Updates and other random Rush stuff
Posted at 11:43AM | comments (35)

It's been a quiet post-holiday week for Rush news. There was finally an update on the DarkStar project and Richard Chycki posted in his blog about how he was working on the upcoming Rush live DVD... but that's about it.

This coming Thursday the 2007 Grammy Award nominees will be announced. Do you think Rush will be nominated? Take the poll and let us know. If Rush is nominated it'll most likely be for best instrumental or possibly best rock album/performance. Last week I asked you what your favorite Rush instrumental was. The overwhelming winner was La Villa Strangiato with 50% of the vote. In second was YYZ with 21% and rounding out the top 5 was The Main Monkey Business (13%), Leave That Thing Alone (5%) and Malignant Narcissism (5%).

After a 3-month hiatus, MitA has dug up a few more Rush oddities for our collective enjoyment. They include several short audio clips and a couple of goofy pictures. The first picture is of Neil wrapped in a scarf at his drumkit, and the other is a closeup of Alex's Angels from the Snakes & Arrows tour. You can access the audio clips directly via MitA's website or use the player below.

Thanks MitA!

The Rock Band video game - which features Rush's Tom Sawyer - was released last week to rave reviews. Unfortunately the version with the game is a cover. Reader pinkfloyd2000 pointed me to this video capture of Tom Sawyer from the game so you can hear how the cover version sounds. The song was also featured in a story on NPR from a couple of days ago where Carrie Brownstein - former guitarist for Sleater-Kinney - discusses her review of the game for slate.com (thanks to EvieJoy for the heads up).

Neil Peart is featured on the cover of the November/December issue of Dutch drum magazine Slagwerkkrant for their 25th Anniversary issue, which also includes an exclusive interview. Thanks to Power Windows for the heads up and the scan.

The December 2007 issue of the UK's Rhythm Magazine contains a 3-page review of the R30 drumkit, a 3-page drum transcript of Tom Sawyer and a separate booklet on drum layouts which has a center spread poster of Neil with the R30 kit. Thanks to Welshexile for the heads up.

Playboy magazine is running their annual music poll over at their website and unfortunately have excluded Rush from all of the categories. A travesty! They do have a spot for you to write-in your vote though. So head on over to Playboy's site and write in Rush and Snakes & Arrows. Thanks to John over at Cygnus-x1.net for the heads up.

The Counterparts message board is running a Name That Rush Tune charity drive for the 3rd year in a row. Just visit the Rush Games forum to play. How well do you know Rush's catalog? Can you name a Rush song from a one-second sound clip? Every Counterparts member is welcome to give it their best shot. When you play Name That Rush Tune, you're playing in the name of your favorite charity. Donations are being taken, and the final Name That Rush Tune champion will have everything donated in their name to the charity of their choosing! For more on the charity drive, go here.

I was recently contacted by reader Matthew C regarding a cause that many Rush fans may be interested in. Matthew represents an organization called SaveTheDDO.org. I'll let him explain what it's all about:

In the 1970's Tom Bolton, professor of astronomy from the University of Toronto, was doing research at a place called the David Dunlap Observatory north of Toronto. This is one of the oldest observatories in North America and at the time of its construction in 1935 it was the second largest in the world. While working at the Dunlap Prof. Bolton discovered the first observable scientific evidence of a black hole. The name of the star within which he made this discovery was called Cygnus X-1. Sound Familiar?

This discovery was the inspiration for the Rush song of the same name.

Recently, the University of Toronto decided to sell the Observatory property to the highest bidder and a number of people, Prof.Bolton among them, are working against the clock to have this historic landmark preserved. Basically, we need people to care and we need people to show it! ...

So if you're interested in saving the David Dunlap Observatory, visit SaveTheDDO.org.

Reader John H let me know that the new live DVD from Canadian rockers The Barenaked Ladies (Talk to the Hand: Live in Michigan) features guitarist/vocalist Ed Robertson wearing a custom Rush t-shirt. You can see it pretty well in the opening song of the DVD (One Week) which can be viewed at YouTube.

I came across a couple of old video interviews via krlowe over at The Rush Forum. The first is a short feature on Rush from MuchMusic back in the early 80s. It contains footage from the Permanent Waves era including an interview with Ray Daniels and a short clip of a Geddy Lee interview along with concert and video footage. You can check it out here. The second is a short soundcheck interview with Alex and Geddy on MuchMusic from the Toronto Rocks SARS benefit concert. It can be seen here.

And I'll end with a bit of news from the rumor mill. Please take this with a big grain of salt. :) One of my readers emailed me earlier this week to say that he spotted Snakes & Arrows producer Nick Raskulinecz coming out of customs on Monday at LAX. He approached Nick and told him how great he thought the album was. Nick graciously shook his hand and said thanks, wait 'til you hear the next one. He then offered up that he (Nick) would be producing the next album and that they were already working on it! I'm not really surprised that Nick would be working on the next album seeing that both parties have enthusiastically expressed interest in doing so in several interviews. What does surprise me - if true - is the fact that they're already working on it. This is the second such rumor to this effect that I've heard, so maybe it is true. If I had to speculate, I'd say that Alex and Geddy have been writing a bit between gigs and on breaks and probably have some rough cuts of a few songs that Nick is helping with. Again - this is a complete rumor at this point. I don't have any solid word on whether this is true or not. But ... if it is it's great news. Let the speculation begin! ;) Have a great weekend!

How sweet would a new album, live dvd and tour for 2008 be?
#2 - Posted 11/30/07 @12:09PM by 1-2-bucklemyshoe [contact]

Maybe they will preview some of their new songs on the 2008 leg of the tour. I believe they did a "pre-album" tour before Moving Pictures, where they played a few dates, I think it was Radio City Music Hall and some other places. In any case, I don't think the new album would come out until 2009, but you never know.

guess i'll have to force myself over to playboy's website :)

Rumours of a new album put a very big smile on my face.
#5 - Posted 11/30/07 @1:24PM by Scott T. [contact]

P.S. Thanks once again MitA, very neat clips, and I can't help but laugh at Neil wrapped in a scarf.

Thanks Ed, For More Rush Knowledge and Wisdom!
#7 - Posted 11/30/07 @2:59PM by Snowdog2112 [contact]

Already working on a new album? True or not, oh, what a juicy morsel for the salivating Rush masses to chew on. Thanks for the tidbit Ed!
#8 - Posted 11/30/07 @3:49PM by unktehila

"what till you hear the next one"...

oh my gOd.
#9 - Posted 11/30/07 @4:00PM by Geddicorn [contact]

After all the doomsday prophecies of this being their "farewell tour", I'll gladly grab on to any little glimmer of hope for a new project. Best news yet!!! Thanks Ed!
#10 - Posted 11/30/07 @4:07PM by jaytee578 [contact]

i stand by my opinion that they are way too future-oriented right now to be calling it quits. i'll believe the new album when i see it--but even if they haven't started working on it yet, i'm sure the idea is there. they were way too pumped after S & A.

regardless--another great update and lots to look forward to hopefully :)

GEDIILUV--are you kidding me?? those are my actual letters? ed is messing with my mind.
#11 - Posted 11/30/07 @4:44PM by AFarCryfromFBN [contact]

If Neil has been dabbling with some lyrics, they could very well play a new song in '08. They used to do it a good bit back in the 70's!
#12 - Posted 11/30/07 @6:04PM by Malnar [contact]

Cool MitA stuff as usual= thanks. Alex, even though it seems like you cause most "incidents", that's one of the reasons why you're the best! Rock Band singer is, um, prrety baad. And there was too much whammy bar- i don't care if it does get you more points. I'd be three tries into that song when my hands would premanently disfigure. BNL tshirt looks like a circa Hemispheres shot- nice. And Rush working already? The thought :D

Thankin ya Ed. So much news.. Still. Slagwerkkrant!
#13 - Posted 11/30/07 @6:15PM by pinkfloyd2000 [contact]

Next album to contain the 20+ minute epic "Cygnus X-1, Book III: Celestial Spheres."

;-)

Hey, I can dream.
#14 - Posted 11/30/07 @7:02PM by RicoRoq [contact]

I wonder if by "already working on it" they mean an EP of just a few new songs, like they did with Feedback before the R30 Tour?

Maybe the boys want some new stuff to play for the Spring Tour... you know, to help them get through it. Especially Neil.
#15 - Posted 11/30/07 @8:33PM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

barring any unforseen tragedy,i dont see why some people think they are going to call it quits!! every interview has indicated that they seem refreshed and seem ready to rock for quite sometime!!
#16 - Posted 11/30/07 @9:07PM by pinkfloyd2000 [contact]

Rico...perhaps. Let's just hope that "Feedback II" isn't in the offing. A nice idea, but Rush's release of a covers CD (IMO) kinda reeked of a washed-up classic rock band -- which, clearly, they are not. See Def Leppard & Queensryche for examples of bands that have also done so, but probably are.
#17 - Posted 11/30/07 @9:27PM by Tom [contact]

hmm nice if correct, however..

Chykci did such a great job on s&a and r30 that i don't think there's anyway they'd work without him - he's working on the new dvd according to reports.

they take touring seriously and would spend approx a month rehearsing for the dates in 2008 so basically...

there'd be very little time to record a new album now. i think if that comment is correct, then nick r has probably heard some rough demos of new songs for which he has some killer ideas.
#18 - Posted 11/30/07 @9:39PM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

yeah, they are probably just in the writing stages now,the boys have said in the past that some of the best writing is done on the road, just like the old days!!
#19 - Posted 11/30/07 @10:07PM by glortiz [contact]

More new music is really intriguing. Here's a twist.

What if, in the words of Geddy Lee, they had "waaaayyyy to many songs" to put on S&A. Write a couple more on the road, tune up what's left over and do it.

I know, Rush does not have unrecorded songs in the vault, but hey, we're just speculating. And hoping.....
#20 - Posted 11/30/07 @10:07PM by Nettie [contact]

new album, pass me the drool bucket joaneeee!
#21 - Posted 11/30/07 @10:52PM by Lamb Saag [contact]

MitA always has neat tidbits, and hearing Rush "trainwrecks" just makes me appreciate their live playing all the more!

If that were me up there on stage, trying to remember all the complicated music to play, I'd be fudging up all the time. (Kinda like that recurring nightmare I have...)
#22 - Posted 11/30/07 @10:57PM by Lamb Saag [contact]

re #10

jaytee578 got the best cryptogram I've ever seen, check it out!

Sooner or later we're gonna see ME-LERXST, or I-WEINRIB, even NEIL-DRUM
#23 - Posted 11/30/07 @11:08PM by Lamb Saag [contact]

Now THIS is weird...

Slagwerkkrant is what I served for dinner tonight. It's a DRUMMING magazine????
#24 - Posted 12/1/07 @4:42AM by Steve [contact]

I consider Rush a public utility. They are always there when you need them. Hopefully we'll get a new album soon.
#25 - Posted 12/1/07 @7:15AM by Prince Sphinc-Tor

Maybe, if the rumor is even true, RUSH and Nick Raskuzcnirxwlpkaqdrsmhinecz....however you spell it are "working on" hammering out the details of his contract to work on the next album and are not actually working on the material yet.

I would however love to see a new RUSH record full of covers of Culture Club, Air Supply, and The Pet Shop Boys...with a sprinkle of Frankie Goes to Hollywood on top.
#26 - Posted 12/1/07 @7:59AM by Prince Sphinc-Tor

While on the subject of crappy music (see post #25) don't know if any of you are big R Kelly fans (I know I love those soulfull dities he spits out!!!!) Check out this Weird Al parody of his classic, megasuperlongerthanthenilemeasuredinmillimetershit Trapped In The Closet...

#27 - Posted 12/1/07 @11:08AM by Pat [contact]

Difficult for me to hope in a new album any time before 2009, and that's being optimistic. I'm more realistically thinking 2010, especially since they're extending the tour into next year. (Oh, how I miss those days when a band would release at least one album each year!) Is our friend sure he saw the real Nick R. and not that impostor who was posting here just before the release of S&A?

Nevertheless, I'm

SOFRITHO
#28 - Posted 12/1/07 @11:23AM by unktehila

Re#26.... R. Kelly, Trapped In the Closet.... holy shit, some of the funniest stuff i 've ever seen... i don't think it's meant to be that way, but the 'show' had me singing my everyday dialogue R. Kelly-style for days.

"yo bitch, there's a midget in the cupboard" genius.
#29 - Posted 12/1/07 @12:46PM by brindle [contact]

Re:pat #27,i agree with you 100% once next years tour is over they will take a full year off as what is now normal before starting the writing process again then a spring 2010 release for the summer outdoor shows which they love doing. At least we will have another live dvd to look forward to,they may as well release it on 3cds because then they will make money off it rather than some pirate company bootlegging it (not incl the free trade fans in that).
#30 - Posted 12/1/07 @11:23PM by Tai Shan [contact]

I'm going to indulge in some shameless self-indulgence and accept that rumor as fact for a second or two.

...

WOOOHOOOO!!!! A new album!! :D

*sigh* Somebody pass me a big grain of salt, please.

Thanks for posting that Weird Al video. After all these years, he's still got the skills.
#31 - Posted 12/2/07 @11:17AM by Sang [contact]

I love the One Little Victory "trainwreck." Brief pause.
#32 - Posted 12/2/07 @12:25PM by pinkfloyd2000 [contact]

Saw Al in concert this past summer and he did a good chunk of "Drive Thru" with the accompanying video playing in the background. Hilarious stuff. Great live show, incidentally, if anyone gets the chance to see him. You may think it'd be lame, but trust me -- it's not. It's just a damn good time. Al is 45 years old now and he has the energy of an 18-year old on stage.
#33 - Posted 12/2/07 @1:38PM by slavetothehormone

As they say, "better late than never"- in which case, I can only be the best. This is

"Random Rush, with your host- slavetothehormone".

First off, I'd like to apologize for not getting this in on Friday. It was the week of my younger sister's birthday (she turned eleven), so we spent the past two days having parties and having family and friends over. Plus, I'm holed up in my room while Mom is gift wrapping, so this is the only time I've found- so here goes:

1) Yess! I can't wait- coming soon, I'll be able to see everything I saw at the concert- except the DVD is in Finland, not Massachusetts, and probably won't be shot from our viewpoint... but other than that, it should bring back memories....

2) They WILL be nominated, and they WILL win, we'll all make sure of that.

3) My first thought upon looking at Neil's pic:

"Wouldn't that make the perfect Rush Christmas card?",

until I saw the look in his eyes that say,

"What? It was cold out... and Alex put me up to it."

4) A cover? I guess the players can't handle the real thing.

5 and 6) Wow- Neil's kit is really getting coverage. Too bad I didn't see it when it was on display in my city.

7) Let's see-

Best Live Act: RUSH
Best Song: Far Cry
Best Rock Album: Systematic Chaos (kidding- Snakes & Arrows).

8) I don't think I can recognize a second-long clip. But maybe I'll check it out- advent is a season of charity.

9) Hmm. My own historical laboratory... I'll sleep on it.

10 and 11) I'll have a look at those...

12) I think I'll need a grain of salt the size of Mount Washington (bumper sticker: "This car climbed a grain of salt"). And none of that regular salt, I mean that delicious Sicilian sea salt that tastes great on pizzas.

It's true- I've got skepticism down to an art, yet I maintain a healthy suspension of disbelief. In fact I've got string I can dangle my disbelief by over a cliff. Get it? Suspension... from a cliff... by a string...?

Alright, I'll stop... In fact, I have to- it's the end of the entry. Merry Christmas.

By the way, #32: Alex is 54, not 45. I'm sure he's very flattered though.
#34 - Posted 12/2/07 @8:31PM by Wall05

I LOVE RUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#35 - Posted 12/3/07 @7:03AM by SF in Prague [contact]

Wow!
the boys DID make S&A in record time...Lerxst says it was the fastest made album since Kings...so maybe they've got the ball rolling (actually they do as we all know) and are going to strike while the iron is hot.
I guess, if i HAD to, i'd buy a new rush album.
