Rush DVD status update; tentative November 4th release
Posted at 12:10PM | comments (39)

If you read Tuesday night's Atlanta open thread, you already know that the band filmed the show. Despite some very inclement weather (2 inches of hail and 80mph winds!) which caused a slight delay (8:30 instead of 8:00), there was a huge crowd on hand and Rush had a number of HD cameras from FogoLabs in place. The main purpose for the filming was to capture video of the new songs - Red Barchetta, The Trees, Ghost of a Chance, 2112, and Neil's drum solo for bonus footage on the upcoming DVD, but the entire show was filmed for posterity. There were two very large swinging boom HD cameras on either end back by the end of the seated section just before the lawn. Those swung back and forth for the entire show. There were two manned stationary cameras on the side of either far section (one for Geddy and one for Alex). They had two cameras behind Neil with one attached to his kit, one camera on top of a pole over where the sound board was located and Alex had a stationary camera at his feet. There were also two on platforms near the spotlights on the roof in the back. These were all in addition to the standard in-house cameras in the photo pit. Apparently the footage was to head immediately back to FogoLabs for processing after the show so it could be ready for the DVD - which now has a working release date of November 4th if all goes according to schedule. Alex and Geddy will be taking the next several weeks off before putting their attention towards adding their finishing touches to the DVD and Neil is working on the packaging.

Good news, always from Rush. I was at the Rotterdam show and I'm very happy there (assumably) will be extra material on the dvd of the second S&A leg of the tour... Rush rules, forever!

I don't know about this one guys...

I don't like the idea that they filmed this concert. Maybe I am reading into it a bit too much, but maybe they wanted to capture what "might" be their last live performance...

Don't get me wrong, I am stoked about seeing this stuff on the new DVD, (as extra's I'm sure) but I just am puzzled at this move to film the show. They have already said how expensive it is to rent that equipment.

First the donation of money in LA
Then the Colbert Report show
Now the Tibet music thing
and the Rock Band video...

How many people have seen "The Bucket List"

Are the boys "crossing out their list" of things to do before hanging it up for good?

Can't wait for November, LIVE RUSH DVD.

I hope the DVD is cut as a continuous concert experience, a la Rush in Rio and R30, for the most part. I dislike how the CD cuts off the audience sounds abruptly at the end of the song (and sometimes the beginning of the next song) and restarts just as abruptly for the next tune. I can't wait until November!

Things for RUSH to add to their "Bucket List"

- Make kick ass music AT LEAST until 2012
- Head back into the studio after a well deserved break
- Catch dozens of Blue Jay games
- Ride motorcycle from Alaska to South America
- Reopen the Tiki Bar

Just having fun...

Naw Denny...I say you may be reading too much into this. I think the only thing that would keep them from recording and touring again is if poor health falls on the band, let's hope that doesn't happen. I give them until Spring, and we'll hear a few rumblings about new material. Like I said.....just pray that their health stays as good as it is now.
#11 - Posted 7/25/08 @12:31PM by freewilly [contact]

Hmmmm I kind of understand your point Denny, BUT there's so much enthousiasm in recent interviews with the might trio that makes me pretty confident this will not be the last thing we see and HEAR from RUSH!
#12 - Posted 7/25/08 @12:35PM by dssnhopper [contact]

Denny:

Possible scenario, very true. Based on some of the things the guys have said, I'm hoping this is not their swan song. I too, cannot wait for the S&A DVD.

Why do all my other/former rock favorites look like amateurs compared to RUSH? RUSH just seems from another planet... so advanced in every aspect. Okay I get that RUSH again, so happy they're on this planet.

WOOOHOOO!!! THanks Ed!!

This show was incredible- much better than opening night. I would like to see this show released on DVD in its entirety. All the people I talked to who had seen them multiple times were just amazed. The guys were on.

I am worried about Alex however. He now has more Barbies than all my nieces combined.

Screw the DVD...keep touring
#18 - Posted 7/25/08 @1:00PM by kiaroskuro [contact]

This is exciting! I have a feeling this isn't going to be their last tour. It seems like they're having such a good time making music and touring, even if it isn't Neil's favorite thing to be on the road for months at a time.

I can't wait for the S&A DVD!
#19 - Posted 7/25/08 @1:04PM by Praetorian [contact]

more Rush for Christmas presents!!!!
#20 - Posted 7/25/08 @1:07PM by eastcobb [contact]

I was there and when I saw all the cameras I told my nephew that it looked like it was being filmed. But then I thought, well maybe they want a LOT of cameras for the projection screens on stage.

What a fun show it was, especially considering how BAD the weather was just before show time!
#21 - Posted 7/25/08 @1:07PM by Praetorian [contact]

Denny-very funny....I'd like to see Neil ride from the North Pole to the South Pole?

LEXRSTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bet Neil could tear it up on a Ski-Doo!

I don't believe I'm saying this, but I can't wait for November

"I don't like the idea that they filmed this concert. Maybe I am reading into it a bit too much, but maybe they wanted to capture what "might" be their last live performance... "

Well, that's not accurate. They filmed the next-to-last show so I doubt they did it for sentimental reasons.

I can't wait to see the packaging.
#25 - Posted 7/25/08 @4:20PM by yyz_6785 [contact]

#3 and #19...how can you wait for Christmas??? I will be buying this RIGHT AWAY!!! I've always wanted to be at a concert that was filmed, and that finally happened in Atlanta 3 nights ago!
#26 - Posted 7/25/08 @4:50PM by dinoman [contact]

#23, yes, but Atlanta was SUPPOSED to be the last show before Indy got rescheduled.
#27 - Posted 7/25/08 @4:59PM by fordman [contact]

Sure wish there was a way we could buy a copy of the Atlanta show, especially if only the new songs will be used. Had there been a setup similar to instantlive where you could get a dvd of the show after it was over, I gladly would have paid $20 or so for a copy.
#28 - Posted 7/25/08 @5:05PM by fordman [contact]

Forgot to add, maybe they will release two dvds (one for the 07 show and one for the 08). Maybe a little overkill but I really want a copy of the full Atlanta show!
#29 - Posted 7/25/08 @5:42PM by UberDelegate86 [contact]

I have listened to the Live CD of S&A and like it... but I was there in Atlanta Tuesday night and that show was just amazing! Blew me away from the other time I saw them in Orlando and anything I've seen on DVD! I'm hoping they just scratch the Rotterdam show (sorry!) for the DVD and put on the Atlanta show! The show was deserving of a DVD!

And #27: I agree, if they had a version of it immediately after, I would have shelled out the cash easily!

Also, correct me if I am wrong, but I thought Geddy said in an interview right around this leg of the tour kicked off that he'd been writing all during '07 and was doing the same into '08's tour... Maybe I was dreaming, or wishful thinking...

I think we still have a few more years left in the boys before they decide to hang it up.

Long Live Rush!
#30 - Posted 7/25/08 @7:38PM by Wall05

I can't wait!
#31 - Posted 7/25/08 @8:40PM by main monkey business [contact]

UberDelegate86...you are correct. Geddy did say he'd been writing, and that they had some material ready for a new studio recording possibly in the Spring of 2010. Alex chimed in the same thing. Rush is not hanging it up yet. The demand for these guys is going up...not down. They are still a mainstream act, and can go on tour with their new material...And I've seen three shows this tour, and people are FINALLY cheering and singing the new material at their shows. Anyhow, Rush is still mainstream, and they don't need to become a "nastalgia band" to sell tickets. With tv shows, interviews in certain publications, and lots of young fans in attendance at their shows, they're just hitting their peak. Plus look at the latest interview with Alex Lifeson.....Are they hanging it up???? No way! I'll say this though....when that sad, sad day comes.....The farewell tour is going to be INCREDIBLE!
#32 - Posted 7/25/08 @9:18PM by shadowguitar [contact]

For the record, they also filmed the July 9th T.O. show.
#33 - Posted 7/26/08 @4:57PM by PetieLee [contact]

MMB: Rush is "mainstream" - since when? I think they are a supreme live act with great longevity but "mainstream"???? Hardly! If that were the case, they'd be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! ROFL!

I was at that Atlanta show and it was the best I've ever seen Rush! It was amazing! I can't wait for the DVD! Ooooh I can't wait!!! It's gonna be grand!
#34 - Posted 7/26/08 @6:01PM by DaveTinNY [contact]

Yeah, Baby... Bring on the BLURAY HD DVD! Please. :-)
#35 - Posted 7/26/08 @6:03PM by UberDelegate86 [contact]

MMB... Thank you! Glad to know I wasn't delusion! Knew I heard it either on Rockline or the S&A Radio Special thingy....
#36 - Posted 7/27/08 @9:13AM by main monkey business [contact]

Ok PetieLee....I guess for you I have to clarify myself. When I say "mainstream", I'm not talking about "top 40" type music or bands. I'm saying that Rush doesn't have to rely on old relics or nostalgia to make money (aka: Kiss, Van Halen, etc). They can put out new material and it sells, they can tour in concert with it, and people come and enjoy the new music (the crowd stayed and sang with the new stuff in Indy). It's played on the radio, they get interviews on the new stuff, it's gotten good reviews in the press. That's what I mean by being mainstream....they don't have to resort to being a "nostalgia band" to make a living. Hope that explains it for you.
#37 - Posted 7/27/08 @10:27AM by main monkey business [contact]

That sounded a little rough petie....didn't mean it that way!
#38 - Posted 7/27/08 @3:21PM by PetieLee [contact]

No problemo, MMB! I gotcha!

***Love da Geddy! Miss da Geddy already!***
