Rush Working Men CD/DVD compilation tracklist, cover images
Posted at 4:50PM | comments (72)

UPDATE - 10/22@5:09PM: From Rush in Rio: 2112, Closer to the Heart and YYZ. From R30: The Spirit of Radio, Dreamline, Subdivisions, One Little Victory (previously unreleased) and Working Men. From Snakes & Arrows Live: Limelight, Freewill, Far Cry and Tom Sawyer.

UPDATE - 10/13@9:42AM: The DVD is now available for pre-order.

UPDATE - 10/1@9:55PM: Here's the sellsheet for the DVD which indicates that the version of Tom Sawyer will include the South Park intro which means it must be the Snakes & Arrows Live version.

UPDATE - 9/30@9:44AM: And here's the press release as a pdf directly from the Rush website which includes a CD cover image and the DVD cover image.

UPDATE - 9/30@8:44AM: Here's the official press release (thanks RushFanForever). It doesn't really reveal any information that we didn't already know other than to say that One Little Victory will be a previously unreleased version, which one has to assume is the the version that was left off of R30 and that will appear on the R30 re-release. Also a couple of corrections to my list below; Subdivisions was not on Rush in Rio and YYZ was not on R30 but will be on the R30 re-release.

I recently let you know that Rush would be releasing a new CD/DVD compilation on November 17th which will include cuts from their 3 most recent concert DVDs: Rush in Rio, R30 and Snakes & Arrows Live. The compilation will be titled Working Men and Music Tap recently revealed the tracklist (thanks RushFanForever).

Atlantic Records will be releasing Working Men for Rush, which is a 12-track performance collection ("Limelight," "The Spirit of Radio," "2112," "Freewill," "Dreamline," "Far Cry," "Subdivisions," "One Little Victory," "Closer to the Heart," "Tom Sawyer," "Working Man," "YYZ") planned for November 17. Rounder will release the DVD title for this one, same date.

Notice that they did not indicate from which of the 3 DVDs each track would originate, although we can narrow things down a bit. Here's the tracklist along with a footnote indicating which DVD(s) it might be taken from:

Limelight - RiR,R30,S&A
The Spirit of Radio - RiR,R30,S&A
2112 - RiR,R30
Freewill - RiR,S&A
Dreamline - RiR,R30,S&A
Far Cry - S&A
Subdivisions - R30,S&A
One Little Victory - RiR,S&A R30 re-release version
Closer to the Heart - RiR
Tom Sawyer w/South Park intro - RiR,R30 S&A
Working Man - RiR,R30
YYZ - RiR,S&A

RiR - Rush in Rio
R30 - R30
S&A - Snakes & Arrows Live

Things are still a little unclear at this point, but it looks like the DVD will include a companion CD and that you will also be able to purchase the CD by itself. Amazon has it the CD available for pre-order but it's not obvious whether it's the CD/DVD combination or just the CD.

Ok Its a CD/DVD Compilation...I Thought it was only the DVDs that were gonna be RE-packed in 1 set!..

heres The Press Release for some Folks:

First 'best of' live compilation
available on DVD & CD in stores and online
November 17th

Anthem Entertainment has announced the release of "WORKING MEN," the first 'best of' live performance compilation from renowned rock trio Rush. Due in stores and online November 17th, the collection will be released on DVD in partnership with Rounder and on CD via Atlantic Records outside of Canada.

Culled from Anthem Entertainment and Zoë Vision's three other Rush DVD releases - Rush in Rio, R30 & Snakes & Arrows Live - "WORKING MEN" features live recordings of the band's greatest hits as well as one previously unreleased track , "One Little Victory" (see attached track listing).

Rush - Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart - is without question one of the most inventive and compelling groups in rock history, equally famed for both its virtuoso musicianship and provocative songwriting. Just last year, a career-chronicling Rolling Stone feature praised the band for its continuing artistic vitality, noting that "It's true that Rush doesn't mean today what it did in '76 or even '96. It may mean more." The sentiment was echoed in subsequent pieces published earlier this year in Entertainment Weekly and Spin. Rush's enduring pop culture relevance is perhaps best evidenced by a pair of high profile appearances - a rare national television performance and interview on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" in 2008 (the band's first TV appearance since 1975), and a pivotal role in the storyline of the hit comedy, I Love You, Man. Released this past spring, the band also made a memorable cameo in the film, which starred Paul Rudd and Jason Segal.

Since releasing their self-titled debut album in 1974, Rush has achieved worldwide sales exceeding 35 million units, including such acclaimed works as 1976's "2112," 1981's "MOVING PICTURES," 1996's "TEST FOR ECHO," and 2002's "VAPOR TRAILS." The band's most recent studio collection, 2007's "SNAKES & ARROWS," made a triumphant debut on the Billboard 200 upon its initial release, entering the chart in the #3 spot. The album's success marked Rush's highest chart debut since 1993, as well as the group's eleventh top ten album in the U.S.

They should find a good bootleg of the VT tour and release it. OLV should be available on all 3 of the DVD's after the full version of R30 is done. That's all folks!
#6 - Posted 9/29/09 @6:45PM by cpb [contact]

REALLY bummed they're going for Closer To The Heart instead of Bravado for this...but I guess I'm OK with that, as long as Dreamline made the mix...
#7 - Posted 9/29/09 @6:59PM by dedlift [contact]

LIVE cd/dvd compilation...
R30 LIVE Blue Ray...

Keep how great RUSH is live front and center in everyone's minds and probably get a few new fans who are blown away by the sheer brilliance of live RUSH...

Record a new album and TOUR BABY TOUR and support the new and live releases!!!

Come on "Working Men" help us out!
#8 - Posted 9/29/09 @7:23PM by TheHonestMan [contact]

I'm pretty sure that the 'unreleased' One Little Victory is the R30 version. Think about it - they are already editing it for the Blu-Ray R30 release. If not, it looks like I just got sucked into buying this thing too.
#9 - Posted 9/29/09 @7:26PM by Rob [contact]

If they should release a bootleg...make it "A view from the palace"
#10 - Posted 9/29/09 @7:35PM by TheHonestMan [contact]

I was watching some clips on Youtube from the March 8, 1990 show, and Alex is playing the keyboards during Time Stand Still?!?!?! How did I never know about that?

Anyways, it's really cool to see professionally shot footage that was never released. Check out if you haven't seen it before.

#6 too bad closer to the heart is retired and will not be played on the next couple of tours. geddy told me jokingly it is not a "neil" thing, it is a group thing. it sounded great on "different stages" though. he is taking one tour at a time, meaning R40 is definitely on the radar. he looked really good and refreshed at the blue jay game last week.

#10&11 Quit smoking those funny cigarettes during those shows and you'll remember!!!!!:)

Ed, 'Subdivisions' is not on Rush In Rio. 'New World Man' is though from the 'Signals' album.
#15 - Posted 9/29/09 @8:49PM by RushFanForever [contact]

Also YYZ is not on R30 but it will be on the R30 Blu-Ray release.
#16 - Posted 9/29/09 @8:53PM by snowdog2113 [contact]

"I'm pretty sure that the 'unreleased' One Little Victory is the R30 version."

That has to be it. Of course, on the same day it will be available on the R30 BluRay so it won't technically be unreleased by then.

"I was watching some clips on Youtube from the March 8, 1990 show, and Alex is playing the keyboards during Time Stand Still?!?!?! How did I never know about that?

Anyways, it's really cool to see professionally shot footage that was never released. Check out if you haven't seen it before. "

Yes, he had keyboards up there for a few tours and Time Stand Still was not the only song where he played them. He also did on Superconductor and possibly one other song but I'd have to go back to look, I can't remember right now. That entire concert is available as well as the complete Presto tour concert from Mountain View on 6/27/1990. Plus the Counterparts tour at Auburn Hills but I guess everybody knows about that.
#17 - Posted 9/29/09 @9:05PM by snowdog2113 [contact]

Sirius, do you have a link to that press release? There's still nothing on Rush.com and you'd think that it would be a joint press release with the R30 BluRay info since they're releasing them on the same day but there's nothing about it. I sure hope it's actually coming.

Has Alex played the keyboard for any song other than Time Stand Still?
#24 - Posted 9/30/09 @11:22AM by Lamb Saag [contact]

New cover art begs the question: is Hugh Syme resting on his laurels?

Also, the Freudian analyst inside of me wonders how the band members could put so much Christian Triumvirate iconography on the front cover, "O Cristo Redentor" notwithstanding?

Or, is that the nature of the pun: that the two icons of laborer and saviour are equidistant from the honorific title "Working Men"?

Just sayin'... please don't flame me... it's the cough medicine...
#25 - Posted 9/30/09 @11:23AM by Lamb Saag [contact]

P.S. - If you stare at it long enough, the snake appears to levitate above the pavement!
#26 - Posted 9/30/09 @12:34PM by hermy [contact]

#24 Resting on his laurels? I think he was out to lunch and his secretary borrowed his Photo Shop.

I think it's a representation of the whole package being put together to pad the pockets of Anthem and Rounder this holiday season.

Hopefully that title represents at least what they are doing right now.

I like the cover. It ties elements of all three Live shows quite well: S&A is obvious, the R30 Road Sign, and the Cross overlooking the Rio venue.

This is for the fans that MUST have everything, and for the casual fans that might not want to spend the money for the original dvds but still want to see some of their favorite songs live.

I might be getting a couple for Christmas/Birthday gifts.

And to Prove what I said,If u check Rush Videos on Youtube,U can see a lot of PPL posting Things like "Oh i Just Discovered them in The Movie "I Love You,Man"..they look awesome!" or " Slap a Da Bass"..XD.

and for the press release link,it came from a Rush Page on Facebook..Somehow I Didnt even checked Rush.Com first ...so How the Heck the Facebook Page Had the press release before it was posted on Rush.Com?..well I THINK it was posted there before the website..but wtv.

I really like the cover art. A greatest hits of live selections, sure, my library will not be complete without these two new releases, so I will be getting them for sure.

Besides, after everything the boys have given us over the past 30+ years, I do not have a problem giving a little back to them!

And the un-released version of OLV? Sweeet!

And remember, many folks did not purchase the deluxe edition of R30, those live tracks are not avaliable on CD for them to purchase separatly. So, with that said, this release makes sense to me!

Gotta love the boys!
#36 - Posted 9/30/09 @5:49PM by main monkey business [contact]

I heard the blu-ray version of R30 has now been rescheduled for release in December...that would figure....I find that out 30 minutes after I preorder it...LOL
#37 - Posted 9/30/09 @5:54PM by main monkey business [contact]

Joe (#29)...just saw the post. Rush and the record company are making as much money as they can right now...what's wrong with that? That's capitalism...that's what has made this country great in the past. Be honest...if it was you, and you were nearing the end of your career, wouldn't you want to make as much money as you could before it came to an end? I know I would...I'll also admit that if I could do what they do...I'd be trying to make every dat-blame dollar I could! Doctors do it, lawyers, do it...athletes do it at contract time...actors do it before every movie they shoot...why shouldn't Rush do it also? Like I said...I can't be bummed about it...if I could do it...I sure would!
#38 - Posted 9/30/09 @6:13PM by The_king_will_Neil [contact]

How about a 3rd version of R30+ for Rush FANS - a 1 DVD version with the 8 songs we don't already have?

Like many here, I'll probably be getting the DVD set anyway (likely as a Christmas gift, and not one I'd complain about). Perhaps I (we) could sell/give/lend the 'plain' R30 DVDs to try to recruit new Rush fans?

My thought on the topic of the band's age:
"Though I've reached a signpost
It's really not the end
Like Old Sol behind the mountain
I'll be coming up again..."
I think the time they take before beginning a new project only improves the result. (But, of course, that doesn't make me any less impatient.)
#39 - Posted 9/30/09 @6:24PM by The_king_will_Neil [contact]

MMB, #37, I have no problem with re-releases and making money, and your argument works for the record company. But if the band were putting together a "'best of' live performance compilation", why would they limit it to these three releases; couldn't material from previous footage be included in a 'best of'? This is like the Retrospective collections - driven by the record companies, since it's what they have conveniently available. (Not that I'm complaining, that's Capitalism, and we wouldn't have Rush without Capitalism.)

I won't speculate on what I'd put in a 'best of', since that would be everything from ATWAS on. Hey, maybe a Box Set!
#40 - Posted 9/30/09 @6:42PM by Liverpool 78

Oh. Hello there world...

Re #10,11,13 -

I don't think it's so much Alex playing the keyboards, more like Alex triggering a sample. I remember being taken aback during the Roll the Bones tour, when I saw the guys at UK Birmingham NEC, to see Alex playing the keyboards during 'Time Stand Still' - with his nose. I remember initially being very impressed but later thinking "what the f@#K!?!" Now of course I realise that even if they are just triggering samples that still has a live aspect, in terms of playing in time so that they all sound okay. I can't think of another band that could do that without a click track.

I don't know what to think about the new compilation cd/dvd/blue-ray/anyotherformatthatIdon'tknowabout thingy - just seems like a record company ploy, but I agree with MMB - 'that's capitalism'.

Lamb Saag, you are so funny!!! I always look forward to reading your comments.

My eldest daughter's boyfriend watched 'I love you man' last weekend and thought that Rush were a band made up for the film. I gave him a poke in the eye for being so ignorant, and I'm going to have a GREAT weekend giving him a Rushian lesson :-))

Lamb Saag - just had a look at your blog -have you not been in there for a while? I know it's infrequent, but APRIL!?! Like someone said about Rush, "get to work!" :-))

#42 - Posted 9/30/09 @7:26PM by dssnhopper [contact]

Two cents: I'm not really down with all of the re-releases. How many times and how many different ways can you do the same song? Remember, Rush was lauded (and criticized) for their desire and ability to play their songs, live, as closely as possible to the original studio recording.

It's not my place to determine if the band is greedy or not. I'd love to have everything, in every form, that the band has put out. Fact is, I can't justify it. If you can, great. It's possible that the band is trying to do both; make money and satiate the wants/needs of their fans. Sometimes we have to pick and choose what we want. I think they call it Freewill!
#43 - Posted 9/30/09 @7:27PM by RushFanForever [contact]

The_king_will_Neil...I agree with everything you said...all I'm saying is I don't have a problem with making all the cash you can...I will agree that at times it is overkill, but people like myself buy just about anything Rush puts out...however...I won't buy "Working Man"...I will buy the R30 Blu-Ray, just so I can see it in blu-ray instead of my normal copy.
you and dssnhopper think basically the same way I do....I think we just say it differently. I'm all for making all the cash you can...and apparantly both of you do also...as well as the majority of fine people who post on this site. Do I think they can go overboard a little? Absolutely! That's why I won't buy "Working Man"....However...if the boys sense people will buy it (and they will)...then they'll put it out...for money...and I think to satisfy the fans until the new material is released. And to The_king_will_Neil....a box set would be absolutely awesome!!! As long as they put some extra "goodies" in with it...guitar picks, photos, etc...like in the R30 Deluxe set. You...are a genious! LOL

#46 - Posted 9/30/09 @8:01PM by dssnhopper [contact]

MMB, you got it, mybruthafromanuthamutha! I also like the idea of goodies . . .
#47 - Posted 9/30/09 @8:16PM by The_king_will_Neil [contact]

MMB, I agree, and I agree that we agree, and ...

I have no problem with them releasing anything they wish; I doubt Rush will ever take this to overkill (unlike certain other artists, who release 'new' CDs rehashing old stuff - didn't Rush lose a Grammy to one of those?).

I don't tend to buy those, but I did buy Retrospective 3, simply because of those extras - having the music videos on CD won me over.

Come to think of it, that's how I got into Rush. I had heard the entire Signals album on the radio, and the two songs I had never heard before got my attention (Losing It and Countdown, still my favorites). When I went to buy a Rush album, being a poor high school student, I wanted the best value, so I bought something called Archive. When I learned that it was the first 3 LPs in full, I started buying the others in order. (It was particularly interesting when I spent a year between AFTK and Hemispheres, just as if I were waiting for its release - wondering what "Part I" and "To Be Continued ..." meant.)

As someone said, these things are a good option for ppl just discovering Rush.
#48 - Posted 9/30/09 @8:43PM by main monkey business [contact]

Yep...I got into Rush in 1978...bought AFTK from Columbia House on 8-track. (that gives my age away a little bit)..I hated it the first time I heard it...but played it again a couple weeks later, and it hit me like a freight train...I've been a huge fan ever since. My first Rush show was on the Permanent Waves tour...however...my buddy has tickets, and pics from the Caress of Steel tour, when they were still the backup band. Needless to say we all started down Rush Avenue going in different directions...but we all made it to the same destination...and that's what is important...
#49 - Posted 9/30/09 @8:46PM by RushFanForever [contact]

I think the 'Working Men' CD and DVD compilation is more of a record company thing.

Seriously, do you think the band would ever come up with a title like 'Working Men' in this day and age? No way. The title sounds bland in a way.

I am going to post a comment that Alex and Geddy made about the Mercury Greatest Hits 1974-87 compilation. This is from the Power Windows site.

link

# "...part of a contractual thing with Paul Egram with Mercury Records from our previous deal with them, which expired in 1990. So they have the rights to do a number of greatest hits or packaged records." - Alex Lifeson, AT&T Celebrity Chat, Feb. 10, 2003

# "We did not have a lot of input in this. This was mostly a record company project. Our opinions were made known and they were very cooperative about doing good packaging for us." - Geddy Lee, USAToday.com chat, Feb 5, 2003

I am sure this Atlantic release relates to the above comments.

Thanks, but I'll pass on this. I get what their doing, and it's understandable, but I'm not in the crowd they are targeting here, I guess.

The band's repetitive playlist (every night essentially the same show as before) might not lend itself to doing what Rhino and the Dead have done over the last several years -- downloadable series of concerts -- but it might be interesting to try. They have already released exemplars of every show back to TfE. Maybe there is stuff in the can that's usable for earlier tours -- the stuff between A Show of Hands and TfE. That I might be interested in buying.

I'll be using the cash I would normally blow on this to prepare for the coming total economic collapse of the US. Food, water, ammo. End of story.

I'll pass on this release but it's probably a good product for newer Rush fans.

This release is for very wealthy Rush Fans who are the type who must own everything they put out. I already spent hard earned money on RiR, R30, S&A Live, AND the Toronto SARS Festival to boot. I agree with you Fiat.

#55 - As usual, Lamb Saag makes me laugh so hard (in my office at work, mind you!) my eyes water!

I could spend the day reading your blog, LS, you're a scream!

I will buy the new Rush thingie to support the band. I don't want it to flop and have them assume we don't love them anymore.

At no. 69 my comments maybe come way too late for anyone to read, but have to say apart from the artwork which is pretty good, this release is a huge disappointment. Never been a fan of compilations, or repackaged re-releases. I know this is driven by Atlantic but its really poor. Bit of an insult to the fans really. Id be surprised if this sells well, but I could be wrong.

Without "Bravado" from RiR, how can it be a compilation of "greats"?

I'm with you mommy_of_zuzu...I've already preordered the R30 on blu-ray...it's not that I need it...but I want everything Rush puts out on blu-ray.
I understand if people don't want to buy what Rush (or the record company) is putting out..but at least keep the complaints to a small rumble. I'm not buying "Working Man" for the reasons you state, but I'm not going to speak up like that. I'm not crazy about the repackaging....but I don't think it's dumb, or pathetic, or sad, or disgusting...if people will buy it...then I say put it out! If I could repackage music I made, and people would buy it...I'd be coming up with different repackaging ideas and mixes every day....people work to make money, and if you can do things a certain way to make more money without working as hard...more power to ya!

I am sure that the version of 'YYZ' that will be on 'Working Men' will be from 'Rush In Rio'. Since 'Tom Sawyer' with the South Park intro is on it, the band and or record company probably want this to be unique. Who isn't moved by a crowd that sings to an instrumental.
