Neil Peart news update
Posted at 5:06PM | comments (22)

Neil Peart[NEWS, WEATHER, and SPORTS: August, 2009 - A Little Yellow Cabin on Yellowstone Lake]

Neil Peart has once again updated the News page on his website, describing a recent motorcycle trip to Yellowstone National Park - his last major trip before settling in with his wife to await the birth of their baby this month. It's an especially long news update, spanning 2 lengthy pages. Neil's prose is as interesting and educational as is typical of his writings, but there's very little mention of Rush other than an allusion to Rush's Manhattan Project as it relates to his visit to Arco, Idaho - the The First City in the World Lighted by Atomic Power. He also gives us a possible glimpse into some future Rush lyrics:

... I can only hope that one day I will return to Yellowstone, maybe even to that little yellow cabin. And that wish gives rise to another line in iambic tetrameter-"If the fates are kinder, than they sometimes seem to be."

That line too just cries out to be sung, perhaps in a triumphant chorus, with harmonized backing vocals:

If the fates are kinder, than they sometimes seem to be
(A little yellow cabin on Yellowstone Lake)
There will still be many journeys and adventures for me
(A little yellow cabin on Yellowstone Lake)
A million miles, a hundred songs in my head
(A little yellow cabin on Yellowstone Lake)
'Til the stupid fates decide it's time to make me dead
(A little yellow cabin on Yellowstone Lake)
Yeah!

Now everybody...

Many thanks to lilvictory for the heads up.

Kelly, me too.

I want his next update to just be a family photo!

and I learned way too much about the history of nukes and such this time.

I do want to hear them make that little bit at the end into a song. Country like or not. Why not give it a go?

ARCO!?!?!?!?!?!?! oh man...I was just up there...and as I was near Lava Hot Springs last week I could have swore I saw Neil on his ride.

I went to The Crater Of The Moon National Park, then spent the night in Arco after the first First S&A leg at RedRocks.

Arco is 'famous' for its deep fried pickels. They were pretty gross. I wonder If Neil had any?

The man never ceases to amaze me! Happy to call you Daddy again...

I guess we ate at the same place, suprised not to hear about the pickles. Also the town has a serious eyesore, a huge horizon outcrop that is plastered with airforce grafiti. Hard to think of Neil not being as repulsed as I was, its in my travel notes.

Also, i guess he did not go to Crater Of The Moon nat park, which is only 20 miles from Arco. Cool Place.

Ok, lets get this line out of the way, "After that, I wouldn't be going anywhere for a while." "A while" could be a year right? That would give us a summer tour 2012, just in time for the Mayan Pockyclips!!! Sweet. What a way to go out.

Nettie - I'm with you. That positively MUST become a full-on song! I always love his blogs...

And now time to await new parenthood...how exciting! Love, luck and good health to the Pearts!

I love reading NEP News.
He rode right passed my house. I live near Cedar City Utah. Off of I-15. I am one of those returned Mormon missionaries-- a so called Elder. I love this guy!
I just drove up to see my son last week who works in Jackson Hole Wyoming. We drove through Logan too. We went to Grand Teton National Park. It is so beautiful there. Yellowstone is so beautiful too.

#10 So you must be feeling a bit what I am Lynn. I am in the Aves in Salt Lake.

When I lived in San Jose, CA I freeeked when he wrote about riding at places I had spent lots of time. The Tour Of the S.S. Professor went right past my apartment.

Today was weird cause I was like, "why stop in Logan? Neil needs to dine in Salt lake, he will be suprised. Plenty of cheep hotels as well. Why is he so into saving money? Weird.

The chorus for the Set Two opener! Oh, make it f*%king rock! I can almost hear it now and I just want to run around the house yelling it out at the top of my lungs! May fatherhood give you much joy and awesome song ideas.

I have a man crush on Neil!! Hello to all my family in Ely, I miss & love you all!!

I found something that relates to music and bicycling which Neil had done during the 80's and early 90's when touring with Rush.

David Byrne of Talking Heads also takes a bicycle on tour with him and goes sightseeing according to an interview appearance on The Hour.

Neil has mentioned in his biographies and in interviews of being a fan of The Talking Heads.

This is where the similarities lie with both musicians.

oo, an update, but not the one I am expecting, where's that baby?!
#17 - Posted 8/10/09 @12:14PM by dadof4 [contact]

Neil, Way to keep up the pace.
#18 - Posted 8/10/09 @1:04PM by Armeee [contact]

Holy frig Neil,

Its the woman that eats for 2 when expecting, not you!

Ease off the brats, shakes and atomic burgers..... were there no salad bars in the 2500 mile trip.

I saw a recent picture of Neil.... surprised he could get through the door of that yellow cabin.

Time to take the peddle bike out and also "drumming" yourself into shape. LOL
#19 - Posted 8/10/09 @1:10PM by mommy_of_zuzu [contact]

18 - Aw, that's not nice, Arneee! Neil will always be a hottie to me, even with baby barf on him ;-)

Poor Carrie's probably suffering in the heat. Maybe she'd like a fried pickle and ice cream?

Kelly & Nettie - I know, I keep refreshing RIAB hoping to hear the first news!

A rhythm to everything...tell me you all don't wait with bated breath for the next Neil news update. I sure do. It's not that the details reveal some masked truths or undiscovered wonders; they simply center us for just a moment. A brief glance through lenses we are familiar with...Thanks Neil for the centering.

#20 - nicely put! I second that emotion...

#18 - I know plenty of guys who put on "sympathy pounds" when their wives are expecting. And Neil, while he may be the most awesome drummer and lyricist on the planet, is, ultimately, a guy. Getting ready to drum on the next album will probably whip him back into his usual athletic shape!

#19 - I'm with ya, but...funny, when I was expecting my son, pickles were about the LAST thing on earth I wanted! I always wondered where the pickle thing came from. My cravings were healthy ones up to month 7 - then it was combo burritos, and my teenaged nephews both worked at Del Taco...LOL, meant more crunches for me later!! (And you're right about the heat but it could be worse...L.A.'s been warm, but up in Butte County where my son lives it's been over 110!)
#22 - Posted 8/11/09 @1:10PM by mommy_of_zuzu [contact]

19 - Thanks for the chime - in, hon!

20 - That was really beautiful! I admit I feel as good as I do after yoga once I've read a Neil post.
