Snakes & Arrows tour house music playlist
Posted at 10:39AM | comments (54)

You asked for it ... and Rush.com has delivered. Since the start of the tour I've received several questions about the house music (compiled by Neil Peart) played prior to the show. I recognized many of the tunes but did not have a complete playlist ... until now. Rush.com just posted it. Here it is:

Tommy Overture - The Who
Mojo Pin - Jeff Buckley
Trains - Porcupine Tree
Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel
All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
Fear of a Blank Planet - Porcupine Tree
Welcome to the Machine - Pink Floyd
Eria Tarka - The Mars Volta
Roundabout - Yes
Looking for a Place to Happen - The Tragically Hip
Aqualung - Jethro Tull
Last Goodbye - Jeff Buckley
Baba O'Reilly - The Who
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
2112 Overture - String Ensemble
The Temples of Syrinx - String Ensemble
I Know What I Like - Genesis
The Prophet - Yes
Hallelujuah - Jeff Buckley
18 People Live in Harmony - Dredg
Dazed and Confused - Led Zeppelin
Bobcaygeon - The Tragically Hip
21st Century Schizoid Man - King Crimson
Inertiatic E. S. P. - The Mars Volta
The Sound of Muzak - Porcupine Tree
Echo - Vertical Horizon
Fifty Mission Cap - The Tragically Hip
So Real - Jeff Buckley
Time - Pink Floyd
Good Days, Bad Days - Richard Butler
No Opportunity Necessary - Yes
Anesthetize - Porcupine Tree
Say Hello 2 Heaven - Temple of the Dog
Babe I'm Gonna Leave you - Led Zeppelin
Open Car - Porcupine Tree
Evenflow - Pearl Jam
Hells Bells - AC/DC
Crosstown Traffic - Jimi Hendrix
Kashmir - Led Zeppelin
Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull
How Many More Times - Led Zeppelin
Us and Them - Pink Floyd

Hats off to Neil for compiling such a great list of artists/songs; I like just about all of these bands. Thanks to timbale for the heads up.

First!

Wow...what a GREAT playlist there. I'm getting there early!
#2 - Posted 8/16/07 @10:44AM by JesseZ [contact]

After two shows I only heard the last 5 or 6 on that list. Very grateful to see it posted.
#3 - Posted 8/16/07 @10:50AM by m@ [contact]

Ya, I was hearing Anesthetize at the Dallas show and was very pleased. That's a way sweet list there. Leave it again to Rush to deliver, even when they're not on stage.
#4 - Posted 8/16/07 @10:58AM by Electric Brain Elderly [contact]

What is this? Is this what I heard in the background interview at Rush.com It plays while people are coming in? Do they still use that 3 stooges opener right before they get on stage?

AC/DC?? AWESOME!
#5 - Posted 8/16/07 @11:02AM by maestro [contact]

Hmmm, Well...

I suppose that if one enjoys listening Rush, one would enjoy hearing this compilation.

I wouldn't mind; lotsa of great tunes on board.
#6 - Posted 8/16/07 @11:11AM by Dirk [contact]

Wouldn't be a rock concert without Aqualung!
#7 - Posted 8/16/07 @11:21AM by Spindrifter [contact]

'Hallelujuah' by Jeff Buckley was the first tune played when the show ended at the White River show and its not on the list.
#8 - Posted 8/16/07 @11:27AM by dadof4 [contact]

One week till Kansas and 8 days till St Louis
#9 - Posted 8/16/07 @11:36AM by Liverpool.78

Some great songs there on that list, taking me right back to my Youth! 'Thick as a brick' - haven't heard that in an age; gonna go dig it out :-)

Spindrifter, I think they confused "Grace" and "Hallelujah."

I'd forgotten that Neil selected that music until I heard "Hallelujah" while leaving the concert. Then I remembered my "Roadshow."

It's funny how I now know more about Neil than the other guys. When is Alex and Geddy going to write their tell-alls? :)
#11 - Posted 8/16/07 @11:54AM by chutch15 [contact]

Wow, I'm surprised at the really old Yes tracks "The Prophet" and "No Opp." Very cool.
#12 - Posted 8/16/07 @12:17PM by amyberthelet [contact]

At the end of the Dallas show, as the light came up I heard 'Hallelujah' - I remember reading about that song in 'Traveling Music' and then I HAD to have a listen - so sad and beautiful. So once I recognized it, I wouldn't leave 'til it was over! I also remember hearing Yes at the start and also LZ...only thing is I could only make out a few songs cuz it wasn't loud enough. Well, at the intermission I had the excuse of mild deafness (in row G)....
#13 - Posted 8/16/07 @12:18PM by dinoman [contact]

Spin (#7), it is on the list, though not first (it's 20 songs down).
#14 - Posted 8/16/07 @12:20PM by kenster2112@sbcglobal.net [contact]

I could've sworn I heard floyd over the crowd. Now I know was right.(for once)
#15 - Posted 8/16/07 @12:39PM by timintey [contact]

Hallelujah was played at Charlotte as well. Great vocals. Jeff Buckley left us way too soon.

Hey Spin - sorry for what happened. I answered your e. 'No RUSH!'
#16 - Posted 8/16/07 @12:42PM by jonfiredaman02 [contact]

Thats weird, I'm 110% sure I heard Jessica by the Allman Brothers at the Jones Beach show.
#17 - Posted 8/16/07 @1:05PM by Rubinowits [contact]

Some good selections like Genesis' obscure I Know What I Like. Some cliches too. Neil chooses these, right? But who needs to hear Aqualung again? Tull has so many more great songs. A playlist like this should consist of non-Radio hits. Radio has ruined great songs by playing the same songs over and over, such as some of these songs like Roundabout, Thick as a Brick and Baba O'Reilly. Evenflow? Yikes.
#18 - Posted 8/16/07 @1:18PM by Liverpool.78

I guess Neil picks what he likes, reflecting his own tastes and what he is listening to, and not what he thinks the audience ought to hear.

Liver.
#19 - Posted 8/16/07 @1:55PM by pinkfloyd2000 [contact]

Yeah, just because some of these songs are overplayed by classic rock radio doesn't make them not good. No matter how many times you've heard it on the radio, "Aqualung" is a great friggin' song. Now, that said, I've been wishing for years for our local classic rock station to branch out somewhat from "Aqualung," "Stairway To Heaven," "Free Bird," etc., but it's a worthless cause. Clear Channel rules all. I'll never forget the day I learned that radio was ruined -- it was a while ago, when I was in high school (circa 1989-92), and I called a local radio station to make a request and was told, "We can't play that." *Can't* play that, he said. Ah, long gone are the days when DJs were more like Jim Ladd and less like Bob Q. Corporate.
#20 - Posted 8/16/07 @2:06PM by Rubinowits [contact]

To: pinkfloyd2000 Since it's a worthless cause, it's up to others to play the (radio) rarities. Wouldn't you rather hear Embryo than Comfortably Numb?
#21 - Posted 8/16/07 @2:13PM by Michael Senyo [contact]

Hello Fellow Rushians!

Hey #19 (oops) Don't forget the great Scot Muni in NYC on WNEW fm. He passed away this year.

LA radio just plain sucks, especially KLOS. Indie (103.1) has its moments, but is also gradually going overr to the darke side - commercialism!

#22 - Posted 8/16/07 @2:39PM by Rubinowits [contact]

Muni was cool. Indeed.
#23 - Posted 8/16/07 @3:12PM by Liverpool.78

Isn't the point of this house music playlist that it is what Neil wanted to put together for us to hear? I don't think airplay, or lack of it, comes in to it. I like quite a lot of the songs on the list and, as I said earlier, memories of my youth were brought to the fore. Maybe that was Neil's intention.

Just my thoughts.

Liver.
#24 - Posted 8/16/07 @3:14PM by Rubinowits [contact]

I realize that Neil's probably not thinking about airplay or lack of. I just wish I didn't have to hear songs I have heard a million times. I can complain, you know. I have that right. Hey, thanks a lot.
#25 - Posted 8/16/07 @3:23PM by Botcherby [contact]

I knew the band chose the songs as soon as I heard The Mars Volta and King Crimson. Say Hello 2 Heaven was one I certainly didnt expect though. Keep up the awesome taste in music Neil :)
#26 - Posted 8/16/07 @3:37PM by Pwrgirl [contact]

Actually, I was introduced to King Crimson from the concert I attended. Never heard them before...and here is "In the Court of the King Crimson"! I downloaded it after the concert, I dug it so much;)
#27 - Posted 8/16/07 @3:38PM by JPRushHed [contact]

Awesome that Neil knows about Dredg. Oh, btw the song is called "18 People Living In Harmony"
#28 - Posted 8/16/07 @3:41PM by unktehila [contact]

Temple Of The Dog was a surprise to me as well. cool.
good to see a healthy chunk of Led Zep, King Crimson, Porcupine Tree, and especially The Mars Volta. it's a great list.
wish they were more adventurous in selecting the Pink Floyd numbers, but it still kicks ass.
damn, it'd be fun as hell to be in that position and make a list of songs you like to be played at your concert, knowing that the fans are gonna dig em, and analyze them all too. i'm jealous.

#21

You should get SIRIUS satellite radio....Always something good on it.
#30 - Posted 8/16/07 @4:16PM by unktehila [contact]

BTW.... the grEat Max Roach passed away last night. this artistic force was a total legend. anyone on this board who has read any of Neil's recent prose concerning the songs of S&A, his solos, his practice routine, etc., is aware of the huge, indescrible influence the great Max Roach had on Neil, as well as on drumming and innovative music in general over the decades.
it's a sad day.

Glad to see Bobcaygeon on the list....discovered this song at the end of the Trailor park boys movie. Read about the Tragically Hip in Travelling music. What a great song....wonder why they never made it in the states?
#32 - Posted 8/16/07 @4:36PM by Rob [contact]

I'm sure Neil feels a shadow cross his heart...Max Roach RIP
#33 - Posted 8/16/07 @4:41PM by Rubinowits [contact]

Rob: Nice tip to Nobody's Hero.
#34 - Posted 8/16/07 @5:16PM by dinoman [contact]

Yeah Rob, for some reason Tragically Hip never quite made it in the states, but they are (or at least were) HUGE in Canada. In '95 I was in Alberta for the summer and went to see a festival concert call Another Roadside Attraction featuring the Tragically Hip. It was a fairly major event and, in addition to the Hip, featured Ziggy Marley, Blues Traveller, Matthew Sweet and others (can't remember them all - many years and many braincells ago). The crowd was certainly into the whole show, but when Tragically Hip came out, the place went absolutely NUTS. I'm not sure I've ever seen a crowd as into a band as at that concert. Even though I had never heard of them, it was easy to get caught up in it.

That summer I also was introduced to Barenaked Ladies, another obscure Canadian band. I didn't think all that much of them, but somehow they did manage to catch on here a couple of years later.
#35 - Posted 8/16/07 @5:50PM by Dino [contact]

Hallelujuah IS on the list.

Rob, look around for a video of The Hip doing a cover of Limelight. Done quite well. It was a while ago (Downey still had hair). You can catch a glimpse of it on R30 also.
#36 - Posted 8/16/07 @6:08PM by Liverpool.78

The Yes track, 'No Opportunity Necessary' is based on a Richie Havens track from his 1968 album, 'Something else, again'.

#37 - Posted 8/16/07 @6:20PM by m@ [contact]

BNL were quite popular in 1999 or so in the States with "One Week", but nothing before or after that. Pretty cool band, though.
#38 - Posted 8/16/07 @6:23PM by Codackussell [contact]

King Crimson and Genesis!! Nice...
#39 - Posted 8/16/07 @6:54PM by dinoman [contact]

(#37) They also had "If I Had A Million Dollars" and "Brian Wilson" which I've heard here and there on the radio (which were, I think, before "One Week"). I think there's also one from their latest album on the radio but I can't remember what it's calles.
#40 - Posted 8/16/07 @9:02PM by ghost__rider [contact]

Hey all you talking BNL - grab the song 'Grade 9' from their debut disc - Gordon. A couple of nods to the 3 travellers, the men of Willowdale. They creatively mix in the SOR riff, and the bridge section of Tom Saywer. Such a cool take on the 9er experience....

RETRUCHU - kinda like a 'vurp', burping and tasting your food again....
#41 - Posted 8/16/07 @9:51PM by Steve [contact]

Anyone notice on Rush's myspace page, where it says type of label, it say's indi, meaning independant? Since when is Atlantic/Anthem considered an indie label?

Yeah I notice weird obscure things sometimes, I know.
#42 - Posted 8/16/07 @9:56PM by jaytee578 [contact]

glad they posted this--i was really digging the house music and just figured it was random (even though i was starting to wonder why i'd heard the same songs at 3 different shows)... cool to hear that neil picked it... the man has good taste in music, which is no surprise i guess :)

i wonder if solisbury hill was a nod to geddy--he's said in the past that it's his favorite song.
#43 - Posted 8/16/07 @10:37PM by syrinx [contact]

It's nice to see that Neil and I have very similar taste in music. I have all but TWO of these songs in my personal collection! The missing two (in case you were wondering) are:

Echo - Vertical Horizon
Good Days, Bad Days - Richard Butler

#44 - Posted 8/16/07 @10:38PM by Dirk [contact]

It's a shame about Roach, he was a huge influence on the whole world of drumming. I'm sad to see a god like that go.
#45 - Posted 8/17/07 @11:21AM by Pat [contact]

Steve (#41): I didn't think Rush had a MySpace page. What's the URL you're looking at?

As for the playlist: We can be thankful that Neil chose overplayed songs like "Aqualung" instead of regaling us with 98-degrees or a lot of Frank Sinatra (as much as you have to respect the guy, he wouldn't warm ME up for a Rush show).
#46 - Posted 8/17/07 @11:44AM by unktehila [contact]

Pat - definitely. that's funny. i'm not a big Sinatra guy either. particularly at a summer concert anxiously awaiting Rush to hit the stage. Neil has great taste, especially this list, but what's up with the 98 degrees thing? yikes.
#47 - Posted 8/17/07 @1:55PM by desertrushgirl

I think it's great that when you walk into a RUSH concert, that you have Neil Peart as your personal DJ.

I don't care what he plays, I just love knowing that he picked the songs and is playing them for us.

This list sucks!!!!

Where's the disco!!!!????

The disco's not here, thankfully!!
#51 - Posted 8/17/07 @4:46PM by cygnusthegodofbalanceushallbe [contact]

i could've swore that i heard a Roger Waters solo song each night leaving Shoreline then Concord... didn't recognize it other than Rog's voice.
#52 - Posted 8/18/07 @1:03AM by jw

Great list.

Just play it a little louder... Not too much to overtake conversation... but enough to avoid straining to wonder what it is.
#53 - Posted 8/18/07 @10:56AM by rushboy13 [contact]

Love the tragicilly hip.. The big surprise for me is Richard Butler. The only Richard Butler i know is from the Psycedlic Furs....and I LOVE the furs they are my 3rd favorite band. behind Rush and Smashing Pumpkins....
#54 - Posted 8/22/07 @6:24PM by skl183 [contact]
