Rush 2008 tour news update
Posted at 9:41AM | comments (58)

Rush Snakes & Arrows TourUPDATE - 12/13@9:36AM: The official tour announcement is out! The San Juan date is confirmed and it's also revealed that they'll be kicking off the tour there - contrary to the rumor that they'd start in Atlantic Canada. They also confirm that the full itinerary will be announced in mid-January and they'll play over 40 more dates. Nothing is mentioned about South America.

UPDATE - 11/21@1:53PM: Dates in Chile, Argentina and Puerto Rico are close to being confirmed. Details in this post.

I have some exciting new updates regarding the 2008 leg of the Snakes & Arrows tour. Before getting to these I thought I'd recap what we already know.

A couple months ago I reported that Rush would be playing several indoor dates in the US and Canada in the Spring of 2008, kicking off in March with a two or three night stand in Atlantic City. The tour would then move up the east coast to Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine, and Atlantic Canada to wrap up the first set of dates before heading south for a handful of dates in late March through early April including New Orleans, New Mexico, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Mississippi.

A few days later I reported that the band would end the 2008 leg in July with a headlining performance on the closing day of a concert commemorating the 400th anniversary of Quebec City.

Then early last month Alex Lifeson confirmed in an interview that the band would indeed be touring in 2008, playing another 46 or so shows.

Now I've just obtained new information which corroborates most of the above and adds to it.

First off, some very good news for Atlantic Canada; that seems to be where the tour will likely kickoff. They'll then work their way south with the band playing the new Prudential Center in Newark for a metro-NYC date, replacing the Atlantic City dates. As far as I know they will still be hitting New Orleans, New Mexico, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi and points in between - and also will be playing about a dozen dates in the Western US.

There's also some very good news for our friends south of the equator; Rush will be playing several dates in South America. Indeed, they'll be down their for nearly 2 weeks which likely means around 8 shows give or take. Brazil, Argentina, Peru, and Chile are about 80% confirmed at this point. The band also plans on recording one of these shows, but I'm unsure of the details or how this recording would be utilized.

All in all the tour has 48 open slots that may or may not all be filled. And it still looks like the tour will end with the band playing at the 400th anniversary celebration in Quebec City on July 4th - which would be Rush's biggest full-length show ever as a crowd of nearly half a million fans are expected.

The official tour date announcement will occur in the 2nd week of January with tickets going on sale at the end of January and early February. They will be releasing the Workin' Them Angels single to coincide with the tour announcement, and plan to release a video for the song which will use portions of the video recordings for the live DVD that was filmed in Rotterdam. They had originally meant to release the single a week or two ago but decided to go this route instead to better market the tour.

That's all for now. I'll end with this disclaimer: the above information is not yet official and could change. That said, my source has been very reliable in the past and I have no reason not to believe them on any of this information. Also, before you start shooting off emails asking me for more details, I can assure you that I'm not holding anything back; what you see above is exactly what I know too - no more, no less. I'll be sure to post any further updates as soon as I hear them.

Can't wait!!!

Looks like Newark is it.

Oh yeah, First!!!

I sure hope xmas doesn't leave my wallet drained, I really want to see them again, I just hope I can afford it.

Here comes the farewell tour :-(
#4 - Posted 11/6/07 @9:59AM by Scott T. [contact]

Looks like I'll have to do some travelling this time. I'll probably get to the east coast to see them in the maritimes then try to get tickets for that huge Quebec city show. Lookin' forward to it, anyone think they'll try to record some new songs before the next tour? Doesn't seem like they'll have time, and they deserve a break. But you never know...

Anyway, this is great news!
#5 - Posted 11/6/07 @10:02AM by Pat [contact]

They haven't played new, as-yet-unreleased songs on tour for something like 25 years, right? So I doubt that. As for a farewell tour, no way. And if they don't come out to Utah, I'll have to make a visit to relatives in NJ or Chicago or LA, I guess (talk about draining wallets).

Thanks, Ed, for keeping us up to date.
#6 - Posted 11/6/07 @10:04AM by Scott T. [contact]

Well I guess you're right, I think I meant more along the lines of a new album :)... but I may be crazy for hoping that.
#7 - Posted 11/6/07 @10:09AM by Toronto Writer [contact]

#5 - Rush has always maintinaed that they don't have any unreleased songs sitting around in a vault somewhere. Not sure what songs you might be referring to from 25 years ago. Would be sweet if they did have a few songs kicking around elsewhere for sure.
#8 - Posted 11/6/07 @10:09AM by DCRushFan [contact]

I'm still hoping for a DC-area date. Verizon Center would be fantastic (I could probably walk it in 45-50 minutes, and get there faster by subway). Comcast Center (U of MD) or Patriot Center (George Mason U.) would also work.
#9 - Posted 11/6/07 @10:15AM by Michael Senyo [contact]

Here's hoping that another Hollywood Bowl show might be in the works. There is also a new venue in the so-called downtown of LA called the Nokia theatre (or Nokia something). I have no doubt that the Band could easily gross another million plus....

All right! It looks like lots of us have got a "reason" to visit long-neglected relatives in cities where rush coincidentally will play this spring!
For me, i guess i'm gonna see my cousins in cincy and kentucky!!!
and if they play Here Again, i'm gonna soil my undies. ;-)

OMG, I cant wait for an official release of the south american dates....here in chile we've been waiting for so long...
#12 - Posted 11/6/07 @10:31AM by brindle [contact]

Thats great news ed,hope you all have a great time on tour guys and i will look forward to your reports, pics etc. Fingers crossed there wont be"farewell"announcement in the new year with the tour dates, because i still feel they have plenty to offer and i live in hope they will get to 20 studio albums and a final visit over the "pond" !! But im pleased they are revisiting south america again, they deserve another visit after the lively Brazil shows in 2002.So have loads of fun my friends> from a jealous rush fan from Durham in England .
#13 - Posted 11/6/07 @10:33AM by unktehila

awesome news!!!
though i think i might agree with Max O. #3.... i think this could well be the farewell tour. why else would Neil agree to 48 more dates?
As well as the boys planning another show recording.
And as the Grand Finale, end the whole thing with a gargantuan bang in their home, Quebec City for their largest crowd ever?

hopefully not, of course.
#14 - Posted 11/6/07 @10:39AM by Michael Senyo [contact]

What is our collective thinking here? Could this be "the end"? All signs seem to point to the pivotal will of NEP.

oh boy! you guys are depressing me....life without Rush tours? I'm choosing not to believe it! I'd rather be in denial.

Road trip to Quebec City....I see it in my future!
#17 - Posted 11/6/07 @11:04AM by leezgirl [contact]

I just watched the VHI show on the Who and they will likely keep touring off and on. It sounded like a cash flow issue. I guess when you are handed a 2 million dollar check for a concert you keep doing what you are doing as long a there is an interest in the music. I can't imagine this is the end.
#18 - Posted 11/6/07 @11:04AM by Gattaca [contact]

I don't agree this will be a farewell tour. A 20th studio recording would cap off a career on a major note. Alas both recording and tour will probably be three years away. I mentioned before, 'Yes' ended when all members went over 60. We have a few more years to go with the boys.

btw After reading "Ghost Writer" I think NEP needs to stash away some more retirement money, to live the lifestyle he has become a custom too. His beautiful, young wife should keep his energy up. Not ready for the warm wrap around the fire lifestyle.
#19 - Posted 11/6/07 @11:14AM by Toronto Writer [contact]

#13 - Toronto is their hometown. Quebec is another city in the cog.

I really think these guys would let us know when they plan on calling it a day. As per Geddy's comments recently, they wouldn't call it a Farewell Tour, but they would let us know that that was it. I also think another reason for letting "us" know that they're done would be to get attendance numbers up. If I was a lukewarm fan and knew that Rush was never going to play in my town again, I would go and see them.

Anyway, I fear the end is soon. If it is, good for them. They've put in far more than their share of hard work, and have done a lot for us fans.

re#19... sorry, i know - of course - Toronto is their hometown. i meant their "home" on a broader scale... their country.

Look what you started Max, with that flippant comment of yours!
#23 - Posted 11/6/07 @1:26PM by Rodney Kolterman [contact]

I've attened both Hollywood Bowl tour stops (R30/Snakes & Arrows), and I certainly agree it's a rather majestic setting and magnificent place. In addition to the wonderful aesthetics; just the historic appreciation and enchantment of "The Bowl" adds to the thrill and excitement of Rush live. It's like a cathedral. A sanctuary.

However, like Michael Stenyo mentioned before me, I too "HOPE" they'll consider playing at least one evening at The Nokia Theater. link From what I understand, it's supposed to be a helluva venue; something somewhat sorta similar to Radio City Music Hall. (I believe the approximate capacity is between 7,000 - 9,000!)

Sure there's somethin' kinda cool about large, multi-purpose sports arenas and the excitement of a sold-out crowd... But I'll choose a more intimate setting designed and engineered speciifially for showcasing live stage performances anytime.
#24 - Posted 11/6/07 @1:29PM by cobra611 [contact]

Very disappointed in them replacing Atlantic City with NEWARK...STUPID!!!!
#25 - Posted 11/6/07 @1:48PM by kenster2112@sbcglobal.net [contact]

C'mon Tim , Let's grab a few RIAB'ers and trek to Quebec for July 4th!!
#26 - Posted 11/6/07 @1:49PM by Rodney Kolterman [contact]

...and if they're truly considering filming another Snakes & Arrows show (in addition to Rotterdam) from somewhere in South America; that really leads me to believe we could/should expect a majorly overhauled and entirely revamped set list!
#27 - Posted 11/6/07 @1:50PM by kenster2112@sbcglobal.net [contact]

Newark is next the Airport. Makes perfect sense!
#28 - Posted 11/6/07 @1:51PM by jaytee578 [contact]

as for the farewell tour thoughts... i mean, who knows, anything is possible. at the same time though, their momentum is at a definite high right now. all the things they're doing seem to be so future-oriented. i have a hard time believing that this would be the end of them making music, especially since they have all seemed to express interest in working with nick again on an album.

of course, the end is not TOO far off, but let's hope it's further off than 2008.

see you guys out on the road somewhere...
#29 - Posted 11/6/07 @2:08PM by Sergi [contact]

Finally Chile in the list and the rest of Latin America!! At ANY date i would be able to cut ANY other compromise until university ones for this live-experience
#30 - Posted 11/6/07 @2:31PM by dinoman [contact]

From things said in the past (and present) by various members of the band, I don't think even THEY will know if any given tour or any given recording will be the last. They seem to have a "one day at a time" attitude. Geddy has said that they approach recording with a "no expectations" attitude. They get together, see what happens, and if it works it works, when it no longer works, they'll call it quits. I respect that.

It is, however, perplexing that Neil has agreed to nearly 50 more shows! However, it's not like he just started to despise touring this time around. It seems he has always dreaded it. It's just that this time he has opened up to us (the fans) about it. Perhaps that has functioned as a kind of "therapy" and has helped him enjoy it a tiny bit more.

As for the future, i doubt they will tour again any time soon. However, that doesn't mean they won't record. And frankly, I'd be perfectly happy with them recording a couple of albums before another tour. Although, touring seems to be where the cashola is, so I'm not sure they'd record without planning to tour.

And I certainly agree with the notion of a revamped set list, especially with the new info.
#31 - Posted 11/6/07 @2:42PM by SnowDoggy [contact]

I think this is it - A Greatest Hits Farewell Tour.

I know there are a bunch of bands who have toured into their 60s, but those bands don't have drummers who have to work nearly as hard as Neil night after night. Let's give the poor guy a break. He's like a professional QB who knows his body can't take a full season much longer.

Don't fret though - there will still be gigs here and there and maybe some new material. But an all-out 50 city tour? No way. And it makes sense that they would do it after only a small break from S&A. If they waited a year or two they would probably never get their gear out of storage again.
#32 - Posted 11/6/07 @2:43PM by timintey [contact]

The Pru Center in Newark sticks out like a sore thumb. The surrounding area is a sh!thole. Looks like a nice arena tho. Very convenient as far as flying in and out of EWR. Just don't know about pre show festivities in that area. Might be the airport bar Ken...
#33 - Posted 11/6/07 @2:49PM by AirGuiTar [contact]

Man, Im really hoping they hit up Halifax, Nova Scotia. There aren't that many Atlantic Canadian cities a band like Rush would be playing in, so here's hoping!
#34 - Posted 11/6/07 @3:09PM by RushJax [contact]

Man, I wish they'd really make a stop here in Jacksonville, Florida. It's been YEARS since they played here and deservedly so. We had a crappy auditorium, etc. But now we have a fantastic facility for them to play in! Come to Jax Rush!
#35 - Posted 11/6/07 @3:53PM by cpb [contact]

Dinoman - you've got the right idea! I don't think THEY know what will be their "farewell tour" until after the fact.

In answer to Toronto Writer, what Pat meant is that, in the Permanent Waves/Moving Pictures era (and I think through to Signals), the band would do a "warm-up" tour to test out songs, either in soundcheck or the show, before taking them to the studio. "Tom Sawyer" is a good example of this. So it's not "songs from the vault" - it's "works-in-progress".

And how awesome for those in South America! Good to see it happening for you.

Happy Tuesday, Rush fans!

What's all this "Farewell Tour" CRAP???!!!

Nothing like throwing a stick in the mud, or a wet blanket on the fire, or kicking a RUSH fan in the nuts with a pair of steel toed boots....or eating the brown acid.

Let's be glad they are touring some more, although there is no talk of FLA which means...ROOOOOOOOOOADTRIIIIIIIP!!!!!!!!!

Glad to see some posts from our friends in CHILE!!!!

What out America..I'm a CRAPPY driver on mission!!!!!!

Well let see. I live in Tennessee and I grew up in New Mexico. I may have to catch 2 shows next year and buy 2 videos too. 2008 is looking good.
#40 - Posted 11/6/07 @8:55PM by pinkfloyd2000 [contact]

My dream would be for Rush to play the very small (but FANTASTIC) Palace Theater in downtown Louisville, Ky. Anyone else seen a show there? Hands down, it's the best venue I have ever been to.
#41 - Posted 11/7/07 @12:30AM by musicofthespheres [contact]

looks like the last time they topped 100 shows was on RTB tour (103 shows by my math) - so this isn't unheard of. That tour included Europe. I agree with others that they don't know that this is the last tour or 3rd to last or whatever. But how can they not consider the fact that they aren't getting any younger - might as well play europe and south america again while they can!! get busy.

#44 - Posted 11/7/07 @2:14PM by Rodney Kolterman [contact]

Anybody have some thoughts or insight whether the orgainizers of this quazy Quebec Quadricentennial quoncert will allow our boys to "headline" this event?

I was slightly shocked or moderately surprised (and kinda offended - but always keepin' that stuff in proper perspective) to see Rush "opening" for the Rolling Stones during that S.A.R.S. benefit show in Toronto several years ago.

So I'm fearing Rush might be relegated to the auxiliary side-stage with a 4:00 PM stagecall - just so whatever Fortune 500 corporation holding primary sponsorship rights to this shindig - can showcase "their boy" to shil either Coca-Cola, Pepsi, or Ford Trucks during prime-time.

("Concert hall - echoes with the sounds of salesmen...")

I understand, even in Toronto, the Rolling Stones surely have more "drawing power"... And for a charity-type, philanthropic-like fundraising concert; I thought Rush (whether it was an issue to them or not - we'll probably never know) showed great class and respect by playin' during that coveted noon timeslot or whatever.

But if Rush is forced to take a backseat to somebody like Justin Timberlake, I'm gonna fuckin' puke.
#45 - Posted 11/7/07 @2:49PM by Rodney Kolterman [contact]

Ooops. Nevermind. My reading comprehension skills suck serious shit.

Ed's all over it: A few days later I reported that the band would end the 2008 leg in July with a "HEADLINING" performance on the closing day of a concert commemorating the 400th anniversary of Quebec City.
#46 - Posted 11/7/07 @5:57PM by Rob

Some good points made about the physical drain on these guys....They will call it quits when Neil can't do it, or Geddy's voice can't handle it anymore.
Until then...Lets enjoy another tour!!
#47 - Posted 11/7/07 @10:40PM by PwrWndws [contact]

I'm disappointed the boys are not doing Atlantic city. Hopefully they'll make a stop in Philadelphia at the Wachovia Center along the way. Definitely will get a sold out crowd there. I don't believe they actually played in Philly in quite some years although they played across the Delaware River at the Tweeter Center in Camden. There is definitely alot of Rush fanatics here in Philly who'd be disappointed. If not, I'll have to travel up to Newark to see them. We'll see.
#48 - Posted 11/7/07 @11:30PM by ReGorLaTroy [contact]

I live about 10 miles away from Newark...pretty fotunate for me! I'm pretty excited about that one!

Are you sure that Peru is in their plans? oh man I almost faint and is very closer that gives me a heart attack. I know that the band had planned a tour in Brasil, Chile and Argentina...but in Peru??? WOW!!! IS A DREAM COME TRUE
#51 - Posted 11/15/07 @8:57AM by billybob2112 [contact]

Here's hoping that the boys return to Los Angeles on this rumored tour! I saw them at the Bowl, and it was almost a religious experience!
As for the new Nokia arena, I haven't been there yet, but Rush has always said they prefer to play smaller, more intimate venues than the huge sports arenas. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed!!
