Rush guest appearance at Foo Fighters show in Toronto
Posted at 8:41AM | comments (122)

The Foos with Alex and GeddyUPDATE - 3/25@9:58PM: There are a bunch of great photos from the show posted at the Foo Fighters website. They're mostly backstage and rehearsal shots. Thanks to Neilzy for the heads up.

UPDATE - 3/24@9:41AM: ... and another view (thanks pblaster).

UPDATE - 3/24@9:34AM: ... and yet another vid. This one is from closeup. You gotta love YouTube. Thanks once again to Toronto Writer for finding this.

UPDATE - 3/23@9:31PM: Here's another bootleg vid which also includes the entire Hawkins drum solo and the intro/outro to YYZ (thanks The Professor).

UPDATE - 3/23@10:07AM: Here it is! Thanks to Toronto Writer for the heads up.

----- snip -----

UPDATE - 3/23@10:04AM: There are articles at both JAM! and The Globe and Mail about the show. Thanks to cameron2112 for the links.

Foo Fighters fans who attended last night's show at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto got a BIG surprise about half way through the set. Right at the end of Taylor Hawkins' drum solo Dave Grohl announced that he wanted to introduce a couple of his friends ... Geddy Lee and Alex Fucking Lifeson! (apparently Alex has a middle name I wasn't aware of). Then came the opening chimes of YYZ and they jammed out the entire song. They left immediately afterwards without saying anything but Dave Grohl kept bragging about it for the rest of the show; We just had Rush play at a Foo Fighters concert, Taylor had the balls to play drums for Rush in Rush's hometown, etc. The Foo Fighters are huge Rush fans and got to know the guys through common producer Nick Raskulinecz. Many thanks to the lucky bastards who were at the show and gave me their reports - Brian, Amanda G and dingo. :)

Happy Easter to all!!

I hope someone got some video of the FooRush YYZ rip session! Holy Moli!!!! (Can't cuss even with symbols on bunny day)

Will be doing a major YouTube search in the next few days.
#4 - Posted 3/23/08 @9:20AM by Toronto Writer [contact]

Cool. Very cool. (I didn't even know the Foos were playing Toronto last night. Bummer.)

Anyway, this report leads me to believe two things:

1. Rush are indeed rehearsing in Toronto.
2. Rush are indeed rehearsing YYZ as part of their set.

I too hope someone caught video of this. Would be awesome to see.

Happy Ether everyone.

It was amaaaaaaaazing! When the drummer started playing the morse code rhythm I figured they were doing to do a cover, but wow, what happened was even better.
#11 - Posted 3/23/08 @10:11AM by unktehila

that's just flat out awesome. Taylor Hawking sounds like he did a hell of a jOb on the drumkit. cool as sh*t (i'll swear with symbol, not a big deal).

HUGE NEWS
********************

YES just annonced the tour dates for their 40th anniversary tour.

And for anyone going to the RUSH show at Hersheypark, it is very exciting to know that YES will be playing there the very next night!

I figuered this would be very exciting news for some people considering how awesome YES is, and the huge influence they had not only on RUSH but the entire Prog-Rock scene.

Are they just sticking to North America? Or are they releasing more dates later?
#19 - Posted 3/23/08 @11:13AM by Manny [contact]

Damn, now that's the way that song should be played. A little faster than they usually play it, and with more energy. Well, we now know that Peart indeed could be replaced.

that must've been a friggin dream come true for HAwkins.
#20 - Posted 3/23/08 @11:34AM by rocinante5m [contact]

Great detective work there Toronto writer,lol.....I thought that was cool as sh%$!!!!!.....and it sounded great......Manny, Manny, Manny, you know, i gave you the benefit of the doubt, even shared some of the same views with you on a couple of your last posts, but now i must revert back to one of the first posts i left to you.....you just do this to be an ass, it's obvious, and it's not funny dude.......you're probably one of those guys that complains about everything......you could go to a 4 star restaurant, have the best meal ever, be with the most beautiful girl, drink the finest wine, get the check picked up by the owner and you would say it was great and all but, the lighting in there sucked, it was too cold, they could've at least given me a better table, the piano player's tempo was too fast and I didn't like how she was wearing her hair......Dude, enough, even if your just joking around, it's not funny........btw, aren't you the guy that posted a little while back that you saw "Into the Wild" and said something like, terrible job, bad adaptation from the book or something like that???....I just saw it last night and i thought it was an amazing movie with a very powerful message, soundtrack (good job by Mr. Vedder) and ending.........Manny, did you ever get that hug i suggested you should get????.......For now on I say no one responds to Manny's negative comments or bad jokes.....let's ignore him, maybe he'll go away.......
#21 - Posted 3/23/08 @11:41AM by New World Fan [contact]

Oh I'm out of here before the shit hits the fan.

Happy Easter, All!

Manny- i defended you on here the other day when everyone was ripping on you, but hearing you say things like
"Well, we now know that Peart indeed could be replaced." and "They should drop the drum solo" really do make me question what you are thinking.

and by the way.....NEIL PEART COULD NEVER BE REPLACED!!!!!!!!
#24 - Posted 3/23/08 @12:23PM by dblagent1 [contact]

Holy crap that is cool!

Wonder if the whole show was taped?
#25 - Posted 3/23/08 @12:24PM by Wall05

*i am not trying to start a fight i just find it astonishing that anyone especially a RUSH fan could say that.
#26 - Posted 3/23/08 @12:30PM by Manny [contact]

Damn, you guys are so sensitive. My point was that if he had to Peart could be replaced, and now it's been proven. Hawkins did a stellar job making Rush sound like they did in the 70's and 80's. Would I want to see Peart replaced? No. Will it ever happen? No. But we have just witnessed that Rush sounds fantastic and fresh and vibrant with a young punk drummer. that was eye opening to me.

I don't ask for any of you to defend or listen to anything I have to say here, so think of me what you will, and respond accordingly.

But I'll be damned if I'm not going to be allowed to express my opinion, as unpopular as it may be.

And Rocinante, once again, opinions are opinions. Into the Wild, to me, was a horrific adaptation of the book. Hirsch was laughable in his part and the script was terrible. But, to be fair, if you read my post, I did say the soundtrack was amazing.
#27 - Posted 3/23/08 @12:33PM by The Professor [contact]

Quality is worse, but it includes the drum solo and "introduction":

link
#28 - Posted 3/23/08 @12:37PM by Toronto Writer [contact]

Here are two more vids of YYZ that I found on YouTube. The first one includes Taylor's drum solo and all of YYZ (including Dave's intro and Outro). The video is pretty terrible as it looks like it was shot from the last row opposite the stage but the audio is great. The second one is much, much closer to the stage, but quite short. Either way, they're cool.

One song played with Geddy and Alex with a different drummer does not mean that Peart could be replaced.
How about the lyrical imput from Neil. And YYZ was probably the best song of the entire concert. And the Foo's drummer didn't write the drum part, he just played it. I doubt that he could EVER come up with anything close to that. How does this mean that Neil could be replaced?
#32 - Posted 3/23/08 @1:34PM by Toronto Writer [contact]

#30 Yx2Z -

Maybe the Northern Pikes will show up.
#33 - Posted 3/23/08 @1:36PM by primemover_3 [contact]

Oh, and Ed, Dave introduced them as, " Geddy Lee and Alex Fuckin' Goddamn Lifeson", which would give Alex 2 middle names we didn't know of!!

New trivia question, perhaps!!! :)

......You lucky Torontoians! :)

What would I have given to be there!

...Yep, I would have to give the right one! :) lol

Peace, and happy Presto Bunny Day, all!
#34 - Posted 3/23/08 @3:43PM by Hakky [contact]

He could be replaced.
We dont suggest he should be, but has anyone heard Mike Mangini on the Working Man cover album? Or Mangini at all? Let alone Virgil Donati? etc....

Neil is Neil, and he is the pillar of RUSH but there are others who can pull that weight, Sisyphus and all.

I defend Manny a bit, because I've been to stinking restaurants where everything was perfect, but a cold draft at my feet the whole time --very discomforting. It seems to me Manny has high standards thats all.

We all love RUSH, and the FF tribute was a cross-marketing, amical wonder. Cool to see.

All I want to do is Shave My Fuckin' head; but, noone will help me.

This is something I cannot do alone, but it IS something I've considered for many, many years.

Today I have no hair -from the tip of my nose to the top of my head- and I wear an artiste's cap to conceal this abomination from the masses; for once upon a time, I had niether the wish nor the inclination to blind the innocent with the inevitable reflections that result from my head's exposure to the blinding bright rays of the sun.

My hair is long -that which remains; and, many who so happen to cross my path gaze in wonder upon my scalp, joke amonst themselves, point, and call me 'Forehead' behind my back. Only my TRUE FANS have have the audacity to call me 'Forehead' to my face.

And when they do, I retort: "You have an uncanny ability of noting the obvious; but please allow me to correct you: Were you to measure my hairlessness by the span of your hand(s), you would discover I am not 'FOUR-HEAD' (nor am I against head);but, rather, I am: 'NINE-HEAD'... ...Get it right!"

And I turn and walk away; because, in all reality, they (my TRUE FANS) don't really know me at all. They only know that which I allow them to know.

And now, if only some other would be so kind as to lend me thier assistance, I would so choose to become 'ALL-HEAD,' and expose myself to the masses with neither care nor concern for those who might happen to be blinded by the light.

Maestro,

I did the same thing last summer. Too many open patches up there! According to my wife the "new look" made me look younger. But she might be biased!

Happy to report I scored front row seats to the Portland, Oregon show. A first! Close to Alex, whom my wife loves. I will have to tackle her if she does something crazy.
#38 - Posted 3/23/08 @4:26PM by Gattaca [contact]

Yes is touring without Rick Wakeman. He states due to health concerns for himself and other members of the band. It seems Jon Anderson had a rough time last tour. A thoughtful statement by Rick was posted on his site. link

Rick's son Oliver, will replace him on keyboards.
#39 - Posted 3/23/08 @4:36PM by maestro [contact]

Thank you for the Yes info, Gattaca. Too bad about Rick; among the greatest keyboardist, ya know.

Maestro takes a long sweeping bow to Denny...
Hoping others get the gist.

Hey Manny, Thanks for posting this. Now we can all definitely never take anything you say even remotely seriously again.

The Hawkins kid did a good job but not even close to the master.

RIP Manny
#43 - Posted 3/23/08 @6:06PM by Fiat

Wow, I just have to take a moment to again make a post about what a complete idiot Manny has finally and irretrievably made of himself.

"Well, we now know that Peart indeed could be replaced."

This is so dumb it's almost adorable. What a buffoon.
#44 - Posted 3/23/08 @6:21PM by Rob [contact]

Very uncool to say Manny.
Rush plays the tempo just like the studio version now.
Watch the GUP video....YYZ is played fast and it sounds like shit.
NO ONE can be replaced in Rush----------PERIOD

All Taylor Hawkins did was show he was a competent drummer...which everyone already knew

If you want to continue bashing Peart....please go to a dream theater site.....unbelievable
#45 - Posted 3/23/08 @6:26PM by dedlift [contact]

I've laid off this one, but here goes.

Rush without Peart just will not work. His style is too unique. I equate same with several incarnations of other groups that in my opinion were close, but no cigar. Never as good as the original.

ACDC without Bon Scott
Zeppelin without John Bonham
Van Halen without DLR.
Yes without Jon Anderson. (although Drama was pretty good)

I think the world of Mike Portnoy...some of you may have heard his side project of Rush tunes...Cynus & the Sea Monters. I've seen him live. As good as Portnoy is, he lacks the power and depth that Peart possesses.
link
Of the Rush tunes Portnoy plays, they are interesting, certainly the drumming is good. But no way this guy comes close to Peart. And no way Foo Fighter's drummer does either.
There is a certain "x" factor with Peart that others will never be able to duplicate. They can interpret the music, but since they did not create it, their playing seems more mechanical to me than that of Der Trommler.
Finally, to be honest, Peart would not sound as good as Portnoy performing Dream Theater music. Or with any other band.
#46 - Posted 3/23/08 @6:33PM by Amanda G [contact]

"They had to have pre-rehearsed that. It came off way to cleanly."

They did rehearse it at the sound check, because Grohl mentioned it after they left, and went on talking about how he was crying "man tears" for a while when Lee/Lifeson were rehearsing with Hawkins, heh.
#47 - Posted 3/23/08 @7:39PM by Armeee [contact]

Manny,

This spring, buy a ticket to see the Sox at Fenway.
Wear a Yankee's cap and walk around the park saying "JETER is GOD".

It will have the same effect as you showing up at a RUSH concert saying that NP could be replaced.

Its hard to talk without any chicklets....... are you getting the point.
#48 - Posted 3/23/08 @7:56PM by unktehila

#47... holy sh*t, that's a funny comparison. ha!
#49 - Posted 3/23/08 @8:14PM by Bravest Face [contact]

Manny, you have to realize there is a difference between thinking something and saying something, take it from someone who has stuck his foot in his mouth a few times on here, just not recently. Once again, I don't have any gripe with your opinion, but it's a moot point because the question should be: would Rush ever replace Neil? and no, I think if Neil was the one to decide to call it quits, Rush would be no more.
#50 - Posted 3/23/08 @8:17PM by Lamb Saag [contact]

Last night, thousands of "Wooooo!" girls heard YYZ for the first time in their lives.
#51 - Posted 3/23/08 @8:22PM by unktehila

ha! yeah no kidding Lamb, the wOOo girls were probably like "who's those old guys on the stage? Is that Taylor's father playing guitar?"
Then again, it WAS Toronto, so i'm sure all the natives knew the legendary names once they were introduced by Grohl - which also was a very cool introduction to boot. awesome stuff.
#52 - Posted 3/23/08 @8:38PM by dedlift [contact]

# 47 Armeee;
"to the track....to the wall....it's gone!!!
touch'm all.
You hit a home run with that one. Good job.
#53 - Posted 3/23/08 @9:15PM by edgy [contact]

Man...when's the last time they played it THAT fast?!?!?
#54 - Posted 3/23/08 @9:43PM by drummerdad2112 [contact]

Although Manny has his "freedom of speech", i think those that have rallied to Neil's defense have done justfully so.

I can play yyz , natural science and xanadu just like many other drummers out there. we copy it, emulate it and wish we had the opportunity to play with Ged an Alex for an entire show, let alone a single song. but to try and replace someone like neil peart is just not humanly possible.

if this were indeed the case, then why not replace all three members with (oh let's just say...) the guys from the Foo Fighters, then we'd have Rush and Foo Rush Fighters.

each one of these guys wether it be from band "a" or band "b" have their own way of creating music. taking one person out of Rush and replacing them would make them a band similar to Yes or Dream theatre or King Crimson for that matter. nothing against the latter bands but when you change that much then you get cd's (albums for me , thanks, )like; Yes "tormato" Vs. Yes' "90125" both great in their own right but so different that they are not the same band. i'll say this to Manny and others that might think the same. if you've never played an instrument for a life time and have never tried to create, then you would never understand how following a band for their entire careers' has an effect on one's soul.

take out one piece and I am no longer buying that record., and i think the boy's know a realize that just the same.

just two pennies worth, thanks,

Happy Easter

Whoa....................................!
Hey.....................................!
Calm down REAL Rush fans................!

What the hell happen since this morning?? You mean to tell me that while I was at the family Easter gathering hanging out with my wife, my three little girls, hiding Easter Eggs, eating ham, turkey, deviled eggs and other festive culinary delights that you all were Manny bashing? Oh my goodness how could you do such a thing on such a wonderful day? All the dude did was give his OPINION. So what, if he thinks Neil sucks. So what, if he doesn't like the set list he will sit this one out. So what if he thinks Taylor Hawkins plays YYZ better.

Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez...

I would like to share a short poem with you all to kinda put things back into perspective:

There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with Manny
For the Rush fans have all spoken
what a dipshit he can be.....................

Can you hear the accoustical after that verse??
Thats enchantment Rush peoples...............

Once again TW thank you for the post!! Holy sh**t man you know Rush fans in Toronto were lovin life at that moment. There is no way that I would have been able to hold the camera for that footage. You would have heard the music in the background and the camera would have filmed a blurr of air drums, air cymbals, air bass and air guitar! Oh for the love of God, grow up people...

It is laughably absurd that there was a p&ssing contest on this blog about wether Neil Peart can be "replaced" due to this performance.

Everyone involved should be equally embarresed. You guys sound rediculous.

Having said that - this is a very cool video and what a great treat for both the audience and the members of the Foo Fighters!

I have to weigh in here-and this may start a shit storm-like I care-but there is one drummer right now that I'd wager Neil himself would pick to do it and could do it. Gavin Harrison Of Porcupine Tree.
Lyrically, NOBODY can replace Neil.
Realistically, this is not something we'll ever have to worry about...

Gavin Harrison is a brilliant drummer, just incredible... the next level, an amazing musician.
But i'm not even thinking/talking about replacing a member of Rush, they would not be Rush anymore with any integral part of the machine missing, period.

I'm just wondering if Rush will be getting some good press out this "Jam". I'm hoping that ET Canada or E Talk Now will have something on this, since the Foos are "Hot" right now.

The GOOD NEWS FIRST-Rush fans rock. Plain and Simple. Now let's CUT TO THE CHASE shall we?? I think that we should all FACE UP to the fact that some folks on this blog are DRIVEN by forces that are uncomprehensible. Thats THE WAY THE WIND BLOWS on thier side of the spectrum and under the CIRCUMSTANCES, there is not a damn thing we can do about it. Regardless of the reality, this is HOW IT IS and is a FAR CRY from how many of us feel about Rush's harmony, tranquility, , depth, unity and CHEMISTRY. If you take ANY of the band members away from the LIMELIGHT, there is no Rush. No way, no how. I THINK I'M GOING BALD just thinking about it!! I will go out on a limb to say that if that scenario happened, it would leave SCARS on a Rush fan for life. Yes, in the 35+ year MARATHON of Rush there are times we indeed wished they had pulled some DIFFERENT STRINGS but that was thier MISSION at that point in time. I will hesitate to mention names however maybe the folks in question are just LOSING IT or possibly just NEED SOME LOVE. If they get a little CLOSER TO THE HEART maybe they will reach that PEACEABLE KINGDOM that gives you tingles and twinges everytime you hit the play button. Personally, I love to see fans put on thier BRAVEST FACE and stand up for what they believe in..

I really couldn't RESIST this posting. The COUNTDOWN to the greatest band in the world's round 2 rip session has started. Are we stoked? You BET YOUR LIFE we are.......

Congrats Manny boy!!! u did it once again, yeah let's have Rush turn into another VH, they should do a reality show on that band, i know these were tragic things and i mean no disrespect but how did things work out for LZ, and he has the same DNA, and Metallic, just never was the same after that tragedy, they made alot of $$$, but there music wasn't close to what it was..... i won't fall into your bs anymore and hopefully no one else will....just try not to get any of it on your computer, use a sock or something.......

now on to better things.....just a hunch, but after listening to all the different vids of yyz at the foo show i noticed a difference in Big AL's solo at the end, i know he's not hooked into his regular gear and they didn't have their usual effects but this made me think that we may hear a few songs played slightly different this time around....i know there have been slightly different versions of songs from tour to tour, but i think we may get something different this time around........and hopefully acoustic Different Strings fo Mr. Crane.......3 weeks until I will be jammin with RUSH!!!!..YEAH BABY!!!!

#50 ~ Lamb, that got me flmfao!

#68 Fiat, I agree with you!

But, just my two cents here. There seems to be a poster in here that comes and goes. When he comes in, its always about shifting NP's age and how Neil has slowed down over the years, then he departs as he laughs at us.

The other thing is... I wonder if this poster debates that Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa ever slowed down before their passings. Had Bonzo still been alive today, would there be a debate of his tempos or fills being sluggish?

So, I'll leave the subject with this... Manny, how old are you and how long have you been playing? (trust me.. it leads to a very simple point)

Todays lucky #'s are 18 till the tour and 68 till the Gorge!
#79 - Posted 3/24/08 @1:08PM by Boss Hogg

It's nice to see a return of single-headed concert toms. After seeing Genesis in fall 2007, they can sound amazing live. Great job Mr. Hawkins!
#80 - Posted 3/24/08 @2:20PM by Promark747 [contact]

Getting back to the original thread---that is EXTREMELY rare that Alex and Geddy agreed to do this! Wow. I remember reading somewhere where Neil was late for a soundcheck during thr RTB tour, and Tim Alexander (Primus) filled in and they actually played RTB. Then Neil walked in seeing Tim playing his set. Tim said he was so excited to be able to do that (of course Neil didnt care as they are really good friends). For Taylor, it had to be a dream come true. I know he played with the guys from Queen (his fav band), but this is something I would have NEVER thought would happen....for any drummer!
#81 - Posted 3/24/08 @2:38PM by SF in Prague [contact]

i love being surprised!!
#82 - Posted 3/24/08 @3:03PM by Manny [contact]

Jeez, one little sentence in my post and it leads to all this.

If anybody had bothered to read my follow up, I clearly write will NP be replaced? No. Would I want to see it happen? No again.

I was half-joking when I wrote that now we know NP can be replaced people. Lighten up!

But, I will stand by my conviction that Hawkins made YYZ sound extremely fresh and vital, despite the flubs here and there. It had fire, and the temp was perfect.

I think my overall point is that NP just doesn't have it in him anymore to really shine on a few of the older songs. Now, he kicks ass on Natural Science and Subdivisions, so I don't know why he makes Limelight and Tom Sawyer sound so dead. Maybe he's as sick as playing those songs as I am hearing them (live)? Who knows?

But damn, the level of invictive is intense over here. One comment, and I come back today and people are ranting about stuff I wrote not only yesterday, but last week and in some cases months ago.

Ok, I'm going to make all of you happy now...here I go....

I think Rush should play 4 hour sets of nothing but their greatest hits. Play Limelight 3 times a show. Play Tom Sawyer four times. Geddy, bring out an ice cream truck in addition to the rotiserries because I find it so funny and the joke hasn't worn out. And Alex, put out an album of just your rants. They are funnier than any Richard Pryor album or Eddie Murphy album I own.

Ok, happy now? I've come around to see things your way.

Just watched the YYZ video.

Hope Big Al remembers the chords for the second leg of the tour, because if he plays like he did last night all the purists in here will be cringing.

Oh, and Hawkins didn't play NP's masterpiece anything LIKE it get plays by NP; too fast and too many missing fills.

#90 - Posted 3/24/08 @4:50PM by AFarCryfromFBN [contact]

... Once again, I don't have any gripe with your opinion, but it's a moot point because the question should be: would Rush ever replace Neil? and no, I think if Neil was the one to decide to call it quits, Rush would be no more.

#49 - Posted 3/23/08 @8:14PM by Bravest Face [contact]

We all saw the answer to that question when Neil lost his Wife and Daughter. Alex and Geddy did a solo project each, but.......

THEY DID NOT EVEN LOOK for a replacement for Neil. They were content to call it quits for Rush if Neil was gone.

Manny...I have a $100 bill in my pocket that says YOU could play any of a number of songs with Geddy adn Alex and "make it sound fresh and vibrant" with a quicker tempo. But, do you honestly think you (or anyone else) could:

Compose,
Write Lyrics,
Provide the same (sometimes) dry wit,
Maintain the pace with a 3 1/2 hour show,

Neil does all these things. So do Geddy and Alex even though it has been a while since they wrote any lyrics. The thing is that they do them together and in this case the WHOLE really is MUCH MORE than the sum of the parts.

Here is something to think about...Would you walk into a bar and tell the biggest dude there that his chick was the ugliest buck-toothed bitch you have ever seen (even if that is your true honest opinion)?

You get the same effect here if you badmouth any of the three of OUR boys.
#91 - Posted 3/24/08 @4:55PM by Liverpool.78

Very succinct AFarc...

do you think that Manny is one of those people who does not 'get' Rush? :-)

Liver.
#92 - Posted 3/24/08 @5:12PM by AFarCryfromFBN [contact]

Hi Liver!

I think he "gets" Rush, but I don't think he "gets" the importance of each individual to the group as a whole.
#93 - Posted 3/24/08 @5:33PM by Lamb Saag [contact]

I love seeing these YouTube videos: Alex has finally nailed the Johnny Cash look.

P.S. - Lance, what album is ANY on? ;-)
#94 - Posted 3/24/08 @5:38PM by Liverpool.78

Re #92 - Afarc... I don't think that you can consider 'Rush' in terms of individuals.

Their individual works and influences are all so different.

With Lennon and McCartney you can listen to their individual work and hear what they brought to The Beatles, but not so with AL GL or NP.

Rush is an entity that exists as a single organism. When one of them is no more then Rush will be no more, but this is a looooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggg time away yet, isn't it Manny?

Liver.
#95 - Posted 3/24/08 @5:40PM by LanceTheShred [contact]

Great observation Lamb!!

I was just putting emphasis on the word. ANY was a powerful word when it came to that statement. LOL-I knew someone would bring that up!
#96 - Posted 3/24/08 @6:03PM by Rob [contact]

Everyone..including Manny is entitled to their opinions. Sometimes I agree with him, other times I haven't. But when you continually bash one member of the band on a FAN website.....what the hell do you expect?
Manny continually makes subtle bashes against Peart, then when he gets called on it he says......well I really didn't mean it!.......until the next time it happens.
#97 - Posted 3/24/08 @6:37PM by Fiat

Manny, you are a self-important bore, and please don't be such a bore as to contradict me in this.
#98 - Posted 3/24/08 @6:46PM by D-Slam

I love Gavin Harrison, but I don't think he could replace Peart (nor do I think Peart could replace Gavin Harrison). They're *different*. Tim Alexander would be closer, but still no cigar IMHO.

There are probably at least 1000 drummers in the world who have the chops and stamina to pull off a close facsimile of a Rush performance, but that's all it would be... a facsimile. The physicality and precision that Peart brings to the drums can't be duplicated by anyone.

Hawkins' performance was entertaining, for what it was. There were many, many subtleties of YYZ lost, however.
#99 - Posted 3/24/08 @7:21PM by RushJax [contact]

I've never heard such whining. Please drop the Neil can't/can be replaced talk. Just enjoy Rush for being Rush. I think we all know, if Neil, Geddy, OR Alex ever left, they wouldn't be replaced. Heck, there's a greater chance of Queen finding a permanent replacement of Freddie Mercury than that happening (and no, that doesn't include Paul Rogers).

Anyway, Taylor did great, Alex sounds great I don't care WHAT Rush purists are grimmacing at, and Neil still has a job.

At this point, I wouldn't care if the boys got up there and armpit farted YYZ, it's just great they're still around for us to enjoy.

My rant is done.

I been a fan of the Foo Fighters since their beginning, and now that I know they are die-hard Rush fans, I like them even more.

I've always admired the Foo Fighters for their great appreciation for all of the great music that came before them.

Taylor did a great job...and I've only seen him smile like that once before, and that was when he played with Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen.

Must have been a dream come true for him...congrats!

I would've shit myself if I saw that! I saw the Foo Fighters in Minneapolis, good show by the way. But to get to witness that...wow! Taylor Hawkins is a great drummer, he's not Neil but he's good. Even Neil said himself in his book "Roadshow" as he commented on Hawkins and the Foo Fighters "Great drummer, Great band" Dave Grohl is a guy who appreciates all types of rock music and for him to actually get Geddy and Alex to this is, is huge! I wonder what Neil thought?
#103 - Posted 3/24/08 @9:30PM by dinoman [contact]

You know, I hate to do this, but I have to say that Manny has a good point. That video proves, without a doubt, that Neil could be replaced. Of course, the new version of the band would be limited to shows where all they play is YYZ, but still....

Perhaps ticket prices would be cheaper.

Would they still make a DVD every tour?
#104 - Posted 3/24/08 @9:36PM by Rob [contact]

#102 Neil thought.....Oh shit!! I'm fired now..better go sell tractor parts again.

re #99

Funny you should mention it: here's a video clip of someone armpit-farting YYZ!!

link
#106 - Posted 3/24/08 @9:55PM by Lamb Saag [contact]

And also, by the way, there are bound to be a lot of changes to the upcoming setlist, because I've been noticing a lot of people commenting along the lines of "... I don't care if they play (-blank-), it's a RUSH concert!"

So here are some songs people would not mind hearing Rush play:

Mary Had A Little Lamb
Song Song Blue
Yankee Doodle Dandy
and now, armpit-farting YYZ!
#107 - Posted 3/24/08 @9:58PM by Mark In CTown [contact]

To me, Neil can never be replaced. But if the unfortunate were to happen to him, Taylor Hawkins is my pick as his replacement. That dude can flat out play! I remember when One By One came out, Dave Grohl had mentioned to the press that the album was Taylor's "2112". So obviously Neil is a huge influence on Taylor. And to be able to fill his shoes with Alex and Geddy playing with him, had to be unreal. I loved how he leaps out of his drum kit and bear hugs Geddy. That is pretty sweet stuff.
#108 - Posted 3/24/08 @10:20PM by The Clansman 2112 [contact]

I'm a regular on Brian May's web site and I sent an email to him about Taylor's performance with Geddy and Alex.

I told Brian that it's like when the Foos play London, they have to jam with Queen but when the Foos on in Toronto, they have to jam with the hometown heroes, Rush!!!
#109 - Posted 3/24/08 @10:30PM by LanceTheShred [contact]

Just for the record and to put this inevitable shitiness to rest for now, I love this power statement:

Hey Manny, I respect your opinion, your thoughtful insight, your well stated opinions, and your inciteful observations. NOT! You're pathetic rant in #82 tells me that you are truly a loser. Move on blog boy! We have sufficiently flogged you. Go find another band that has been around since the early "70's" to bash. Oh yeah, which show(s) do you plan on attending this spring/summer? I'd like to meet you for a little stimulating conversation...
#111 - Posted 3/25/08 @1:37AM by soozm32 [contact]

Awesome video!!!!! Imagine the excitement the fans felt to see two of the best!!
That drummer rocked!!
Anyone who talks of "replacements" is just being ridiculous and mean-spirited. Please, can someone of the magnitude of Neil be replaced at all?? (in the context of Rush)
Can any one of us actually be replaced and do the things we do?? (hint-- ask your friends and family that question) Ask yourself the same question concerning anyone who you cherish or care about in your life.
#112 - Posted 3/25/08 @8:11AM by eshine [contact]

*sigh* Manny - here's some more attention:

I know you have already had your ass handed to you on this thread - but I need to chime in.

YYZ sounds fun here - it' too little fast, sloppy in a good way- and the boys did a nice job playing down to Hawkins while getting in a little practice and giving the Foo Fighters and their fans the thrill of a lifetime.

It's all a fun gesture - but nothing more. To suggest that this is some sort of "rebirth" of YYZ is utterly laughable - and I suspect you are not as dumb as you sound and are fishing for a little attention. Fine.

In any event - Neil, on his worst day, wipes his ass with this kid.

And we all wipe our ass with your silliness :)
#113 - Posted 3/25/08 @9:32AM by SnowDoggy [contact]

I hate to even mention the name because I hate it so much, but I wonder if the liberal rag Rolling Stone with mention this?

They are famous for noting when big acts bring out surprise guests, even going so far to mention when Jay-Z came on stage with Phish to play "99 Problems" and "Big Pimpin'" in 2004.

That one plug could generate some much needed buzz and help the "sluggish"(RushSpeak for Terrible) ticket sales.
#114 - Posted 3/26/08 @9:12AM by D-Slam

Perhaps Alex and Geddy could put together a "Burning for Neil" album, where they could have a bunch of guest drummers each play a Rush song.

Oh, wait a minute, Peart's not actually dead yet and is playing as well as ever. Never mind.
#115 - Posted 3/26/08 @9:37AM by scottc [contact]

great pics. I love how stoked Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins look and then there's Nate Mendel, cant tell if its pissed because Geddy's in his territory or he doesn't care
#116 - Posted 3/26/08 @5:30PM by Rob [contact]

#114 I like your idea, but perhaps it should be called "Pissed at Peart" Geddy and Alex could invite a bunch of different drummers....then these guys could show how much better they could play Rush songs than Neil!
#117 - Posted 3/26/08 @7:37PM by Fiat

"But we have just witnessed that Rush sounds fantastic and fresh and vibrant with a young punk drummer. that was eye opening to me. "

How about this part, folks? This gets my full force Joker laugh. "Eye opening" -- AHHAHAHHAHHHHHHAHAHHHAHHAHHHAHHAHAHAHH!
#118 - Posted 3/27/08 @10:30AM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

according to some people in this blog, neil is a washed up,has been rock drummer who can get outplayed by a young punk drummer!! i thought that was great that foo fighters showed that much respect to rush and it was real fun seeing them play with alex and geddy, but please!!! it was not even close to the performance they give with neil behind the kit!! they were just jammin, having fun!!there have been alot of great drummers over the years, but i truly believe neil is the greatest rock drummer of all-time and is still learning and improving!! it is pretty common thing for me to talk to someone who isnt a rush fan, doesnt even know much about geddy or alex, but they sure have heard of neil peart and what a great drummer he is!! in my 43 yrs on this planet,i have never heard anyone diss neil for his drumming, that is until i started reading recent posts from some people on this site!! pretty ironic,eh? pretty shocking to me,actually!! neil peart is the greatest ROCK drummer of his time, not to mention one of the great lyricist!! there is no argument,as far as i'm concerned!!

#120 - Posted 3/28/08 @5:25PM by Count Floyd [contact]

yo folks, this is amazing, and i'm blown away...

1. The Foo Fighters as so egoless and are so downright ballsy to let that happen within on of their shows... an ENTIRE song?! from two thirds of one of the first groups that come to mind that you might not want to play 'next to' on the same stage the same evening rock bill etc... well done in their sel-confidence and in their gift to the obviously elated drummer, who did great!

2. It is more than unsettling to see Geddy and Alex really 'play' a full number together in that 3-piece setting... and a Rush song at that!! my goodness i feel a tad queezy, but i completely love they chose to do it and that they had great fun hopefully... how surreal it must have been for them to see an absolutely 'different' crowd and theirby stunned-->confused-->wow let's rock!! reactions... and cheers to Neil for not being too-too sensitive! ; )

3. Alex totally did that different chording on purpose... maybe as an omage to the different setting... maybe as a sour note turned sweet, but no way was that a complete 'mistake'... imho

4. No Neil, no Rush. You heard it here last... lol

But don't hold your breath if you expect Alex and Geddy to ever stop playing together; i bet they will for life, and that is a beautiful thing. I also fully assume they would continue to seek out the energy of the live crowd, as long as it befits their ages, for it has been so integral to their desires as musicians. And surely, if this was so, and Neil really did say "No more." they of course would be privy to play a few/many Rush standards, with whatever amazing drum flogging human they chose. But these are only truths in theory, where we all hope they stay, securely tucked on the edge of dream and nightmare.

save for fuzzy-headed nights, where i swore i saw these strange clips on YouTube!

(let's all click our heels three times and go home now...)
#121 - Posted 4/29/08 @3:12PM by veintiunodoce [contact]

I jut watched the FF&Rush video, it was awesome. Hands down for Taylor Hawkins, I liked the end of the song when he jumps down from the drumkit and gets a hug from Geddy as any other Rush fan will do... playing with this two monsters is a dream come true for any drummer.
#122 - Posted 9/19/08 @1:17PM by dinglenutz [contact]

Neil is replaceable...LOL...firstly Whos going to write the lyrics, and secondly whos going to play drums.

I think we all should stop this nonesense of saying Peart is washed up or Peart is God or Peart is replaceable and any other garbage that spews forth. I think we should all appreciate what Peart has done for the music and drum industry. Also the man has been through tragedy, i think we owe him the respect he deserves and we should all be thankful that he even bothers to play after what he went through, as most people would've shrivelled up into a husk of nothing.
Smarten up people
