Tour update: setlist substitution
Posted at 11:02AM | comments (58)

Rush Snakes & Arrows TourIn case you missed it in yesterday's Darien Lake post (SPOILER), Rush made one setlist substitution in last night's show. It'll be interesting to watch whether they continue playing this song or switch back and forth. The song in question was one which they had been playing in their sound checks throughout the tour so far. To find out what the song was and for a completely updated setlist check below the fold.

Here is the setlist as of the July 4th Darien Lake show. Up until this show they had been playing Summertime Blues. But for the Darien show substituted it for Distant Early Warning, which they had been playing in sound check.

Set 1:

Video Intro (features all three band members)

Limelight
Digital Man
Entre Nous
Mission
Freewill
The Main Monkey Business
The Larger Bowl (Bob & Doug video intro)
Secret Touch
Circumstances
Between The Wheels
Dreamline

Intermission

Set 2:

Video Intro (features Alex)

Far Cry
Workin' Them Angels
Armor And Sword
Spindrift
The Way The Wind Blows
Subdivisions
Natural Science
Witch Hunt
Malignant Narcissism
Drum Solo
Hope
Summertime Blues or Distant Early Warning
The Spirit Of Radio
Tom Sawyer (South Park video intro)

Encore:

One Little Victory
A Passage to Bangkok
YYZ

Video outro (features Geddy)

congrats,bf !!!

Good. Blues is lame. I hope they switch out some more lameos for a better setlist. And this "OMG IM FURT" stuff is getting on my nerves.
#4 - Posted 7/5/07 @11:12AM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

just havin some fun, electric.DONT MEAN TO GET ON YOUR NERVES!! geeze,go smoke a big fatty and relax !! and i dont think there are many "lameos" in the setlist, i think it is a very good setlist.peace!!
#5 - Posted 7/5/07 @11:19AM by pinkfloyd2000 [contact]

Nice substitution. I would prefer "Kid Gloves" or "Afterimage" instead (i.e., another relic), but this is A-OK, too.
#6 - Posted 7/5/07 @11:22AM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

i dont think its going to be the last change either,i think in the second half of the tour they may add a couple of different songs.maybe?but even if they dont,i think its still a very good setlist!!
#7 - Posted 7/5/07 @11:24AM by Bravest Face [contact]

Electric, what are some of the lameos you would suggest removing? :)

I think aside from Summertime Blues I am fairly satisfied with the setlist. The only change I would recommend would be for them to add songs and make the concert longer! lol But I don't think that's going to happen.
#8 - Posted 7/5/07 @11:30AM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

after my initial inevitable disappointments(no necromancer,la villa,ect...) i realized that about 22 songs from the setlist are from albums that are all in my top ten favorites,so i cant really complain !!
#9 - Posted 7/5/07 @11:32AM by Bravest Face [contact]

Necro, highlights for me are:

everything from S&A
Digital Man
Natural Science
Entre Nous
Witch Hunt
A Passage to Bangkok
Circumstances
Subdivisions
Freewill
The Spirit of Radio
YYZ
BTW

I think that's pretty much most of the show, so needless to say I can't complain at all!
#10 - Posted 7/5/07 @11:40AM by subdivincent [contact]

great to hear that "blues" is out. - lame indeed - i'll give a song that needs to go - one little victory. just doesn't measure up to earthshine or peaceable. that's my opinion and i'm sticking to it.
#11 - Posted 7/5/07 @11:44AM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

bf- from everything ive heard, i wouldnt want them to drop any of those you just mentioned.like you said, i guess i would just ADD some tunes,BUT THEN WE WOULD HAVE A 5 HR CONCERT ,LOL!!!
#12 - Posted 7/5/07 @11:49AM by Rubinowits [contact]

Fantastic! They finally replaced a non-Rush with a Rush song. It's about friggin time!

And yes, please drop One Little Victory and play Peacable Kingdom or Freeze.
#13 - Posted 7/5/07 @11:51AM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

rubino-id be down with either of those two substitutions instead of olv, i guess they really like to play that song. i think it has special meaning to them.
#14 - Posted 7/5/07 @11:52AM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

rubino-are you in michigan,dude?
#15 - Posted 7/5/07 @11:53AM by Bravest Face [contact]

Necro, I will agree on OLV. I think that song represents a statement by the band that they were back after Neil's tragedies. Plus it's just a great song live too!!
#16 - Posted 7/5/07 @11:56AM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

bf-post #15-EXACTLY!!! i havent seen them do it live yet(i missed the vapor trails tour)but saw it on "rush in rio" and felt it had alot of energy.
#17 - Posted 7/5/07 @12:00PM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

lol, wait!!! i forgot i saw it on the r30 tour but i think i was getting a beer at the time. lol
#18 - Posted 7/5/07 @12:05PM by Bravest Face [contact]

Necro, the main thing I remembered when seeing it live was I could feel the heat coming off the flames! I honestly can't remember from Charlotte if they did the flames or not, probably did, but I do remember the last two tours! That alone is worth them doing that song!
#19 - Posted 7/5/07 @12:05PM by 1-2-bucklemyshoe [contact]

By the way, S&A just jumped up from #93 to #55 on the Billboard 200, thanks to the MVI sales, and perhaps some more sales from the tour.

In looking back at the charts for the past 7 or 8 albums, they NEVER went back up after the initial release. Usually its a quick slide off the charts.

They need to get another single out soon. Spindrift obviously hasn't gone anywhere. They need to get TLB and WTA out. Those are the most radio friendly in my opinion.
#20 - Posted 7/5/07 @12:07PM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

i would go with "workin them angels" as my next release.
#21 - Posted 7/5/07 @12:39PM by RushKid [contact]

YES!! It's about damn time they did something about Summertime, I always liked the Who version better. I hope they keep it that way until my show. As for the next single, I like necro's idea of WTA. It is a great song for a single and Alex says it's his highlight of the album, so what can go wrong with that?

WE HOLD ON!
#24 - Posted 7/5/07 @1:05PM by Toronto Writer [contact]

Now I don't have a song to go pee during. Hmmm... Oh well, I'd rather "hold it" than hear SB.
#25 - Posted 7/5/07 @1:36PM by SnowDoggy [contact]

If I had Rush's ear I would tell them to rotate the 9 S&A Songs. Play 5 or 6 a night, then they could add CttH, In the End, Fly By Night, The Camera Eye, etc.

And put "Summertime Blues" back in the vault and leave it there.

I bet after The Mohegan Show they come out with a bit of a different format. After 10-12 shows they must notice what's working and what isn't
#26 - Posted 7/5/07 @1:59PM by debbie [contact]

wow! That's quite a switch up! I suspect they have a couple of different set lists they practiced up. There could be another change before my August shows. At least no one can say they aren't surprised by the set list when they show up for their concert! ;) You never know what might happen.
#27 - Posted 7/5/07 @2:19PM by SnowDoggy [contact]

Actually Debbie, my one lone knock on Rush is that we know EXACTLY what is going to happen.

That's why even one song change in the set is so refreshing. Imagine if they played a new set every night like Dream Theatre does?

One can dream....
#28 - Posted 7/5/07 @2:27PM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

even though i think the setlist is overall very good, i do like snowdoggy's idea too!!
#29 - Posted 7/5/07 @2:54PM by debbie [contact]

But SnowDoggy, that's what I'm saying. Now with this switch-up, no one honestly can say they KNOW for a fact, beyond a shadow of a doubt, what songs they're going to play. Now, you might be able to narrow it down between the two set lists, but which one is going to be a surprise.

*laugh* As much as them doing a different set every time would be interesting, I suspect it would be a bit difficult. Plus, then you'll have the people that are disappointed they didn't get song A like the people got the night before and they got song B instead and didn't like it as well. You know how it goes, You can't please everyone! :)
#30 - Posted 7/5/07 @3:27PM by Liverpool.78

DEW has more impact than SB and, of course, as it's their song this is preferable.

Good to know that they're going to switch things about though; it'll be like Forest Gump's chocolates now - "you never know what you're gonna get" :-)

Liver.
#31 - Posted 7/5/07 @3:31PM by gttim [contact]

Damnit! I love DEW! I had to hear Summertime Blues in Atlanta instead of DEW? Crap!
#32 - Posted 7/5/07 @4:16PM by debbie [contact]

Well, gttim, at least you didn't have to listen to Geddy "chew" at you repeatedly!! I hate that! I hate that!! I really hope I don't hear that, it'll make me wanna run up on stage and slap him. :P
#33 - Posted 7/5/07 @4:19PM by Bravest Face [contact]

Debbie, you're going to have to explain the "chew" comment, I don't get that. What does that mean?
#34 - Posted 7/5/07 @4:22PM by SnowDoggy [contact]

"You can't please everyone" - Truer words were never spoken Debbie

I love these guys as much as anyone in here, right down to the "RtB" Keychain in my pocket.

I just feel that the internet has made "standardized" sets and shows obsolete. The only people who are honestly and truly surprised are those lucky enough to be there opening night. And that's it.

I am going to 2 Shows - this Monday @ Mohegan Sun and "The Big One" @ MSG in September. And as excited as I am to see them, it kind of sucks that I know for a fact that they are going to open with "Limelight". And then close with "Tom Sawyer"

They never have to become a jam band where they play 25 different songs a night. But what about switching "Circumstaces" w "Limelight" once in a while?

Or Switching the order of the sets? Opening with "Far Cry", and then opening the 2nd set with "Limelight" at a few shows?

I mean how hard is that? Don't tell me they can't because of all the technical lighting and sound. If every other big act on the planet can do it so can Rush.

If every Rush COVER BAND can do it they can do it!
#35 - Posted 7/5/07 @4:25PM by Bravest Face [contact]

SnowDoggy, I am in full agreement. I know the band wants to have a very rehearsed sound to please many of the picky fans who seem to criticize any little mistake that's bound to happen at a live show, but those fans just need to get over it! The guys should change it up a bit. I want them to stick with the S&A stuff, but they could change up a few of their older songs here and there, that would be neat!
#36 - Posted 7/5/07 @4:30PM by debbie [contact]

:P Yes, Aaron (and I answered you in the one above where you asked too). Listen to the song. How many times does Geddy say "chew"? It stands out. Really, it does. Unfortunately, it's supposed to be "without YOU", "about YOU", but all I hear is "chew" "chew" "chew"...sounds like a damn train!! ;)

SnowDoggy, does everyone else change up that much? That's not been my experience. A song here and there, yeah, but not a whole lot of changes.
#37 - Posted 7/5/07 @4:47PM by SnowDoggy [contact]

Depends on the act I guess Deb. I know some hard rock acts like Pearl Jam and The Black Crows play completely different sets.

Rush's closest counterpart - Dream Theatre - don't mix up the entire show, for instance they will open with the same song every night, but the rest of the set is varied.

As far as I know there is one band left that plays a note for note identical show every night.
#38 - Posted 7/5/07 @5:25PM by skl183 [contact]

They have been playing so many songs from GUP ever since 2004 when Between The Wheels was unearthed. This is the second tour that the album gets 2 tracks played.

For a record that they supposedley hated (along with Presto according to the Visions book), they certainly play a lot of the songs live 23 years after its release.

In 2009, if they tour GUP will turn 25. They could unearth another track like The Body Electric or Enemy Within. Both were released as videos/singles and I'd die to hear either one live. Thats if they release an album in 2009.
#39 - Posted 7/5/07 @5:34PM by SnowDoggy [contact]

Presto is my favorite album. They said they hate it? Makes sense I guess - it was the only album ignored on R30.
#40 - Posted 7/5/07 @9:29PM by RushKid [contact]

Neil said The Pass was one of the bands favourites and he gets emotional when playing it. It's a beautiful song

To answer the "static set" question, I think that the band's increasing use of video footage (thanx Ged's bro) gives them the impression that they really need to stick to a predetermined course. While I may like the idea of really varied sets, what the hell...it's worked for Rush (and Yes and others) for a long time...

So, without "Summertime Blues" OR "Distant Early Warning", what could REALISTICALLY go there? (NOT "The Camera Eye." I love it and all, but I'm OK with 4/7 of Moving Pictures in the set already.) Given that the themes of this album, and tour, are 1) religious, and 2) political, what makes the most sense? I mean, I'd love "The Pass" or even "Bravado" to go there (looking at the placement within the set). But what do y'all think?

Oh, and one last question. Just something I wonder about, and I hope it comes out sincere and not prickish. But is anyone GENUINELY "disappointed" when songs like Necromancer or Lamneth don't make a set? Don't get me wrong, in an ideal world...but I know it's no more realistic than a tour featuring a Peart/Rutsey drum duet.

See y'all in Denver, Dallas, and San Antonio!
#42 - Posted 7/5/07 @10:23PM by Bravest Face [contact]

They hate Presto (#38), I hadn't heard that before, if that's true :( Presto is one of my favs!
#43 - Posted 7/5/07 @10:41PM by madkinski [contact]

I also think it's preposterous to think they would ever play songs like The Necromancer, In the End, or some other 30 year old obscure track. I cannot belive people even entertain those thoughts.
#44 - Posted 7/5/07 @11:10PM by Scotto [contact]

Hey guys, wow the setlist "debate" continues. I would have not problem with 2 or 3 songs off of Feedback, I'm sure I'm one of the few.

Not a chance for anything of COS except bits of Bastille Day, personally I'd take anything off of Fly By Night except of course Rivendell.

Presto - One of my all time favs, but I have seen it near the bottom of some "fav" lists.

Kenster - Saw your 118 lifetime posts, you crack me up, you have had 118 posts since Monday, hit the vaporizer for me.

#41 How about Different Strings. :) I like that one!
#46 - Posted 7/10/07 @4:39PM by dmorin74 [contact]

I was at the Mohegan Sun show in CT last night. When they started the show Alex played the first riff from limelight, and looked over, and Neil and Geddy weren't on stage yet, so he stopped, they came out, and then he started over. . .with their zany humor it was hard to tell if they botched it by accident or if he meant to do that. Has he done that at any other previous shows that people have seen??? Please comment!

Alright Comment #47 (my favorite number).
Had to peek at the lists put up over the last month.
Live in L.A., going to shows here in Irvine (O.C.) & up to Portland for a weekend of debauchery (visiting old college friends and taking in a show somewhere I've never before)
OK here are my subs...

Chemistry for Digital Man
Marathon for Mission
Faithless for The Larger Bowl
Earthshine for One Little Victory

*I know I'll get skewered for the first one, but as you can see from my username, I love "Chemistry"...been asking for that one since the Signals tour. Can't remember them ever playing it; but I have destroyed aplenty brain cells at shows while in my 20s...
*I know most were releived when they dropped Marathon, but I could listen to that song over and over and over...
*IMO Faithless is one of the most kick ass songs on S&A; didn't like it nearly as much as I do after the first 5 listens though...
*Earthshine rules; good to see Secret Touch though!

These shows are going to be awesome... the clock's a ticking...
#48 - Posted 7/11/07 @6:31AM by ChemistryMan [contact]

Oh I forgot one more...

Bravado for Dreamline, mellow song but would end set 1 well....
#49 - Posted 7/11/07 @6:12PM by Better Beer [contact]

All Yall got it all wrong!!!! Getting rid of SB was killer, but putting a song they did on Vapor trails tour was not the ticket. Lets go with Camera Eye, yall all know thats the one!!!! And Loose Tom Sawyer for Kid Gloves And Loose Limelight for Analog Kid . Then they might aswell do Chemistry then into the already on setlist, Digital Man .
#50 - Posted 7/12/07 @4:07AM by ChemistryMan [contact]

Better Beer,
I'm a little confused...
They put Distant Early Warning in for SB ; it's from Grace Under Pressure, not VT... and the last sentence lost me...
I'm ChemistryMan, not Digital Man, but maybe you were referring to the song.... ???

I researched it last night, and off:
link
it can be deduced that "Chemistry" was played for the first ~80% of the Signals tour, my first show. I went to the Feb 14 or 15 show at Long Beach, and apparently it was dropped in May. DAMN I have no recollection of them playing that song... I had a banner reading, "RUSH... our kind of Chemistry", that security hassled me about.
I think the massive quantities of vodka & pineapple soda ( a High School staple) I embibed that night, must have been at work!!! freakin' lush
#51 - Posted 7/13/07 @2:16AM by GreeneWolfe [contact]

I personally love the S&A songs live. To me they were unexpectedly the highlights, especially "The Way The Wind Blows" which is becoming EPIC! I think however that they should can "Spindrift". I just don't think it works live very well IMO. Replace it with "Faithless", or "The Good News First". Also, They should replace "Secret Touch" and "One "Little Victory" (which sucks as a encore!). Don't get me wrong, I love "Vapor Trails", but to me there are better songs off the album to play such as the title track and "Peaceable Kingdom".....Anyway, I am not complaining. I thought it was a great show and I am looking forward to seeing the BOYS in TORONTO!!!
#52 - Posted 7/16/07 @6:51PM by Better Beer [contact]

ChemistryMan,
Sorry for the confusion, I meant why did they swicth SB for a song they Played on The Vapor Trails Tour : DEW
I was just wishing that they would play something cpmpletely different . I would have liked to see The Anolog Kid go through Chemistry and come out a Digital Man.I know they played Chemistry alot on the sigals tour , but hell that was a long time ago. They played DEW on VT Tour and Between the Wheels on R30 tour. All recent tours and something we have seen a million times.New Tour new songs!! Please!!! And Of coarse all of S&A are Killer!! Why ? Because they are NEW!!!!!! haha thanks man sorry for the confusion It must have been me this time with the vodka pinapple.

Saw them at Jones beach when I went back to see friends as I lived on LI for 21years.. I Now have FRONT ROW seats this year at red rocks which is 15 minutes from my house in Littleton, I'm disabled...

Remove summer time blues - one little victory & secret touch. Me I'm easy I like Rus. Period but Keep distant early Warning in SB's place & add vital signs OR Fly by night OR Force 10 - Jeez there are just so many!!!! I Lke the new CD but IMHO I'd cut 2 songs from it, from the set but KEEP Working them angels...

Psyched for Red Rocks. Which is AGAIN the show of the Year there as I was told when I had lunch there, by a guard as we were leaving and they were getting ready to toss visitors as john mayer?? Ugh, was playing that night..

I Saw Rush last time at Red Rocks on the 30th tour but sat at the top as Red Rocks only has 2 disabled seatin areas. The very top OR the First Row :) That's me. BTW The very top IS Still Excellent in terms of hearing, Excellent!!!! anyone who's been to RR knows this also..

Saw them front row last night, Alex's side. That set was perfect. period.
#55 - Posted 8/3/07 @2:58PM by weirdalok [contact]

And no 2112? just kill me now
#56 - Posted 8/7/07 @6:59PM by Islander67 [contact]

Everything is Good with me as it is a Sweet set list...

Everyone has faves as I Do to & would love to hear some songs also but I'd permanetly remove summertime blues from the set. The guys must really love it as they still play it, IMHO Distant Early Warning. IS Awesome!!!!! but if they wanna play a song from feedback - sb's is EH, Crossroads is better...

Jinx off & Here's to Hearing DIW at Red Rocks...

#57 - Posted 11/18/07 @2:52PM by thedigitalman [contact]

for the 2008 part of the tour, they should put a bunch of songs in there that havent been played live yet. There are so many good songs that theyve never played live like:

Chain Lightning
Face Up
Losing It
Different Strings
Open Secrets
Second Nature
Carve Away the Stone
And some new S&A Stuff like Faithless, We Hold on, Bravest Face or Good News First
#58 - Posted 11/29/07 @6:50PM by starman359 [contact]

So, once again the rumors are driving everyone (including myself) insane. If (and I mean IF) they go back on tour there should be group parties. I've met people from other groups I'm in and it always turns out to be alot of fun.
Anyhow, just something for everyone to think about.
cya'll on the road
