Buddy Rich Memorial Concert recap
Posted at 2:00PM | comments (20)

UPDATE - 10/30@9:00PM: Michael of NeilPeartDrumsticks.com has posted over 100 images from the concert on his MySpace page. You can check them out here. Thanks to Asif K for the heads up.

Last Saturday the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert took place at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. Pre-show activities began around 6:15PM and the show itself got underway around 7:45PM. The entire event was streamed live on the Drum Channel. For the pre-show they had a camera set up with Drum Channel founder Don Lombardi and Stephen Perkins (of Jane's Addiction) sitting down with most of the show participants (not Neil though). They even took a few calls from viewers including RIAB's own windycitygirl (Jennie from Chicago!). The event included performances from Neil, Nick Rich with the Buddy Rich Band, John Blackwell, Terry Bozio, Chad Smith, Jeff Berlin, Will Lee, Tommy Igoe and a surprise appearance from Peter Erskine. The complete schedule was as follows:

Introduction with Cathy Rich

Tommy Igoe: Little Train, Preach And Teach, La Fiesta

John Blackwell: No Jive, Nutville, Mind Of Jay

Donnie Marple Solo performance

Terry Bozzio featuring Efrain Toro: Some Skunk Funk, Venture Brothers Medley w/Cowboy BeBop, Machine

Intermission (15 min)

Tommy Igoe featuring Will Lee: The Chicken, Willowcrest, La Fiesta

Peter Erskine: (last minute add)

Nick Rich: Beulah Witch; Mercy, Mercy, Mercy

Chad Smith: Dani California, Hocus Pocus, Birdland

Neil Peart: Love For Sale, Time Will Tell, Cottontail/One O'Clock Jump, YYZ

Despite a few minor glitches, the Drum Channel did a pretty good job of televising the event; not bad for their first try. The user was able to toggle between 5 different cameras although the backstage camera was malfunctioning most of the time.

Neil Peart's kit from the concert arrived at Dale's Drum Shop in Harrisburg, PA earlier this week. Reader Scott G got the following email from the Dale's email list:

It's here and set up fresh from the show - played heads and all!

Stop in and see it when you can.

We plan on having this great piece of drumming history on display for a long time. We want everybody to be able to check it out up-close, but eventually it's going to have to be packed up and stored for safekeeping.

Cymbals from the show were not an option for us so we're working with Sabian on getting some accurate replicas to keep this as historically correct as possible.

If you didn't make the show and can't get here before we pack it up you'll still be able to see and hear the kit on the next Buddy Rich Memorial Concert DVD.

Enjoy!

According to the Drum Channel, they will soon be making highlights from the show available online but presumably for subscribers only. They also promise that the entire event plus backstage, pre-show and rehearsal footage will be made available on DVD sometime next year. Several bootleg videos from the event appeared on YouTube earlier this week but were promptly taken down. However, I've collected several photos which you can check out in the slideshow below. Thanks to PhantomFears at Counterparts, rushfan4life at The Rush Forum, Cathy Rich and reader Asif K for the pics.

I was wondering if there are any recordings either visual or audio of the concert. I did hear the yyz bit but it would be nice to hear the others songs Neil played as well as the other drummers.
In addition did anyone record the Joe Bensen interview? I wouldn't want to infringe on any copyrights. It sure would be nice to hear the concert and interview since this thing called work is dampening my rush fix.

oh yeah. my phone call with terry bozzio was the highlight. i wish i had more time to think of a better question. but i had already hit 'deer in headlight' status. and then there he was on the other end of the phone, i was online via chicago to nyc. kinda trippy.

I would have liked to have seen either Nick Rich or Neil sit down for a brief chat.

but oh well.

humrush,

if it helps provide a fix, a previous version of Cotton Tail from the Burning for Buddy discs is available at itunes. I've got the B4B CDs - can loan to you next time, if you want. Dancing Men, played by Simon Phillips is my favorite frorm those discs.

I don't think the sound man not being able to get mics working, nore working them properly from the board is a minor glitch, especially if it is Rush's sound people as Kathy Rich confirmed for me via email. Still, it introduced me to John Blackwell and that was worth every cringe.

Here is an awesome vid of John. Look how he twirls his sticks ala Keith Moon at the 3:40 mark but does so with huge crashes. He is the only drummer besides Rich, Krupa and Peart that I have uttered the phrase "that is impossible" while watching.

Quick to judge,
Quick to anger,
Slow to understand

Ignorance and prejudice
And fear

I have seen at least one of the other clips of neil playing on youtube. I don't have the link handy but if you search with the names of the songs you will find them.

It was great to see/hear Jeff Berlin another great bassist. Interesting take on YYZ.

Humrush, I pretty much just watched live. That was my intention and I'm glad I had nothing else in mind. Imagine if you will: point-and-shoot cam angled at a plasma display with the fan thisclose to the bitty camera mic (since the site was in beta still, I had a camera ready). I turned it on for three partials because the delay between feeds was significant and I'm a television type that's just dealt with the whole technological sync sinkhole with digital routers.

Just looked at them. Awful files. Can't even time the lag between. *shudder* I hope you have better eventual luck.

And now the fun reason to post:

CHIPHUUU the snack between songs, extreme doritos perhaps.

Great pictures from the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert and after party! Thanks for posting the pics Ed and thanks to rushfan4life, Cathy Rich and Asif K for sharing their pics :)

It was a great night front row center in front of my computer with my son, so cool. I was so impressed with all the performers that night. John Blackwell... WOW, blew me away, so genuine. Donnie Marple was excellent, the sticks behind his back in the midst of playing was mind blowing (my son LOVED that!). Chad Smith was so much fun to watch, he did a great performance (liked Dani California a lot). I loved 'The Chicken' performed by Tommy Igoe, the bass playing in this song was great. Nick Rich was so awesome, I could see his Grandfather in him. Finally... Neil, always THE BEST!

Great night, great memories. I will be looking forward to purchasing the DVD.

We had a great time 4th row center, boom camera flying over my head all night, so close I could have grabbed it! All the artists were amazing! Chad Smith was great on Dani California, but really kicked it up a notch for Hocus Pocus! He was tossing sticks behind him throughout his set looked like 1 just missed the trumpet player. Met a nice couple from Toronto in line outside, and wonderful gentlemen from England in his seventies, who said he came over on the QE2 for the show, and how he used to follow Buddy around in the day.. Then his wife brought back the program with someones autograph, and he was like a sixteen y.o. @ a Jonas Bros. concert. John Blackwell sat about 5 rows behind us after his set with family members, and people were getting pictures taken with him between sets. He definitely can play too! We were awestruck watching him "hit things with sticks" :) Definitely cool to see Neil that close too(never get seats this close)saw Michael walking around a bit as well. Great times! Cant wait for the DVD!
