Rush Star Hollywood Walk of Fame Project
Posted at 10:30AM | comments (69)

Hollywood Walk of Fame StarmanI wanted to take a few moments to alert everyone to a campaign that's currently underway to get Rush a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. If you are a Rush fan, it's very likely you have heard the name Donna Halper. Donna is credited with discovering Rush while working at WMMS-FM in my hometown of Cleveland back in 1974. She was also pivotal in getting them signed to a record contract, and they dedicated their first two albums to her. Donna along with Rush fans extraordinaire Keith and Kevin Purdy are spearheading this project and have already received the blessing of the band and their management. They could also use some help from us - the fans. Since the nominations are reviewed in June each year, they are soliciting testimonials from Rush fans across the world about how the band and their music has played a positive and meaningful role in their lives. There is no format per se - emails, letters, etc. are fine. They simply need to be well-written and come from the heart. If possible, please send your testimonials to kdpurdy@hotmail.com by Friday, May 23rd so they can be packaged up and sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame committee.

As part of the nomination effort, an account will be set up at some point to collect the $25,000 needed to fund the Hollywood Walk of Fame star. The money is not due until 30 days prior to an eventual induction ceremony, the date of which would be the band's choosing if (when hopefully) they are chosen. That date realistically would be no sooner than mid-year 2009. They hope to have the account set up later this summer and will keep everyone posted.

Donna, Keith and Kevin want to thank everyone in advance for their assistance in this effort. The image above of the Hollywood Walk of Fame Rush Starman is courtesy reader Matt R.

This is great news!!!! Count me in, I will defintely send a e-mail for the great campaign. This would put a huge stamp on the impact the band has had on so many people. RIAB thanks as always for the latest in Rush news and as always FEEL THE RUSH

Awesome! Rush on!
#3 - Posted 5/12/08 @10:52AM by Pat [contact]

This sounds too good to be possible. Any indication whether this is an actual possibility? How are these things chosen? Is it a matter of money? And as much as I think that star looks awesome, would the powers-that-be allow such a modification of the standard star? I mean, I'll lend my support, but I may not be getting my hopes up yet.
#4 - Posted 5/12/08 @10:57AM by mtjeffs [contact]

that would be too cool!

Hey! if nobody's claiming, it, does that mean I can do it?....
Oh hell... FIRST!!!! jejeje
(this is probably the closest I'll ever get anyway!)

Very cool and interesting initiative... I also have some doubts about it, but let's see how it unfolds.. As for testimonials, heck, we have tons available right here on the blog!!... I will see if I can summon the muse and write my own. Hm.. maybe a little hemispheres will help with that...

"how the band and their music has played a positive and meaningful role in their lives."

GAWD THIS WILL BE A LONG LETTER!!!!!!

I'd better get started.

Holly cow!! someone copied my post (#26 from the Vegas thread) and posted it to the G.O.A.T. blog... Whatta fk?

Gee... one way or another I'm starting to wish that contest thing to be over already. If it could be now, better, since we are winning... LOL
#12 - Posted 5/12/08 @11:53AM by unktehila [contact]

hermy....

that dance version of Tom Sawyer cracked me up. not my cup of tea, but really not half bad. an interesting homage.

#14 - Posted 5/12/08 @12:06PM by New World Fan [contact]

BTW we'd better start voting again because they've opened up another poll for the same 2 albums.

"GAWD THIS WILL BE A LONG LETTER!!!!!!"

Perfectly said NWFAN!

Hiyya everyone..... 7 shows in 19 days till I'm in Rush-ie heaven, again!

What a great idea...Let's hope the Walk of Fame Committee is a little more open-minded that the R&R HOF committee :)

#17 - Posted 5/12/08 @12:45PM by sunlightoncrom [contact]

NWF, its posted at 10:40 am on the "in the words of rush" section comments.

At least whoever posted it did not pretend to be me... we have enough with Lance's clone to have to deal with more...

The whole deal has started to get old, but there is actually some interestin developments going on there... they have put in a new voting system for the 2112-Peace bracket, plus they are now pollin on what to do about it, whether to keep the ongoing results, use the new ones, disqualify the bands or move on.

That is indeed a good question... whatta you guys think?
#18 - Posted 5/12/08 @1:05PM by Syrinx2112

Not that I care either way since Rush Rules no matter what anyone thinks...but how great would it be to have a star on the walk of fame (also a nice way to say stick it to those losers at the R&R Hall of fame).
#19 - Posted 5/12/08 @1:16PM by Joe

I'm kind of against this one. The Hollywood Walk of Fame? Is this for Alex's cameo as a cop?

I just can't picture a Rush Star right there in la-la land next to the guy who played Radar on M*A*S*H. This doesn't fit their image at all. I say we let this one pass. Just my 2 cents
#20 - Posted 5/12/08 @1:18PM by Syrinx2112

Hi Joe,

I guess your perspective does make sense, considering the number of losers in Hollywood.
#21 - Posted 5/12/08 @1:19PM by New World Fan [contact]

Oh yeah I see it now... damn dude whoever you are make a comment of your own if you don't have permission from the rightful owner of the post.

I know, this letter will take forever to write if we gotta list it all. Most people won't have it done by May 23rd 2112, let alone 2008.
#22 - Posted 5/12/08 @1:30PM by Syrinx2112

Just found this link which shows some of the celebs who will be receiving stars in 2008...Christina Aguilera???, Ricky Martin???

link
#23 - Posted 5/12/08 @2:03PM by Joe

exactly Syrinx..I think as Rush Fans we should repectfully decline this invitation...now I've given 4 cents
#24 - Posted 5/12/08 @2:17PM by Ricbass4003 [contact]

I think most of the goofy stars that you mentioned like Christina Aguilera and Ricky Martin and others all pay for their own star. At least if we can come up with the bucks, Fans will buy the star. How great is that!
#25 - Posted 5/12/08 @2:19PM by sunlightoncrom [contact]

Hm. Funny thing is, the band already gave this guys their green light to pursue the issue...

Maybe Geddy likes Ricky Martin.... naaahhhh!
#26 - Posted 5/12/08 @2:43PM by unktehila [contact]

i doubt Geddy digs Ricky Martin, but we know Neil really liked NSYNC (or was it Backstreet Boys? - YIKES) and is crazy about Madonna.

i don't think a Hollywood star is really "up Rush's alley" - seems to go against the grain of what makes Rush so cool, but i do think they would have the sweetest looking star on the strip.
#27 - Posted 5/12/08 @2:49PM by Spindrifter [contact]

#25 ~ Unless, Al or Neil have a thing for Christina Ag.

Hmm... Nope!

~~~
Just my 2 cents, if its worth anything.
I think that it would be awesome to see Rush among the stars. But, to me, the Hollywood Walk of Fame isnt and shouldnt be for bands. Maybe, bands that come out of LA.
But, after the last few years of us trying to get our boys into R&R Hall with no success. My main question and thought is this.... Would their entry with Starman into the Walk help put a little punch into their entry into the R&R?
At least I'd have to think that Rolling Stone mag would be covering the story since Ag and Martin would be there.
#28 - Posted 5/12/08 @2:56PM by Armeee [contact]
If it cost $25000 for a stupid Hollywood square, then I would rather see the cash go towards a charity.
It is absolutely dumb to raise cash to pay for an award. It should be awarded on merit. And yes..... RUSH is deserving!
So I will save my time and not email a testimonial....
#29 - Posted 5/12/08 @3:04PM by djchachi [contact]
My personal opinion is that, as U.S. Rush fans, we owe something to Neil, Geddy, and Alex for bringing us everything they've got year after year after year through live performances and albums/dvds. Since the R&R Hall of Fame will not recognize Rush (yet), at least the Hollywood Walk of Fame will acknowledge their contributions to the recording industry here in the U.S. If nothing else, our testimonials will keep Rush knowing what they mean to us and motivate them to continue touring and recording with the vigor and drive that have propelled them to superstardom over the past 30 years!
As for the Hollywood Walk of Fame "Starman" image, I created it to help us visualize into reality that which is in our minds. I firmly believe that if one (or many) can visualize the positive, it WILL happen. Of course the circle with the figure is something that a "rouge" (or just sneaky) Rush fan will have to throw down on top of the real star in the form of a vinyl sticker or stencil...not that I'm condoning it, the star just seems to lend itself to that sort of special Rush-ification.
This can really happen folks! Donna, Keith, and Kevin have gotten the ball rolling, all we have to do is write down those feelings we get when we hear: "Living on a lighted stage..." and the rest will be Rush history!
#30 - Posted 5/12/08 @3:41PM by mtjeffs [contact]
my wife subscribes to US, PEOPLE, NATIONAL ENQUIRER, STAR among others and I a assuming that most of these rags keep her updated on the latest walk of fame "star" .....so personally I would love to see this being done. Just the tone of her voice when she reads that my boys "RUSH" made it! would be a sweet sound. (My wife is the one that rolls her eyes when I tell her that I locked in tickets to one more rush show this tour---and her commits of neglecting the wife and kids thing keep getting stronger)
After 7 years of marriage and 11 shows (over 50 lifetime)I am taking her to the Atlantic city show (first row) in hopes that it won't be toooooo close for a first timer. wish me luck......... And let's get that star in!!
#31 - Posted 5/12/08 @4:41PM by eastcobb [contact]
If there's ever been a band that is non-Hollywood, it's Rush. I just can't see them kneeling down on the Walk of Fame in front of their "star." I can see them being accepted into the RRHOF before I can see them accepting this.
#32 - Posted 5/12/08 @5:18PM by oceanbridge [contact]
never really understood this thing about halls of fame and stars and stuff, guess it must be an american thing. Who cares if you are or are not in a hall of fame. Once your music becomes a museum piece you are dead. This star stuff is nonsense based on Hollywoods tourist requirement nothing to do with Rush or any other real music leave all that stuff to entertainers who need the self congragulation to stand in for a complete lack of creative talent.
#7--Hermy--Ciao! That Stimulators version of Tom Sawyer was a great listen. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and i'd say latin dance bands covering Rush is the best tribute. The walk of fame stuff may well go the way of grammies, and who cares? What's key is that the band rocks, and that people who's ears are open are loving RUSH!
#34 - Posted 5/12/08 @5:38PM by cameraeye1961 [contact]
Why is this kind of validation necessary? I mean it's the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Who gives a rat's ass? One of the great things about being a Rush fan, to me, was the fact that the boys have always been dismissed by the mainstream. They've always done their own thing, and we, as fans, have appreciated the fact that they never compromised their musical ideals. We know they're the greatest band of all time, so who needs Hollywood, or even Cleveland (RRHOF) for that matter? Just my opinion.
Hello boys and girls!!!!!.....i'm kind of split on this, in a way i'm with cameraeye on this (#34), but then again sometimes i get a little frustrated when the boys don't get the respect and recognition they deserve, but then again the world consists of 90% simpletons and the rest are Rush Fans,lol.....i think you know what i'm saying, most people haven't got a clue about anything, let alone music, they just get spoon fed and programmed to accept things and crave things that the powers that be want everyone to accept and crave....uh oh, better get off the box.......if the Boys want it and would enjoy getting it then i guess i'm for it too.......
WOW!!! Spindrift on the live disc is sick, Big Al's solo at the end is off the meter!!!!!!!...another example of the live version being better than the studio..........
Where's everyone at????.....Earth to SirLance, Necro, Drummerdad, NWF, Manny, Come in!!!!!!!!
#38 - Posted 5/12/08 @6:54PM by rocinante5m [contact]
on a sadder note, it's really saddens me seeing what happened in China, especially with how many students and children perished and got injured........Let's hope the powers that be over there can do what's right and best for their people.....
#39 - Posted 5/12/08 @7:29PM by Wall05 [contact]
VOTE FOR RUSH IN THE FINALS HERE:
This is the FINALS, so plaese vote.
#40 - Posted 5/12/08 @8:00PM by perfect sphere [contact]
Isn't there a ROCK Walk of Fame-- not the one with all the movie stars and pop stars on Hollywood Blvd, but along the stretch of sidewalk by Guitar World on Sunset Blvd. I remember many years ago when Aerosmith did their star-unveiling there... Steven Tyler stuck his hands in the cement and exclaimed, "THANKS FOR THE MAMMERIES!!!"
It would seem more appropriate to have Rush's star along with other Rock luminaries (not stuck between Milton Berle and Pauly Shore), where rock fans in general can appreciate the setting. Or are we already talking about the same thing? :)
#41 - Posted 5/12/08 @8:06PM by perfect sphere [contact]
...although if Rush were put between Jerry Stiller (Stiller & Meara have a star), and The Three Stooges (they too have a star), well maybe that would work... although in 75 years people might not get the connection.
#42 - Posted 5/12/08 @8:28PM by unktehila [contact]
roc.... Spindrift on the live disc IS sick. so dark and heavy in that intro and outro. reminds me of Between The Wheels in that respect (also another S&A Live highlight for me)... SPindrift is probably my favorite S&A song on that offering, other than MalNar.
#43 - Posted 5/12/08 @8:35PM by rocinante5m [contact]
hey what's up unk??....good comparision to BTW, right on the $$$ with that one........
When I checked a few minutes ago, Wikipedia is listing John Rutsey as having died yesterday. Has anyone heard anything else about this or is it a hoax?
#45 - Posted 5/12/08 @8:43PM by ATG
I'm all for the Star, and plan to attend the induction.
They are true legends.
Nothing on google about Rutseys death.
But here's a treat:
#46 - Posted 5/12/08 @8:58PM by JesseZ [contact]
That's weird about Rutsey! If it's a hoax (let's hope), who the hell does that? Sick people out there.
Any info on attendance numbers?
From comments on here and my own two shows (Nokia/Veagas)I think ticket sales might be better than was thought in the early days of the tour...?
#47 - Posted 5/12/08 @9:01PM by TestForEcho09 [contact]
Hey all!
#48 - Posted 5/12/08 @9:03PM by unktehila [contact]
rOc ! those 2 songs have a similarity in vibe to me, cool that you hear/see it as well.
ATG... i love that Hemispheres video treat... i bookmarked that sucka and it's gonna be my morning coffee for awhile.
Neil is particularly badass on that clip. Geddy's voice not so hot, but man that's waaay up in the upper register.
#49 - Posted 5/12/08 @9:14PM by rocinante5m [contact]
hey syrinx, just took a look and saw that it lists him as dying May 11, 2008.....pretty strange that we haven't heard anything come over the wire yet....sad news if it's true....i don't think Wik would make such a grave mistake like that, no pun intended........
#50 - Posted 5/12/08 @9:15PM by syrinx [contact]
I've been all over the net searching for confirmation about Rutsey's death and have come up empty making me believe that it's a cruel joke. I just wanted to throw it out there in case any of you had heard anything to the contrary.
#51 - Posted 5/12/08 @9:23PM by rocinante5m [contact]
I think we need to summon the help of Mr. Ed on this one.....
ED, you here anything??????
#52 - Posted 5/12/08 @9:25PM by matt [contact]
It looks like an anonymous editor added Rutsey's death - I'm going to revert the edit myself since it is unsourced.
#53 - Posted 5/12/08 @10:17PM by theanalogkid [contact]
This Hollywood Walk of Fame thing is ridiculous. I love Rush as much as anybody else here, but this seems like we're grasping at straws. Since Rush will probably never get into the RRHOF, we'll settle for them getting any recognition they can get.
If Christina Aguilera is going to get in, then this HOF is the same as the one in Cleveland...a joke.
Count me out.
#54 - Posted 5/12/08 @10:17PM by Rob [contact]
I checked the CBC website...nothing there
This would be the ugly side of the wikipedia format.
Although I would have to agree that you can't get any further away from the whole Hollywood mentality than Rush, I can't help but love this idea. Just the fact that it is partially in the hands of the fans is amazing. I don't know of any other award / accolade of this magnitude that is in existence where we, the fans, have any say. As far as I know, all we have in our ability to show our support is by our purchases of all of Rush's recordings, merchandise and representing ourselves by a show of hands at all the concerts. All great, but I for one have always wished to be able to do a little more for the band that has done so very much for me.
I wish there were a project to erect a monument right outside the RRHOF - maybe of Starman mooning the hall.
I'll admit I have trouble envisioning Rush in Hollywood stooped over their star, but I have to say, the thought of a testament to the greatness of this band "carved in stone" kind of excites me. Just my opinion.
#57 - Posted 5/12/08 @11:09PM by Dino [contact]
Rutsey has not died. The last time the main News network (CBC) did ANY story with him mentioned was back in 2004. Don't give this sort of crap fuel. A little over a year and a half ago, rumours of Ged's death ran rampant.
Bunch of low life losers with nothing better to do while their wives or girlfriends are out earning money.
#58 - Posted 5/12/08 @11:41PM by LanceTheShred [contact]
Hola Rush Mateys! Been way too busy to post but a few thoughts:
Necro, Roc, DD2112 our live time is comin up gentlemen...I don't think that I have had this much excitement anticipating seeing the boys live in my life. My fav off the new Live CD is Spindrift as well. A powerful, sinister little piece of music. A giant rat pellet.....Yum
Damn it Hermy don't do that again with that Stimulator Rush song! LOL. That was difficult to digest however the girl singer was scrumptious.
Hollywood Walk of Fame huh? I'm kinda up in the air on this one. Since Donna received the blessing from the band it almost seems like they would like it and would be a nice fan offering. On the other hand I gotta agree with the Unk Man. Rush seems a little to cool for this (Coolest star ever though!) They are a in the shadows band. Musical greatness so extreme that only a few understand. We understand. The masses won't.
Rock Walk of Fame-I have no idea what these folks do and why doesn't Rush have their got damn hand prints there already? Google the RWOF and see who's on there. Just another example of being overlooked.
Jilly Bean-Your web pics are incredible and some of the facial captures are the best I ever seen. Where ya think fat boy Ross is this evening, rippin up the chaffing dishes at Cactus Willies? Way to go girl! Buy the way, if you go to the concert with LovLee, you will definitely be in orchestra right and she will claim all the tail shots of the Gedster..Double twine rope with the lavender scent hey Lov Lee?
That Hemispheres boot is delicious. I have an awesome black and white 2112 concert bootleg video from 1976 that is an absolute gem. A contact on YouTube copied it and sent it to me in the mail. I am going to copy it to my computer soon and can make copies. If anyone is interested let me know.
An absolute war inside that bracket poll has been going on the past few days. Rush fans literally muscled the Iron Maiden fans right off the mat and in their house. Funny thing about it is that I went out and purchased Powerslave yesterday to complete my IM collection. It rocks! Getting involved and trying to win meaningless little brackets like that have a lot to do with the paybacks for all the disrespect Rush has received over years. Someone was still posting my name for some reason???
A little rest for the boys is in order-I gotta funny feeling that they are going to bring the joint down in Illinois!! Rock em Moline-Yall in for treat
On a light-AIR note: I won the spot to perform as the drummer with America's Air Band-I did Tom Sawyer for my audition. Not like it's a big deal but all the air instrumentalists will be doing a show at the Knitting Factory in NYC on May 22. Now you know that this is
Fr-AIR-kin Hil-AIR-rious that we are playing in a live venue up Th-AIR in NYC with notta got damn bit of inventory. Heres the kicker, just got an e-mail today that Sparks Power Malt Beverage is trying to line us up to be on one of the Late Night Talk Shows. Bunch a
sc-Air-y no instrument playin MF's on TV! What the hell is the world coming too? Heres the link:
link
If anyone shows to New York on that evening, the Sparks are on me!! Rush On people!
WUMAHAGA-What Neil yells during the african segment of his drum solo on Mal Nar.
Just keep it coming.
hate to keep talking about him, but ross has edited his diary entry from that night he decided to critize the fans at the rush show.
i am glad it was taken out.
he crossed the line.
i hate how he said, turn and film the crowd, horrifying. wtf?! that was shitty.
you were in the crowd, dumbass.
ok i'm over it.
patiently waiting the moline show.
nice fresh, rested boys.
In light of the sad news of John's passing, perhaps the Hollywood Star can take on an addition meaning to us Rush fans (and the band)...in the memory of Rush's founding father John Rutsey.
-Matt R. (dj chachi)
#69 - Posted 6/25/10 @6:24PM by Rick4001 [contact]
Was on hand to see the boys in Hollywood this morning. Alex and Geddy were very gracious and appreciative -- Neil was a no-show. Was nice listening to Donna Harper say kind words about the band. Billy Corgan drew a hush from the crowd when he said the f-word in mentioning they "give a f***" about their music and integrity -- unexpected with the amount of kids there. Great day though, many happy fans got to shake hands with Geddy and get autographs. Check out my photobucket pics.
