Sam Dunn on the upcoming Rush documentary
Posted at 11:37AM | comments (23)

Scott McFadyen and Sam DunnAbout a year ago we learned that filmmakers Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn - creators of the critically acclaimed, award-winning documentary Metal: A Headbanger's Journey and its soon-to-be-released follow-up Global Metal - were planning on creating a documentary on Rush. They were present at last year's RushCon and the shows in Toronto getting footage and interviewing fans. The official press release about the project then came out in October of last year. The plan was originally to release it later this year, but the duo decided to first put out an Iron Maiden documentary that they were also working on. It now looks like the Rush documentary won't see the light of day until sometime later next year. Sam and Scott were recently interviewed by iConnotations and when asked about the Rush documentary, Sam Dunn had this to say:

... Well it's in the early stages yet. It's not a film that's going to be based around a particular tour like the [Iron] Maiden doc. It's going to be more of a history of the band and a chronicle or testament to their influence over the years. Because you guys know how influential Rush is on musicians and we just feel that nobody's ever really told their story. You know, it's funny - we've been listening to Rush for decades and I really don't feel like I know who they are still. They're quite private and I don't really have a sense of what makes them tick or the struggles that they've been through. So what we're aiming for is to try and pull that out and make it kind of a human story about how they've changed over the years - some of the struggles and experiences they've been through. And then - at the same time - show how influential they are. They're Canada's biggest rock band and they're one of the biggest rock bands in the world. So it's high time someone did something. ...

You can listen to the entire interview at this location or download the mp3 directly at this link. The Rush question occurs at about the 27-minute mark. Thanks to BlabberMouth.net for the heads up.

I love Iron Maiden. Anyone who has a problem with that can listen to Triumph.
#7 - Posted 5/27/08 @1:27PM by titoagogo [contact]

I also must add that I am so grateful that Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn are doing the Rush documentary. Their film, "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" is an amazing film that even someone who is not a fan of heavy metal can appreciate.
P.S. I like Triumph too.

Good Day to all!

Have not had much time to post nor read but still listening to plenty of Rush in my travels. Big Hemispheres kick lately. All is very tasty indeed (like you didn't know).

Rush gets the short end of the stick again on this documentary. I am thinking that Scott and Sam saw that Rush's presence in the music world was a little more extreme then they expected. We will see.

Our Air Band was a major success considering we had only met each other 24 hours before the show and had a very short period of time to rehearse. The set list was changed due to multiple reasons and our Letterman appearance nixed on their end. If they would have had a cancellation we would have been LIVE but no go. Sparks and Miller Lite hired a videographer and it looks like this gig will turn into some kind of commercial attracting multiple markets. They were highly impressed. Anyway for a good laugh, check out the top video on the Air Band tour link below. The only Rush I did was the 1st 1:26 of Neil's drum solo from Exit Stage Left-It's about halfway in the video. Man that was tough

Back at you Rush Freaks later-3 weeks till Philly!!

I don't think that movie will be that much personal, specially on Neil's perspective. They're way too private. It would be cool to see some kind of "Cribs" tour of their homes, checkout where they practice, but that's never gonna happend.

Anyway, I've noticed the new tour book, has a preview of the cover for the Snakes & Arrows Live DVD and I wonder what extra features will include. Also the easter eggs, hopefully the missing tracks from R30 or a hidden show from this 2008 leg.

My trio, here we come! on our way to Edmonton for the concert tonight! Can't wait! Proud to introduce them to the next generation this time!
May the next generation appreciate them at least as I do and learn to know it is the best band ever!

QUOTE: "You know, it's funny - we've been listening to Rush for decades and I really don't feel like I know who they are still."

Neil's just gonna hate reading that.

Yeah, this Doc will totally depend on the type of access Sam has to the band... If he has an opened door into the guys world it would be worth any wait, but I want it YESTERDAY. I think Neil alone could put the brakes on this thing, but then again, he could also say this is the only time I'm gonna do this... Only time will tell...

Any hope of a documentary is better than none at all.

Lamb Saag of course you know who Rush is... its three guys who love to make music.

Definitely looking forward to any kind of an "insiders" view and of course an interview that could accompany this.

However...Rush has kept out of the public eye outside of touring for so long, why and how do these guys think they can pull this off? Does anyone else have information that I might be missing here?
#17 - Posted 5/27/08 @5:46PM by GeddyGirl [contact]

Hey all. Keeping my fingers crossed along with y'all for this doc, but I have to agree with bravado - how in the world are these guys going to manage to go "where no man (or rush chick) has gone before"? One can hope....

Lance, can't wait to see your vid. Once again, it's too "fun" to be allowed through the school filters, but I will make sure I see it when I'm somewhere with wi-fi.

Always lurking,

GG

The Maiden dock is "going to be based around a particular tour" so it makes sense that it would be completed first, but, they seem to really want tell the Rush story right, so it will be worth the wait. I really enjoyed Metal:A Headbangers Journey. Great doc.

Does anyone else think the blonde guy on the right has a face like Geddy Lee?
#20 - Posted 5/28/08 @10:52AM by NEcromancer [contact]

To #'s 3 and 4, I would imagine Dunn is a Rush fan otherwise, Geddy would never have been asked to do the doc. Additionally, Dunn indicated Maiden is his favorite band so it's not surprising to know that's the direction he took.

I realize it's shameless self-promotion, but I've been drinking during the day and I don't care! I love you, Ed!

There was another article about Sam and his new documentary 'Global Metal' along with very quick blurb about the Rush documentary. Here's the link link

To be honest, I'm a bit apprehensive.

There is, to a point that I enjoyed "A Headbangers Journey" but was a little erked when some key bands were missing that were an influence to the World of Heavy Metal (and that the Film-maker being and Anthropologist). But it was "Global Metal" that was truly awe-inspiring to see how other Countries, especially in oppressive regimes, look at, listen and Perform/Create Metal music with a totally different (or at-least more serious) view, as it is a "Voice" for their plight.
It made me proud to be a Metal Head, but possibly it would enlighten someone who isn't, to understand what Metal can be (as for me, I don't care about the Satanic or Gory, but the stuff of High Musicianship, of something to say. If its either Dark or Light, its an expression of frustration, exhilaration of Life, The World, Politics, Religion... much like Folk music).

Saying all this, I want to see this distributed to a Wider Audience, to the people who wonder "Who is Rush, and why should I care". I cant emphasize what this Band means to me, and how many times people think they are a joke, and its mainly because of Geddy's Voice, well I love it as all of you do, yet we acknowledge that it is unusual, but each component of Rush makes this band unique. This isn't the Rolling Stones churning out the same crap for over 30 years living complacent, and "I'm just a fan because its cool". No, I'm into Rush because they are craftsmen, "Each" song is crafted, not filler (and we always hope, pray and wonder what song they will perform live :P).

So this Film should "Enlighten" the Uninitiated, and possibly show Bands of other genre's pay respect as well
(As far as Prog/Metal goes, I think its important to ask People like Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Queensryche, Meshuggah and the like as well! Even if the Director doesn't like them- just speculation ;).
And it should have the Power of the "Rush in Rio" Doc. How their music can move people, inspire! (Scenes should be shown of it within the Movie).

Anyways, thats my 20cents. I just want to see this done right, or I'll be disappointed and wish someone else to come along to make a proper Documentary and be pleasantly "surprised".
Thanks for your indulgence all, PrOg On!
