reader spiralarray was lucky enough to attend and reported the following:

... They said no one (other than them and Rush and some insiders I guess) had seen the footage. In the clip , there was footage of Geddy (current) and Geddy's mother (talking about Geddy when he was younger and how worried she was when he quit school, etc). Also, some footage of Alex (high school age) sitting at a table with his parents, talking about his future and that he wanted to quit school. His parents were trying to convince him to go to university. There was also footage from a show Rush did at a high school, with John Rustey on drums. Pretty neat. I asked them when they expect to be finished and when it will be released and I didn't get a firm answer, but they said they are still working on it and The Toronto Film festival was mentioned, for a premiere of the documentary. They said possibly January, but it sounded like next year sometime, is when it will be out on DVD. They want to get some footage for at the end of the documentary of Rush in the studio working on their next album, I think, before they finish it off. Just thought I'd share that with you guys. It was pretty cool to see these 2 guys and be able to interact with them a bit. They are are cool guys and you could tell they respect Rush a lot. ...

So it definitely sounds like they have some great home movies from the guys to share in the documentary and - more surprisingly - some early footage of the band with John Rutsey. This seems to confirm something I'd already heard on very good authority; that the filmmakers had gotten their hands on some pro-shot footage taken from a Canadian Bandstand gig the band played at Laura Secord High School in St. Catharines, ON in 1974 (no joke!). If this is true (and I can't think of any other high school gig pre-Peart that they would have quality footage of), it is a pretty big deal since there has never been any publicly released footage of the band playing with Rutsey on drums. As for the release date for the film, that still sounds dependent on many factors including what comes out of Rush's band meeting this month. The filmmakers seem to really want to include some footage of the guys in the studio; hopefully Rush will oblige them. It would be nice if Scot and Sam would post this preview somewhere online so we can all see it! (hint, hint)

I am droooooooooling on myself thinking about this DVD!!!!! but I have to say, isn't it peculiar that someone would videotape a conversation with their son about quitting school? just how did that happen? anyone else think that doesn't make sense? hey, not complaining, just sayin'....

#2 - That's exactly what crossed my mind too, LOL. I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

WOW, i just got to playing the videos below of the kids playing at the (supposed) RRHOF, holy crap (!) they do this medley of RUSH songs, what a neat surprise! Wonder if they know what "Bankgok" is about...probably the Zakk Wyld looking dude does...DOH!

#3, same here. I wish I could go back in time, maybe I should have quit too instead of going all the way to 19th grade!!!

Post #2....I thought that too, but I saw it with my own two eyes..Alex, as a teenager...sitting at a table and there were a bunch of people at the table, including Alex's parents and Alex was saying that he didnt want to go to university and his parents were both trying to talk him into it...and toward the end of that clip...it shows Alex's face...and he looks pissed off...really mad. haha. It was kinda funny, actually. Not sure why it was filmed ,but for some reason ,someone was filming it.
Also, I can account for there definitely being footage of Rush with John Rutsey playing at a high school. Not sure how much footage, but it was about 20 seconds, out of the 5 minute clip they showed.

I am soooo looking forward to this DVD. It looks like it's going to be great!

#5 - spiralarray, did you get a sense of the quality of the concert footage from the few seconds they showed?
#8 - Posted 11/16/09 @10:49AM by A-CELL-OF-AWARENESS [contact]

Spiral...10-4 brother, I hope nobody interprets my post to mean I did not believe you, nothing could be furthur from the truth. I swear to you all that I am going to prove once and for all that you CAN wear out a DVD until it won't play anymore when this thing comes out...LOL!!! Or at minimum set a record for the Guiness Book...he he he...

spiralarray - I have to wonder if the footage of Alex with his parents in the film was taken from the 1972 documentary 'Come On Children' by Allan King.

#9 - RFF, I was thinking the same thing- definitely a possibility.
#11 - Posted 11/16/09 @11:37AM by RushFanForever [contact]

Ed and spiralarray - the more I think about, where it says 'footage of Alex (high school age) sitting at a table with his parents, talking about his future and that he wanted to quit school' has to be from the 'Come On Children' documentary. That footage would not be available anywhere else up until now.

I just got my Backstage Secrets documentary. I can't wait to pop it in. Probably won't be able to finish the full five hours until the end of the week though. I'll let you guys know how it turns out. Hopefully there will be many clips of RUSH playing.

#7 posts...
Keep in mind I only saw this once and it was pretty quick..the total time was around 5 minutes for the whole "Rush- The early years" ,but I think everything I saw was new to me. I had never seen any of it. Im not sure if the footage of Alex talking with his parents is from that "Come of children" documentary, as I hadn't heard of that until you mentioned it. The quality , well...it wasn't great, but just how cool it is to see old footage you haven't seen ,of Rush makes up for the quality. It wasn't terrible though. I am not sure what the song was, Rush was playing at the high school show, but it sounded bluesy or along the lines of the type of music Rush played at that time. I remember at the beginning of the clip of Rush at the high school gig, I think John Rutsey was talking, introducing the band. I have never ever seen any footage of John Rutsey, on video. They all look very very young. Alex..looks so young in the footage of him at the table with his parents. Anyway, I am really looking forward to this DVD,too. And I really get a good feeling about Sam Dunn and his partner,as far as integrity goes and I know I read something about Sam Dunn (in an interview somewhere) that he was just at Geddy's house and that Geddy was giving him access to everything he has, for the documentary. I would have liked to ask more questions ,Saturday night..but there was a room full of other people and some of them were asking questions too, so I basically just asked if he knew when it would be completed and released.

I emailed Martin Popoff, the author of the 2004 Rush biography 'Contents Under Pressure' who is also involved in the creation of the Rush Documentary with the following:

'Hello Martin, I am curious to know if you are aware that Alex Lifeson was in a 1972 documentary called 'Come On Children' directed by the late Allan King?' If Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen are looking for extra footage for the Rush documentary, they may want to check this out'.

Martin's reply to me was:

'Yep, we've used lots of this in the movie... priceless!'

So again, that scene with Alex and his parents is from 'Come on Children'.

So there is a chapter in the Rush Documentary titled 'Revenge Of The Nerds'.

Hi all! I happen to have a dvd of Come on Children and the scene arguing with his parents is indeed from that film. It was rather uncomfortable watching it, but fascinating at the same time.

So I'm watching the Edmonton Oilers at Columbus Blue Jackets on Fox Sports Ohio, when what do you know but a fight broke out...... and the song they played in the arena was "The Spirit of Radio".......this happened about 5 minutes ago :-D

That photo of the center aisle cameraman reminds me of former Senator Larry Craig...
#21 - Posted 11/16/09 @10:44PM by Armeee [contact]

So....... we wait for the guys to get in the studio and have them filmed for the documentary. Ya great!

And what if the guys don't hit the studio next spring, is this thing shelved or what.

I bet its another year before this thing is released.

Very cool!

Kudos to Spiral for the splendid report... One would hope that additional bits and pieces continue to surface until the doc comes out... Keep an eye out, people!!
#24 - Posted 12/1/09 @6:02PM by mommy_of_zuzu [contact]

Whoa, how cool is that?!

Why am I so fascinated with what they did in their formative years? I guess it's like seeing ZuZu's puppy pictures ;-)

It must've been terrifying for Ged & Al's parents - especially Ged's mom - to hear they wanted to leave school without the insurance of educaton in case the band didn't work out. How many musicians out there left school and didn't make it?
#25 - Posted 12/10/09 @8:12PM by RushFanForever [contact]

This is from Donna2112 from RushTour.com

While I'm here, I'll add another tidbit that Martin passed along that stuck with me -- for obvious reasons. Among the several interviewees that includes other rock stars, road crew, etc., Martin indicated that Alex's Mom (and I believe Geddy's as well) was interviewed and there's more than 30 minutes of footage (maybe even closer to an hour) of this single interview and given that the movie will be 2 hours, give or take, most of this interview will end up on the cutting room floor. This is a perfect example of something special that will be lost, at least in part.

It's my understanding, and I believe Sam's hope, that the RushCon fan interviews would take care of the last of what his crew thought were loose ends as the documentary began to take form. All of the RushCon attendees received a survey from Sam Dunn's group just prior to RushCon with very specific questions aimed to narrow down the fans who might be able to provide whatever it was Sam felt was missing.

As this documentary has Rush's blessing, Sam's crew also has a good amount of concert and backstage footage and interviews with Rush.
