Decades Music Theme Park The Spirit of Radio Concert Hall details
Posted at 7:40AM | comments (35)

A couple of weeks ago I let you know about a new rock-and-roll-themed amusement park that will be built in Eloy, Arizona between Phoenix and Tucson called Decades Music Theme Park. It's currently still in the planning stages and they hope to begin construction next year with a target opening date in the fall of 2013. The park will feature interconnected Lands and Districts that represent each decade of rock music with interactive thrill rides, live music and other attractions including a Rush-themed concert hall. When I first reported the news the park's website had the name of the concert hall misspelled as the Spirit of the Radio Concert Hall rather than The Spirit of Radio Concert Hall. Apparently their website was flooded with emails from Rush fans about this small mistake along with many other comments/suggestions. The theme park's founder and Chief Creative Officer Marty West contacted me to let me know how much he appreciated everyone's feedback and that they had fixed their website. The description of the concert hall is now correctly titled and reads as follows:

The Spirit of Radio Concert Hall
Modeled from the Rush greatest hits album cover art "The Spirit of Radio"(Which originated from The album "Permanent Waves" released in 1980), this venue will be a more intimate indoor music theater. It will include 2,000 seats and serve as a regular space for tribute band performances, battle of the band competitions, a "New Artists' Exposure Series" and bands with smaller audience draws. We also hope to lure the VH1 Music Awards to host their annual event at this site on a rotating basis.

Mr. West also let me know that - as many had speculated - the facade of the building will look like the old radio depicted on the cover of Rush's The Spirit of Radio greatest hits package. Better yet, I made the suggestion (as many of you folks did) that they make the hall seat 2112 rather than 2000 and he loved the idea! He also sent along a few pictures which you can check out by clicking the thumbnails at the top of the post.

I want seat #2112 in that theatre. Wouldn't it be cool if Rush was at the Grand opening and played The Spirit of Radio?

and I'm at work. shh, don't tell the boss.

That park map reminds me of Kings Island in the 70's, minus the Hanna-Barbera characters. Maybe this new park can have fuzzy costumed rock stars walking around mussing up kids' hair, handing out balloons, and silently pantomiming all their rock-n-roll gestures.

We're influential now, how cool is that?!

#4 - Lamb Saag - A fuzzy Alex can muss my hair and give me balloons anytime!

This one's worth coming down out of the rafters for.

Looks like we'll be travelling "On the road to Adventure on a desert highway" and packing some serious SPF products.

I need to win this contest!! Actually, they should just give all of the RIAB crew one of these and call it a day.

Looking forward to RatCon this weekend. Can't wait to meet some of you. I should make it to Club Xanadu around 3 or 4pm on Saturday. :-)

Thanks to Lance, Petie and Kelly for making this happen!!

I'd actually pay to have Alex hand me a balloon and mess my hair....oooooh yeah!

I like how The Spirit of Radio concert hall is right at the entrance of the park.

I don't mean to sound like a curmudgeon, but a theme park dedicated to rock music makes me shudder. Oh, the tackiness of it all. Step right up to ride the Highway to Hell Rollercoaster. Get your face painted like Gene Simmons, then try a Stratocaster shaped lollipop. And the vomit choking rides inspired by real life events don't even require any creativity to come up with.

It's great, though, that there will be a concert hall there inspired by Rush and some interesting bands may actually get to play there. Although you have to at least chuckle a little that the hall is named Spirit of Radio, given the lyrics, Rush's popularity despite lack of radio play, and the current state of radio. Maybe the only thing more ironic would be a hall inspired by Elvis Costello's "Radio, Radio" tune.

1 & 2... You said too much. 'Geddys cute'? In fact, thats saying to much! lol! Ya know I'm yanking your chain!

Also, to all of those attending RatCon.... I hope that everyone has a blast. Enjoy yourselves, eachother and Rush!

have a great day everyone, going out on a salmon charter, having Rush on my Ipod.

Hmmmm....Though it would be interesting (to say the least), I have to agree with post #13about the tackiness and cheesiness of it all. Also, it seems a little unrealistic to me. Wouldn't there be an awful lot of copyright issues they'll have to overcome? I can't imagine all of those bands being willing to participate in such an endeavor. At the least, I'm sure they would want royalties, which would severely cut into profits, which could make the whole project financially unfeasible.

Not to be a party pooper or anything. In my youth, I frequently fantasized about a Rush-themed amusement park (as well as a "Lord of the Rings"-themed one). I just imagine there are some enormous hurdles to cross. Just think of the current economic situation. Who would fund such a project? Hey! Maybe they could get some stimulus money for it! It would definitely create jobs!

It's nice to see the park owners recognize Rush fans and address their concerns.

Keep in mind the park map is a conceptual drawing, which is just a very rough sketch to get planners and more importantly, investors a basic idea of what might happen. So to spend a lot of time commenting or critiquing the plan may be a waste of breath. The final layout will probably be much different. Numerous factors (including Dinoman's comments) probably have not been seriously addressed yet.

Also, not much has changed on the Decades site in the last year, which may indicate this project has stalled in light of the current economy. You don't have to look deep into your local news business section to see many construction projects delayed or abandoned. Amusement parks across the country are having financial woes or at least scaling back and/or cancelling new projects. As examples, With the failure last year of the Hard Rock Park at Myrtle Beach, SC. and Six Flags New Orleans still sitting unused since 2005 (after the hurricane) it's not a good time for the amusement industry overall, expecially for a new park like this.

That's not to say this won't happen, but I'm sure it's going to be a long road to completion. I hope we do get out Spirit of Radio concert hall...

#11 Thats cool! I love Stratocasters. So you're a lefty, eh?

Awesome job there.
#19 - Posted 6/10/09 @2:12PM by hermy [contact]

#18 & #11 I'm a lefty as well, but on the drums.

It's hard to find left handed drum sticks though. The Neil Peart signature ones are all right handed.

#13 - Not to be nit picky or sarcastic but it's actually on the map as the Thunderstruck Rollercoaster ha ha ha

"hello"
My name is LovLee and I'm a coasterholic

Can't wait for RatCon! Flying down tomorrow afternoon; so freaking excited!

While this idea of a rock and roll theme park may be cheesy, I'm still excited for it :D
#24 - Posted 6/10/09 @6:13PM by Craigg747 [contact]

I am psyched for this! Finally something completely killer awesome that is music oriented in Arizona!!!
#25 - Posted 6/10/09 @6:48PM by PetieLee [contact]

I can't wait for RatCon myself. I fly out tomorrow after work (have to save my vacation time for the tour next year, ha ha ha!) I'll be getting there late tomorrow night. Really excited to meet all the wonderful RIAB Rush Rats at Club Xanadu. It's gonna be awesome!

#14: Spin, I wish you could make it to RatCon so you could listen to me talk incessantly about just how gorgeous Geddy Lee is all weekend. Yes, I'll discuss the mullet for sure but the best part is I'll get to discuss how Geddy grew his gorgeous hair back and how amazing he looks in those sexy, black skinny jeans. I am sure I'll be discussing just how much I adored those open-neck shirts Geddy wore last tour. I could go on but I still have a lot to do in a very short amount of time...I'll just leave the thought as mmmm mmm Geddy-licious! :)

We're gonna have a blast. I just can't wait. For all you Rats that will miss RatCon this year...we'll be thinking about you and we'll take lots of pictures! We'll post them online!

Can't wait for the serious fun that's gonna be had, celebrating the best band in the universe: link :)

Time to scurry off and finish last minute considerations. *squeak* (Spindrifter, that squeak meant "Geddy's cute!" in female-Rat-Geddicorn language, lol!)

Love da Geddy! Miss da Geddy!

#27 - Posted 6/10/09 @7:47PM by RushFanForever [contact]

Man I wish I could be closer to where RatCon and RushCon are. Also to have the money to attend these things. Some people sure have it good in life.
#28 - Posted 6/10/09 @8:49PM by broughttoyoubytheletterj [contact]

They MUST make a standing sign (like the one on the second R-30 disc)that direct's live bands to "EXIT STAGE LEFT" & maybe an off & on sign for "A SHOW OF HANDS"... - miss ya Dirk, Lerxst, Pratt.
#29 - Posted 6/10/09 @10:29PM by Sub-Xanadu Man [contact]

I posted this in another thread further down but I'm also looking very forward to RatCon as well. Unfortunately I won't make it until probably around 4pm or so on Saturday. Hope I don't miss too much of the fun. :-) I can't wait to meet some fellow Rats and be surrounded by everything Rush!!

Thanks goes out again to Lance, Petie and Kelly D. You guys rock for getting this thing together!! See ya Saturday!!
#30 - Posted 6/10/09 @11:39PM by Zitro [contact]

We're looking forward to the Rat Gathering too, and here's my wish that everyone has Happy Trails
#31 - Posted 6/11/09 @7:00AM by Will Collier [contact]

Have to agree with those who think this is pie-in-the-sky stuff. Just one f'rinstance, that old Greenpeace curmudgeon Tom Scholz is going to give permission for a "Boston flying guitar ride" sometime just after never...
#32 - Posted 6/11/09 @7:13AM by craig [contact]

Did anyone look at that map? I have my doubts about the reality of the park. And if the coaster gets stuck, do the riders sue the band, too...?
#33 - Posted 6/11/09 @4:13PM by Spindrifter [contact]

Back in the mid 80s, I used to go to a place called 'Great America' in San Jose, Ca. It was the location for Beverly Hill Cop 3 or something like that. The place was just huge with what I thought huge rides, wrong!

But, I remembered how a friend and I talked back then about (while stuck mid way upside down for 10 mins) just how cool it'd be to find a music part such as this.

I think that when the place is done and the gates open, it'll be an awesome place to head to with the family!
#34 - Posted 6/11/09 @4:23PM by themadimmortalman [contact]

Eloy sucks.

It would be hard to come up with a crappier place. There have been several attempts at amusement parks being built along the I-10 corridor from Phoenix to Tucson. They sit there barely started and unfinished for years.

Maybe in 20 years, if it starts booming for the next 20 years. Seriously, if you'd ever been there, you'd know what I mean. It's BFE with a freeway exit.

So where are the Kinks in that THEME PARK? Couldnt find em!
