Rush to end Atlantic relationship with new greatest hits package; in negotiations with Rounder Records
Posted at 9:42AM | comments (86)

Rush has been with Atlantic Records since 1989's Presto and have released a total of 7 studio and 3 live albums under this label. But I'm now hearing that this relationship will finally come to a close with the release of a greatest hits record next year. This will be the first greatest hits package with Atlantic and will cover the band's 20-year history with the label. It will be titled Rush: 1989-2009 and will include some previously unreleased live Atlantic tracks in addition to several studio hits from the last 20 years. The band is currently in negotiations with Rounder Records to release all new music exclusively through their label although nothing has been finalized yet. Rounder is one of the biggest independent record labels in the United States. Some other artists they represent are Bruce Cockburn, George Thorogood and the Destroyers, Alison Krauss, They Might Be Giants, and The Tragically Hip. More details as I learn them.

Inevitable.
#2 - Posted 8/14/08 @9:53AM by Fiat

I see the wiki entry for Rounder already has Rush listed as an artist.
#3 - Posted 8/14/08 @9:59AM by subdivincent [contact]

happy 34th anniversary of Neil's first gig. rush is a band indeed.
#4 - Posted 8/14/08 @9:59AM by Kelly D [contact]

Aw shit. . . I was planning on their last album with Atlantic being a studio one. O_O
#5 - Posted 8/14/08 @10:20AM by superbad [contact]

Wow! The BIG label music business is really changing! It's for the better too... More freedom of creativity!! I'm happy to see this!

Supa!
#6 - Posted 8/14/08 @10:20AM by Wall05

I hope this all works out for the best.
#7 - Posted 8/14/08 @10:27AM by dinoman [contact]

Could be very good timing. With all of the attention Rush has been getting lately, a well put-together "greatest hits" might be just the thing to bring curious newcomers into the fold.

The somewhat more subtle, but more important news, is that thy are in negotiations with another label. This certainly indicates the intention of continuing to release new music.

I can't wait!
#8 - Posted 8/14/08 @10:39AM by Electric Brain Elderly [contact]

That package sounds awesome... but does that mean Rush is now an indie band? That means the only prog band signed to a major label is Asia of all...
#9 - Posted 8/14/08 @10:42AM by ghostcolon [contact]

Cool that it's indie, but sort of depressing at the same time. It's almost like getting demoted.
#10 - Posted 8/14/08 @10:56AM by Pat [contact]

Demoted? No way. This certainly means more money for Rush. It's not like Atlantic ever did any promotion of Rush, and certainly not in recent years. All Rush got out of the deal was distribution, and now that even a small/indie label can distribute just as well (and lots of sales come online), Rush doesn't need to be giving away part of their profits to Atlantic. Good riddance.
#11 - Posted 8/14/08 @10:57AM by dinoman [contact]

Fiat (#2) - I noticed that too. However, They are not (yet) listed on the Rounder website, either in "News" or under artists.

Rush as an indie band....somehow seems both fitting and inappropriate at the same time.
#12 - Posted 8/14/08 @10:59AM by lilvictory [contact]

Exactly what I was thinking Dinoman - you don't enter into negotiations with a new label unless your intention is continued new music and most likely multiple releases. More evidence that the inevitable "end of the road" is somewhere in the far off distant future. Just what I wanted to hear!

Rush: 1989-2009? Wow catchy title! Combining greatest hits with the "previously unreleased live Atlantic tracks" is a nice way to appeal to both the newbie and veteran fan. Very sneaky! But if it keeps our Boys continuing down their creative paths so be it...

Very good news!!
#13 - Posted 8/14/08 @11:01AM by zzy [contact]

Pat is right. This is Rush firing Atlantic. The conversation went like this:

Rush: So, Atlantic, what can you do to help us out?

Atlantic: Um, we can do some marketing, but frankly everyone who cares already knows who you are. So mostly we just plan to put our logo on your CD.

Rush: Cool, thanks. And what fraction of our sales are you going to take for helping us out in that way?

Atlantic: I was hoping for 20%? Oh, and since nobody buys CDs anymore, you'll have to give us a cut of your concert grosses, too.

Rush: OK, thanks. we'll be in touch.
#14 - Posted 8/14/08 @11:01AM by dinoman [contact]

Ah, yo make a good point Pat. I had not considered this! Perhaps they will FINALLY get promoted properly.

I think we may be in the midst of a new era in Rushdom.
A sense a paradigm shift.

Rejoice.
#15 - Posted 8/14/08 @11:04AM by dinoman [contact]

Damn my poor proofreading.
Let me reiterate...

YOU make a good point, Pat.

and...

I sense a paradigm shift.
#16 - Posted 8/14/08 @11:20AM by RobJ_ [contact]

Rush started out as an indie band, why shouldn't they finish up that way? I think it's absolutely fantastic.
#17 - Posted 8/14/08 @11:20AM by Pat [contact]

I'm not sure Rounder will do more promotion than Atlantic, but they might. In any case, I'm betting that they gave Rush a more-Rush-favorable deal. They must have. Rounder, I sense (without any real research) still cares about music over money, which makes them a good fit for Rush, which has always seemed to feel the same way. It seems like they practice the equivalent of "sustainable growth": they're not killing the goose that lays the golden eggs, etc.
#18 - Posted 8/14/08 @11:24AM by RobJ_ [contact]

Rounder does not care for music over money. They are a business. Money is all they care about. Just because they aren't as large as a major doesn't mean they have any other interests at heart.
#19 - Posted 8/14/08 @11:34AM by Fiat

Does anybody recall hearing one of them saying that they did record video for the Test For Echo shows? There has to be a TFE show DVD in the vault somewhere. That Closer to the Heart video montage deal looks like a full on live performance shoot.
#20 - Posted 8/14/08 @11:43AM by ShrimpCot_1 [contact]

To be honest, the band has had dealings with Rounder since the release of Rush in Rio, since Atlantic had no interest in releasing that on their label. And look what happened, over 1 million unites sold. Same with R30, Atlantic didn't want it, and the same thing happened again. And its better this way, Anthem can distribute through Rounder. Less hassle for them to deal with Warner, which has dumped numerous artists over the last few years.
#21 - Posted 8/14/08 @11:43AM by Grace Under Pressure [contact]

Hmm, "previously unreleased live Atlantic tracks" eh? Sounds darn right god to me!

And, Fiat, I believe they did say that T4E footage was kept away in the vault. Who knows if it will ever see the light of day, though (besides CTTH).
#22 - Posted 8/14/08 @11:49AM by Zitro

Actually, when it comes right down to it, the label doesn't matter to me I just want new releases! I buy CD's, does that make me old-fashioned?

BIPHOCET sounds like it might work well for pain
#23 - Posted 8/14/08 @11:49AM by RobJ_ [contact]

Word on the street at the time was the video footage that was supposed to become the Different Stages DVD came out terrible and the band were too embarrassed to release it.

Having said that, I also recall hearing Geddy say that it was something he hoped would some day be released, along with the missing songs from R30.

My guess is the R30 songs would be what ended up on the Atlantic compilation. Just a guess though, and sorry I don't have references for my two above comments. It's been a long time.
#24 - Posted 8/14/08 @11:49AM by Bravest Face [contact]

Very interesting because last night I was actually thinking that it would be cool for the guys to release a "Greatest Hits" of their latter work. I was thinking more RTB on though, everything post-Chronicles, however, with the split with Atlantic, including Presto material would obviously make more sense, especially since Chronicles only featured "Show, Don't Tell."

It will certainly be cool to see the track list for this one!
#25 - Posted 8/14/08 @12:17PM by ENTREWHO [contact]

PEOPLE, I'M FROM NEW ORLEANS AND THIS IS GREAT NEWS--I PERSONALLY KNOW OF ABOUT 12-15 ARTISTS LIVING IN NEW ORLEANS WHO ARE ON ROUNDER'S LINEUP. INCLUDED ARE BUCKWHEAT ZYDECO, BLUES LEGEND CLARENCE 'GATEMOUTH' BROWN, GRAMMY AWARD WINNER AMANDA SHAW, AND GRAMMY AWARD WINNER AND SOUL LEGEND IRMA THOMAS. A COOL LITTLE NOTE--MS THOMAS IS A PERSONAL FRIEND OF MY FAMILY'S. MY DAD WAS ON THE TALENT COMMITTEE FOR HIS HIGH SCHOOL PROM IN 1962. HE SELECTED IRMA THOMAS. IT WAS HER FIRST WHITE GIG AND HELPED GET HER SOME MAINSTREAM EXPOSURE IN A VERY DIFFERENT RACIAL CLIMATE THAN WE LIVE IN NOW. I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT TIME I SEE HER SO I CAN TELL HER MY HEROES ARE NOW ON THE SAME LABEL AS HER. ALSO, ROUNDER MAY BE A BETTER FIT FOR THE FIRST RUSH GRAMMY AS RUSH WILL NOT FALL THROUGH THE CRACKS AS THEY DID WITH ATLANTIC. THINK ABOUT IT.

THANKS, PETER

I think this is great news. A new one to pop into the car. I'm not in car ipod world yet. . .
#27 - Posted 8/14/08 @12:34PM by Lerxster [contact]

Rounder eh? Well good for Rush and good for us. I guess that'll make Rush Rounder's biggest artist :) So long Atlantic, home (and former home) to some of my favorite bands. But it's not the same Atlantic it use to be.. the times they keep on changin. Glad to hear there will be an 89-09 greatest hits too. There is much to be happy about and look forward to.
#28 - Posted 8/14/08 @12:51PM by dreww76 [contact]

Well rounder already puts out Neil Peart's - Anatomy Of A Drum Solo DVD. Rounder is currently having great success with the Robert Plant Alison krause cd and I see that cd literally everywhere cd's are sold. So I think the are making a positive step. But hopefully it's not a blugrass cd New music- concept album; cygnus part 3 anyone...
#29 - Posted 8/14/08 @1:02PM by The Clansman 2112 [contact]

Maybe with this "Greatest Hits" package they will include a bonus DVD of all of the Videos that Rush did during their Atlantic days.
#30 - Posted 8/14/08 @1:03PM by Tricked by Circumstances [contact]

#11 Dinoman...Rush IS listed on Rounder's official site under artists. Rounder was in on both R30 and Rush in Rio DVD sets...This is going to be gooooood!!!

#31 - Posted 8/14/08 @1:47PM by frylock2112

There were rumblings of this happening after S&A Live was released. I manage a music store and the rep said that Rush were probably leaving to do their own thing at the end of the year. This is a good thing as Atantic Records hasn't been all too stable and when Ahmet died things really have wandered away from rock music and more into pop/rap.
#32 - Posted 8/14/08 @2:01PM by Doug

Odd that Rush would be let go so easily after S&A charting so high and Far Cry doing well on rock radio. In this day and age though who knows? Rounder is a label that is multi-purpose with dvd, books, cd's, and other means to help artists. I think Rush is at a stage right now in their career where they don't want the pressure maybe of a major label breathing down their necks.

The question is funding. I know Atlantic flips a big bill on their studio time and making of a record. One has to wonder if Rounder can afford that kind of recording artist just yet. Also, do they even offer the digital outlets that Atlantic does?

I bet the negotiations are about those very things. As far as the greatest hits cd, well we all probably saw the writing on the wall with regards to that coming out one day. The timing could be perfect for it. Release the DVD in November and ride the popularity of it with a release in February or March of a GH record to tide things over and make as much as they can off the name while the brand is still warm for them.

My guess at a tracklisting would be:

1. Show Don't Tell
2. The Pass
3. Superconductor
4. Dreamline
5. Bravado
6. Roll The Bones
7. Ghost of a Chance
8. Stick It Out
9. Nobody's Hero
10. Cold Fire
11. Test For Echo
12. Driven
13. Resist
14. One Little Victory
15. Earthshine
16. Secret Touch
17. Far Cry
18. Larger Bowl
19. Working Them Angels
20. Scars (live)
21. War Paint (live)
22. Ghost of a Chance (live S&A Tour)
23. Virtuality (live)
24. Half The World (live)
25. Ceiling Unlimited (live)
#33 - Posted 8/14/08 @2:03PM by Doug

Ooops added Ghost of a Chance twice there. I think Animate would be added instead of studio Ghost.
#34 - Posted 8/14/08 @2:04PM by Will Collier [contact]

A few things here.

If Rush had "gone indie" 20 years ago, that would indeed have been a demotion. Today, it's smart business.

A big record company is (or rather, was) good for three things: advancing you money to record (which Rush doesn't need any more), distribution to record stores (which doesn't matter any more), and promotion (which neither Atlantic nor Polygram ever did for Rush anyway). In return, they own your master tapes and take most of the sales money. That used to be the price you had to pay to reach a big audience. It's not the case any more.

Rush is established, with a hard-core six-digit fanbase that's going to buy anything they put out. Cutting out the dead weight of Atlantic is going to make The Boys a whole lot more money on any future releases.

Oh, somebody mentioned the Toronto T4E video... you can see the drum solo section on Neil's last DVD set. Based on the picture quality there, I can see why they didn't release the rest.
#35 - Posted 8/14/08 @2:07PM by Doug

That was not from the T4E tour. That was from a bootleg video from the Palace in Michigan from the CP tour. The T4E video was not released because there were audio and tracking issues which would have cost the band $100,000 at the time to correct and then you had costs of producing and editing the thing.

Today they can do it for a lot less because technology has come a long way since 1996 and it was pro-shot. Fogo will get it done and it will be out one day.
#36 - Posted 8/14/08 @2:14PM by Will Collier [contact]

That was not from the T4E tour. That was from a bootleg video from the Palace in Michigan from the CP tour.

You're right. The house feed the old "Critical Mass" boot was made from. That'll teach me to go look stuff up first...
#37 - Posted 8/14/08 @2:54PM by dinoman [contact]

If we're truly talking a greatest HITS album, shouldn't it be an EP?

But seriously, here's what I would LIKE to see (in an order that I kinda like as well)...

1. Ceiling Unlimited
2. Scars
3. Malignant Narcissism
4. Limbo
5. Armor and Sword
6. Anagram
7. The Big Wheel
8. Hand Over Fist
9. Driven
10. Earthshine
11. Half the World
12. Secret Touch
13. We Hold On
14. Available Light
15. Chain Lightning
16. Bravado
17. Nobody's Hero
18. Resist
19. Ghost Rider
20. Ghost of a Chance
21. Cut to the Chase
22. Double Agent
23. Animate
24. Workin' them Angels

I haven't given thought to the bonus live tracks.
#38 - Posted 8/14/08 @3:59PM by maestro [contact]

An interesting development to be sure. I remember when Rush (Ray Daniels(?)) went with Atlantic after years and years with Mercury. I recall having thought: 'Hmmm. Contract's up. But why Atlantic? Why not re-sign with Mercury?'

Well, I wasn't the manager then, nor am I now; and, quite frankly, it's none of my business.

How do I feel about Rush moving over to an Indie label?
Ambivalent; I just don't know EXACTLY what this means for the band. Both good and bad, I suppose. It depends on the terms of the contract, I'm inclined to think.

Whatever the case may be, whatever the future may hold, we can all take solice in the fact there's new Rush on the horizon (but we kinda sorta already knew that anyway, huh?); and, it's comforting to know changes aren't permanent, but...

;)

The T4E footage was indeed shot then scrapped- mainly due to unforeseen technical issues if I recall correctly. Something about audio/vid synch issues?

And as someone mentioned, there are snips of that footage in the CTTH video from Different Stages.

As for Rounder -- fine with me. I don't care if Geddy burns CDs in his basement and Big Al prints lables from his Mac.
#40 - Posted 8/14/08 @4:10PM by exit...stage left [contact]

I don't get it. Why would anyone buy a greatest hits album???? Why would anyone buy a cd anymore. They take up so much space and they get scratched over time. I can make my own greatest hits playlist on my ipod. Musicians should just stop dealing with the record companies all together. Just hire a producer, lay down the tracks, post them on band website to sell. The internet can promote a band way better than those stupid record labels. Am I missing something here??? Times are a changing (again). MP3s and the like are where it's at...not cds. I won't buy this unless they include unreleased videos.
#41 - Posted 8/14/08 @4:17PM by eddievanlerxst2112 [contact]

rounder put out rush in rio and r30 as well as neil's book roadshow
#42 - Posted 8/14/08 @4:31PM by glortiz [contact]

Rounder also put out Carrie Nuttall's Rhythm & Light. So the loop is closed as I see it, good choice. Less commitment, more freedom as artists means a better product for all of us. Now I hope for the best.

exit...stage left, I will definitly buy this album (pardon me, CD). The IPod has it's uses and is a great device. But there is nothing like the anticipation surrounding a new release, even if it is a greatest hits record, going to the store to hold it in your hands and examine the cover art, the track listing. Then taking it home just to listen to it as you read all the liner notes. Things like this is becoming a lost art, but not with me.

I did just that with All The World's a Stage, my first Rush Album. And I have done it to every one since then!

Open the Vault!
#43 - Posted 8/14/08 @4:32PM by Zitro

#40 ESL, some of us have neither the time, werewithal, nor technical savvy to put together much more than an entry into this blog (well, I don't, anyway).

Let us stragglers straggle, if you please.....
#44 - Posted 8/14/08 @5:11PM by Praetorian [contact]

Play every song in a row from Rush to S and A Live!
That's Rush's greatest hits!!!
#45 - Posted 8/14/08 @5:15PM by dinoman [contact]

#30, Tricked, I stand corrected. I apparently missed it when I checked.
#46 - Posted 8/14/08 @5:17PM by dinoman [contact]

#44, good point Praet, but can I skip "Neurotica" and "Dog Years"? :)
#47 - Posted 8/14/08 @5:26PM by Fish Eyelands [contact]

Agreed #29, a companion DVD of videos from Show Don't Tell(both versions) - Far Cry is long overdue. Including the Closer To The Heart(live) video from Toronto '97
#48 - Posted 8/14/08 @5:42PM by eddievanlerxst2112 [contact]

I think it will be a double album with a bonus live CD. The tracklisting would be something like this:
------Disc 1------
1. Show Don't Tell
2. The Pass
3. Superconductor
4. Dreamline
5. Roll The Bones
6. Bravado
7. Ghost Of A Chance
8. Animate
9. Stick It Out
10. Leave That Thing Alone!
11. Nobody's Hero
------Disc 2------
1. Test For Echo
2. Driven
3. Half The World
4. Resist
5. One Little Victory
6. Ghost Rider
7. Secret Touch
8. Earthshine
9. Summertime Blues
10. Far Cry
11. Workin' Them Angels
12. The Larger Bowl
13. Malignant Narcissism
The bonus CD is trickier to come up with but I am taking a stab at it:
------Disc 3------
1. Scars (Live)
2. War Paint (Live)
3. Where's My Thing? (Live)
4. Cold Fire (Live)
5. Double Agent (Live)
6. Limbo (Live)
7. Virtuality (Live)
8. Time And Motion (Live)
9. Ceiling Unlimited (Live)
So the bonus disc would be a collection of unreleased live versions of songs released in the Atlantic Era.
#49 - Posted 8/14/08 @5:55PM by eddievanlerxst2112 [contact]

#46
I agree, except Neurotica is good up to the chorus, which kills it, but Dog Years is the flaming bag of s#!t on the porch that is Rush's entire catalog.

#47
BOTH versions?
#50 - Posted 8/14/08 @6:05PM by eddievanlerxst2112 [contact]

Maybe by signing with an Indie label they can make an album, tour in support of the album and put the excess money they earn by being on an Indie label towards cleanup jobs on some of the videos they have in the vault.
#51 - Posted 8/14/08 @6:10PM by dinoman [contact]

#49, good point. Come to think of it, I should've included Virtuality. Also good, until the chorus.
#52 - Posted 8/14/08 @6:15PM by dinoman [contact]

You know, I was just revisitng Neurotica, and it actually is a good song. But then comes that (excuse me, and please don't rip me a new one) GOD-AWFUL chorus. I hat to say it, but it ruins what otherwise would be a powerful and masterful song. That ending part; "hide in your shell, let the world go to hell...etc." and especially "the world is a stage for impotent rage, but don't let it get to you" is powerful for what it says as well as Geddy's voice.

Perhaps there's some way I can edit out the chorus.
#53 - Posted 8/14/08 @6:32PM by eddievanlerxst2112 [contact]

#51
Actually, Virtuality is a good song until the lyrics start(actually, just listen to the music don't listen to the lyrics. They sound like your dad talking about the internet. trying to sound cool but ultimately phailing.)
#54 - Posted 8/14/08 @6:34PM by Sean [contact]

Good move on their part. They sell about 250,000 cd's on average with a new release over the last 6 or 7 years which to be brutally honest is just about worth being on an Indie label. What Rush needs to do is get with the game of offering platinum packages with their tickets so the brokers don't get them all and offer meet and greet's as part of it as well.

They are more of a live act anyway as the studio cd's just are not selling like they used to. Do videos for them and go viral. Screw Atlantic. They haven't promoted anything worthwhile since Counterparts.
#55 - Posted 8/14/08 @6:35PM by Sean [contact]

Virtuality is a great song music wise. Lyric wise? Not so much. One of Lifeson's heaviest riffs ever.
#56 - Posted 8/14/08 @6:38PM by eddievanlerxst2112 [contact]

The important thing to remember though, is that even the worst rush songs are way better than what most other bands put out
#57 - Posted 8/14/08 @7:09PM by Tom [contact]

sounds cool to me.

as for greatest hits 89-08 - i would do:
show don't tell
the pass
available light
dreamline
bravado
roll the bones
ghost of a chance
animate (they must put this on!)
stick it out
cut to the chase
nobody's hero
alien shore
one little victory
how it is
earthshine
freeze (they must put this on!)
nocturne
far cry (they must put this on!)
malignant narcissisum (ditto)
the way the wind blows (ditto)
the main monkey business (ditto)
faithless (ditto)

pretty strong collection i think!
#58 - Posted 8/14/08 @7:23PM by PetieLee [contact]

Wouldn't it be cool if Rush did a small mini-tour, say 10 cities (even 5 cities!) to "celebrate" this greatest hits release? OMG I could like get tickets right in front of Geddy again! *sigh* I LOVE this idea...I wonder if they would...???

I am excited about a move to an idie label. Yes, more Rush on the horizon!

Love da Geddy! Miss da Geddy! Anticipating more Rush! Yay!
#59 - Posted 8/14/08 @7:48PM by Zitro

Thanks, PetieLee, for making me smile

As far as a track list goes, in my dream world it would read chronologically AND completely encompass the entire anthology of those years
#60 - Posted 8/14/08 @8:25PM by Electric Brain Elderly [contact]

Some of you guys are dreaming, the GH is going to be all singles, more like post 48.
#61 - Posted 8/14/08 @8:31PM by PetieLee [contact]

Hey Zitro, I was having a rough Rush Withdrawal day today and then I came home to this great indie label move news...I just wanted to throw in a suggestion for a small tour because if a Rush woman can dream, it might as well be big!!! Not saying Rush will do a mini-tour but if they somehow do - imagine how quickly us RIABers would be grabbing up those tickets?

For now...I'm back to my Geddy (oh I meant Rush, lol) concert pics and S&A Live on the iPod!

Love da Geddy! Miss da Geddy!
#62 - Posted 8/14/08 @9:22PM by Kelly D [contact]

Completely off-topic but I just got back from Tropic Thunder. Freaking AMAZING! Totally hilarious. . . go see it!

On-topic: I like "Neurotica." I consider it a preview of Neil's cynicism and sardonic tones in "The Stars Look Down."
#63 - Posted 8/14/08 @9:44PM by Mystic Rythms [contact]

This is exciting and very positive news! More independence is a great direction for Rush, a free thinking group of musicians that aren't afraid to experiment. I say yeah to the big record label handcuffs coming off. An independent label is probably going to provide Rush with the greater independence they need to create their magic. I can't wait to hear their next album release with the new label!

Here's hoping Neil remains fit and healthy. Be careful out there, Neil. Please.

Great comments! In my opinion Rounder is the right label to take Rush into R40. Indie has evolved througout the years and this is right up the boys alley. Tell me I am wrong after watching this short Tube vid:

link

I think we are in store for killer tracks off this piece. It sure indicates the longevity of the band and the exposure of the unexposed. This is not a test! Combine the Rounder label with Nick Raskulinecz and you have the ultimate in progressive rock Armageddon.

Out of all the factors that the experts say contribute to Global Warming, Rush's next 6 years will be at the top of the list.

This combo could be the largest rat pellet ever. Better stock up on the Pepto and the Tumms.................

Just happen to come across a little feature on MSN music - Fabulous and 50. Imagine my surprise when our Boys show up! Of course we know they're fabulous - it's just nice when the rest of the world acknowledges it!

lilvictory-Not exactly true but I love how they say this trio has ROCKED North America for 40 years. Gotta love the ring of that!

Is there a way to view the "Fabulous and 50" article for us non-MSN users?

good news indeed....as Dinoman mentioned above, more new Rush coming our way :) also good points by Sean and i will add to it.....a great idea would be to offer primo seats and meet & greets within the cd sleeve......obviously they would need to have an idea of where the tour would be heading and release these "special" discs in those cities....how cool would it be knowing that there's a great possibility that the cd you're buying contains a meet & greet or a front row ticket......that would be unreal.....with the purchase of every cd you're guaranteed something, a ticket somewhere, a t-shirt voucher, something.....obviously they would charge more for these but they can make it a little cheaper than if you buy disc and ticket separate, but the price would be worth the chance of scoring ...this would be a great way for Rush and other bands to fight the theft of their music.......if bands offered this wouldn't more people purchase cd's again????.....just some random thoughts...........

btw, did anyone catch gorbachev on Larry King????....they should strip him of his nobel piss prize, what a fraud......i hate to be negative but things are getting scarier by the day......Russia, Iran & China, pretty powerful and frightening........how strange is it that a country can bulldoze their way into one of their neighbors countries for bogus reasons and have the US condemn them and it mean nothing...Russia is just like, "so, what are you gonna do about it!!!???"...sorry, but most people i know are like most other Americans, simple, and don't give a shit about anything but their paycheck.......at least i know Rush fans aren't simple ;)

All around this great big world
All the crap we had to take
Bombs and basement fallout shelters
All our lives at stake

The bloody revolution
All the warheads in its wake
All the fear and suffering
All a big mistake
All those wasted years
All those precious wasted years
Who will pay?

OUR CHILDREN WILL PAY A VERY HEAVY PRICE.....

If we burn our wings
Flying too close to the sun
If the moment of glory
Is over before it's begun
If the dream is won -
Though everything is lost
we will pay the price,
But we will not count the cost

it may have been said above (did not read all the posts), but after seeing that "indie" link and hearing the various interviews, sounds like they were reading lyrics (kind'a) from either Freewill or Spirit of the Radio...

I'm thrilled with the idea of new Rush (of course), but also from the standpoint that my son (9 now) did not join me for a concert this tour...

BUT NEXT!

:)

Watching the Olympics and missed out on the the Roc Man comment! The clip was a trailer from a movie with 80% of the indie comments rippin right down Rush's alley. Throw away the money issues and a few others because of them being a seasoned, long tenored band. Throw in a side order of a producer who help the boys produce a masterpiece and tell me why I'm wrong.

I can have something to read in the AM! Rush on brother!

nice find lilvictory (#66) - I'd say, for the most part, they are in very good company.

nice post indeed, always good to see Rush mentioned and portrayed positively! Maybe overload (I posted this earlier) but for anyone who missed it and is interested in this essay on RAND, RUSH, AND ROCK, read it here if you like: link

#76: For the most part is right...the one that jumps out at me though, is Tanya Tucker. Wow. Not my intent to be mean, but I think she looks *way* older than 50.

LanceTheShred #67 - It has a beautiful ring to it and certainly where this is heading! Quite honestly I didn't even notice the little bit of misinformation - I was just so blown away to see them pop up amongst the usual celebs when they have so often been overlooked. I darn near fell out of my chair! Probably had better get used to seeing them mentioned along the mainstream media - I'm certain there is much more to come!!!

Good morning ladies.....

SirLance, you said to tell you that you're wrong after i watch the video, i watched the video and then told you that you were wrong.........nice find btw, i agree with everything you said....the only thing however is the whole term "Indie" has kind of taken on a new meaning......if someone wants to truly be an "Indie" band they wouldn't sign with anyone, they would be independent, that's how it used to be anyway, and isn't that what the word means?????????.........i don't think that's the reason Rush has signed with Rounder, to be recognized as an "Indie" band, it's more of what they stand for overall and obviously they have built up a relationship with them already.........
#81 - Posted 8/15/08 @9:11AM by Sean [contact]

I think it should be properly noted that Ed is saying the band is in negotiations with Rounder, nothing about a signing yet. Do they have a working relationship with them...yes. But I bet if Rush are in negotiations with Rounder they are probably in negotiations fielding offers from other prospects.

#77 freewilly - just spent the last 90 minutes slogging through "Rush, Rand, and Rock" THANKS!!! The scholarly article is about reads about as THICK as language gets, but was compelling enough to keep reading.

On a separate thread, if we dare Ed, it would be fascinating to see what RIABers make of it.

On first pass, I agree with one of the scholars referenced that "Rush has been unfairly burdened..." with it's association with Ayn Rand, that miserable, hypocritical chain-smoking, cancer-ridden, never-smiling, rock-hating, pessimistic, pseudo-intellectual product of anti-social thought.

To try to align lyrycist Peart or Our Band with a particular brand of political thought is missing the point, although it is an interesting debate.

This fan feels that Peart and Co. were simply inspired Rand's "antidistisablishmentarianism" and had a great deal of fun incorporating this into early songs (Anthem, 2112, Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, etc) and did an outstanding job of it. However, a rock band isn't a creedo or philosophy. Rush continued expressing it's creativity through a range of belief systems, most recently Buddism (Wind Blows).

On a less brain-straining note, it's AMAZING how many Rush tunes the author has referenced and deconstructed. Truley a Rush fan who can call himself a Professor!!!

and soooo glad that Rush is discussing an extended future!!!
#84 - Posted 8/16/08 @1:33AM by josheverist [contact]

I'm probably dreaming, but with that title, it'd be great to hear something actually from 2009.

#80 - by rocinante5m... I think you bring up a very valid point about the "Indie" labels. It does make sense that RUSH would want to move to a label that represents what they stand for overall.

I love RUSH not just for the music but for the ethics, morals and humanity they display and operate on.

I have been a female RUSH fan for a for a quarter of a century. I hope they have RUSH nursing homes in the future, before I go to RUSH heaven (lol) :)

Forgive me if this topic has already been discussed, but is there any chance that the tracks from "Vapor Trails" that make it onto the greatest hits album will be from the remaster, referred to off and on over the years? Whatever happened to that whole project? There are some really good songs on that album and I would still love to hear them the way the band intended them to sound.
