Neil Peart's original Slingerland drum kit sold on eBay for $25,100
Posted at 1:59PM | comments (29)

UPDATE - 8/9@9:42PM: Michael of NeilPeartDrumsticks.com knows the buyer of the kit and had this to say in the comments:

Well the auction is over and the kit was won by a great guy and serious RUSH collector. :-)

No, not me. I do know who and just got off the phone with him. Good news is that it won't be locked away in a basement. It won't be going to Toronto either.

We were discussing ideas of where it can be displayed for all to see. Right now we are talking my personal favorite place is the Percussive Arts Society Museum in Indianapolis. This museum is also host to the International Drummers Hall of Fame.

They have quite an impressive collection of drum kits including some used by Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa. How nice would it be to have this kit displayed alongside Buddy and Gene's?

We are also discussing another venue to display it at for one week but that will be announced later after arrangements are made.

This is going to be a fun project to work on! I think you will like what might be done with the used heads off the drums. :-)

RUSH On!
-Michael

Great news!

----- snip -----

Last week Neil Peart's original Slingerland drum kit (which he used from Fly By Night through 2112) was put up for auction on eBay by owners Main Drag Music in Brooklyn, New York. The auction ended earlier today and the winning bid was for $25,100! By viewing the bidding history you can see that there were a lot of 2112-inspired bids; one for $2,112, one for $12,112.12, and my personal favorite - $21,121.12. Congratulations to the winning bidder; let's hope they either donate it to a museum or otherwise make it accessible for fans to appreciate.

Firstest!! $25,100? Guh gah, beyond my price point. Congrats whoever got it though.

RUSH!!!

Cool bids, ha ha ha! Well beyond my price threshold as well! Gotta save up the big bucks for the next time Rush tours!

I just hope this drum set doesn't disappear into the abyss now that it's been auctioned off. It would be a sad, sad shame.

Hope everyone is having a Geddy-licious weekend:

I'm off to see The Fleet Foxes tonight and Chickenfoot tomorrow! Woo Hoo!

Unbe-freakin'-lievable. That's a lot of dough. . . hopefully it went to a worthy cause!

Lmao....look at those last bid times. Now that had to be a lil intense no? Who ever had the faster connection won, damn these computers!

Kelly D did you get my PM I sent you? I sent you some cool music related stuff. If not, can you PM me your email and I can send it again?

Yes I did- thank you! I've been a little crazed this past weekend. . . I'll check out the links ASAP :)

PS: My opening bid of $2,021.12 clearly didn't win. At least I was the first one and can say I bid on it ... along with my other bids of $3,021.12 - $4,021.12 - $5,021.12 - $6,021.12. I tried. ;-)

Cool Michael that you guys are working on making the drumkit available for people to see. I could see making a day trip down to Indy from Chicago (i did so for the most recent Rush show) to gawk at the various historic percussive instruments- NP's kit would make the the place even more complete and relevant to us RUSH fanatics. Thanks to the serious bidder for sharing!!!
#9 - Posted 8/10/09 @1:08AM by katskahnne [contact]

Michael - that would be a great place for the kit to be displayed, and how appropriate, with the likes of Rich and Krupa! Love your bid amounts - sorry they didn't win but we'll be following the further adventures of The Kit with interest!! :-)

(#7)...This is going to be a fun project to work on! I think you will like what might be done with the used heads off the drums. :-) ...

Personally...if it is possibly going on display as a museum piece...why do anything with the used drumheads....Glortiz and I were talking about that yesterday...don't get rid of the drumheads...that'll take away from the aura of the drumkit...keep it the way it is and display it!!
#11 - Posted 8/10/09 @6:57AM by PetieLee [contact]

#7: Michael, I was very happy and relieved to read your post! Yay! I'm with MMB, leave the used heads on the drums! Display it that way!

this is good news. much thanks to the purchaser!
#13 - Posted 8/10/09 @10:34AM by mommy_of_zuzu [contact]

Yes, thanks to the purchaser! I love the idea it could be in a museum next to Krupa and Rich, where it belongs.
#14 - Posted 8/10/09 @11:00AM by craig [contact]

what are the odds neil re purchased the kit? juss sayin
#15 - Posted 8/10/09 @1:26PM by subdivincent [contact]

you might have something there, Craig - he DID say it was purchased by a great guy!
#16 - Posted 8/10/09 @1:28PM by subdivincent [contact]

on second thought, I think I remember Geddy saying that he's ratholed all kinds of Rush swag over the years. That would qualify him as a serious rush collector..........
#17 - Posted 8/10/09 @4:41PM by DawgTrappedInIndy [contact]

Bring them down here to Indy! I'll be there opening day!
#18 - Posted 8/10/09 @6:09PM by zappawizard [contact]

Someone please tell dude to leave the used heads on the kit!!!

This kit is almost exactly as it was when Mr Peart took it out of commission, and it should stay that way. Don't try to "spiffy" it up or anything.
#19 - Posted 8/10/09 @8:50PM by Peartdrumsticks [contact]

Sorry to say ... the used heads are coming off no matter how much begging is done. It is going to be done for a very very good cause. :-)

There are multiple reasons for the heads to come off and more detail will come out as we secure certain aspects of the project. The kit is not going to be restored and will be left as is, except for the heads and the addition of cymbals and proper stands. Only the two original logoed bass drum heads will remain.

Think of this little hint ... are the original used heads still on the Slingerland BlackChrome kit or the Tama Mahogany kit? Why are they not there???

RO!

WOW... huge price tag. VERY glad it went to a RUSH collector, and not just some memorabilia collector. As for the Rock Hall, they could only wish to have the kit (although they'd stash it in storage with the rest of the RUSH stuff that they have), and they wouldn't pay for it, they'd ask it to be donated.
#21 - Posted 8/11/09 @7:46AM by PetieLee [contact]

#14: craig, I thought about that a lot! Ha ha ha! That'd be sweet!

Totally not Rush related but - I saw Chickenfoot last night and they are amazing! If you can see them in concert, make it a point to do so! They are just incredible live and it was a great time had by all! I think it is really cool to be able to see great bands in smaller venues. Can't wait to see Porcupine Tree (three times) next month! Ooooooooooooh!

Just wanna give a shout out to the two super amazing Rush fans I met at Scmitt Music in Maplewood last night. Went in to the store to get hearing protection (The Myth is a great venue to see bands but if you're standing anywhere near the speakers, you get too much of an earful. The speakers are *right there*!) **Sorry I didn't catch your names, guys! Got too excited talking Rush!!!** Poor fellas had to stay and mind the store while Chickenfoot was in concert. They weren't aware of this wonderful site but they are now! It's my duty as a member of the RIAB Street Team - spreading the word of Rush everywhere I go to all who will listen [read: directing folks to this site]! Ha ha ha! Woo Hoo! Rush on, fellas!

I really, really miss Rush!!!

Love da Geddy! Miss da Geddy!

#21: Chickenfoot tonight! Can't wait! Sammy's always a blast. He always has everyone on their feet. This should be a really good time. No, they're not RUSH, but who is? Still going to be great. :)

Love love love your pics from last night, btw! You are *amazing* with a camera, Petie!

#19 - OK, fine, now you've REALLY got me going about the heads...?!?!?!

OT - Perseid meteor shower reminder for tonight, folks! This has been a public service announcement... ;-)
#24 - Posted 8/11/09 @3:51PM by drummerdad2112 [contact]

my guess on the drumheads: put up for auction - donate to a good cause
#25 - Posted 8/11/09 @6:12PM by main monkey business [contact]

Chickenfoot....I got their CD when it came out...but I was a little disappointed...just sounds like Van Hagar...which I wasn't a fan of...I expected more I guess...seeing how they have Joe Satriani on guitar. Glad you enjoyed the show however Petie!!!

What's really funny is I don't see that anyone has said a word about the new Rush CD that came out today. I was at Best Buy when the store opened...and got my copy. It sounds pretty darn good to me...(I am rather bias..however). And I thought that would get the news of the day...It was my big event anyhow!!

I had to laugh when I took the CD up to the cashier however...I just kept looking at the cover...the same as P/G studio...and had to laugh. They put out some more "rat pellets" to hold us over until the new studio CD comes out...and naturally I had to get my few "pellets"....Am I a rat? Damn right I am!!!!!

A totally cool Rush Fan and awesome human being recently provided me with this link (a short interview with Jason Segel and Paul Rudd):

Best Buy in the Twin Cities, Minneapolis/St. Paul (This is where Best Buy HQ is located???!! LOL!)does not believe in stocking their shelves with any new Rush releases, quite honestly. I'm quite upset. Wanted to get two copies of the new release and lo and behold, there are only about TEN copies of the GUP 1984 Tour release available for ALL stores here in the Twin Cities. I just love the support Best Buy gives to RUSH! So lame! If you're going to pick up a copy from Best Buy, I highly suggest calling first - don't waste your gas cuz they might not even have a copy!!! *You can find all kinds of Hannah Montana and Jonas Brothers stuff there though!* Grrrrrrr!

Love da Geddy! Miss da Geddy!
#28 - Posted 8/11/09 @7:17PM by katskahnne [contact]

PetieLee - Unfortunately the Best Buy near us is about the same story as far as Rush is concerned. FYE has a much better selection (MUCH!) but their prices...bleh.
#29 - Posted 8/11/09 @8:29PM by main monkey business [contact]

I'll tell you what the coolest part of the new CD is....the inside booklet that usually has lyrics on it and whatever....the one in this CD is the actual tour program from the Grace Under Pressure tour...pretty cool!
