Rush to tour South America in late 2009?
Posted at 10:21AM | comments (136)

UPDATE - 12/30@2:20PM: Many thanks to everyone who sent in a translation. Here's one from reader GeddyJr who happens to be a professional Spanish translator:

Rush is packing its bags for Chile

As with Queen, the station (Canal 13) got together with local producers and came to an agreement to bring the trio here in 2009. It's one of the most anticipated performances in recent memory.

Almost like Radiohead or Madonna, for years the arrival of the Canadian trio Rush has been one of the greatest unfulfilled promises of local megaevents and the confessed dream of an enormous community of devoted fans that grew up in the rock-and-roll virtuosity of the 70's.

Despite often the multitude of rumors (a while back it was said that they would come in May), the negotiations now offer solid evidence of progress. Eventos 13, the concert production office of Canal 13, met with two local producers almost a month ago and closed a financial deal for the group's debut in Santiago.

Initially, the plan was to bring the group here in March, but problems with the group's schedule and the abundance of events during that month precluded that possibility. The last date that was agreed upon is during the last few months of next year. [Translator's note: Keep in mind that the seasons are reversed in South America, so this will be a summer tour in late 2009.] The venue hasn't been decided yet, but industry sources are sure that the Canadians' elevated price tag and strong drawing power in Chile will demand an arena capacity of more than 15,000.

Even the National Stadium has been considered. Chile's last game in World Cup qualifying is during the first week of October, and the stadium's availability and capacity both make it the best choice for the event. Other options would be the Pista Atlética (Sports Stadium) or the Club Hípico (Horse Track), which will host Iron Maiden on March 22. Furthermore, managers of Calle Blanco Encalada have organized a meeting in the next few days with executives of UC-TV - the same people that agreed to participate in Queen's recent show in November, produced by DG Medios.

Rush's tour through Latin America, which will also include Brazil and Argentina, would be an incredible realignment of effort. The band closed its "Snakes & Arrows" tour on July 24 in Indianapolis and has said that they will rest in 2009. This could be a real treat for their South American fans, the greatest Rush fans in the world. Many Chileans traveled to Brazil in 2002 and appear in the DVD that the group recorded in that country.

----- snip -----

Chilean newspapper El Mercurio is reporting that Rush is in negotiations to tour South America sometime late next year. The article is in Spanish but from what I can glean from it, the band would potential play several dates at larger arenas (15000+) in Chile, Argentina and Brazil. If anyone is willing to translate the article, I'd really appreciate it; my Spanish is mediocre at best. The article talks about how originally the band was supposed to tour South America last May, as I'd reported on this site. It also mentions how this would be an unprecedented move since the band closed out the Snakes & Arrows tour back in July and have stated that they'd be taking most of 2009 off. Here's the original article in Spanish and here is the loose Google translation. If true, this is great news for all the South American fans. More as I learn it and I'll try to get a better translation of the article. Thanks to Hugo F for the heads up.

Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirst!

Red Bar, Pelican, Hemisferios-be on the look out!
#2 - Posted 12/30/08 @10:32AM by mtb2112 [contact]

Interesting-- Surprising news, but I guess it could make some sense-- perhaps the idea is to help fund the production of the new studio record...
#3 - Posted 12/30/08 @10:41AM by LanceTheShred [contact]

BTW brothers-I know you all are in Puerto Rico but you must have some contacts in South America!

Question: How many rats would be willing to take the trip if this was true?
#4 - Posted 12/30/08 @10:45AM by Wall05

WHOOO!!!! I hope this is true!

If so we should organize a RIAB trip to at least one of the shows!!!!
#5 - Posted 12/30/08 @10:48AM by antonioperu

I read the Mercurio article and it says that channel 13 with other producers gathered to bring RUSH to CHILE it sounds pretty serious though we have to wait for THE GUYS, they have the final word you know, I hope they can come to Peru as well anyway let´s wait for a miracle HAPPY NEW YEAR to ALL RUSH fans around the world...
#6 - Posted 12/30/08 @10:57AM by gag2man [contact]

If so, they'd better move YYZ up in the setlist.
#7 - Posted 12/30/08 @10:59AM by dwman [contact]

Wouldn't be a huge surprise if they did. If they were originally slated to play, but couldn't for scheduling reasons, this would be a way to play the shows without committing to a full blown tour and pick up some "gas money" along the way. Since they're officially no longer with Atlantic, it would also a great way to fund the next recording and receive most of the profits of sales. Hope it happens for fans in S. America.
#8 - Posted 12/30/08 @11:08AM by timintey [contact]

I say we rent the Partridge Family bus, gas it up, pick up all the Rush freaks and road trip it.

That was an interesting translation by Google :)

Ed, I just sent you a translation (through your Contact form). Ultimately, you got the basic information right.

If they were to play in Uruguay, I'd go! I have family there.

I hope this is true...we´ll be waiting!

Bring us RUSH!

Sure why not? Go out with a bang and tour the Americas!!!

#3 Big Shred

If there's a massive, big dirty rat, RIAB contingent that heads down to the Southern Hemisphere to get their yearly fix of RUSH with a side mission to make South American bartenders and restaurant owners rich... oh... you know I'm in! :)

MEANWHILE IN AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE:

"Rush To Tour South America" can be made into prophetic anagrams:

Thou Choirmaster Tour USA --> Our band is coming back again, woo-hoo!

Toot Our Amateurish Crush --> We're glad to tell everyone we're BFF with Rush!

Courthouse Amour Rat Shit --> RIABers love these tour rumors so much we're willing to litigate!
#19 - Posted 12/30/08 @2:04PM by TMMB [contact]

Oh hell..I'm jealous for you guys in S. America but you deserve it! :) I hope it's true for you guys cause you missed them on the last tour. That would be so cool if they headed south. Rock on Rush!!!
#20 - Posted 12/30/08 @2:17PM by Hemisferios [contact]

The missed the 30th anniversary tour as well.

Consider this just an opinion (I have no special "insider info" on the subject) but, being chilean and a hardcore Rush fan, I'm taking this with a pinch of salt.

Rush playing in Chile cretainly is a dream and an unfulfilled promise, but it's also a urban legend, sort of. It has been announced in the news here several times -negotiations being made, etc.- by the chilean press, to no avail. This time, there's a bad omen: as in the other ocasions, Claudio Vergara is the journalist doing the report.... he's a huge Rush fan (we went to the same school) and he has reported in the media that Rush is coming at least 4 times (the first one was in a newspaper called La Nacion, around the time of the Vapor Trails tour).

I'm not giving any credit to the news UNTIL THERE'S A STATEMENT FROM THE BAND CONFIRMING THE TOUR. All else is crap, for me at least. I've been lured to think that Rush is coming too many times now, and dreams are not a thing to be played with in such a reckless way.

I'll try to get in touch with Claudio to find out how solid is the evidence this time around. I hope it is, but I fear it could be yet another caffeine rush from him.

That one is good but Mine is good too. Spanish is a bit different though.

13 Events Organizer, the concert production area of UC-TV;

Rush prepares its bags for Chile

Like it did with Queen, the channel has merged with local producers and an accord was reached to bring the trio in 2009. It is one of the most awaited shows in recent times.

PATRICIA CERDA F. Y CLAUDIO VERGARA

Almost like Radiohead or Madonna. For many years, the visit from the Canadian trio Rush is one of the big debts (to the people) from the local mega-events and also the confessed dream of a huge community of grown devotees with the virtuoso rocker (the band) from the 70's.

Despite being spread like a rumor (some time ago it was said that they would show up in May), now the negotiations offer concrete steps: Events 13, the area of production of Channel 13, became associated with two local producers and a deal was closed about a month ago for the bands debut in Santiago.

At the beginning, the plan was designed to bring the band in March, but the possibility was aborted due to problems with the band's schedule and the numerous concerts being presented during that month (see items?). The last date set is during the last quarter of next year. Still, the site has not been decided but industry sources state that the elevated costs of the Canadians and its high audience in Chile could require a venue for more than 15 thousand people.

The National Stadium has also been though of: the last game of Chile for the world playoffs is during the first week of October; thereafter the place might be available. Other options would be the Athletic Track or the Race Track that will receive Iron Maiden on March 22. Furthermore, the people in charge of the site at Calle Blanco Encalada have a meeting set during the next few days with executives from UC-TV. These are the same ones that reached the accord to participate on the recent show by Queen in November, which is produced by DG Media.

The path of Rush through Latin America, which would also include Brazil and Argentina, would be an incredible movement of songs: the band closed its tour "Snakes and Arrows" on July 24 in Indianapolis and has said it will rest in 2009. It may all be a treat for its Latin fans, the most loyal of fans: many Chileans traveled to Brazil in 2002 and appear on the DVD that the band recorded in that country.

I do hope this is true because they are such great fans and deserve the chance to see Rush again.

:) Great news!!! I thought they would take next year off for what they have said in interviews, so I had lost hope for a South American tour. I hope this is true and they'll come to Argentina!!!

Hey Ed, thanks for the great news! This is it, it will be Rush's B-sides tour. Hey Gourdy Lee, where is your proposed setlist?
#29 - Posted 12/30/08 @4:00PM by patrush

Here is a google translation to Filipino, which I thought could be of use to our Filipino Rush fans!

PATRICIA CERDA F. Y CLAUDIO VERGARA

Oh my, some have a little bit too much time on their hands today!

This is great news and I hope it works out! This is long overdue for our friends in the Southern Hemisphere!

And who knows, a new setlist? A swing through the north on their way home? Hmm...
#32 - Posted 12/30/08 @5:35PM by PetieLee [contact]

...as long as that setlist contains "Nocturne"!!! ;)

Imagine that - Rush in South America?! Sounds awful tempting to me! Rush can always swing by Minneapolis/St. Paul on their way back to Toronto...tee hee hee!

Love da Geddy! Miss da Geddy!
#33 - Posted 12/30/08 @5:43PM by TXRaider [contact]

Not to be Buzz Killington here, but what makes anyone think this is actually going to happen? Alex and Geddy have given several interivews over the past few months and neither have even given the slightest hint that they were going back on the road next year. In fact, they clearly said they were taking a break. Now this? Out of thin air? Of course, I can imagine what $ort of per$ua$ion they $aw when $uch an offer wa$ made. I hope it happens...but I'm not seeing it.
#34 - Posted 12/30/08 @5:49PM by Armeee [contact]

So let me get this straight.

The band announces that they need a break and will not tour in 2009.
Some Chilean TV station has a big fat cheque and dangles it in front of the band.
Band may tour because of big fat cheque.

My name is Jeff Spicoli and I stopped a convenience store robbery. With the reward money I am going to hire Van Halen..... I mean RUSH to play my birthday party.
"Remember that movie"

MY POINT BEING...... IF IT IS CASH THAT GETS THEM OFF THE COUCH, THEN I DONATE MY $50 CHRISTMAS CHEQUE FROM MY AUNT DOREEN!
#35 - Posted 12/30/08 @5:56PM by emily0624 [contact]

GeddyJr rocks, if he (she?) reads these comments. I love "precluded" and I love "realignment of effort." That's some good translation, right there. :)
#36 - Posted 12/30/08 @6:25PM by musicofthespheres [contact]

emily0624 (#35) rocks for pointing out how good GeddyJr's translation is! :) Rush fans have class...
#37 - Posted 12/30/08 @6:29PM by BallStalum96 [contact]

I think that I am jealous as hell but happy for our S American Rush fans. We forget that the guys will always tour across N America and Eurpoe, but for them, this might just be a once in a lifetimer.....

And I am already trying to work out logistics to be in attendance at least one show. Probably impossible, but I can try......
#38 - Posted 12/30/08 @7:06PM by musicofthespheres [contact]

remistofeles (#21) said it best so far:

"UNTIL THERE'S A STATEMENT FROM THE BAND CONFIRMING THE TOUR. All else is crap, for me at least. I've been lured to think that Rush is coming too many times now, and dreams are not a thing to be played with in such a reckless way."

would be sweet though if it's a warm-up tour...take a break from writing and test some new songs live while treating the SoAm fans and traveling at a leisurely pace...
#39 - Posted 12/30/08 @7:24PM by Spindrifter [contact]

If true, I would be very happy for the So. American fans. Although, I just cant see em packing their bags for a few shows down there.

So, I am willing to bet that if this is fact true.... The trio will be doing the 'b-side' tour starting in So. America and ends in Ontario.

Hmm... Is Neil ready to return to his day job or does he know yet?
#40 - Posted 12/30/08 @8:24PM by rocinante5m [contact]

The question is, who will be the lucky dude alongside The Professor catching and feeling those visuals.......

The prediction is they will kick it old style and introduce 2 new tunes down South.....and Closer to The Heart will be echoing of the Andes......

Lance you don't miss a beat bro....well other than predicting scores......
#41 - Posted 12/30/08 @8:59PM by blake2112 [contact]

First off, if this is true they need to make another DVD. The fans in South America put the US, Canada, and European fans to shame. Imagine the production value of the Snakes and Arrows DVD with the electricity of the Rush in RIO crowd. You could have the greatest concert DVD in the history of rock.

Now if they did a B sides set list here is what I would like to hear (in order of each album)

What your Doing
Fly by Night
Beneath, Between & Behind
Lakeside Park
The Necromancer
2112 entire song
La Villa Strangiato
Jacobs Ladder (abbreviated)
The Camera Eye(abbreviated)
YYZ (They have to play it)
The Analog Kid
Digital Man
Marathon
Turn the Page
Ghost of a Chance
Leave that thing Alone!
Carve away the stone
Freeze
Faithless
We hold on
#42 - Posted 12/30/08 @9:18PM by patrush

#41 - They will NOT record audio or DVD for this show. I thought about that, when I wrote my earlier post and decided not to advocate it. The reason is plain simple. The first show in a tour is never that great. Of course, it is fine for the fans, because they haven't heard the band in a long time, but the first show always contains mistakes of various sorts. This is simply because the band isn't fully warmed up yet. They are at their best, usually, after maybe 10 shows or so (the number is probably way off, but my point is that they need several shows to warm up properly), this is when they hit most of the notes correctly. Most notably, Geddy's singing is way off during the first show. Then it gets really good later during the tour.
#43 - Posted 12/30/08 @10:14PM by Rob [contact]

Sorry to be the limp dick at a whore convention...but I believe this to be nothing but a rumor. I didn't believe the 2009 US tour rumor, and I don't believe this one. I do think that Rush will play South America again someday..but not in '09

Of course if I'm wrong, I already have my flame proof suit on!!lol
#44 - Posted 12/30/08 @11:25PM by Kelly D [contact]

This is all very strange but kind of cool to think about. While there may be no merit to the rumor, it's still fun to consider!

STABRAPH = I'm not touching this one!
#45 - Posted 12/30/08 @11:37PM by Spindrifter [contact]

Ugh.... Rush touring South America, limp d!cks at a whore convention and Kelly D nails it in the head with #44 ~ 'While there may be no merit to the rumor, it's still fun to consider!'

Ed, I think its time to reopen the Rush pub and let a few of us swing naked from the chandelers! (he-he)
#46 - Posted 12/30/08 @11:51PM by Ricbass4003 [contact]

I hope this isn't the BIG surprise we were waiting for. I hate to say it but that would be a let down although i'd be happy for the rats down south. I would never be able to partake in a road trip because of lack of peso.
#47 - Posted 12/31/08 @12:44AM by LargerBowl2008 [contact]

Southern California to Southern America for a RUSH concert. I don't think so. Good for South America though.
#48 - Posted 12/31/08 @1:11AM by Pat [contact]

Alternate translator's note: Yes, the seasons are reversed in much of South America, but summer doesn't start until December 21, so this would be a spring tour.

Nevertheless, thanks to GeddyJr.
#49 - Posted 12/31/08 @9:28AM by Kelly D [contact]

Thanks Spindrifter!

I was listening to Alice Cooper's radio show last night and he played "2112 Overture/The Temples of Syrinx"! I knew I liked him ;) I had never heard that on the radio. Rock 102 isn't known for much Rush love though of course they play the Big 4.
#50 - Posted 12/31/08 @9:58AM by TMMB [contact]

#43 There was an offer on the table from LiveNation for Rush to tour the US in 2009...so technically, that was not a rumor.
Although, that is not to say that this S. American tour has any merit. Guess we'll wait and see.
#51 - Posted 12/31/08 @10:13AM by AFarCryfromFBN [contact]

IF the South American tour happens in late 09, my bet is it will be another extension of the S&A 07 & 08 tour.

Those folks have not seen RUSH so they will definately not be doing b-sides, they will bring the big ones.

Now, if they get in the studio and have an album or at least an EP ready to release, they might tour on it with the bulk of the remaining time used for a couple of big ones and a bunch of b-siders. If that is the case, I think we might see something like this:

New Release - OCT/NOV 09
South American Tour - OCT/NOV 09
US/Canada Tour - MAR-JUL 10
Western European Tour - Mid Oct-Dec 10
Eastern European Tour (including Australia, Japan, and China) Feb-Mar 11

It will be billed as the "Farwell to Touring" Tour.

Of course none of this is likely to happen.
#52 - Posted 12/31/08 @10:33AM by Rob [contact]

#50 I'm sure this offer from eventos 13 is legitimate also, but if an offer is made.. then promoted before Rush/Anthem signs off on it (as was the case with Live Nation) It is indeed then just a rumor.

The guys have mentioned in interviews for years that they don't like having a commitmment/dedline hanging over their heads.

They need this time off to recover from the last three years. When they are READY, they will begin working again....probably on another album..not preparing for a foreign tour.
#53 - Posted 12/31/08 @10:45AM by Zitro [contact]

I'm leaning with remistofeles: I won't believe it until the band announces it.

But the speculation sure is fun, isn't it?

Still, I think Rush have too much personal & musical integrity to just go out a play a few cities just for the $$
#54 - Posted 12/31/08 @11:12AM by Pat [contact]

Zitro: So it's fine to play a lot of cities for money, but not a few? I don't see this as a question of integrity. Rush certainly plays music because they love it, but they wouldn't tour so much (at all) if they didn't get paid. That said, I'm with you: I don't think the newspaper article is a guarantee of anything. If the band announces it, then I'll believe it.
#55 - Posted 12/31/08 @11:22AM by Joe

Rush did warm-up tours in the 80s. This could be the modern day equivalent.
#56 - Posted 12/31/08 @11:25AM by Zitro [contact]

#54 Ok, Pat, good point, color me chastized lol!

Their production costs must be HUGE. How could they do it on such a limited basis and break even?

Happy New Year to everyone, and everyone you love!
#57 - Posted 12/31/08 @11:30AM by AFarCryfromFBN [contact]

#55 - Joe, if they use it as a warm-up tour, we could see something like #51.

#56 - Zitro, Good point on the production costs, but we are probably talking 15000 plus per each sold-out show!! I would bet they could turn profit on just 4 or 5 shows if they are that size. Rush's cost for a concert should not change much (if any) based on the size of the venue.

Wishing everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR of HEALTH and HAPPINESS!!!

Speaking of happiness, I hope the speculation of a South American tour is true for the spectacular fans there! I would love to be with the South American fans surrounded by their AWESOME energy a Rush concert!!! That would definitely go on my bucket list :D

However, I am confused because Geddy & Alex have been saying that they are taking a break this year. But anything can happen or not happen. We'll have wait and see...
#59 - Posted 12/31/08 @1:43PM by bravado34 [contact]

#43, Rob your killng me, that's hilarious...

Like everyone else, I hope they do tour down south cause you would think after a year (of resting) that they might want to end the touring machine by visiting places they probably wouldn't go to again and then ramp up and end stateside in late 09' or 2010...
#60 - Posted 12/31/08 @1:47PM by hermy [contact]

Ok...my take....

It will NOT be a B-sides tour. They are going to play all the standards as well as Snakes and Arrows.......South America isn't going to shell out big money to have them play B-sides......ain't going to happen.

They will not have new material.

This isn't a rumor......if they go or not might still be up in the air but negotiations are under way.

Saying they were taking a break in 09 doesn't mean diddly..........Alex and Geddy give generic answers all the time to interviews.

This will not lead to a tour anywhere else.

I'm already looking in arrangements for going. I wouldn't miss this one!

.....now back to your regularly scheduled broadcast.

Coffee Talk.

I'll give you a topic. Caress of Steel was neither about Caressing nor Steel. Discuss.

seriously, why is that album titled so? any thoughts appreciated.
#62 - Posted 12/31/08 @3:12PM by Pat [contact]

Zitro, I meant no offense. Of course, it'd have to be worth Rush's while to go, but the article seems to include that ("industry sources are sure that the Canadians' elevated price tag and strong drawing power in Chile will demand an arena capacity of more than 15,000"). Also, we all know that Rush wouldn't do a half-assed show. They'd bring the whole lights/pyro/video setup, which, for just a few dates, would be a high cost-per-show. But still, whether they go to South America in 2002 or in late 2009, those costs would be about the same. The difference would be that they were on a continuous tour for Vapor Trails, and now they've got everything in storage and some of the crew might be on other jobs...

As for "Caress of Steel," it sounds very knighty, medieval, but I don't think I've heard the phrase outside of the Rush context. It reminds me of "Hell Bent for Leather" or "British Steel" by Judas Priest: titles that connote that testosterone-driven hard rock sound. "Caress of Steel" is not a great Rush album title, in my humble opinion...
#63 - Posted 12/31/08 @3:20PM by patrush

Steel is probably just a reference to metal (e.g. heavy metal, hard rock). No point in over-analyzing Rush lyrics or album titles.

I really think that if they tour SA in 2009, they should open the show with a hard-rocking version of BASTILLE DAY.
#64 - Posted 12/31/08 @3:20PM by glortiz [contact]

Well, we know that Caress of Steel was dedicated to Rod Sterling, would it have anything to do with the Twilight Zone episode entitled "Steel?" Or does The Necromancer come into play here?

Good point on Caress of Steel brother glortiz. But I think it is what it is! Heavy Metal has always been referred to as steel. The album represents a beefier rock style than Fly by Night but not as heavy as a Sabbath or Priest. So basically it's a bad ass rock album with just a caress of steel. Thats what I have always thought.

Kelly D - Really good point!

Lance - The next time you decide to sandwich my wife, it better be with Captain Harvey's steak subs! The Pride of Dundalk! And on the Heavy Metal comments. CoS was released in 1975. As I remember, the music press tried to label a lot of bands with the heavy metal label. All of them, including Sabbath rejected that idea. The only band that said, yes, we are, is Judas Priest and that probably did happen in '75. So, although your point is really good, I don't think it applies because of the time frame.

The reason I brought up Rod Steiger, The Necromancer and The Twilight Zone is twofold. First, they did dedicate the album to him. Second, if you read the lyrics to Necro, no music, just the lyrics, it really reads like a Twilight Zone episode.

Just my two cents...
#78 - Posted 12/31/08 @4:26PM by patrush

#69 - no problem.

I'm sure Rush (like many other bands) can't make up their minds when the time comes to pick an album title. They are probably juggling 10 (or more) different options, and settle on the final choice at the very last minute. Sort of like me in a good restaurant, I could stare at the menu for 20 minutes without being able to settle on what I want, then when the waiter comes, I pick a dish at random.

Jazzmen face the same dilemma when picking titles for their (mostly) instrumental tracks. It really ends up being a humorous exercise in the end, because how the heck are they supposed to pick a title for an instrumental track (which by definition doesn't have lyrics and anything to reference to).
#79 - Posted 12/31/08 @4:36PM by musicofthespheres [contact]

i gotta get out of the house zitro! :)

but that's pretty cool, gloritz. If you really think the COS album title may be related to Necromancer "Caressing" the "Steel" Twilight Zone episode, you might want to share the idea w. Power Windows for inclusion in their Twilight Zone entry under Insprations.

The steel guitar and the heavy metal angles may be in the album title's meaning, but if you've uncovered another layer of reference to COS... there ya go patrush...
#83 - Posted 12/31/08 @5:29PM by Pat [contact]

Lance--I think I'll avoid the whole colon discussion this time around!

BTW, I love how at the bottom of the Wikipedia entry on COS, it lists Singles with their "Chart positions". Whuh? "Return of the Prince" charted? Maybe not, at least according to Wikipedia.

Also, this gets me wondering: Wikipedia says that the remastered COS CD has the lyrics in it. Is that true? And if so, does the remastered FBN have lyrics? I have an old (Canadian?) album with lyrics on the sleeve (written out/copied from Neil's originals). I always thought the original CD releases were a bit cheap. I mean, Neil isn't even pictured in the MP CD booklet...
#84 - Posted 12/31/08 @5:45PM by State of Grace [contact]

#85 - Posted 12/31/08 @6:07PM by Lamb Saag [contact]

re #83

Pat, it's time to treat yourself to "The Rush Remasters" series!

I also thought the old PolyGram CDs were cheap and a little tacky, too. But when they were all re-released, they made the packaging true to the original albums.

2112, Signals, FBN, all look like the mini albums (Hemispheres even came with the mini poster inside!). And, yes, Neil's photo was returned to the MP booklet.
#86 - Posted 12/31/08 @6:24PM by LanceTheShred [contact]

glortiz! I second the sphere mans comment on your observations regarding COS. That's pretty astounding. AS for your wife and Capt Harveys, that's really all I'll be thinking about the next time I'm cruzin Holabird Ave.....Hold the fried onions mister

#87 - Posted 12/31/08 @6:42PM by patrush

#82 - sorry I don't buy into this Twilight Zone stuff. You should ask Neil! I really don't think the title means much, if anything. Just like Power Windows, what does that mean anyways? Or Moving Pictures?

I remember (back in the early 1990s) reading a web page where some dude on LSD wrote a bunch of nonsense (probably made a lot of sense to him though) about Rush and the meaning of various lyrics. The guy (loser, I'm sure) had entire pages of essay online. I'm not sure it still exists, but it was striking at the time.

Then I heard various interviews with Neil Peart where he would comment on the meaning of a song; and remembering what this LSD dude wrote as his interpretation, Neil's version was totally different, and many times, he downplayed the meaning or discouraged interpretation by fans of the song's lyrics. (Probably because there wasn't very important meanings attached to them in the first place, when he composed them.)

Anyhow, I might sound like I know Peart personally, which I don't. This is just my (very subjective) opinion.
#88 - Posted 12/31/08 @6:53PM by Neil_Rulz [contact]

Hmm, to add my spice in stirring the rumor pot - Donna Halper did talk about that "big surprise" thingy a while back. Maybe related to this?

And now for the "truth": Ged wants to add to his wine cellar fron Chile, Argentina, etc. and by touring will be able to write it off as a business expense.

And "Canadians' elevated price tag" - Is that some financial statement on the conversion from Canada to South American money?

Does it apply to all Canadians and/or things Canadian?

Or is it just that 3 certain Canadians are worth more? :-)
#89 - Posted 12/31/08 @7:16PM by glortiz [contact]

patrush, your point is taken and a very good one. In no way, shape or form did I intend to come off like I know the meaning behind the title of CoS. But hey, with an objective mind, you can see relationships, no matter how unintended. And now that I think about it, didn't they do a song called The Twilight Zone on 2112? Hmm.... Just having fun with this.

c) Would butcher the phrase, even on a keyboard, and end up offending someone.

d) Be too busy listening to 2112, taking "sneak-a-toke" hits in the bar bathroom, and leafing through the Yellow Pages to find a "Tipsy Taxi".

e) All of the above.

#94 - Posted 12/31/08 @8:55PM by musicofthespheres [contact]

and an excellent COS reference in 92b)!

looks pretty wild, 91...I think I'll pass.

I was going to ask about Moving Pictures as a title... I have my own idea, but will leave it at that. Like gloritz said, with an objective mind you can see relationships - and I'd bet most of them are intended. No doubt some are just for fun and not with deep intentions, but to see the relationships helps me understand the art and the band better.

there doesn't have to be great meaning in album titles either, but i do think they are carefully chosen and can have multiple references. Look at Neil's description of "Counerparts" in that tourbook, as an example. And they've discussed the Power Windows title in interviews - all the songs look at the power of things (money, dreams, the stars, emotions etc.).

And as for Neil discouraging interpration. he may discourage off-the-wall interpretations of songs, because he tends to write pretty directly. But he also only has so many words to work with in lyrics, and therefore often provides clues, hints, and guidelines in the album bio/tourbook. hardly discouraging our thinking about the lyrics.

Anyway, thanks for the COS insights. happy new year!

I am sold! The story was essentially man against the machine. Sound familiar? The Starman just hadn't taken shape yet in Neil's brain!

The other connections (steel guitar, a more polished version of metal) may still work, but the Twilight Zone connection in the album title looks pretty legit to me.

Ok, does anybody else think that this means good things for an early tour in the US?

I'm REALLY hoping for that... I'm not going to be able to see any shows during the summer of 2011... I don't think pleabs get off for concerts.
#102 - Posted 1/1/09 @2:42AM by Dino [contact]

Halper's surprise for 'you guys' would not be a tour to South America now would it? Does no one remember any other possibilities? How about a box set? That was mentioned by Alex and reported here I believe. Long time RIAB readers would remember this. AS for 'packing their bags' only to go to S.A. ..... well that's what they did last time. In fact, they could have ended the Vapor Trails tour in N.H. It was obviously worth 'packing up their bags' for 3 shows. This is all well documented. Why would it not be worth it now? :P
#103 - Posted 1/1/09 @2:56AM by glortiz [contact]

Dino, are you giving up on the boys?

#104 - Posted 1/1/09 @3:02AM by Dino [contact]

Giving up? I re-read my text, and don't think I indicated anything along those lines. Although admittedly, I don't know what that means. Giving up on them how? In that they will tour? Well....allegedly, they may do that only once more.....allegedly. That they will not record and release? Hardly. They've (again allegedly) stated that recording will continue even if touring ceases. And I will continue to support them, as I have since 77.
#105 - Posted 1/1/09 @12:07PM by LanceTheShred [contact]

Dino man! It does get a little frustrating trying to put the pieces to the Rush puzzle together for the future. Who knows?? Their decisions are based on how the ENTIRE band feels about what to do next. I don't think that Donna's surprise was a SA tour though. I really think it will be the VT re-mix but...............who knows. I guess that is why she is such a great friend to the boys because of trust. She herself won't let the cat outta the bag until the time is appropriate.

Either way we have a brand new year ahead of us full of speculation and hopefully some delicious unopened pellets for us to devour................

Happy New Year to all. I hope you're all safe and sound, enjoying a deserved day off (thanks to those whose professions never take a rest, who have to work today). It's fun to speculate, but I don't want to put too much energy into worrying whether they'll tour South America or remaster Vapor Trails until it's announced officially or until it happens. But I may take Lamb's advice and get me some older remasters. I'll have to find an uninitiated friend to give my first-edition CDs to. That's something to look forward to for me.

Howdy there world and a happy new year to everyone.

Now. I have a problem with the S&A dvd. I got my Blue Ray copy on the day of release but I've only watched it through twice, the second time being this morning in the early hours, when it dawned on me why I've only watched it twice - the sound/picture synchronization is way out in quite a number of places. it is particularly noticeable at one point during the drum solo when the movement of Neil's feet are way behind the sound.

Has anyone else noticed this? is there a difference between the Blue Ray and the normal dvd? or have I got a duff copy?

Liver.

@ 102 Dino - Agree completely that this is not Halper's "surprise" and it's not something that would be of any value to most of us and it's certainly not a "project" that was "taking up all their time" last month.

Regarding your other point though, there's a big difference between those '02 South American dates and a 1-off South American tour now. In that case, Rush had already been on the road and the tour machine was already in motion. There are a lot of "fixed costs" for Rush to play even a single show. After a year off these guys would rehearse for 4 weeks at least. Plus you have getting the equipment out of storage and paying the crew members (enough to justify not working on other projects). Not to mention the setlist and production of the show itself. To do all of this, put in that type of time and expense, and just play like 7 shows and then shut it down again really makes no sense...

Hey Liver--

sounds like you have just discovered the FATAL FLAW of digital television: the lip-sync problem.

I did some research on this and it appears that ALL plasma or LCD Televisions will exhibit the following problem: because HD digital video signals are so complex, it takes more time for a receiver to process them. Audio signals, on the other hand, take less time. The end result is that when you are watching a show, you hear the sound BEFORE the corresponding picture, which is very annoying, even if you don't notice it consciously.

I hate to even mention this for anyone out there who may not have noticed, but in fact, this affects every HD television, and it doesn't matter if you use DVD or Blu Ray. I first noticed this effect on RIR, particularly on close-ups of the boys playing their instruments. I really started to annoy me cos Neil would hit his snare, but I would hear it a split second before I saw it. It's like being in the nosebleed section at a concert, but in reverse -- you near the sound a split second after you see something.

Fortunately there is a solution: some receivers have built in delay switches which allow you to delay the sound to match the picture.

Not many receivers have this feature, but you can purchase a separate audio delayer, which allows you to control the sound so you can sync it with the visual. There are a couple on the market, but the most effective seems to be the Felston 740. I bought one myself, but unfortunately, it doesn't work yet, because I only have a Stereo (analog not digital) Receiver, and the Felston only works with a digital receiver with HDMI inputs. (I bought an Analog to Digital converter, but it doesn't seem to work either.

Hope this helps.

It sure helped me to express this all here, cos I have been really frustrated by it myself.

Heading a production to South America IS a lucrative venture. Bands like Maiden & Kiss and others have been party to this. These venues hold typically a minimum of 3x what a North American arena holds. Ergo 7 shows = approx. 21, maybe upto 28 venues revenue wise. If anyone can remember some of the early (70s and 80s) interviews, Geddy said hauling gear to Europe was lucrative. And if you check tour dates, you'll see these were less than 30 shows per leg. That being said, there are ALWAYS problems with the promoters in these venues. As for getting in game shape, I think the boys have proven their ability in something as ramshackle as The Sars festival was. Granted, that was no 3 hour set, but I think their ability to put together a semblance of a decent show on short notice is well within their capapbilities. No, I think if the rumor is true, the boys have done their math. Whether such a tour (if founded true) were to expand, would be welome by all. How they could convince Neil to this........I'll never guess.

Gourdy - great setlist. I have a few comments and questions to ask you about the setlist.

Why is "Losing it" missing? Don't you like the song? The violin solo is really amazing, and it's one of Rush's few songs that climaxes so well.

Vapor Trails is an awesome song, so this one has to stay. I love the subtle guitar lines during the verses ("Silence all the songbirds / stilled by the killing frost / forests burn to ashes / everything is lost"). The song gives me chills. Judging from the lyrics, it is probably Peart writing about his family.

I love Ceiling Unlimited, VT and CU really caught my attention when the album got released. However, this means 2 songs from VT in the setlist, and 1 slot is lost to some oldies they never played before. For instance, I can think of several older songs that would deserve to be played (Middletown dreams, emotion detector, grand designs, kid gloves). My comment is really hard to make because I really like CU, especially the hard rocking power chords in the middle of the song.

Same could be said for Half the world. That makes 2 from Counterparts, at the expense of some oldies.

I'm surprised hardly anyone here seems to want to hear Cinderella Man played live. This song would rock so much if Rush were to play it in this day and age of musical maturity (they would probably slightly alter it to make it sound better).

Farewell to Kings is such an excellent album. Cygnus X-1 Book I is such an awesome tune. I would love to hear the whole song live.

Same for Hemispheres (Book II). This was a great pick.

#87 - Say what you will, but I will continue to live in a fairyland where the album titles mean something.

Power Windows:

All songs written about the theme of power. The term "power window", aside from it's usual meaning as a way to not have to crank your car windows up and down, is a psychological concept from the busines world. Two people walk into a conference room and the one with more power will sit with his back to the window, creating an intimidating sillouette. Then the album cover and artwork: televisions (hit the power button and get a window to the world), a remote control that opens the glass pane window to the room, binoculars (usually measured in power, like 7x50, which stands for a 7 power magnification with a 50mm objective diameter), and so on.

Moving Pictures:

The *CAMERA* Eye, with its scenes of New York and London. Red Barchetta, which could easily be a little movie. YYZ, which tries to paint a sonic picture of travel. Witch Hunt, another cinematically ripe tune. "Living in a fish-eye lens, caught in the camera eye" Once again, the cover and accompanying artwork, with the triple-entendre of the guys moving some pictures, the old woman weeping at the pictures, and the the great director T.C. Broonsie wrapping up the film shoot on the back cover. The photos of the guys in time lapse giving a sense of motion or ... drumroll, please ... of MOVING PICTURES. Their entire theme was to write songs like a camera, objectively (a la Ayn Rand's objectivist philosophy), and cinematically (which gets them moving -- there's that word again -- away from philosophical stuff like Freewill and continues the trend of painting musical pictures that started modestly with Jacob's Ladder).

It's all there. And drenched in it. They've pretty much said this stuff in interviews.

You really want to maintain that there's nothing in their album titles?

P.S. Or maybe I'm just on too much LSD. ;)
#118 - Posted 1/1/09 @10:44PM by Gourdy Lee [contact]

Actually, Half the World is on Test For Echo, Cygnus would just be way too hard for Geddy to sing, I like Losing it, but the violin makes it the "production piece" of the album that they put in and just go nuts without having to worry about the constraints of live performance.
#119 - Posted 1/1/09 @11:36PM by patrush

#117 - hmmmm, I find this rather unconvincing. "Moving Pictures" title could probably apply to the Power Windows album equally well, if I apply the same reasoning (or to Caress of Steel). Any song will paint a "picture" of something, if it has lyrics. If it is an instrumental, and invokes an image, then you are probably on LSD ;-)
YYZ only paints a picture of travel in your mind because you know it refers to the Pearson Airport. Otherwise, the song hardly has anything to do with travel (unless a "LSD trip" is considered travelling).
#120 - Posted 1/1/09 @11:58PM by How f---ing cool is Geddy Lee. [contact]

#119 - OK, then explain this:

"It is pretty abstract...I love the scene of this sort of Billy Bibbit-like character confused as to his reality. The windows that he's looking out are in a sense very powerful windows. This is an album of power. We are talking about different types of power and the way they affect us, and the way they affect him. The boy is a little shaken as to which way he should look and which window is his reality." - Geddy Lee, "Rockline", Nov 18, 1985

And even better:

"We looked at all those songs as little films, I think. We loved the play on words about moving pictures, and the fact that we were taking cinematic approach to writing that kind of rock music... At the same time we were trying to make these stories that we were telling affecting and having some kind of emotional impact and moving to the listener. So that was really the inspiration behind the title, and the title really suited what we were trying to accomplish on that record." - Geddy Lee, "Moving Pictures In the Studio", 1981

(both from link )

Thanks for playing. We have some nice parting gifts for you.

#120 - this doesn't prove anything. I never said there was no meaning to a title (except for instrumental songs, most of the time). Just that for us to guess the meaning of a title is nothing more than a game, and we are probably dead wrong at this guessing game, most of the time. If Geddy or Neil tells you the meaning, then so be it. I was referring to us guessing. I'm not saying we shouldn't be guessing and having fun, I'm just saying that we are probably way off target. What if Neil next week tells us that the choice of title COS was a reference to his motor engine gasket? Your above reasoning about Moving Pictures, YYZ being a picture of travel has not been substantiated by the band members (to my knowledge).

hfcgl,

thanks for that link - there's so much at the power windows site, i sometimes forget where to look.

nice power windows (the song) insight too. huh, wonder why the website has the same name? :)

I think it's also interesting that MP has cropped up in lyrics of 2 songs, Available Light and Workin them Angels. In addition to Ged's comments and your thoughts, I've considered that perhaps "Moving Picture" is synonymous w. "song" to Neil. Songs are as much moving pictures as films, in a play on words sort of way. especially Rush songs of course...

And a picture's worth a 1000 words...even if Workin them Angels only has 165...

Just my interpretation...not meant to CONVINCE anyone...

#123 - Thanks, mots.

#121 - Your own words betray you:

"Just like Power Windows, what does that mean anyways? Or Moving Pictures?"

So do Neil's:

"The song is loosely based on airport-associated images. Exotic destinations, painful partings, happy landings, that sort of thing."

HFC - thanks for the articles, they are interesting reads, especially the essay the guy from NYU wrote.

Hey, since you seem to have a lot of NP information at your fingertips, do you know if NP is atheist, or if he is just against organized religion? (I remember Geddy Lee saying he was against organized religion - but I never heard NP say so, except when discussing Ayn Rand objectivism.)

We do get a sense of this (that he could be atheist) from the songs Faithless, Ghost of a Chance, Freewill, although he comes close to saying it, he never says so explicitly.

I suspect he may discuss this topic in his books. I only have Ghost Rider, and could only read the first few chapters, then I got too busy with other stuff to read the rest.

Hey, Pat, I sympathize with your workload. Keep on plowing through.

Off the top of my head, this is my sense of Neil on the whole religion thing. He has said that he is an agnostic, but as the lyrics to Mystic Rhythms imply, and his curiosity with fortune-telling via the Tarot cards, he remains open to 'something'.

I don't see him being necessarily against organized religion, but more against a strain of controlling, manipulative, fundamentalist religious practice -- organized or not. He seems to have a 'live and let live' attitude, the lyrics on S&A notwithstanding, as long as the effect of said religion does not bring about the opposite of what it claims to promise.

He also apparently sees something of value in the Bible, if nothing more than another literary source. If he were militantly atheistic, I doubt he could ever make the occasional biblical allusions he embeds in his lyrics, without them being meant in a mocking way (which he doesn't do, in my opinion).

I could possibly say more, but it's getting late. Maybe I'll chime in with more tomorrow, if I come up with anything more (maybe a little Googling to augment my recollections/impressions). That also assumes you were looking for more.

G'nite, Pat.

FRESLUCR: what the drunk cops in Superbad might yell to a perp on the run

P.S. I believe all three of them, and I specifically remember Geddy, have a bone to pick with God over the evil in the world. They are by no means unique, alone, or original in that sentiment. ... It would be interesting to see how the lyrics to the next album would turn out if Neil started reading, say, G.K. Chesterton (instead of Richard Dawkins).
#133 - Posted 1/3/09 @1:42AM by patrush

HFC - thanks for your comments. This makes a lot of sense. Not too far from the impression that I had. They DO make biblical references, and I can sense a lot of spirituality in their lyrics (i.e. you can tell they believe in something, but not the conventional elixir of the masses, as it is normally packaged).

I did notice that NP and Lifeson both referred to Richard Dawkins in recent interviews ("recent" here probably means past 5-10 years). I found Dawkins to be extremely bitter when I read his book (Delusion), it felt like he really had a big chip on the shoulder, more than any substantive arguments to offer, I kind of lost respect for him. At the very least, I can say, as a fellow scientist, I expected a much more scholarly work coming from him (which it wasn't!).

Good nite.

weird... last night I dreamed about this and I just came here to see it...

I'm not excited because of 2 reasons:

1) This is the Xth time I've seen this rumour, all the others being false alarms. I don't see why it would be real this time -- in fact, it was most likely to happen during the S&A tour in 2007 or 2008, not in late 2009, more than one year after the tour has ended and with no new album (at least not in plans yet) or anything to promote.

2) If it were true, it says "Brazil, Argentina and Chile" and I'm from Mexico, way too far from those places.

Damn, I hate the fact that Mexico is sometimes part of an South American leg of the tour, and sometimes it's part of the North American tours.

Anyways, it's an injustice to have Rush playing 50+ dates in the US per tour (in arenas or theaters with 5000+- seats) and not having one single date in Mexico (the whole country... where a single show in Mexico would have an attendance of easily 25000)... it's always been like that.

anyways, hope this time it's finally true for you sudamericanos and for us mexicanos!! ;)

happy new year to everyone :)
