Full Geddy Lee Entertainment Weekly interview now online
Posted at 2:25PM | comments (29)

[Rush's Geddy Lee talks about 'I Love You, Man,' 'Colbert,' and their new compilation]

Over the weekend I posted a scan of a one-page Geddy Lee feature in the March 20th edition of Entertainment Weekly titled Three Rounds With...Geddy Lee which included a few teaser snippets from a Geddy Lee interview. The full interview was posted online yesterday at the Entertainment Weekly website. In it Geddy talks about the band's I Love You Man cameo, their Colbert Report appearance, Retrospective 3 and other topics including this bit regarding whether there is any unreleased Rush material:

... There isn't. None. There's lots of unreleased live material. Hours. Months. But there's no [studio] material that we've recorded and not released. It's like this: if we're working on a song where we don't love it enough to put it on the record, we throw it away. If we're disappointed in them, we trash them.

Thanks to Power Windows for the heads up.

BTW ladies and gentlemen.....They played the Geddy Lee interview with Bob and Tom a couple days ago....naturally it was basically the same old boring stuff....except for the last question....when asked about recording and touring, Geddy did say that they would be touring next Summer, so everything continues to be backed up with the spoken word, and it looks like we'll have something to look forward to (and save our pennies for) next Summer.....I can't wait!!!!

six six six six six six six six six

I loved that article. Geddy is so funny!!

They really should be in more movies :0

Cheers to the tour next summer!!!

Geddy:
"There's lots of unreleased live material. Hours. Months."

Anyone interested in a COMPLETE Permanent Waves tour show?

Now we know there's a chance.
I wish RUSH would offer the shows for sale. They could get someone to go through all of them, make them available for download on their site and charge maybe a couple/five ??bucks for each one.
Sounds like a winner to me.

Ocho!

You have to give it to Geddy and Alex, even though most of these interviews cover the same old ground, they have a way of keeping their answers fresh and interesting! Class acts they are!

Hemisfears - Most bands issue a huge box set of greatest hits or reissues of their studio albums. How about a Rush box set of tour recordings. Hmm, 19 studio albums, 19 concert CDs, how sweet would that be. Charge what you like!

I wonder how much concert video they have hidden?

Hmm....

Gawd, I love reading Geddy's interviews- he's just so clever! And I can picture the words coming out of his beautiful mouth in his patented soft-spoken tone. . . ooohhh!

Geddy Lee makes me laugh out loud! Very clever and very real! RUSH ON!

I normally don't do this, but I love a great power trio. The Muggs are in a contest right now and they need all of the help they can get. They remind me of an early Rush. The bass player has to play on the keyboard as he had a stroke several years ago, but the band waited for him to recover and learn the keys. They have a great Detroit, old school rock sound which is rare these days. Here is the vote link www.myspace.com/briggsbattleofthebands You can vote for them 10 times per day all at once. Thank you to my fellow Rushians!

The four highlights of yet another witty interview with Geddy for me were:

- We're ridiculously sensible, the three of us. We like to joke that we're one of the few working democracies in the world today.

- We usually send each other a bunch of emails. Management will make suggestions, and we'll try to ignore as many of their suggestions as possible. [Laughs]

- If I had my druthers it would be a boxed set of three discs. But that's not very practical. I would like to spend some time at some point doing some creative boxed sets. I think that would be fun.

- Sometimes the s---ty things in life do point you in a more positive direction.

SO TRUE!!! LIVE - LAUGH - LOVE - LIFE...

I would still wager that they recorded at least SOME of the abandoned Sir Gawain and The Green Night song. They can deny it all they want; I bet it exists and will eventually surface.
#16 - Posted 3/18/09 @10:44PM by Ricbass4003 [contact]

They have admitted to picking clean other songs for instrumentals. This is totally acceptable to me. RUSH is the only band that can do 4 instrumentals in concert and get away with it. Think about it.

Can you imagine the stuff that doesn't make it past their quality control. It is probably still good stuff.

It is very nice of them to indulge us in some rare stuff and different things. They know we are waiting for pellets.

It would be cool if they would make a DVD of their writing/recording sessions much like the MVI version of S&A. That was cool although it would probably be annoying to them. The behind the scenes stuff is always very facinating.
#17 - Posted 3/19/09 @3:02AM by main monkey business [contact]

How 'bout a CD of just instrumentals??? Just think...La Villa, YYZ, Leave that Thing Alone, MMB, Malignant, etc....all on one disc???? And put that in the box set??? I'm buying!!!!

Well, I'm confused: what about the "unreleased" alternate version of Working Man??

Geddy (and Alex and Neil) are always trying to smother the rumors of unreleased studio material, but I suspect that's a wee white lie.

"if we're working on a song where we don't love it enough to put it on the record, we throw it away. If we're disappointed in them, we trash them."

The funny thing is that their so called "trash" is probably better than anything a working band today puts out.

#17 I have always wondered why they haven't done a compilation of their wonderful instrumentals. My buisiness partner and I are thinking about putting together our own. Their instrumentals kick ass.

In response to comment # 19 by Lamb Saag, I believe it is the guitar solo that is an alternate take on "Working Man", not the actual song itself. It would not really count as being another song. :) This info is according to the Rock Band interview that Alex and Geddy did awhile back.

Help!

Chicago-area RIAB fans!

Johnny B on the Loop this morning was talking about
"I Love You Man" and Rush's involvement in the movie.

But I missed most of it
(I turned on the radio at the very very end after walking the kids up to school)

What did I miss??? Thanks for any help

I know this has nothing to do with Rush or this blog but I just wanted to mention that today is 27 years since Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osbourne's awesome guitarist) died. I really am surprised at just how fast time has flown since 1982 when he took off to The Great Gig in the Sky. Cheers, Randy!

Love da Geddy! Miss da Geddy!

Back when Counterparts was released, Geddy said on the radio special for that album that they'd recorded a "slow, country version" of Cold Fire, but that they weren't going to release it (going from memory now), "Until after we're dead, so our manager can make a few bucks."
#26 - Posted 3/19/09 @1:19PM by axe [contact]

I hate to argue with Geddy about Rush's back catalog, but they do have unreleased songs, such as "Fancy Dancer", "Garden Road" et al. I've only heard live cuts of those songs, but they still do exist. I'm sure Alex has some old tapes stashed away in his home studio, collecting dust...
#27 - Posted 3/19/09 @5:39PM by RushFanForever [contact]

In regards to comment # 26 by axe - here is a Rush fan website called "Rush At Resist" where it shows the evolution of the band before the 1974 self-titled album and before Neil joined:

link

It lists the originals and cover songs recorded in the late 60's and early 70's. I am sure that Rush could piece together another album out of these as they are or re-record them. Another option would be to include them on a possible future box set with "Tough Break" and "Battlescar".

#24 Wall05 - Where are you??

I know people by there, but you would never get me to go.
I heard it was pretty disastrous last year.

Did you go last year to?
