New early photo of Rush as Hadrian from the summer of 1969
Posted at 8:02AM | comments (73)

UPDATE - 4/1@9:37AM: Readers Keith W and Scott B sent in scans (see right) of the page from their Visions books with the correctly-labeled Rush Hadrian photo. The caption states Rush with Mitch Bossi. Case closed!

UPDATE - 3/31@9:34AM: Apparently a correctly-labeled version (with Mitch Bossi instead of Lindy Young) of the Hadrian 1969 photo is included in the now-out-of-print 1988 Rush biography Visions. If anyone has this book and can scan the photo/caption for us, let me know.

UPDATE - 3/30@2:01PM: Reader RUSHGIRL corroborates the story as well. Apparently the earlier, accurate photo of Hadrian was put out there by Lindy Young himself partly to clear up the fact that the Hadrian 1969 photo was mislabeled and it wasn't him in the photo. He's also shared the photo with the makers of the Rush documentary due out later this year.

UPDATE - 3/30@1:42PM: Several of you have noted that in the earlier photo of Hadrian - the one that's been floating around the net for as long as I can remember - the guys look markedly older than the later photo. I noticed this too and thought it was a bit odd. But I really had no other information to go on; that Hadrian 1969 photo has been around so long that most fans take it as the gospel truth. So then AnalogKidVideo emails me and tells me that the Hadrian 1969 photo was actually taken around 1971 and that the Lindy Young pictured isn't Lindy Young at all, but Mitch Bossi - information he claims was obtained from John Rutsey himself. Mitch Bossi was Rush's rhythm guitarist in early 1971 - so this would make a lot of sense and I tend to believe it. If true, that Hadrian 1969 photo isn't Hadrian nor is it 1969. It should be relabeled as Rush 1971! So here you go:

If anyone has evidence to the contrary - that the Hadrian 1969 photo is accurate - please let me know. But for now I think I'll go with this.

----- snip -----

Rush was formed back in 1968 by Alex Lifeson, Jeff Jones, and John Rutsey. Jones was soon replaced by Geddy Lee and the band would see several lineup changes and a couple of name changes until solidifying the Lifeson/Lee/Rutsey lineup in 1971. One of these incarnations was a band called Hadrian which was in existence from January through July of 1969. From January to May of that year Hadrian consisted of Geddy Lee on lead vocals and bass, Alex Lifeson on lead guitar, Lindy Young (Geddy's now brother-in-law) on keyboards and rhythm guitar, and John Rutsey on drums. There's been a photo of this lineup of Hadrian floating around the internet for years. Here it is:

In May of 1969, Geddy Lee was replaced by Joe Perna on bass/vocals for a couple of months before Hadrian broke up in July. I'd never seen a photo of this lineup and didn't know whether one even existed until reader RushFanForever recently discovered one while doing a Google image search. It came up on a genealogical page for the descendants of Salomon and Lydia Lindman (apparently these were Lindy Young's great grandparents). The photo is captioned as follows:

Joe Perna, Alex Lifeson, John Rutsey and Lindy Young (Louise's son) in the heavy metal group Hadrian (1969)

And here is the photo (for a higher-res version see here):

I have no reason to doubt the authenticity of this photo, and the images of Lifeson, Young and Rutsey certainly bear a resemblance to the trio from the earlier Hadrian photo, albeit with shorter hair. As an added bonus there's also this photo of Geddy's wife Nancy, Lindy and their sister Barbara with their mother Louise from 2006. Very interesting stuff.

Hey, Lerxst, Duane Allman called. He wants his mustache back.
#6 - Posted 3/30/09 @9:23AM by RushFanForever [contact]

I was trying to do a search for any later photos of John Rutsey after his departure from Rush in 1974 and unfortunately I could not find any. What I realized is that if you do an image search on Google for something, it brings up sites of information that you would not otherwise find in a normal search. So that is how the early photo of Alex and John came up when they were in the band "Hadrian". It was one of those happy accidents.
#7 - Posted 3/30/09 @10:12AM by scottc [contact]

I'm gonna start looking for images of Hush!
#8 - Posted 3/30/09 @10:53AM by State of Grace [contact]

Speechless on these photos... :D
#9 - Posted 3/30/09 @11:14AM by Lamb Saag [contact]

It was hard to recognize Alex in that 2nd photo. He seems to be channeling his inner Roger McGuinn (of The Byrds).
#10 - Posted 3/30/09 @11:19AM by Lamb Saag [contact]

(Also, doesn't it look as though Geddy has rotisserie roasters behind him? Hmm...)
#11 - Posted 3/30/09 @11:19AM by PetieLee [contact]

Excellent find! Love Geddy's hair in that one pic; however, the jury is definitely out on Alex's 'stache. *tee hee hee* :P

Very Geddy-licious way to start the week! Yay!

Love da Geddy! Miss da Geddy!
#12 - Posted 3/30/09 @11:20AM by PetieLee [contact]

#9: I was thinking more like Peter Tork of the Monkees.

Love da Geddy! Miss da Geddy!

Is it just me or do the guys in the photo look a little older than 16?
#14 - Posted 3/30/09 @12:59PM by rocinante5m [contact]

Ur right Lamb Saag, rotisseries indeed!!!

more like Hulk Hogan wants his mustache back...

What treasures! Thanks so much to RushFanForever for digging those up!
#16 - Posted 3/30/09 @1:36PM by RUSHGIRL [contact]

The picture of Hadrian, that is NOT Lindy Young in the line up.
#17 - Posted 3/30/09 @1:45PM by RUSHGIRL [contact]

Fixed!!!!!!!! :)
#18 - Posted 3/30/09 @2:05PM by AFarCryfromFBN [contact]

The second picture is mislabled I think. I don't think that is Alex or John in that picture. The other two were also in another band around the same time frame with other members. I really think this is a photo of the "other" group.
#19 - Posted 3/30/09 @2:08PM by solar federale

I first saw that picture in a Hold Your Fire era Rush biography.
#20 - Posted 3/30/09 @2:23PM by Spindrifter [contact]

Rushgirl... Very cool find and thanks for sharing.

Is Monday now labeled as 'Rush Sharing Day'? We should have more days like today!

Btw... I am very happy that they stuck with the same line up since 74. The one we now know as The Mighty Trio of Rats!

But, I would like to add that thats not Lindy Young or Mitch Bossi. (shhh, inside secret) Its really is really our very own Lamb Saag who was Rush's rhythm guitarist in early 1971.
#21 - Posted 3/30/09 @2:50PM by redbarchettoed

This is very interesting stuff. Just like watching the History Channel. I wish I had the time to search for this.
#22 - Posted 3/30/09 @3:16PM by mommy_of_zuzu [contact]

I never noticed Alex had a Neil-rivalling mustache in this pic until you guys pointed it out! gggg

I love those late mod clothes.

I don't know which one Nancy is in that other picture, but they are a beautiful family. Geddy surely is proud of his pretty red-haired girls.

Thanks much, RushFanForever & RushGirl!
#23 - Posted 3/30/09 @3:23PM by rocinante5m [contact]

Who's on first???
#24 - Posted 3/30/09 @3:44PM by hergest [contact]

mommy_of_zuzu...Nancy is on the left. She is very pretty!
#25 - Posted 3/30/09 @3:45PM by Margo [contact]

AMAZING, Alex does not even look like himself. He almost looks like a totally different person.
#26 - Posted 3/30/09 @3:46PM by RUSHGIRL [contact]

Further to the "family" picture. Far left if Nancy, Lindy, their younger sister Barbara and their mom.
#27 - Posted 3/30/09 @3:49PM by RUSHGIRL [contact]

#26 - DUH...........Ed wrote that in there already.
Sorry bout that.......:)
#28 - Posted 3/30/09 @3:58PM by mommy_of_zuzu [contact]

Hergest 24 - & Rushgirl 26 - Thanks, guys! I kind of thought that remembering that picture of her, Ged, and Julian when he was a baby 30 years ago ;-)

I agree she is very beautiful... inside and out if Ged loves her!
#29 - Posted 3/30/09 @4:01PM by mommy_of_zuzu [contact]

Margo 25 -

I know! The only thing I recognize is the curve of his lips! He's slouchy and his eyes are shaded. Nice clothes, though. It's kind of a funny picture, because Joe Perna and Lindy Young aren't ready for the camera.

Oh well, that was before digital cameras, too, so you couldn't check and see if it was worth keeping!
#30 - Posted 3/30/09 @4:28PM by TheHonestMan [contact]

Whoa, time to start brushing up on my RUSH history. I've got it down from '74 on, but before then is a little hazy.

Thanks for sharing everyone!!

#7 Scottc - Hahaha, let me know if you find one. Probably only Neil himself could produce a picture of Hush.
#31 - Posted 3/30/09 @4:34PM by TheHonestMan [contact]

Oh yeah -

Anyone know why Geddy was kicked out in 1969?
#32 - Posted 3/30/09 @4:45PM by musicofthespheres [contact]

Hadrian was emperor when the Roman Empire was at its geographical peak? (i had to google it...) just a coincidence that Mosbach is known as Praetorian (the emperor's guards) was he known as Praetorian B4 working for Rush? some kind of inside joke?

Anyway, Rush didn't conquer the world 'til Neil arrived...
#33 - Posted 3/30/09 @4:45PM by TheHonestMan [contact]

Sorry for all the posts, but I just found another cool picture of RUSH from the early days I had never seen before.

#34 - Posted 3/30/09 @4:55PM by Margo [contact]

You know after looking at this picture for a long time, I would say that Alex does not look that happy and perhaps he is irritated that Geddy is not around.

I'm with #5....Looks like Duane Allman!!!! They don't look like teenagers. The funny thing is...I look at John Rutsey in this photo, and I cannot picture him as a competitive bodybuilder.....The two just don't go together!!!
#37 - Posted 3/30/09 @7:02PM by rocinante5m [contact]

musicofthespheres,

i dont know this to be true, but i remember the first time seeing him walking around at the show and thought, wow, how freakin clever.....i go the feeling someone other than "Pratt" himself came up with that one in reference to what u are referring to......a clever little joke that stuck

WOW!!! What a hairdew Alex!!! Very Phallic...
#39 - Posted 3/30/09 @8:14PM by Neil_Rulz [contact]

So Rush had "Mailbox Head" before Guns 'N' Roses had "Buckethead". Cool!

#30 - I agree. As with a lot of band the early days are hard to keep track of. Maybe if there was some official, reliable way to create a time line here.

Ed and any "Rush insiders" could help.

kelly, i don't know either, but in this interview Ed posted 3.5 years ago, she mentions hearing Rush when she was in high school...

Why was there ever any confusion? This picture of Rush was publised in the "Visions" book years ago, and is very clearly labeled "Rush with Mitch Bossi."
#54 - Posted 3/31/09 @8:00AM by RushFanForever [contact]

What I would like to see is a photo of Alex, John Rutsey and bassist Jeff Jones from the early days.

I checked bassist Jeff Jones website and could not find any photos of that band incarnation. I wonder if he has any that he may consider putting up.

link

Or any with Geddy who was in Judd or Ogilvie.

How about a photo of Geddy onstage with Santana at Woodstock?...... er, uh...

Wouldn't that rock?!

I'm so proud of Alex and John for having a black guy in the band. We take it for granted now, but that may have raised some eyebrows back then. Or not. Look at Jimi H.
#59 - Posted 3/31/09 @11:24AM by mommy_of_zuzu [contact]

46 & 47 -

Kelly & RRF - I'll bet she's 20 years younger. When I saw her picture in her book, I cried, "GO NEIL!" She's a knockout! She looks like Catherine Zeta-Jones!

I for one am forever grateful to her for loving Neil.
#60 - Posted 3/31/09 @12:59PM by Margo [contact]

# 58 I think its great myself that Alex and John had Jeff in the band. My ex hubby had a black guy in his band for a little while. Anyway it just goes to show that Alex and probably John were not concerned with skin color if he was a talented musician and had a friendly personality.
#61 - Posted 3/31/09 @1:00PM by Margo [contact]

# 44 Does anyone know where Charlene and Carrie were when the pictures were taken? and what was Carrie photographing in the 2nd picture??
#62 - Posted 3/31/09 @2:41PM by Pat [contact]

#53, and Ed, etc: I have "Visions" right here in front of me, and while it does include the photo, on page 7, there's no caption at all (none of the photos in the book are captioned). "Mitch Bossi" is not mentioned anywhere near the photo in the main text, either. The text surrounding the photo deals with Geddy's band Judd (renamed from Ogilvie) and then the "reformed" Rush. I don't have time to read the whole book, but in scanning nearby pages, I don't see any mention of Bossi.

That said, I just flipped through all the other Rush bio books, and "Chemistry" does show that photo, on page 23. The photo itself says, in pixellated text "Hadrian 1969," and it has the guys' names below. It looks like a lower-resolution version of the picture in this very post (the one that someone has crossed over to say "Rush 1971"), BUT the "Chemistry" book has its own callout box covering up the name below the sitting guy. The callout says "The line-up with Mitch Bossi." So it's partly correct, I guess...

I don't have a good way/time to scan these, but trust me. I have all the books right here.
#63 - Posted 3/31/09 @4:28PM by GeddyRulz [contact]

Thanks for setting the record straight vis-a-vis that "Hadrian 1969" picture. It's made its way around the Net with somebody's bullshit labelling on it, and even into "Chemistry" that way. I've been screaming around the Net for years that it's NOT "Hadrian 1969" and NOT "Lindy Young."

Banasiewicz labelled the man in the photo as Mitch Bossi, which would make it RUSH (not Hadrian, which Bossi never played in) and make it the spring of 1971 (not 1969; Bossi was only with Rush for a few months in '71).

#62, I don't know about YOUR copy of "Visions," but mine is the same as #53's... the pic is labelled "Rush with Mitch Bossi." And SEVERAL of the other pics are also labelled, such as "Gary and Alex at Fisherville Junior High."
#64 - Posted 3/31/09 @4:35PM by GeddyRulz [contact]

Oh, another clue that it's not Hadrian in the picture: Geddy's in the photo, and (like Bossi) GEDDY NEVER PLAYED IN HADRIAN! Hadrian was Alex's and John's band during a temporary breakup of Rush; Geddy was in Ogilvie/Judd during that time.
#65 - Posted 3/31/09 @6:13PM by Pat [contact]

#63: Hmm. I guess there are different versions of "Visions." Mine has only a very few captions in it (i.e. p. 26 "Neil, Alex and Geddy with their wives"). I was wrong about none of the photos being captioned, but I'm still sure that the infamous not-Hadrian photo is not captioned here.

I believe I got mine when it came out in 1988. Mine's from Omnibus Press, printed in Scotland. It doesn't say anything about first edition or anything though.

In response to #62 by Pat and #63 by GeddyRulz, it appears that author Jon Collins is aware of the photo mistake which is supposed to say Mitch Bossi and Rush below:

link

Click on the link where it says "printable pdf". The comment on the photo mistake on page 23 is there.
#69 - Posted 4/1/09 @2:32AM by GeddyRulz [contact]

Yep, Jon Collins - to his credit - created a website where he could make corrections to his book. (Unfortunately, Robert Telleria, editor of the grossly inaccurate "Mereley [sic] Players," left his many errors uncorrected.) Several people wrote to Jon with a correction to the photo's caption, myself included (that first comment, from Mark Daniels, is mine). Jon has made ammends as best he could.

Argument over whether it's Mitch Bossi or Lindy Young aside, even if it WAS Lindy (which I'm nearly 100% sure it isn't), it STILL couldn't be a photo of "Hadrian 1969" because GEDDY is in the picture and Geddy never played in Hadrian.

I found this website below which maybe the Robert Telleria page with some info below:

Really nice to pop in here and see the record set straight on the two photos. I immediately saw that the two other gents in the newly discovered photo were not Bossi or Ged. But since some folks cannot tell the difference between a headboard and a Viking ship prow I left this one alone. :-)

I wonder if any of you have seen the little gem I just sent to Ed. It is most likely the first official promo release photo of RUSH. (Ed - Check your email)
#73 - Posted 4/3/09 @2:59AM by Peartdrumsticks [contact]

Careful #70 ... Please lets not send anyone to that misleading piece of crap. That book is the worst example of a band Bio ever published. The author of that book is a plagiarist and had no original material of their own. The author stole every bit of information word for word from other books and magazines and just compiled them in one and then took credit for all the works as their own.
