Adventures of Power; Neil Peart's live-action film debut
Posted at 12:00PM | comments (61)

Adventures of PowerUPDATE - 2/6@3:30PM: I can't believe I'd missed this before, but there's a trailer for the film up on YouTube (thanks dinoman).

UPDATE - 2/5@1:11PM: LanceTheShred notes in the comments that Ari Gold (using his Power persona) competed in a competitive air guitar competition two years ago in Minneapolis. He was the only guy in US air guitar competition history to be disqualified for playing air drums instead of air guitar. He unexpectedly played 1 minute of Tom Sawyer and the crowd loved it. Here's the video.

Adventures of Power is a new indie film written by, directed by and starring Ari Gold (not to be confused with the Entourage character of the same name) which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival a couple of weeks ago. I first heard of the film late last year when I was made aware of its internet movie database entry, which listed Neil Peart among the cast of characters playing himself in the film. Needless to say I was intrigued and dug up what I could about the film online. Writer/director Ari Gold is best known for his student-Oscar-winning 2000 short film Helicopter and has made several other short films in addition to acting in many indie flicks. Adventures of Power is his first stab at directing a full-length film. I recently managed to get a screening of the movie and was completely blown away. If you are a Rush fan and especially if you are a drummer, you will love this movie (I think Lance The Shred will particularly enjoy it). It is chock full of Rush references and yes ... a cameo from Neil Peart; his first speaking role in a live-action film.

Adventures of Power is a quirky, unconventional movie in the tradition of Napolean Dynamite (picture Napolean Dynamite meets Footloose meets Rocky) which only takes itself half-seriously most of the time but is also surprisingly touching at times. I'll attempt to summarize it while keeping a straight face; believe me - a difficult thing to do ... this movie is hilarious. It follows Power (played by Ari Gold), a nerdy copper miner from Lode, New Mexico who has a passion for drumming. He became hooked on the drums after hearing Tom Sawyer on the radio after his mother's funeral when he was a boy. The problem is that his father never allowed him to learn to play the drums - so he instead air-drums. Power lives in his hippie Aunt's (played by Jane Lynch) basement, which he has transformed into a shrine to Rush and Neil Peart (his hero). The highlight of his week is displaying his air-drumming prowess on talent night at his aunt's bar. Unfortunately nobody in his small town seems to appreciate his skill except for a local boy who Power has taken under his wing after the boy's father died. After the miners - led by Power's father (played by Michael McKean) - go on strike Power heads to Mexico to participate in an air-drum-off. While there he nearly dies attempting to air-drum Tom Sawyer and is spotted by an air-drum trainer (played by Steven Williams) from New Jersey who asks him to come to Newark to train with his air-drum team. The rest of the film chronicles Power's adventures getting to Newark and training for the ultimate air-drumming competition. Also starring in the film is Adrian Grenier as Power's rival and a sort of quasi-villain, and Shoshannah Stern as Power's love interest. I won't reveal the details of Neil Peart's cameo so as to not spoil anything, but he shows up towards the end of the film and says a couple of lines.

Since the film just debuted, it's too early to know where or when it will be shown in theaters. But there is a rudimentary website up where you can sign up for a mailing list, and a MySpace page has been created as well. You can also check out this great review from Quint at Ain't It Cool News and this Sundance interview (which I've also included below) with stars Ari Gold, Adrian Grenier and Shoshannah Stern. The interview also includes a few clips from the film. This is definitely a movie that Rush fans will enjoy.

Woohooo! 1st!
(apparently I need to find other things to do)

The movie sounds great. hope I get a chance to see it.
#3 - Posted 2/5/08 @12:21PM by unktehila [contact]

ha! this movie sounds awesome... i can't wait to see it... what a wierd, original, hilarious premise. i'm a drummer and i'm sure i'll be completely riveted and entertained throughout.
Neil's cult status just keeps growing and growing.
#4 - Posted 2/5/08 @12:28PM by RobJ_ [contact]

Given that Neil raised the dead in his last movie role I can't wait to see if he can one-up it this time!

Go Neil!
#5 - Posted 2/5/08 @12:33PM by Lamb Saag [contact]

You mean: he heard the JAZZ version of Tom Sawyer on the radio? (ha ha)
#6 - Posted 2/5/08 @12:41PM by towhee [contact]

OK, a bit off the current subject, but if anyone is trying the presale for Boise this AM, keep trying. For 20 min, I could get NOTHING in the good sections. Next thing you know, I was offered 7th row in the lower seats. Refused (with a bit of anxiety) but was rewarded with FRONT row, section A4 (lower seats). Exactly what I wanted.
Now I'll hope for as good of luck with the Gorge in 20 min. One can dream, right? Good luck to everyone else!
#7 - Posted 2/5/08 @12:43PM by Sean [contact]

I will see it if it goes to theaters but with films out there these days it might go straight to DVD. Who knows? Could be a big hit as well.

The REAL question I would like an answer to is...why are there OVER 3,000 seats left for Rush at Nokia in LA? The place only seats 7,400. What is happening in these markets where tons of tickets are available?

No demand?
#8 - Posted 2/5/08 @1:04PM by LanceTheShred [contact]

This will be an interesting movie. As some of you know, I am currently the DC Regional air guitar champion and have been involved in competitive air guitar since 2003. I appear in Air Guitar Nation, a movie similar to this one that was directed by Magic Elves and Alexandra Lipsitz. This air movie received nothing but extraordinary reviews including a few awards at the local film festivals. Air Guitar Nation was about the first year that competitive air guitar came out for the US. Finland had a World Air Guitar Competition that was already going 7 years prior. Anyway to make a long story short, the US went on to win the world that year. The movie is a killer documentary leading to the world win.

The dude that directed this air drum movie, competed in a competitive air guitar competition two years ago in Minneapolis. He is the only guy in US air guitar competition history that was disqualified for playing air drums instead of air guitar. He unexpectedly played 1 minute of Tom Sawyer and the crowd loved it.

link

Unfortunately for him, the rules clearly state no air drums! This will not appear in movie theaters. It will be at Film Festivals and probably out on DVD (Just like Air Guitar Nation) Anyway can't wait to see it and I have been seriously thinking of starting the World Air Drum Federation. We will see...................

This is going to be hilarious, the whole premise is great and of course Neil having a cameo makes it all the better.....

Now it's time to vent......ive been involved in the auction for the fort lauderdale show for the past week......all the while i was checking a few of the sites selling tickets and some had a couple of tickets scattered within the first few rows.......the auction bids were slowly creeping up everyday and today they went crazy.....row B $390, row C $290, row D $270, row E $260......u have to buy a minimum of 2 and up to 4.....i lost the auction, i was willing to pay $260 but i got shut out, my luck has been great lately.......the point here is that within an hour after the auction ended i checked back to some of these sites, and yes, you guessed it, all kinds of seats in the first 5 rows now........i dont even want to start listing the asking prices and make everyone even more disgusted at whats been going on with the ticket situation..........Rush is coming to play 10 blocks from my house and i still have NO tickets and i was even willing to dish out over $500 for me and my girlfriend to have great seats.......this is insane.......sorry for the crying, just really pissed and frustrated........

Sean!

Maybe people got scared away when the the music today presale was sold out. As I mentioned before, I hesitated to aggressively pursue tickets at Nokia because its a small venue. I got great seats for the Irvine show, which is great, but now I'll have to drive for days (I live in Silverlake, like 15 minutes from Nokia). I just checked the Nokia site, and there seem to be lots of great seats still available.

In the end, I feel it was a mistake to book that picnic shelter for the LA show. But what do I know?

#11 - Posted 2/5/08 @4:29PM by Sean [contact]

All I can say about Nokia is my friend purchased 4 tickets in the orchestra this morning and the lady at the box said "We expected this to sell out in minutes and we have an entire venue to sell still"

This is crazy. Those pre-sales are junk.
#12 - Posted 2/5/08 @5:09PM by unktehila [contact]

that video of Power is f#@*in awesome. i want to see that movie yesterday.

the presales are a joke... i hear you rocinate, i live 5 MINUTES from the venue they play in Mansfield (i can hear the music if the wind is right), and i've never scored very great seats there. showed up saturday for the regular sale there right when they openend... 5 people in line. first person got 4th row center, in 3 minutes i was up and it was like section 5, row Z. a joke. i split empty-handed.
#13 - Posted 2/5/08 @5:13PM by dinoman [contact]

And I wouldn't be suprised if that first person in line was employed by a ticket broker.
#14 - Posted 2/5/08 @5:17PM by dinoman [contact]

Sean (#11), but keep in mind that the "orchestra" at Nokia is the large seated section. They also have a "pit" which is what most places refer to as the orchestra.
#15 - Posted 2/5/08 @5:53PM by Michael Senyo [contact]

Amazing, no? The Hollywood Bowl is sold out (They didn't open up those lawn spaces up in Siberia for that show) this past summer, and now the report is Nokia isn't selling out. Looks like this presale thing is going to bite them in the ass a few times more not to mention the smaller venue.

My cover is forever blown.

Thought I was on the Britney Blog instead of RIAB. Shucks, how does one recover from this...?
#19 - Posted 2/5/08 @8:16PM by TestForEcho09

I got ...section 8 row n at post-gazette...anyone know if this is a decent venue?
#20 - Posted 2/5/08 @9:01PM by Michael Senyo [contact]

19#

Its not bad, no worse than any other outdoor venue. However, depending on where you live in western PA (?), it is considered "out in the boonies". A good drive from Pittsburgh, or anywhere beyond Beaver County.

ms in LA (born and raised in Erie)

hekeclit - I make no comments.....
#21 - Posted 2/5/08 @9:16PM by entrenous [contact]

is anyone waiting 'till the day b4 the show to buy their tickets? Last year rush played a "sold out" show at the ACC in toronto. the day of the concert just before i left the house i looked at ticketmaster and row 14 on the floor was avaible.

what is front row at the amway arena in flordia, row A or row AA?
#22 - Posted 2/6/08 @12:25PM by Spindrifter

The air drummer is a 'must see' for all future musicians or um, those that consider themselves 'artists of air-drumming' as this guy kicks ass!

Liked the little spin around fill he did!

Has the Bodz det. he used then tossed out to the audience found its way to ebay yet? Lol!

Hope that all are doing well!
#23 - Posted 2/6/08 @12:42PM by Spindrifter

Its a little too quiet in here!
#24 - Posted 2/6/08 @1:01PM by dinoman [contact]

Hey ya Spin. I'm checking the threads every now and again. It's been suspiciously quiet on this blog considering the upcoming tour and live album and all.
#25 - Posted 2/6/08 @1:13PM by Spindrifter

Hey Dino... Was about ready to exit stage left till I refreshed.

Yup, it certainly is too quiet in here.

U get tixs yet?

Someone that we know from Boston is flying out here for the Gorge show and she snagged up 2 tixs for me and my son on Als side, 7th row and 2 for her and her friend on Geds side, 9th row.

I am gonna go insanely crazy waiting till 5/31!!!! It'll be my 1st show that close to the stage since 84.
#26 - Posted 2/6/08 @1:40PM by dinoman [contact]

Did I ever! I thought I'd try out the Ticketmaster "premium seat auction" thing, and I scored 4th row floor (Geddy's side but only a couple of seats from the center isle) for a reasonable price (expensive, but reasonable considering what I'd have to pay a ticket broker) for the New Orleans show.

Sounds like you've got some great seats as well!

Congrats. i have a feeling these will be fantastic shows.
#27 - Posted 2/6/08 @1:53PM by Spindrifter

If Neil is up to the 2nd leg and still smiles about it, then its gonna be more than a fantastic show imo!
#28 - Posted 2/6/08 @2:13PM by dinoman [contact]

Well, my show will be the fifth one in, so hopefully the old man won't be too exhausted yet. Hell, they'll have just spent a week in Puerto Rico and Florida, in April even! What could be more relaxing than that?!?
#29 - Posted 2/6/08 @2:24PM by Spindrifter

Am off for a bit.

Wanted to get my thoughts and prayers out there to the twister victims and their families!

Hope that BF and all other RIABers are safe from harms way.
#30 - Posted 2/6/08 @3:37PM by Bravest Face

Spin, thanks for your kind words. Fortunately, we didn't get hit as hard as some areas, the storm was pretty bad last night but my power didn't even go it which was a surprise.

I have some advice to ask from all. I have decided not to fool with the presale for the Cincy show, I actually went on earlier just to see what was available and it was complete crap! I am debating between driving the 2 hours to the box office Saturday morning and going online and during the regular sale through Ticketmaster. I hate to drive that far and wait in line, but if my tickets are going to be a good deal better that way, it would definitely be worth it. What are some opinions on this, maybe from those of you who have done a combination of both in the past? I have never actually stood in line at the box office before so I am unsure if the tickets are that much better.

Thanks!
#31 - Posted 2/6/08 @3:47PM by dinoman [contact]

Hey all, here's a trailer link for "Adventures of Power", in case anyone is interested.

Glad to hear you are well BF. I don't have much advice about the tickets. I imagine if you are first in line, you have a good shot. But remember, if you have to wait in line long, others are scarfing up tickets the whole time. You could try for the TicketMaster premium seat auction. I see they have pit tickets in rows D & E. My advice there is to wait until the last minute to bid. Good luck with whatever you choose to do!
#32 - Posted 2/6/08 @3:48PM by Spindrifter

BF... Glad to hear that you and your fam are ok! Its a good thing you didnt lose your power.

Am not sure if you got my e. But, last year I thought that the presale was a waste of crap. So to speak! Lol! But, our good friend in Boston scored 2 7th row Als side and 2 Geds side in the 9th.

So, I have gathered a little faith back into the presale after yesterday.

Apparently, some that scored tixs yesterday for The Gorge will be checking out Ticketbastards on Sat to see what they can get. It sounds like a good idea, but, may be a wasted trip.

May the Rush gods be watching over you!
#33 - Posted 2/6/08 @4:23PM by unktehila [contact]

ohmigod!!! that trailer has me very excited... that shit looks like the best, decent, legit cast as well. i can't wait to see this flick.

Look for Rush references at the :35 (over his right shoulder) and 1:40 marks of the video.

spin--the presale tix for the gorge were nothing short of amazing. my friend went a little nuts and got a bunch hoping that some of us would decide to make the trek after all...

based on that information, i just might. i'll let you know.

snowdoggy--that certainly would be a fun setlist. "in the end" would be great... presto acoustic? an interesting concept... and i TOTALLY agree that they're going to bust out the fear series....
#37 - Posted 2/6/08 @5:47PM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

i doubt very seriously that they are going to change the setlist that drastically!! i think they will change 6 or seven tunes, tops!!!
#38 - Posted 2/6/08 @5:57PM by jediyyz [contact]

Bravest Face, my family did much better with the Musictoday presales than any method and we tried them all!! My wife was first in line in person when regular sales started for the ABQ show and was offered zero good seats!! I am still waiting to reveal my thoughts on the great 2008 ticket hunt...it won't be pretty...I'm just waiting for the proper thread and moment!!

----Any thoughts on that?
#40 - Posted 2/6/08 @6:28PM by unktehila [contact]

my biggest preference on any Rush setlist, the song i want to hear more than any others by far, is The Camera Eye.
#41 - Posted 2/6/08 @6:31PM by windycitygirl [contact]

britneys being stalked like oj on tmz dot com its crazy and very sad.
#42 - Posted 2/6/08 @6:32PM by windycitygirl [contact]

ok back to s&a--i wouldn't mind a few adds and surprises to the set list. if they kept it pretty much the same, thats cool. it flowed very well.
#43 - Posted 2/6/08 @9:15PM by Spindrifter

Jaytee, good to see you and that would be really kewl if you could make the trip!

Jed, how ya doing my friend? Am gonna wait with you on the proper thread and moment! Still cant believe that we have yet another leg of our beloved Mighty Trio!
#44 - Posted 2/6/08 @9:38PM by Bravest Face

Jedi, I can't imagine getting worse tickets than what I am being offered through the presale, I almost rather not go. I also agree that I probably won't fare much better going in person and making a two hour drive which both ways translates into four hours roundtrip. I think my best option is just go through Ticketmaster Saturday.

Nice to see many are already entering setlist predictions. I agree with Necro that I don't think the setlist will change that much, but I also wouldn't be surprised to see a few songs that we haven't seen them play in a while either.
#45 - Posted 2/6/08 @9:55PM by jediyyz [contact]

Good to hear from you Spin!!...Happy for you and the "friend from Boston"...wish I could go to The Gorge but the timing is not great!...Bravest, I realize the presale(Musictoday) is hit and miss, but we sincerely did pretty well...the key is persistance...I wish you all the luck in the world, God knows your neck of the woods deserve a little luck!
#46 - Posted 2/6/08 @10:26PM by Spindrifter

Jed... I was hoping that you and the family could work em angels this way. But, our 'friend from Boston' and I will toast you and the gang!

Btw, if they crank out RTB's I'll sing my ass off in honor of you and shout out RTB's sucks!!! Lol! Perhaps, I'll get a blow up doll floating around then.

BF, dont give up on the faith. The Rush gods will be good to you!
#47 - Posted 2/6/08 @10:43PM by dinoman [contact]

Anybody lurking?

Don't you miss the Pub sometimes? It's too bad it had to get spoiled by a few hooligans. And now were limited to 6 posts an hour.

Oh well, I guess this is meant to be a blog and not a chat.
#48 - Posted 2/6/08 @10:58PM by Spindrifter

Dino, is it 6 now. Lol! I was chatting my ass-a-roo off and had a door slam on my face. Ugh, WTF? I thought.

I do miss the pub everynow and then. But, (theres always a 'but') I dont miss the uncalled for rants and ranting that took place.

Am outta here for the night. Hope to catch ya tomorrow. Gotta go watch American Idol with hopes of finding Ged jr.

Have a good one!
#49 - Posted 2/6/08 @11:01PM by dinoman [contact]

You have a good one as well.
#50 - Posted 2/7/08 @10:17AM by SnowDoggy [contact]

If the first riff in PR is "Limelight" I am skipping this tour. I already caught the Rush Movie twice in 2007.

These guys are stubborn canadians, but that would just be terrible. How can they not be bored to tears after playing that identical set 48 times already?
#51 - Posted 2/7/08 @10:31AM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

they arent going to play the exact same set, they will probably change about 25%,which i believe would be around 6 or 7 songs!

snowdoggy-you arent going to this tour if they open with limelight again? thats one of the strangest things ive heard yet! lol
#52 - Posted 2/7/08 @10:37AM by Toronto Writer [contact]

#50 -

Are you implying that Canadians are stubborn? (In your statement above, I'm not sure the noun "Canadian" is necessary.) As a proud Canadian, I'll wait for your response before I let the world know whether I'm offended or not.
#53 - Posted 2/7/08 @10:39AM by test4eggroll [contact]

why dont these people just get a real set of drums?
#54 - Posted 2/7/08 @10:53AM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

# 50- its a great setlist!! this is the "snakes and arrows" tour,2008 leg!! they will tweak it,maybe swap a couple of the snakes tunes with a couple of tunes that they didnt play from snakes the first time! or they may swap a couple of the "classics" for other "classics" but to imply that they are "stubborn canadians" and play the same stuff over and over again just isnt accurate,in my opinion!applying the logic of "why wouldnt they get bored to tears after playing the identical set 48 times",why wouldnt they get bored playing all their old tunes for all these years? they love to play and perform for their fans and we should be happy that they added another leg to this tour!! if they do more than one leg of a tour, most bands dont drastically change their setlist, its the same tour, just a different leg is all!! next tour, they will have a totally new setlist i'm sure! in the mean time, lets just enjoy this additional leg!! i,for one, never get tired of hearing the intro to limelight and alex's solo, but maybe thats just me! lol
#55 - Posted 2/7/08 @11:22AM by SnowDoggy [contact]

didn't mean to fire anyone up - I just think that Rush will be playing to many of the same fans on this leg as the first leg. They must realize that. If all they do is tweak a song here and there this Rush Fan will be sitting it out.

Are they really going to play the Southpark Clip again? When we've all seen it already? And, God Forbid, is Geddy still going to run on stage holding that napkin?
#56 - Posted 2/7/08 @12:23PM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

lol,reasonable points snowdoggy!!
#57 - Posted 2/7/08 @12:39PM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

i understand alot of your points, snowdoggy!! i think that they will change about 6 or 7 songs and probably will change the opening and some of the video! just some people think that they will change over half the setlist, and i doubt it! not that i would mind that either, they can play whatever they want and it will be awesome!!
#58 - Posted 2/7/08 @8:25PM by prat2112 [contact]

#35 - Snow Doggy I thought I was the only one who liked Here Again. I would give anything to see it played live, in my opinion Alex plays one of the best guitar solos ever on that song.
#59 - Posted 2/7/08 @9:54PM by Lamb Saag [contact]

For those making setlist predictions, remember they have a live album coming out in April, "Snakes & Arrows LIVE". If they want to sell it, they gotta play it.

And this crytogram was too good too pass up:

SPUGEBAN - Enforced abstention between priests and their eunuchs during Lent.
#60 - Posted 2/8/08 @2:08PM by mommy_of_zuzu

#4 RobJ-

That was really funny!
#61 - Posted 3/18/08 @1:49AM by mattybro [contact]

When i first heard about this movie, I thought someone was taking the piss...SO glad it's real.

So, I need to vent a little frustration at the huge amount of posts regarding "I can't get good tickets boo hoo"
Be thankfull they play in your town , state or country...30 years and not once have they set foot on Australian soil!!!

I had to fly 23 hours to London to see them and it cost me thousands, $500 doesn't seem so bad 'eh?
