Rush Snakes & Arrows TourUPDATE - 6/29@3:25PM: Gross Sales: $505,255
Attendance: 8,998
Capacity: 15,949

UPDATE - 6/16@2:20PM: Check out the user reviews of the show here.

UPDATE - 6/15@7:13AM: More YouTube bootleg vids here (SPOILER - includes opening video), here (SPOILER) and here (SPOILER).

UPDATE - 6/14@10:29PM: Reader Chris M found another bootleg video on YouTube. Watch it here (SPOILER). And the Digital Rush Experience has now cataloged the first available recording from the Snakes & Arrows tour, Overnight Delivery. This audience recording is now up on dimeadozen at this link. Also, a bunch of images are now uploaded in the tour gallery for the Atlanta show (yes- its' fixed now).

UPDATE - 6/14@5:44PM: I've been able to get most things up and running, but the one thing that will require some time is the tour photo upload feature. :( So for now I've had to take that down. Very sorry about that. I'll try and get it resolved asap.

UPDATE - 6/14@3:24PM: *** SPOILER UPDATE 6 *** Power Windows has a nice summary of the setlist and a list of several items of note over on his site. I've included them here below the fold as well.

UPDATE - 6/14@2:38PM: Readers Digital Rush Experience and Dave S let me know that an audience recording of the Atlanta show is now up on dimeadozen at this link.

UPDATE - 6/14@1:03PM: I've moved the site to a bigger/faster server and so far it seems to be working like a charm except for a few minor things (the calendar for instance). Hopefully this will prevent any future crashes. Thanks for all the words of encouragement.

If you saw the show, don't forget to post your review in the tour section (as well as in this post if you like). Also, if you have any photos, upload them here.

----- snip -----

UPDATE - 6/14@12:23PM: There are a bunch of pro-shot pics up at AccessAtlanta.com. Thanks profit of doom and gttim for the heads up.

UPDATE - 6/14@9:54AM: You've probably noticed that althought the site is up, it's still running slow. I'm going to try a few things to alleviate this. In the meantime I'll need to shutdown comments again. Hopefully it won't be for more than an hour or so.

UPDATE - 6/14@8:23AM: Thanks to reader gttim we now have our first bootleg video from last night's show. It's Far Cry and you can check it out here (SPOILER).

UPDATE - 6/14@6:20AM: I just added several more SPOILER updates below the fold; just miscellaneous observations from reader Justin about the show.

UPDATE - 6/14@5:25AM: Everything is back up for now (fingers crossed).

UPDATE - 6/13@11:07PM: Before I sign off for the evening I just wanted to give an update as to the status of the site. I'm going to leave this page up overnight and hopefully have the regular site up tomorrow morning. The amount of traffic I was pulling in totally took me by surprise and I apologize for the site being down. I'll do whatever it takes to get things back up and running. And finally, many thanks to reader Justin for texting me all the updates throughout the evening!

UPDATE - 6/13@10:57PM: *** SPOILER UPDATE 4 *** Updates regarding encore below the fold.

UPDATE - 6/13@10:36PM: *** SPOILER UPDATE 3 *** Updates up through end of regular set below the fold.

UPDATE - 6/13@10:23PM: *** SPOILER UPDATE 2 *** The setlist as revealed earlier today has been confirmed up through the drum solo in the second set. For more details on the setlist and the opening videos read below the fold.

UPDATE - 6/13@8:09PM: *** SPOILER UPDATE 1 *** Updates below the fold; first 3 songs plus other details.

UPDATE - 6/13@7:55PM: ATTENTION: I had to shut down comments temporarily to give my server a break... you guys are killing it! :) I will have them back up asap.

UPDATE - 6/13@7:36PM: There's now a pre-show picture of the stage setup in the gallery.

The time is now again - time for a Rush tour! Tonight is opening night for the Rush Snakes & Arrows tour at the HiFi Buys Amphitheatre in Atlanta, Georgia. For those of you who want to know, the entire rehearsal setlist has been posted to the net and can be seen in this post (SPOILER). I will be using this thread to post updates throughout the evening and will be sure to keep any and all spoiler information hidden. If you get any photos from tonight's show (or pre-show activities), please upload them here. To view photos from the show go here (there's nothing there yet as of this post). Also, once the show commences, you'll notice that under the Atlanta show in the tour section a new comments thread under the discuss heading for show reviews will magically appear. If you're attending the show please post your opinions/experiences in that thread when you get the chance.

A couple of other related items ...

Reader Mountaineerfan just called HiFI Buys amphitheater and was told that small digital cameras are allowed, just not professional cameras! You can call the venue at 404-443-5000 to check for yourself. Cool.

Jess of the Rush to Fight AIDS project made a last-minute decision to attend the show tonight and asked me to relay that, although she won't have her complete setup onhand, she'd love to meet up with folks from the site and also will take donations. Just check out the latest blog entry on the project's mySpace page for details.

Atlantic put out an official press release on the tour yesterday afternoon.

With all the opening-night excitement I totally forgot that fan presales for the Madision Square Garden show on September 17th began yesterday at 10AM. The presale will run through noon tomorrow and regular sales begin this Saturday at 10AM. Details in this post.

For everyone going to the show tonight ... have fun and be safe! :)

SPOILER UPDATE 6: From Power Windows, a nice little setlist summary:

Based on opening night only...the setlist for this tour is quite a bit more varied than recent tours; 9 of the 13 tracks from the new album are played live (performing this many songs in support of a new album has not been done since the Power Windows tour!), and for the first time ever, "Entre Nous" is played live. In addition, many songs are back after a long rest ("Circumstances" [tuned down a full step], not heard since the Hemispheres tour; "Digital Man" [with a new arrangement, possibly abbreviated] since the Grace Under Pressure warm-up tour, "Witch Hunt" since the Power Windows tour, and "Mission" since the Presto tour). This is only the second tour to not include either "2112" or "La Villa Strangiato" in the setlist (the other time was the Counterparts tour), and it is also worthy to note that "Roll The Bones" is dropped for the first time ever. Keeping score on the songs played: only 5 songs are played from albums released between Moving Pictures and Vapor Trails (only 1 is from the 90's), and not including the drum solo, of the 27 songs played, 17 are from PeW, MP or S&A; that is roughly 2/3 of the concert.

And some items of note:

* The dryers have been replaced by three rotisserie chicken roasters which are as tall as Alex's stacks of H&K amplifiers, and are believed to say "Hen House" across the front of them.

* The opening video begins with a dream sequence with the Alex and Neil, reminiscent of the Jerry Stiller video from R30: Alex wakes up and taps someone sleeping beside him. Neil rolls over, and they both look at each other and yell 'AHHHHHHHHHHH", then after an animated sequence, Alex wakes up and says something to the affect of "What did they do to my food?"...it then cuts to Geddy who is sitting in a chair approached by an old man in a Scottish kilt who speaks with a Scottish accent who tells Geddy he doesn't care how he is feeling, that the show must go on etc, and threatens him with humorous threats IF he doesn't get up and go do the show to which they all ran out. The guy in the Scottish costume is actually Geddy, dressed in make up and wig.

* At the end of the show, another video of Scottish Geddy plays, where he tells people to go home because he wants to get back to eating his chicken.

* The video intro for the second set is all Alex in rare, comical form, playing several characters on the Snakes and Arrows Leela board. The board shifts around the screen and highlights certain lines to which Alex pops up and executes typical Alex rants.

* There is a video of Bob & Doug McKenzie to introduce The Larger Bowl.

* There is a South Park video intro to Tom Sawyer; during the video, the South Park characters begin playing Tom Sawyer but Cartman sings the wrong lyrics, "I traveled down the river with a black guy", which leads to an argument about the lyrics revolving around one of them saying that he's actually read the book and that's how the story goes, but the other quickly corrects him saying "that was Huckleberry Finn". Cartman then says "I'm Geddy LEE and I can sing it however I want". They then agree to start again to "get it right" and count off the beginning where Rush takes over and plays.

* During "A Passage To Bangkok", a video plays showing footage of far east trains, poppy fields, marijuana plants and many other scenes that relate to the song lyrics.

* Alex plays a mandola mounted on an Omega stand during "Workin' Them Angels"

* "Digital Man" may have been abbreviated, missing the first "He's got a force field" lyric.

SPOILER UPDATE 5: Here are some random observations from reader Justin:

- very first song, alex starting playing but the other guys weren't ready yet... he rang out the first few notes til they got set then restarted limelight
- Alex used omega stand during Entre Nous for 12 string acoustic, also used during Workin' them angels for whatever instrument he does the solo with, then again during TWTWB i think....
- They seemed a little sluggish at first, or maybe just neil... but i can def. understand that.. by the time Entre Nous rolled around they were into it full tilt
- Alex really hated his guitar tech it seemed like at the beginning of between the wheels... neil and ged kept repeating the beginning but then ged started the lyrics and Alex's guitar still wasn't fixed.... finally they got it and he picked up wherever they were in the song... he GLARED at his tech a few times after that during BTW.
- The drum solo was COMPLETELY changed and it felt like it was shorter than the previous two versions,,, did anyone else get that feeling?
- I did notice Geddy could not sing the high parts of songs like Circumstances and Bangkok, and instead they must have had them tuned down to be easier to sing..
- Neil dropped a couple of sticks but picked right up where he left off, missed the big toss up in the air during YYZ.
- Neil uses the back kit ONLY ONCE...for the solo
- It looked like Al had a wammy bar added onto a Les Paul... isn't that unusual? Maybe not... i'm not very knowledgeable on that topic. But he used that guitar alot. It looked like he used a PRS, Les Paul w/ wammy, and maybe one or two other LPs and thats it, plus a 12 string acoustic and that odd stringed instrument for Working them angels

SPOILER UPDATE 4: The encore was just as advertised and there was a closing video featuring Geddy. Here's the entire setlist - 27 songs total plus the drum solo. There was no mystery song at the end of the first set, but otherwise the rumors from earlier today hold true.

Set 1:

Video Intro (features all three band members and Alex and Neil waking up in bed together)

Limelight
Digital Man
Entre Nous
Mission
Freewill
The Main Monkey Business
The Larger Bowl (Bob & Doug video intro)
Secret Touch
Circumstances
Between The Wheels
Dreamline

Intermission

Set 2:

Video Intro (features Alex)

Far Cry
Workin' Them Angels
Armor And Sword
Spindrift
The Way The Wind Blows
Subdivisions
Natural Science
Witch Hunt
MalNar
Drum Solo
Hope
Summertime Blues
The Spirit Of Radio
Tom Sawyer (South Park video intro)

Encore:

One Little Victory
A Passage to Bangkok
YYZ

Video outro (features Geddy)

SPOILER UPDATE 3: The drum solo is totally new and there's a South Park video intro to Tom Sawyer.

SPOILER UPDATE 2: The opening video featured all three band members and Alex and Neil waking up in bed together?! :) The video opening up the 2nd set features Alex. There's a Bob & Doug McKenzie video intro to The Larger Bowl.

SPOILER UPDATE 1: Geddy Lee has rotisary chicken roasters instead of dryers. Alex is using a Les Paul fitted with a wammy bar. The first 3 songs are indeed Limelight, Digital Man and Entre Nous.

This might be the slowest moving day in the history of the world....is it time to leave for the venue yet?

See everyone tonight. Stop by Section 102, Row K (on the aisle) and say hi to Mr. & Mrs. Profit of Doom.

I can't believe it. Another Rush tour is upon it. There is no way I would have thought 16 years ago, when I first saw Rush during the Roll The Bones tour, that I would be seeing them today and in support of one of the best albums of their career. It sucks I have to wait until August 30 to see them here in Cleveland but hopefully I'll get a copy of a one of the shows on bootleg.

Did anyone catch the press release info stating 'Snakes and Ladders'?

Profit of doom...... Have a good time for all of us!

Damn, I cant believe the day has come!
#9 - Posted 6/13/07 @3:31PM by Scotto [contact]

Spindrifter - I caught that, how many times is the new music going to be called "Snakes & Ladders"?? You would think the record company Atlantic would get it right. Sheesh.

I went to Opening Night for Presto in Greenville SC. RUSH fans hanging out about four hours before the show. The floor was festival seating.

It was fun to see banners and such and knowing you were at the first show.
#13 - Posted 6/13/07 @3:41PM by jbfenderjazz [contact]

Well, Charlotte's #4 and the boys will be nice and warmed up. I do slightly envy those who will see the opener though. ENJOY!!!

I am excited and I am not even going to the show tonight, of course mine is only 5 days away, so that may have something to do with it!! Can't wait to hear some reports of tonight!
#15 - Posted 6/13/07 @3:46PM by profit of doom [contact]

Thanks all. I will have a green apple (since I don't smoke the red ones) and Macallan for everyone missing out tonight...

Pictures tomorrow...and then I'll see you at Charlotte, Raleigh and NYC!

Rawk on...

I too am feeling the buzz of excitement even though I will not be there for opening night. But, to celebrate with all of you lucky ones, I will be sure to play some Rush and imbibe in a tasty beverage this evening (Scotch would be appropriate, I think. Although I cannot afford the Macallan, I have one I like :) ). Enjoy the show! Only 9 more days for me!!!

Add to the camera rule. You can also bring in a disposable camera as well. I just called to confirm before worrying about taking my digital camera.
#21 - Posted 6/13/07 @5:13PM by max o'webster [contact]

Im shitting myself and I'm about 18,000 miles away in rainy England. Can we talk about the set list in this box. American logic has stumped me and there are people clapping on the TV.
#22 - Posted 6/13/07 @5:17PM by debbie [contact]

Easy, Max, easy. *laugh* Um, not sure about the set list. I'd THINK so, since it's about opening night. I don't think anyone would be reading this if they didn't want to know about the show, though, but don't take my word for it.
#23 - Posted 6/13/07 @5:22PM by Bravest Face [contact]

This thread is okay for setlist discussion. There is another one going on right now for those who don't want to know the setlist.

I have decided to try to make everyone happy, yeah right!! My show on Friday will consist of all of the songs from the setlist, but I won't necessarily play them in the order of the setlist, and I will also throw in some other requested songs as well! :)
#24 - Posted 6/13/07 @5:37PM by unktehila [contact]

yup.... probably sOup time, right? then wine, Neil zen and warmup, acoustic pluckings.
#25 - Posted 6/13/07 @5:38PM by max o'webster [contact]

I've seen every Rush tour in Europe since signals. the great news is of the top of my head I've never seen Natural Science , circumstances, the entire Bangkok, Entre Nous and of course S&A so this is great news for me. I'm not sure what hope is doing stranded on it's own or the feedback track, but so much faith in their new album ... and fully justified... The greatest band ever. Roll on October
#26 - Posted 6/13/07 @5:45PM by Bravest Face [contact]

Max, you haven't seen Natural Science? They played it on T4E and VT tours I know, unless they left it off on the shows you attended. It is an absolute awesome song live!!!
#27 - Posted 6/13/07 @5:50PM by max o'webster [contact]

I know its my favourite on Different Stages. I played the B side of waves tonight in anticipation. Will be a highlight the way between the wheels was on R30.
#28 - Posted 6/13/07 @6:12PM by Bravest Face [contact]

Maybe I am imagining this, but I have heard more songs from the setlist on rushradio.org than I would have thought normal, older songs, not so much from S&A though, hmmm....
#29 - Posted 6/13/07 @6:22PM by Bacon [contact]

What time does the show start at?
#30 - Posted 6/13/07 @6:28PM by max o'webster [contact]

25'o'clock and on that bombshell goodnight and I look forward to reading all the reports from my North American cousins.

I'm sorta jealous I have to wait until Aug 23rd in Kansas City. URG!

Anyhow be safe and enjoy!!
#36 - Posted 6/13/07 @6:39PM by Bravest Face [contact]

Necro, I may be, I have been having some computer issues at home, (in case you have noticed I have not been on as much in the evening in the last few days). I have a guy accessing my computer at home right now checking some things out, if it goes okay, then I should be on. I hope to be.
#37 - Posted 6/13/07 @6:40PM by Bravest Face [contact]

I have to go now, but hope to be on later.

#39 - Posted 6/13/07 @6:45PM by ritvt2112 [contact]

wish everyone a great rush exprince this year i think its going to be one of the best shows in a long time ive seen them since every tour since 82
#40 - Posted 6/13/07 @6:46PM by RushKid [contact]

Oh well, there's alwasy the photo section. I was surprised at the list that was put out. For my opening night "guess" I based it more around the sound of Geddy's voice on S&A(the highest he goes is the "Ohhhhh" in Far Cry). To see all these high pitch wonders in there like Passage, parts of Mission, some of Tom Sawyer, and even parts of Between the Wheels. When my tour date rolls around, I'll be able to hear it in action. They should through in Anthem too to see how high Ged can really go....:)

Enjoy the show!

Am thinking that right about now, my time (3: )the gates are opening for all of the kids to enter 'Rushland', shirts are being sold, programs are being grabbed, the beers are being poured, yet, someone is passed out in the parking lot and the bathrooms are clean, or were!

Neil is reading a book or awaking from his nap and putting on his dance shoes for pre-show warm up, Ged just made some major changes to his lineup and Al is washing his feet from stomping on the grapes.

'The air is charged - a humid, motionless mass
The crowds and the cameras,
The cars full of spectators pass
Excitement so thick - you could cut it with a knife
Technology - high, on the leading edge of life

The earth beneath us starts to tremble
With the spreading of a low black cloud
A thunderous roar shakes the air
Like the whole world exploding

Scorching blast of golden fire
As it slowly leaves the ground
Tears away with a mighty force
The air is shattered by the awesome sound

Like a pillar of cloud, the smoke lingers
High in the air
In fascination - with the eyes of the world
We stare....'

Are we ready to Ruuuuuuuuuush-mble?

I'm getting excited and I'm 3,000 miles away from the concert. It must have something to do with the "Brotherhood of Man/Rush".
#49 - Posted 6/13/07 @7:09PM by Rushfanatic550 [contact]

Seems so long since Vapor Trails tour. It's hard to remember the excitement I had that night in November?

I'm not even in Atlanta and I'm excited for them.

I don't think I've ever been that way on a Rush tour?

Seems so long ago.

Thanks, Ed. The lite version of the site was a great idea whilst the server was clogged. Seems like the first concert was a success, even with a few minor technical glitches. I hope we have some photos to see soon. :)

After reading the fifth "spoiler" everything seemed like it have been like a big mess.. Hope they've fixed it for their 60th concert (Stockholm) where I'm attending!

Damn.. With mistakes in the intro of the very first song and in Between the Wheels. :( Some of the most important song IMO!

Think they've maybe been a bit in a bad mood after the show. I would have been that!

LOL, Ed! I guess that's one way of looking at it. I was horrified for a while fearing you may have been hacked or something! ;)

I will be at the west palm show tomorrow night second row center stage with my 11 year old son (first rush show for him),he's an unbelievable guitarist for his age and he love alex. We plan on jumping the first row to get up to the stage... also plan on taking photos so in a couple days I will upload them for everyone... my son made a sign asking alex for a pick, hopefully we'll get one. We've both been freaking out for the past week with excitement, but it's now 6.35 am thurs. morning and I still have jitters from anticipation... LIT UP WITH ANTICIPATION, WE ARRIVE AT THE CONCERT HALL...... can not wait for entre nous, circumstances and BANKOK BABY!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I got several emails last night saying we got hijacked...been standing up against the wall motherf@@kers since eight o'clock last night...finally had to have a leak so I just ran.

Thanks for saving the junkie patrol Ed!!! ;D

Must have been a stone groove...no one from the show made it to a pooter last night...good sign I suppose. Everyone is emotionally spent and not awake yet...think I'll just sit here at the bar and have a healthy juice. Well, maybe I'll put just a little vodka in it.

A crappy little video of Far Cry, until security started shinning his flashlight in my face. It is just along shot of the stage with a little pocket camera video function.

My first Rush show was great! The only bad parts were:

1. Security beeoytch at the gate wouldn't let me bring my camera in ever after I told her I called and was told it was ok. I hope the other venues have their crap together for those going to other shows!

2. The one time I set my program down the dumb@$$ behind me knocked his beer over so a corner of my program got wet and is a little messed up. Note to self-don't buy a program until the end of the show!!!
#72 - Posted 6/14/07 @8:23AM by Bravest Face [contact]

YEAH!! Site back up!!

Sounds like there were some gliches according to the final spoiler but two thoughts on that:

1. Probably to be expected with the first show, I mean it has almost been 3 years, even with rehearsing, the first night is going to have a few

2. Likely 90 something percent of people there probably didn't even notice most of these. It takes Rush fanatics like us to notice little minor things. To be honest, I will be so excited and thrilled just to be there, I probably won't notice many mistakes myself, but you know there are always going to be a few, not even Rush is perfect! Although they are damn near close! ;)
#73 - Posted 6/14/07 @8:53AM by Pat [contact]

Welcome back, Ed. 5:25 AM!? What, did you stay up all night working on the site? Thanks a million.

As for the people who thought they could bring cameras into the show: C'mon. We're all Rush fans here. You really thought Rush would permit this (no matter what the minimum-wage high-school girl said when you called the venue)? You ever read anything Neil Peart has written on the subject? I'm not trying to antagonize, just bring us back to reality.
#74 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:04AM by Jaybird [contact]

>

I used to buy it from Tthe Backstage Club and it would get to me before the show.

Do they still do that? Of course, I would imagine it's hard to get it before the opening week.
#75 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:24AM by theanalogkid [contact]

Rush is the best and I'm happy just to get another chance to see them live......but.....

Just nitpicking:

9 songs from one record is just too many. I love the new record, but I wouldn't want to hear 80% of any Rush record. There's too much material from 33 years (and I know they want to play the new songs)to have 9 songs from any one record.

I would remove 4 of the new songs: Workin Them Angels, The Larger Bowl, The Way the Wind Blows and MalNar and replace them with either an instrumental medley from early on (Fountain of Lamneth-Cygnus Pt. 1-Hemispheres) or any 4 of the following songs:

Red Barchetta
Vital Signs
Distant Early Warning
Afterimage
The Body Electric
Kid Gloves
Grand Designs
Marathon
Territories
Mystic Rhythms
Time Stand Still
Chain Lightning
Superconductor
Available Light
The Big Wheel
Alien Shore
Leave That Thing Alone
Earthshine
Freeze

There. The nits have been picked. Nuff said.

Might the "Les Paul w/ a whammy bar" be Alex's Howard Robert Fusion?
#77 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:31AM by Weinrib Rocks [contact]

Long-time lurker, first-time poster. I'll agree with theanalogkid above -- too much new. But actually the new stuff in general sounded better than the old stuff. I was at the show last nite, and here are a buncha comments.

:: The Limelight "mess up" was actually kinda cool -- Alex played the first 5-note run up to the first chord, realized that he probably shouldn't have started, and held the chord, arm straight up in a Pete Townsend pose, until the other guys were ready, and then played on. It almost seemed natural. Almost.

:: Mission was an interesting addition to the set. I happen to really dig it, but it didn't seem to fit in. Alex seemed bored.

:: Between the Wheels: either a cord came loose, a pedal wasn't pushed, or something...but Alex couldn't be heard until the vocals started.

:: Vocals were kinda rough in the first set -- he didn't even attempt the high notes in Limelight: "all the world's indeed a STAGE", and instead knocked the vocal line down.

:: adding on to the above, while I LOVE Circumstances, and was psyched to hear Geddy intro it -- " I think this one's from Hemispheres" -- they shouldn't have tried it. They lowered the key about 3 or 4 semitones, and Geddy *still* couldn't pull off the chorus.

:: The second set was much crisper, cleaner, better-sounding than the first. Geddy's voice sounded warmed up, the guitar wasn't as overpowering, and they clicked. The first three from S&A -- Far Cry, Workin' Them Angels, Armor and Sword -- sounded fantastic. Really tight, well-mixed. A typical issue I've had with Rush concerts since Counterparts is the over-prevalence of the guitar sound...so much of what makes Rush great is dynamics, and when the guitar washes everything out, it doesn't sound nearly as good. This was the case in the first set, but either it was fixed between sets, or mine ears deceived me.

:: South Park intro to Tom Sawyer was hysterical. "Modern day warrior, today's Tom Sawyer, he floated on a raft on a river with a black guy"

:: in general, I was disappointed by the staging/video. They definitely set the bar way too high, but since the Presto tour (my first), they've put a TON of effort into cool video projections, lights, and other visual aspects of the show. This one, not so much. Especially in the first set, where the three video screens (in addition to the two huge venue screens to either side of the stage) showed what I can best describe as "cool computer animation from the 80's." Nothing really song-related for the most part. They brought out the green lasers for Dreamline and a few others, but it was pretty tame in comparison to past shows. Maybe because it was an oudoor venue.

:: The rotisserie chicken ovens weren't used as props. I was expecting someone to go in there and take out a chicken or something, like they did with the dryers last time 'round.

:: drum solo was about 60-70% new, with some nice new MIDI-triggered drums on the back of the kit.

I may seem harsh, but man, they've set the bar high for me, so I feel I need to be critical.

All in all, a really great show. From the 2nd set on to the end, they were ON.

:: Oh, one more thing. Limelight on bagpipes. Awww yeeeeah!

The show was by far the baest yet.It was really exciting to see them nervously de-flower their new songs to the hungry ATL crowd. The setlist was great, and it seemed like the 3 hr show went by sooo fast. I must say, I have never heard Geddy hit the high notes so well. There was no question about it..... He went for the high ones, and scored every time!!! Neil's solo was brand new, completetly rearranged and promises to once again blow everyones minds!! Here's a tease (There's a little mechanincal robotic theme, and then he swithes to a more fluid tribal african theme..... Very different, and very cool!) That's all I'll say about that. The only strange thing I noticed was during Digital Man.... It was played very different. I noticed Neil seemed to struggle a bit, and they extended the jam on it too. All in all it was a phenominal show. And I promise you will not leave let down by any means.... This show really outdid R30... I really hope they make a DVD of this tour. This on will live with me forever.

Yah Mon!!!

I thought the show totally smoked. Security was EXTREMELY lax, as someone said, you could've walked in with a grill and no one would've said anything. If that show wasn't taped, then I'm the main monkey business' uncle! When will it surface?... (There was a claim of a tape for the first show on another site, and his words were, "Just be patient.)
My only complaints: Damn, everything was expensive! Shirts were $30, 24 oz. beers were TEN BUCKS, and that nifty little R30 drum set was 30k. (Ok, maybe nothing you can do about a monster drum set that is one of maybe 100 (????). But those t-shirt and beer prices....sheesh! And why not, since the lines were long EVERYWHERE for food, drink, and items.)
Now the good: Loved the setlist. Neil really is incredible, even more so live and in-your-face. The pre-show partying was great. Everyone eating, drinking and having a good time. The folks in Atlanta did a great job of helping out and organizing, imho. (Don't know how others' experiences were there, but we got friendly help on many occasions throughout the night.)
I'm going to be RUSHing all day long, then tonight I'm off to see the Steve Miller Band in Chattanooga. What a week!

Just got a note from pwrgirl...she says hi and wonders why for some reason she can't post on the board!!! heh. She reports the show was "Mindblowing" and cannot imagine how any show could be any better!!! She says the opening vid was hilarious...and the additional vids for various songs were very cool as well. Loved Witch Hunt and thought that it was a highlight.

Did Alex used a bouzouki for the solo in workin them angels???
#86 - Posted 6/14/07 @10:21AM by One humanoid escapee [contact]

Some song observations:

The new stuff came off suprisingly well.

I believe that Digital Man was abbreviated - they omitted the first "He's got a force field..." that occurs just prior to the guitar solo, but did play that section when it repeats at the end of the song.

The Main Monkey Business had various video clips of monkeys doing funny things. I recognize many of the clips from old movies.

Alex plays a mandola (mounted on an Omega stand) on Working Them Angels.

The drum solo appeared to be at least 75% new material.

Passage to Bangkok was accompanied by video footage of far east trains, poppy fields, marijuana plats and many other scenes that relate to the song lyrics.

I believe a bouzouki is a type of mandola
#89 - Posted 6/14/07 @10:28AM by One humanoid escapee [contact]

Some video observations:

The opening video where Alex wakes up is reminiscent of the Jerry Stiller intro. After an animated sequence, Alex wakes up and says something to the affect of "What did I eat?" or "What did they do to my food?" He then reaches over taps someone next to him and says "Honey", causing everyone to think it is wife next to him in bed, but Neil pops up instead (and he's wearing his drumming hat). The guys are apparently in a trailer home. The video then focuses on Geddy who is at the kitchen table being scolded by a guy in a Scottish costume and with a Scottish accent - this turns out to be Geddy in costume. This Scottish character (Geddy) reappears at the end of the show in a closing video segment.

The South Park characters argue about the lyrics to Tom Sawyer after Cartman sings something like "I traveled down the river with a black guy". The argument revolves around one of them saying that he's actually read the book and that's how the story goes, but the other quickly corrects him saying "that was Huckleberry Finn". They then agree to start again and "get it right" and count off the beginning where Rush takes over and plays.

#108 - Posted 6/14/07 @12:34PM by SnowDoggy [contact]

The moment of truth is the next gig. Will our heros finally change their sets from night to night? I mean even just alternating one or two songs a show would work for me.

And now that I've had a day to digest the setlist I must say that I am a little bummed about it.

We didn't need "Subdivisions" & "Bewteen the Wheels" again. And 9 songs from S&A is way to much. They didn't play 9 from T4E or VT

And if they ARE going to play all three instrmentals, why would they pick YYZ as the closer(again! - same as CP Tour)?

In my dream world these songs GO:
Digital Man - this is probably the WORST song off Signals. Who came up with this one?
Entre Nous - 3 from PW is plenty
Subdivisions
Armor and Sword(just not feelin' this one)
Between the Wheels
MalNar
YYZ

Replaced by:
2112
In The End
Closer to the Heart
Fly By Night
*Anything from Presto* - why is this album always ignored?
The Camera Eye - what else?

I may be the only one that thinks the "mess up" on the intro to Limelight was intentional. The video intro had JUST finished telling Geddy to "wipe that chicken off your face and get out there." So Alex and Neil are onstage, Alex plays the first few notes of Limelight and waits...and then Geddy runs onstage wiping his mouth with a napkin. I am pretty sure this was a deliberate gag, though perhaps the timing was a bit off. We'll see if it happens again at the next show...

> Will our heros finally change their sets from night to night?

No way. I bet the setlist stays the same for the entire tour.
#128 - Posted 6/14/07 @1:46PM by Bonz [contact]

I was at opening night and I thought the Boys played very well. I've been to 40+ shows, but this was my first opening night. I was very impressed how well they played the new material and I could have easily have gone for a couple of more...especially We Hold On to end the night. Setlist are always debatable, but the only certain throw away for me was Summertime Blues. Feedback, which I liked, should have stayed linked to the R30 tour and no more.
#129 - Posted 6/14/07 @1:46PM by SnowDoggy [contact]

I know it will Scott. Just let me "Hold On" to a sliver of hope until it's official.

I don't mean that they turn into a jam band and play a different set every night(which would be GREAT!!!) Just maybe alternate a song or two.

I recall that "Between Sun and Moon" and "Vital Signs" where alternated on the VT Tour

And I really hope that was indeed a mess up on Limelight, and not some lame joke. If Geddy runs on stage every single night with a napkin, so help me God I am waiting in the isles until they are a minute into it so I don't have to see it.
#130 - Posted 6/14/07 @1:52PM by kenster2112@sbcglobal.net [contact]

Hey Bonz They did play "WE HOLD ON"? That's the one song I want to hear LIVE and no setlist included it. WOW> I know you were there, but are you sure? My 40th time in 39 days!

You know, I've been thinking: It would be fantastic to attend the opening show; and if I could've, I would've; but, maybe it'll be worth the wait to see The Boyz after they've polished up the act a bit. Then again, it might make no difference at all; they're quite professional.

And now, I'm off to read the thread!

thanks #138 for that clarification. I freakin' hate typing!
#141 - Posted 6/14/07 @2:25PM by One humanoid escapee [contact]

Kenster - I think you'll be happy with Snakes material they play. I wasn't a big fan of Far Cry, but it was incredible live with great thunderstorm/baby carriage on the dock imagery and even some "circuits blowing" explosions!
#142 - Posted 6/14/07 @2:29PM by 1-2-bucklemyshoe [contact]

I was not at the show but I was just wondering if malnar was extended in any way, or was it simply the 2:17 on the album? For that matter, where there any jams on any of the songs last night?
#143 - Posted 6/14/07 @2:32PM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

damn, ive played the setlist over and over again and although there are some inevitable disappointing omissions,i overall think its going to be a great setlist and great show.i saw that little video of the far cry performance and the light show looked cool.the explosion in far cry was cool too.
#144 - Posted 6/14/07 @2:33PM by One humanoid escapee [contact]

Malnar wasn't significantly extended from what I remember. As usual, many of the songs were fleshed out with a few extra bars of jamming.
#145 - Posted 6/14/07 @2:34PM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

good question, bucklemyshoe.also, for anyone that was there, how did it sound?was it loud?(i think i probably know the answer to that one.)lol
#146 - Posted 6/14/07 @2:35PM by Dave [contact]

I'm gonna do my best to avoid watching any video of the show. I'm sure, however, that my 8 year old son will youtube himself to death before the show. Kids?! He's so excited about his first Rush show. Hope he can handle the volume. I plan on buying him those ear muff things you see at a rifle range but I doubt he'll wear them at the risk of looking like a dork.
#147 - Posted 6/14/07 @2:40PM by One humanoid escapee [contact]

Try using cottonballs - they draw less attention and muffle enough volume to prevent significant hearing damage. I use about 1/2 ball in each ear and can still clearly hear what's going on.
#148 - Posted 6/14/07 @2:46PM by necromancer 2112 [contact]

how did it sound and how were the visuals, one humanoid?
#149 - Posted 6/14/07 @2:48PM by Dave [contact]

Humanoid, is this as effective as ear muffs? I hate sticking things in my kids ears.
#150 - Posted 6/14/07 @2:49PM by Liverpool.78 [contact]

OK. I've seen the set list. Looks fine to me. I've watched the bootleg of Far Cry. Looked fine to me. They had a few glitches, that's okay... it's the opening night. "...there are no mistakes, only new parts."

As long as they reach perfection by Sheffield and Manchester in October, and NOT before, I'll be fine.

I scored 15 songs from the set list. I had Digital Man in the right place as well as Mal Nar, the Drum Solo and Hope. I had A Passage to Bangkok in the right place too. I was also pleased to have picked Entre Nous as a must play. Quite chuffed really. Shame not to have my hopes of seeing The Camera Eye fulfilled, but Natural Science is in there and that more than compensates.
#151 - Posted 6/14/07 @2:50PM by kenster2112@sbcglobal.net [contact]

Cotton Balls! What an awesome idea. A Triumph concert in 1983(Never Surrender) cost 1/8 of the hearing in my left ear. THen I screwed them up at Guns-n-Roses in 92' My left ear rang for two and a half weeks! I would definitely protect any child ears, even if it somewhat funny looking! I'm paying for it now. Light hissing constant in my left ear,Telephone talking only with the right. Save your kids hearing while you can. But, I certainly do not mean style of music, just overall maximum volume. Especially nowadays Ten yearold can afford a 400$ pair of AKG's!
#152 - Posted 6/14/07 @2:53PM by nposter63 [contact]

Wax earplugs always work for me. Muffles a bit of sound out then I loosen them up for the "quiet" songs.

Also, did anyone take pics of the new shirts/hats swag for sale? Would love to see them.
#153 - Posted 6/14/07 @2:53PM by One humanoid escapee [contact]

It was loud - like a normal Rush concert, but these new smaller speakers don't seem to move the same amount of air as the old ones. Or maybe I've just lost that much more hearing as I've gotten older. I remember being 15 at my first Rush show (HYF Tour) - that opening chord on Big Money ripped my face off - doesn't seem to be like that these days.

The new material sounded great live - they made it seem easier than I though it would be. By contrast some of the older material sounded a bit garbled in places (Freewill, Circumstances). As someone said earlier Alex obviously had some technical issues, but the whole show came off very well for opening night.
#154 - Posted 6/14/07 @2:57PM by kenster2112@sbcglobal.net [contact]

Why is there no tour merchandise for sale at Rush.com. I'd rather have a program and t-shirt delivered than have to worry about where to put this giant album replica in a place where it won't get beer on it,or mustard!Seriously, was their new Swag for sale at the Venue? There has to be! Any prices?
#155 - Posted 6/14/07 @2:59PM by One humanoid escapee [contact]

In my opinion, the visuals were superior to the VT & R30 tours. I thought VT had far too much of the abstract digital animation stuff. The visuals related more to the songs this time.

For example: Passage to Bangkok was accompanied by video footage of far east trains, poppy fields, & marijuana plants. There were even some clips from the old Reefer Madness movie.
#156 - Posted 6/14/07 @3:00PM by The Analog Kid [contact]

Who's going to TAMPA?!!!
#157 - Posted 6/14/07 @3:02PM by One humanoid escapee [contact]

They had S&A album-themed red, white and black shirts at $30 and up. Tourbooks were $20. Posters, thongs, caps, Neil's books - the usual stuff.
#158 - Posted 6/14/07 @3:05PM by kenster2112@sbcglobal.net [contact]

For those who went to the show last night and have been to previous Rush shows, did they sound more rusty than usually? If they did, do you think they'll be back on track by the time they get to Tampa? And also...how did the order of songs last night compare to former tours? Were they jammin like old times, or was it too hard to notice since it was opening night?
#164 - Posted 6/14/07 @3:10PM by kenster2112@sbcglobal.net [contact]

#166 - Posted 6/14/07 @3:12PM by One humanoid escapee [contact]

Here's what I remember of the basic $30 t-shirts:
Red - with the Armor & Sword artwork from the album
Black - with the folded hands/snake/arrow artwork
Black - snake/highway/baby scene
White - looked to have sort of a Rush-roadside diner picture

Those are the ones I considered buying - I bought the black one with the folded hands
#167 - Posted 6/14/07 @3:13PM by kenster2112@sbcglobal.net [contact]

Hey,BF yea-thongs for sale at the show last night. Where do you put RUSH on a thong?
#168 - Posted 6/14/07 @3:13PM by One humanoid escapee [contact]

I thought they were a little more rusty on some songs than others, but nothing they can't overcome - even by the next show.

Thanks for the feedback "One humanoid escapee"! Can't wait til Saturday.

Wish they could play some bunny album or Roll the Bones stuff...other than that, the setlist looks good.
#173 - Posted 6/14/07 @3:20PM by One humanoid escapee [contact]

They may have had some sweatshirts but it was hot and the last thing I would have considered buying at the time. I do remember a polo style shirt.
#174 - Posted 6/14/07 @3:23PM by kenster2112@sbcglobal.net [contact]

THanks for all of your feedback. I wish I owned a lear jet and ticketmaster. Know what I mean?
#175 - Posted 6/14/07 @3:28PM by One humanoid escapee [contact]

Analog - I think Dreamline is all you'll get this time unless they do some song swapping. I saw them 6 times on VT and 4 times on R30 and was getting a bit tired of the same old stuff. I think La Villa is the greatest rock instrumental ever and 2112 is what helped get me into Rush in the first place, but I've seen those songs live so many times (and on video). I'll happily trade them this tour for some gems like Circumstances, Digital Man, and Entre Nous which have never been played live during my Rush years.
#176 - Posted 6/14/07 @3:29PM by One humanoid escapee [contact]

Yeah - the convenience fee we pay Ticketmaster is now more than what I paid for my first Rush show.
#177 - Posted 6/14/07 @3:31PM by Bravest Face [contact]

Re #162 - Hya Howf... good to know I'm on par with you. Did you have any songs at the right location in the set list? I had a big grin going when I saw APTB second in the encore, but I had Limelight at COMPLETELY the wrong end.!

They are also selling the 400 page tourbook collection that is on the backstage club website at the gigs for $90 ($10 cheeper than the web) and if you buy it, they throw in a free Rush totebag...

Mens t-shirts were $30
Mens golf collared shirt was $45
Womans t-shirts and tanktops were $40
Tourbook was $20

I spent a nice $245 last night at the merch table, and then another $10 on a lot shirt as I waited in traffic for an hour to get out of that place.

how was armor and sword?
#193 - Posted 6/14/07 @4:32PM by One humanoid escapee [contact]

Armor & Sword seemed to be one of the tougher ones for the casual fans to follow - you can always spot those people. The casual fans were also kind of luke-warm about The Main Monkey Business, but started paying attention again when they began running funny monkey video clips on the screens.

Of the new stuff, those 2 seem like they would be the hardest to pull off. The boys nailed TMMB even with Alex switching back and forth between acoustic and electric. Armor wasn't perfect, but there were no major hiccups.

I did say last night that I was shitting myself from 28,000,000 miles away in the UK. I should have said

"SOILER ALERT"

Personally delighted, loads of stuff off the superb S&A, and as a veteran of the European Campaigns (signals was the first) there a few really juicy things that us Brits heve not seen live.
#196 - Posted 6/14/07 @5:28PM by SnowDoggy [contact]

maybe they'll drop the songs that didn't work last night in the setlist (One Little Vicotry/Between the Wheels)? I've never seen BTW live, but OLV is always drawn out. Its Far Cry's time to shine. Substitute in Earthshine and The Body Electric instead.
#199 - Posted 6/14/07 @5:42PM by Pwrgirl [contact]

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm just silly and goofy today! WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!

I think that some here are a bit spoiled by RUSH. This is my first RUSH experience, but I think some expect an almost absurd perfection from these guys. Yes, they hold the bar REAL high, but it's impossible for anyone to pull off a show like I saw last night, and blow people out of their shoes like they did me! I've seen many concerts in my day, but NOTHING compares to this. Nothing.

The whole time, I had a goofy smile on my face. And I wasn't the only one! I saw young, middle aged, and old there just loving the show.

The first set was about 95 percent perfect! They seemed to be trying to get their footing, but HEY! It was STILL completely AWESOME! But the second set...WHOA! Talk about blowing my freaking MIND! INCREDIBLE! Brilliant, is all I can say. Everyone was standing during the second set because it JUST DIDN'T LET UP!

(Am I upper casing too much?? LOL! Just for effect boys!)

Speaking of effects...the videos for the new stuff is so INCREDIBLE. Just wonderful. ARMOR AND SWORD! The video for this is so COOL guys! Loved the images of a man...in an armor...slowly walking towards you on a desolate road. Complete synergy with what they were playing. THE WAY THE WIND BLOWS...I swear, during a part where they show trees being blown down, the wind in the venue picked up! I was like, "WTF! Did RUSH do that?" LMAO! I kept hitting my son with my elbow so much throughout the show, I'm sure he's bruised by now! LOL!

I have so much more...but I'm worried that I'll be spoiling it for you all. I don't want to do that. The set list? All I can say is, for someone who doesn't know half their music, except S & A, and PERM. WAVES on back...I was singing my HEART out throughout the show! It ROCKED ME ACROSS THE FREAKING HALL! I was blown away!

I told my son and his friend, "This isn't normal guys! This show will forever ruin you when you see other bands live. It doesn't get any better than what you saw!" And it's so true.

I've never seen a show like that!

Thank you RUSH for putting so much creativity, money and time into your shows! You made a beautiful memory for me that I will NEVER forget:):):)

There's a time for livin' as high as we can
Behind us you will only see our dust.

You know we're havin' good days

Our future still looks brighter than our past
We feel no need to worry
No reason to be sad

Oracle!

Thank you! I will dwell in that land forever more. LOL!

I have to add that WITCH HUNT is so dark, weird, loud, and such a surprise to me because I had never heard it before. Whatever the studio version sounds like, the live version had me in ANOTHER WORLD. My son and I kept looking at each other like, "Whoa! How cool is this???" VERY cool song live!

RUSH is so brilliant and underrated, man.
#210 - Posted 6/14/07 @6:42PM by Bravest Face [contact]

Oracle, great choice (#204) but for me Pwrgirl's experience is best summed up by these lyrics:

energy is contagious
enthusiasm spreads

YEAH!!!

I keep getting more excited by the moment for the show I am attending in Charlotte on Monday, and Pwrgirl, your post probably energizes me even more, if of course that were even possible.

I have said many times that Rush spoils their fans, we get used to outstanding performances and hold the bar really high, looking for every little damn minor mistake.

I say this: Go enjoy the show Rush fans!! You never know, this could be your last! Hopefully not, but as Alex said in RIR "I think you have to look at all of life like that" or at least fairly close to what he said anyway.

Just thinking that 4 days from this exact moment I will be at the venue waiting for the show to start....

I think another reason, as if I needed any more, that I am so excited about this show is that there are so many songs I have never heard live.

Assuming we are all privy to the setlist here in this thread, I hope, if not then don't read the rest of the way :)
The following I have never heard live before:

Of course everything from S&A
Digital Man
Entre Nous
Mission
Circumstances
Witch Hunt
A Passage to Bangkok
Neil's new drum solo (of course)

Hell, that's 16 out of 28 songs!

Damn, this will be pretty new in some ways probably for many of us.
#217 - Posted 6/14/07 @7:05PM by Pwrgirl [contact]

OK..I've just heard the studio version of WITCH HUNT, yep. THAT'S IT! Only LOUDER and more chilling and OMINOUS live! The video is cool, too. TOOL only wish they could bring chills like that on an audience.

(But of course, TOOL sucked live, compared to RUSH. They just don't GET it, or something. All their songs blended into one song. And I knew most of them! I admired them so much until I saw them live. So pretentious, it's not funny.)

RUSH know how to entertain an audience! They give you so much for your buck...it's unusual. And this fan appreciated all that they put into that show.

Ah...I've said enough;)

Have fun seeing this show, guys! I KNOW you'll love it!
#218 - Posted 6/14/07 @7:13PM by kenster2112@sbcglobal.net [contact]

#220 - Posted 6/14/07 @7:27PM by kenster2112@sbcglobal.net [contact]

I think the other two songs are The Weapon and The Enemy Within,I'm not sure of the exact order because of Freeze on VT.The first three were part of the p/g tour. Concept within a
concept kinda thing. Very Rushish. Pardon the expression. I do recommend the strong use of headphones to appreciate the earlier songs.

All of this talk of taking children to the show makes me kind of sad :( By the time I have children old enough to go to a Rush show, it is highly unlikely they will be touring, unless of course they can fashion rocking chairs suitable for the guys to sit in while on stage (lol)

Yeah..Tool sucked live and I saw 'em in '94, back when Sober was their only song.

I guess Maynard got pissed at the crowd so he walked off the stage and ended the show after just a few songs...no refund or explanation. F'EM says I!!!

I'm getting ready for the road trip down to West Palm and the Tampa now. Making sure the Land Cruiser (an '85) is in good order.

I'm "one of them" who thinks the new set contains too many new songs, but in the old days RUSH always played most of the new record on the supporting tour. Still, I would like to see four of five of the new songs replaced with a classic.

I think the sets from the VT & R30 tours were SO good it spoiled us, or me at least. I want La Villa, Xanadu, and Hemispheres!!!
#226 - Posted 6/14/07 @8:07PM by PwrWndws [contact]

I can't wait for the boys to come back to Philly/Camden. The T Center will be rocking that's for sure. S/A is a great album. Probably their best work in years. It was well worth the wait. As for the setlist, It's a great one but wished they would've included "Marathon" or anything else from Power Windows and a few other albums Presto "The Pass" were left off. I could do without "Summertime Blues" and "Subdivisions" even though i love it, but have heard it many times on past tours. But overall, It's a great setlist.

The "Fear Series," or as it's more commonly known among Rush's fanbase, "The Fear Trilogy," The series consists of Part I: The Enemy Within (from Grace Under Pressure), Part II: The Weapon (from Signals), Part III: Witch Hunt (from Moving Pictures), and Part IV: Freeze (from Vapor Trails). Parts I, II, and III were released in reverse order, while Part IV was released more than twenty years after Part III. The songs do not follow a set storyline; instead, they deal with topics relating to the emotion of "fear".

In a 1994 interview, Neil Peart describes what inspired the "Fear" Series:

The idea for the trilogy was suggested by an older man telling that he didn't think life was ruled by love, or reason, or money, or the pursuit of happiness -- but by fear. This smart-but cynical guy's position was that most people's actions are motivated by fear of being hungry, fear of being hurt, fear of being alone, fear of being robbed, etc., and that people don't make choices based on hope that something good will happen, but in fear that something bad will happen.

I reacted to this the way all of us tend to react to generalities: "Well, I'm not like that!" But then I started thinking about it more, watching the way people around me behaved, and I soon realised that there was something to this viewpoint, So I sketched out the three "theaters of fear," as I saw them: how fear works inside us ("The Enemy Within"), how fear is used against us ("The Weapon"), and how fear feeds the mob mentality ("Witch Hunt").

As it happened, the last theme was easiest to deal with, so it was written first, and consequently appeared first on record, and the other two followed in reverse order for the same reason.

(From Rush Backstage Club Newsletter, January 1994)

* 1 Part One: The Enemy Within
* 2 Part Two: The Weapon
* 3 Part Three: Witch Hunt
* 4 Part Four: Freeze

Part One: The Enemy Within

The Enemy Within describes phobias and other situations that scare people intentionally, thus causing paranoia and worry. Instrumentally, the song begins with a sharp attack and ends by fading out, thus feeling like the first movement of a trilogy.

Part Two: The Weapon

The Weapon explains how everything that people fear can be used against them, even leaders, great nations, evil dictators, lovers, and murderers. Instrumentally, the song fades in at the beginning and fades out at the end, being the middle section of the trilogy.

Part Three: Witch Hunt

The concept of Witch Hunt is how manipulators can use fear to "possess" the "ignorant" masses to their liking, much like the Salem townspeople during the Witch Hunts. Instrumentally, the song fades in at the beginning, but ends on a strong climactic crescendo thus signalling the end of the trilogy, even though this song was recorded first in the sequence.

Part Four: Freeze

Freeze explores the fine line between running away and/or standing up to encounter one's fear. Instrumentally, the song begins and ends sharply, without fade. Not being part of the original conception of Fear as a trilogy, it doesn't fit as cohesively with the other three pieces, but may be seen as somewhat of an addendum or afterword.

#77 Weinrib rocks:

I've noticed that Alex's guitar has tended to drown out a part of Rush's dyanmic on every tour since Counterparts too. Did his guitar drown out out the dynamics in softer pieces such as "Digital Man", "Entre Nous", and "Mission"?

"Between The Wheels" was great to hear on the R30 tour, but I wasn't thrilled about Alex's crushing power chords demolishing Ged's bass, vocals, and keyboards. The original recording of "Between The Wheels" on P/G featured strong Lifeson chords, yet they didn't overpower with a burdensome power-chord crunch. They were somewhat light, like a cross between reggae guitar chords and a guitar chord from a Talking Heads or XTC album (both class bands btw..)
#229 - Posted 6/14/07 @8:16PM by kenster2112@sbcglobal.net [contact]

Your right,PRINCE. MP tour -every song but witchhunt. Signals tour-every song but Losing It. P/G every song but Afterimage....and so on. I think they thrive on their new stuff and seem to push it out more on tour because of less radio play. Later in life ,you'll appreciate hearing these song live. Not that you don't now but........My buddy Dave and his Wife Abby are sitting 14th row in front of Alex in West Palm tomorrow night. He's about 5'10''......ah,forget it!

Hey, I'm having trouble getting the bootleg of the concert, could anyone send it to me? That would be great. BTW, the concert was FREAKIN' AWESOME! My first time seeing Rush and I was not disappointed.
#231 - Posted 6/14/07 @8:19PM by Pwrgirl [contact]

Thank you, WILB! Really! I'm still discovering this band's music, and to find this song is some kind of trilogy...wow.

Thanks again for that detailed explaination.
#232 - Posted 6/14/07 @8:25PM by thick_like_wal [contact]

I'm not feeling "Armor and Sword" too much either; hopefully it will fall of the setlist as "Time and Motion" did, after a few shows, on the T4E tour.

The South Park clip before "Tom Sawyer", did they have that done special for the show, or was that broadcast as part of a regular episode?

Just spent the better part of an hour catching up on this thread. Now I'm really pumped for Saturday 6/23 in Va! I love the set list, but would happily sub a few from PW-VT for Digital Man and Between the Wheels. FWIW, A&S is probably the one I'm most looking forward to from S&A.
#241 - Posted 6/14/07 @8:42PM by thick_like_wal [contact]

Armor and Sword definitely has its moments, but the overall feel is a bit drawn out and repetitive, like the song was waiting for a veteran producer to trim it down a bit and turn it into a real beast.

Ged's basslines shine throughout S&A. I believe that, of all three members, Ged has continued to progress by leaps and bounds on his instrument. My only general complaint with the bass guitar on S&A is the occasional burying by Alex's distortion. Engineer Chycki might be to blame, since he's Alex's buddy after all.

Anyone notice that Neil's snare is a bit buried in the mix on S&A too?), but it feels a bit *loopy*, like the song was waiting for a veteran producer to trim it down a bit and turn it into a real beast.

Did the boys slice out the "Art as expression" section of Natural Science, as they've tended to do in recent tours? Shame if they did, as that's one of my favorite Rush lyric lines.
#243 - Posted 6/14/07 @8:48PM by Scotto [contact]

Pwrgirl - Thanks for the uplifing write up!! It is great to hear from one of the few female Rush fans that are open with their love for Rush!! Glad your son could enjoy the show with you.

Wilb - Thanks for the info on the Fear "Series"!!

For those Subdivisions "bashers" out there, this song must stay, easily the best song of the R30 concert. :-)

As an old-time Rush fan, 9 songs from S&A is not enough, their setlist seems to be a perfect mix (except for the denial of a "bunny" song or two).
#244 - Posted 6/14/07 @8:52PM by Scotto [contact]

Nobody has mentioned much about Spindrift that attended the show, how did that song play out????? Seems like a natural Rush concert song.
#245 - Posted 6/14/07 @8:52PM by MalignantNarcissist [contact]

I completely agree about how Alex's distortion sometimes drowns out Geddy's amazing basslines. As a bass player it can make it hard to learn a song that I really want to learn. That's my only complaint about Alex's guitar playing...other than that he is one of the most talented guitar players i've ever heard. Each of the three members are extremely talented in their own instruments.
#246 - Posted 6/14/07 @8:53PM by MalignantNarcissist [contact]

Spindrift was really good. One of my favorite songs they played actually. it really did sound amazing live.
#247 - Posted 6/14/07 @8:55PM by Scotto [contact]

Thanks MalNarcissist - I'm Looking forward to the August 3rd & 4th shows in No. Cal. :-)

Has anyone downloaded the bootleg yet? how is the quality?
#249 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:01PM by Pwrgirl [contact]

Small, funny moment after SUBDIVISIONS, Scotto!

Geddy heard someone say something in the audience after the song, and he said, nodding seriously, "Yeah, I'm from the suburbs, too!" LOL!
#250 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:02PM by MalignantNarcissist [contact]

lol, yeah, anyone know what that was about? Pwrgirl where were you seated at the concert?
#251 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:05PM by MalignantNarcissist [contact]

was anyone as pumped as i was when they came out and played Bangkok?
#252 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:20PM by Pwrgirl [contact]

He said it on kind of quietly on microphone! You don't remember that? LOL! I guess I thought it was funny, so it stuck in my brain.

Bangkok? Oh yes. I was WAITING to hear that song!
#253 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:22PM by MalignantNarcissist [contact]

yeah, i heard him, i was just curious to what he was saying it.
#254 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:24PM by Scotto [contact]

Funny that during the "Setlist" games almost everyone had some kind of medely. I think we all knew that the fellas would change something up and not having a medley was one of the suprises.

Also nobody expected 9 songs from S&A, another suprise.

Atlanta concert goers - Was there any "Alex rants" or any references to baseball?
#255 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:25PM by MalignantNarcissist [contact]

what did everyone think of Entre Nous? I thought it was a prime song to play. And did everyone like Hope? I was so glad he played that. It's such a heartfelt piece and beautifully written.
#256 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:25PM by Pwrgirl [contact]

I was seated in 206, ff. Not too far away, and not too close. But actually closer than I thought! I was pleased:) Where were you seated, Malig?
#257 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:26PM by MalignantNarcissist [contact]

Nope, no alex rants or baseball talk :( , i was seated on the lawn...i waited to long to get tix and i'm poor ;)
#258 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:28PM by Pwrgirl [contact]

I loved hearing Entre Nous. When you you think about it, that song is really made to be played live. It was beautiful.
#259 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:28PM by Bravest Face [contact]

You lucky rascals, but then again, by the time they play Charlotte they will have all of the kinks worked out and such ;)
#260 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:29PM by Scotto [contact]

How was Entre Nous? Perm Waves was my 1st concert and it was not even played then. Seems like a dartboard selection from the "songs never played" list.

I guess we had too much baseball reference with Geddy and ESPN over the last 4 months.
#261 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:31PM by Scotto [contact]

MalNarc - How is watching a concert from the lawn?

Funny that my General Admission seats in 1980 had me near the front in the "push your way to the front" days of concert viewing.
#262 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:32PM by dblagent1 [contact]

I am listening to the first boot and downloading the second! It sounds great and the second is even a bit better.
#263 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:32PM by Big Joe [contact]

I'm really pumped for all the Perm Waves material. I stole my brother's bootleg 8-track of that back when I was about 12 and have been hooked ever since!
#264 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:34PM by Pwrgirl [contact]

Entre Nous was heavy and loud...as it should be played. And they played it strong.

Sorry...I still have Witch Hunt in my skull...thudding loudly and resonating hauntingly. Wow....
#265 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:35PM by gttim [contact]

Some guy shot a video of Subdivisions. The video is not great, but the sound is better than what I got on Far Cry.

Lawn was just fine. I was right in the center and could see perfectly. I had binoculars too, so i could see things even most up front couldn't see. Yeah, Witch Hunt was mind blowing. Hey dblagent1, could you send me the bootlegs? i can't download them for some reason?
#267 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:39PM by cartermitch [contact]

I think the Southpark clip was specially made for the show. The band is friends with Matt Stone and Trey Parker, and in the episode where Timmy is in a band, the song they play is the sped up riff from Spirit of Radio.

The show was amazing. There were a few hiccups, but that has to be expected on the first show. I loved how Geddy broke out the Rickenbacker for Bangkok. I think it, like like the red Fender he used in Circumstances, was tuned down so that he could sing the upper registers.

I thought Geddy's voice sounded very good to since it was so fresh. It was much better than on the R30 concert video.

Outdoor concerts are notoriously hard to eq, but I think they did a great job. I do think they made Alex's guitar solos a bit hot on a few songs though.

I also thought the show got a whole lot better during the second set because it got dark outside. You could finally see the awesome lightshow. I was also blown away by Far Cry. While I don't think it was the strongest on the album, it may be the strongest of the new material live (although the MMB and MalNar kicked ass).

Overall, it makes me really sad that I won't have a chance to go see them again on this tour, because the show was just supberb. Worth every penny of the ticket price.
#268 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:43PM by MalignantNarcissist [contact]

yeah, MMB and MalNar were superb. in one interview they said they didn't think they were gonna play MalNar, so i was bummed, but when they actually did, OMG! Amazing!

#274 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:58PM by Bravest Face [contact]

Pwrgirl, do you remember, about how long did the show run, counting intermission?
#275 - Posted 6/14/07 @9:59PM by Bravest Face [contact]

Sorry, Wilb, damn I'd go crazy! ;0 4 days is driving me insane right now!
#276 - Posted 6/14/07 @10:00PM by cartermitch [contact]

Yes, for one bright shining moment (actually a whole song) Geddy broke out the black and white Rick for Bangkok. It was 1976 all over again. He also, by the way, used the Moog Littly Phatty Stage Edition, which is a small, yet 100% analog synth (I own one) for all of the keyboard parts that were originally played on the moog.
#277 - Posted 6/14/07 @10:00PM by Pwrgirl [contact]

Counting intermission? It started at 7:40, and ended at 11:00. So about three hours.
#278 - Posted 6/14/07 @10:04PM by Bravest Face [contact]

Pwrgirl, what did you think of Natural Science live? What kind of visual on the screen did they have for that one? I promise these are my last questions. :)
#279 - Posted 6/14/07 @10:05PM by Wilb [contact]

I have Manchester and Sheffield tickets in hand ... just been looking on E-bay for Birmingham tickets ...2 third row seats ... starting bid is 349 english pounds ... :((((
#280 - Posted 6/14/07 @10:05PM by MalignantNarcissist [contact]

One thing i was disappointed about was, i wanted to see the doubleneck sg. I love that guitar, and really wanted to see it at my first rush concert.
#281 - Posted 6/14/07 @10:06PM by MalignantNarcissist [contact]

i don't think there was a visual for natural science Brave...but man, did it friggin ROCK!
#282 - Posted 6/14/07 @10:07PM by Bravest Face [contact]

Wilb, I don't the ratio of pounds to dollars, but if that were $349 dollars, holy crap!!

That would be 700 dollars !!!
#284 - Posted 6/14/07 @10:08PM by Pwrgirl [contact]

BF,

It was the same as the RIO screens. But just as AWESOME live! They have not given up their quest to make this song perfect. LOL! In fact, I think they have that song about perfect now. It sounded GREAT!
#285 - Posted 6/14/07 @10:11PM by Bravest Face [contact]

I love Nat Sci live and I can't wait to hear Digital Man as well as all of the new stuff live! A lot of people have been complaining about BTW, but I think that song is awesome live, just my opinion though.
#286 - Posted 6/14/07 @10:14PM by Prince Sphinc-Tor

#265

That guy was surrounded by GIANTS!!!!

Looks like they might have scaled down the video screens some. I loved the multi-panelled screens on the R30, couldn'tt ell if they were still using them.

Sounded great though...I'll be 7 rows from Lerxst in 24 hours!!!!
#287 - Posted 6/14/07 @10:17PM by Old Sol [contact]

I find it interesting that so many people think Alex's guitar is too high in the mix. I've seen RUsh on every tour since GUP and up until the TFE tour, I was always disappointed that I couldn't make out any of his solos. I think the problem is that he uses lots of echos, reverb, chorus, etc. That tends to muddy things up a bit. Rush is very much a heavy rhythm section kind of band. Drums and bass were always drowning out the guitar parts for me. Starting with TFE, I was suddently able to hear Lerxst with greater clarity.

At any rate, I'm eagerly anticipating the Camden, NJ show. IMO, S&A is the best new Rush material in decades. There's so much texture and contrast on this album. And the lyrics are flawless.

I manged to get seats directly in front of the sound board this time, so I figure the mix should be perfect from that perspective. Can't wait!
#288 - Posted 6/14/07 @10:20PM by Pwrgirl [contact]

Have fun, Sphinc-tor!

I'm actually jealous now! LOL! I want to go again!

I have 93 hours to go until my show!!!

Well I went to YouTube to view the Atlanta Subdivisions video and after an hour getting lost viewing numerous Rush videos, I'm back. Seems like at this point I just can't get enough of the best musical band ever!!!!

PWRGRL, #199,

I didn't read any other post after #199, so that being said. You and hopefully many others finally understand,(even if you thought you understood before) why RUSH is simply the BEST! I've seen well over 200 shows in my life time with countless artist, but when it comes to RUSH...you just can't compare them to other bands. I will be there with grins on and fist pumping in NC on the 18th and Va on the 23rd. RUSH on folks...RUSH on!!!!

#294 - Posted 6/14/07 @10:35PM by cartermitch [contact]

Although it was hard to tell from where I was sitting, the professional photos from the Altanta newspaper make it seem like Alex has slimmed down quite a bit. I am always amazed at how good these guys look at their age (compared to, say, walking-death Keith Richards, Ozzy, Jimmy Page, etc). You can tell that music has always come first with them and that stupid rock star problems like drugs and booze have never been an issue with them.
#295 - Posted 6/14/07 @10:38PM by Bravest Face [contact]

Jim, the hour draws closer and closer:

3 days, 20 hours, and 53 minutes!!!!

Cartermitch, I second that!! Although a little booze ever now and then is okay ;)

Hey MalignantNarc - I see in your concert review/write-up you are only 19, I thought you were a seasoned Rush vet with your knowledge and insight. Tip o' the cap your way. :-)

RUSH is a right of passage and I'm so very happy my son loves the band as much as me...well not as much as me but he is young.

Nope Scotto, no Alex rants... but the fact that he appeared in the vast majority of the videos on-screen more than made up for it (the opening video to the second set was kinda out there).

I was seated in Sect 203, Row VV, Seat 16... a little to the right of center, just about under the point where the covered section ended (but luckily there was no rain anyway). I agree with you Pwrgirl, it wasn't too close, but not too far. I was pleasantly surprised as well... a lot closer than I was imagining in my head the whole trip down.

Aside from a few minor glitches (which is surely expected on opening night), I thought it was fantastic. I really would have liked to have met up with some of you, but I didn't know how to go about it beforehand.

I ended up buying almost $200.00 worth of merchandise... 2 T-shirts, 1 hat, 1 S&A tour book, and finally broke down and bought the hardcover tour book collection (hey, maybe I can have it autographed later down the road). They even gave out these nifty, fairly sturdy little black carry bags with white starman and Rush logo to put it all in to protect it.

I was royally pissed when I was not allowed to bring in my bottle of water at the gate. I called the Amphitheater before, and the recording had stated all the things that were not allowed, but what was allowed was "one factory-sealed bottle of water". Upon leaving the hotel, I made sure to make a stop and get the largest bottle of unopened water I could purchase, then head to the show. Then some bitch at the gate said the bottle was too big, that it could only be "this tall", which amounted to a bottle the size of my fist. I was given the option to either drink it at the gate or throw it away, even after I told her that I checked to see if it was allowed, and the recording should have been more specific. Don't really know what kind of farked up logic that is when they won't allow a certain size of water bottle, but there were numerous people holding up cell phones during the concert (after sundown no less, which was an entirely different level of annoying) that security staff walked right by and ignored the whole night.

All in all though, it was a fantastic evening. The videos in between the songs were incredibly sweet icing on an already delicious cake last night!

Hey guys! I got into Dimeadozen and am downloading the bootleg right now! I'm so excited!
#318 - Posted 6/14/07 @11:46PM by yountmj [contact]

I'm thoroughly drained after that show and the road trip involved to experience it... but I've never been so happy to be so worn out!

I couldn't get over all the cars, trucks, and RVs lined up for over 12 miles on the side of the interstate waiting to get in to the Bonnaroo music festival on the way back to Kentucky. That was insane... and when we actually got to the point where it was being held, there were already literally hundreds of RVs and vehicles there on the grounds! Wow...
#319 - Posted 6/14/07 @11:48PM by Pwrgirl [contact]

Whoo hoo, Malig! I haven't even tried. LOL! I know it would be futile! Plus, I'm tired. But let us know how long it takes to download it, OK?

Well...talk to you guys again sometime soon!

Have a GREAT experience at the concert!

RE #199 Pwrgrl, I actually teared up when I read your post - I love reading about 1st timers' experiences! It makes me remember my first time; I remember being bummed out for WEEKS afterward because nothing compares! Glad you had a great time.

I know what you mean GG. Me and the same person I went to see Rush with last night are going to see Tool this Sunday in Evansville, IN. Though this will be my first time seeing them, so soon after Rush will probably doom this show before it even has a chance, but I could be wrong (at least I hope I am).

Dammit, I can't stop....listening to S&A again, for the second time tonight. Pwrgrl, you're an inspiration. How I'd love to meet a female Rush freak here in Charlotte! If you know of one, 40ish, let me know!

I at least am wearing one of the shirts I bought in Atlanta at the Tool show this weekend. I'm wondering how many comments I'll get. :)

I want to give a shout out to Ed for all of his hard work in facilitating the best blog on the internet, the time and effort he puts forth is amazing.

I also want to thank all of you Rush fans/friends for your insight, tips, links, and knowledge of my favorite musical group. There has always been something about Rush fans that sets us apart from the rest.

While Geddy has said that the band is "our dirty little secret", clearly we would all shout from the top of the mountain:

I'm looking forward to seeing how many people are wearing the S&A t-shirt from the Rush website store. I got mine a few weeks ago. My brother is going with me and I'm letting him borrow my Permanent Waves 1980 tour t-shirt. Listening to Faithless now. I do wish they would do that one but I'm still extremely happy with the set list. Can't wait to see/hear Natural Science live. It's always been one of my very favorites. Charlotte, NC Monday night!! Aaah...a dream about to come true.
#327 - Posted 6/15/07 @12:15AM by Scotto [contact]

Damn you jbfenderjazz, Perm Waves was my 1st Rush concert and you still have the 1980 tour t-shirt! I bow down to thee.
#328 - Posted 6/15/07 @12:21AM by jbfenderjazz [contact]

It doesn't look too great but it's still in one piece :-)

However, the one I'm loaning my brother is a re-issue that's available at some stores around here (and on the Rush store, I think). I also have original Signals and Hold Your Fire shirts...also in pitiful condition. I wish I had kept them in pristine condition but just never could resist wearing them.

Ok, S&A is finished so I'm going to bed. I think I have to work tomorrow 8-(

Other than the Rickenbacher, what other 'cool' instruments were used?

Geddy used to play the double neck Rick for Bankok, right, as he played guitar during the solo and footpedals.

Did Alex use any of the PRS? or just Gibson's?
#330 - Posted 6/15/07 @12:40AM by kenster2112@sbcglobal.net [contact]

Are the t-shirts that different from venue shirts?
#331 - Posted 6/15/07 @1:20AM by cartermitch [contact]

Crotale, Alex used a PRS on a couple of songs, but mostly Gibsons. His black Gibson had a whammy bar on it that looked like it was from a Fender set-up(as opposed to a Bigsby tremelo or other add on).

In the encore Alex played his white ES-335 (or maybe it was a 345, or 355 or something along those lines). Geddy played a low-tuned red Fender during Circumstances. He also used an analog Moog keyboard along with a digital one. Unfortunately there was no doubleneck from Alex or Geddy, although that is understandable since they were used mainly for Xanadu, which was not played.

#254 -- Hey, friend! You should recheck that statement:

Several folks expected 9 -- even 10 -- songs from S&A. Me, SF, Spin, Liver -- and maybe more. We might have felt crazy at the time, but turns out we & Rush think alike.

TISLUPRE: no, Armor & Sword is not TISLUPRE -- I repeat 'not'! it will be possibly the song me and my 12-yr-old son agree on most come Aug. 30

#338 - Posted 6/15/07 @2:21AM by Scotto [contact]

Hi "Cool Geddy Lee", I stand corrected then.

For you, SF, Spin, and Liver to have 10 songs expected from S&A is quite the prediction. So on the "set list game" you actually had 10 songs listed?? Which numbers are your "set list game" prediction? Mine is #41 from set list one.

Honestly if they played all 13 I would be happy. Typical internet - reading the written word does not always show what a person means.

The fact I predicted Digital Man, Circumstances, and Natural Science was a miracle.

Did you predict a medely like everyone else?

#345 - Posted 6/15/07 @3:02AM by How f---ing cool is Geddy Lee. [contact]

#342 -- It's all cool, Scotto. Wasn't trying to pick a fight -- we're still buds.

Actually, because I'm insane, I just went and reviewed the Setlist Game 2 thread, and quite a few people chose 9 or 10 S&A songs -- in fact, my impression is that the vast majority picked 7 or 8 -- and I believe that was before we heard that number in an interview, but I could be mistaken.

As for the overall contest -- some people had some amazing ones picked correctly, including yours (DM, Circ. & NS).

Oracle (nee soundchaser61) -- I believe you are the winner, based on your revision having 17 (your pre-revision had 14 or something). There were a couple of 16's, a number of 15's, and most people got at least a dozen correct. Less than that, you'd have to be picking Copacabanna and stuff like that!

Bottom line: I would guess that most people who played the setlist game are pleased and are not the ones complaining about the actual final setlist picked by Rush. (For example (one of many), Circumstances came up again and again.)

DRUPRESW: how I feel about waiting until Aug. 30

If you look at the pictures from AccessAtlanta.com pro photos and the pictures from tour gallery for the Atlanta
show, their wearing different clothes, did they change their clothes during the show ? since this is their first show of the tour.
#347 - Posted 6/15/07 @3:40AM by xanadu777

The Atlanta show was only my 2nd Rush show-the first was "Hemispheres"tour-so to say this was an incredible experience is the understatement of the century. We had good, but not great seats-but the sound was incredibly clear, and you could see everything with the big screens.I even saw Geddy throw his wter down and run on stage a few seconds late as Alex started the opening chords of Limelight. I knew the setlist ahead,so I wasn't surprised or disappointed. All of the new songs were even better live-esp. Armor and Sword and the Way The Wind Blows, and Far Cry ROCKED!My other highlights were entre ous,Natural Science,Secret Touch, and circumstances, and of course Neal's solo-which was almost completely different from the last few tours. The whole set was extremely tight-esp. for a first show.An unforgettable experience!!!!!!!!!!!!
#348 - Posted 6/15/07 @3:42AM by xanadu777

Yes, I know Geddy and Alex changed shirts-Geddy's said BLAH BLAH BLAH the first set.Not sure about Neal.
#349 - Posted 6/15/07 @3:45AM by xanadu777

I got their only white T-shirt(sick of black ones)with a different kind of look on the front(an old gas station with big arrows sticking in the ground out front, and a snake in the road),and the dates on the back.

BY the way the first time I saw Rush in concert it was also on the Hemispheres tour. (Tour of the Hemispheres)
I sure wish I had the shirt from that concert still,
it disapeared somewhere through the years.
I had 8th row center seats with a bunch of my friends. The ticket cost $8.50 at the Long Beach Arena' that show was awesome.

the pyro-technics on Far Cry were great, but the coolest to me was I think on One Little Victory with the dragon-when the dragon breathed fire in the left corner and looked like it caught the stage on fir, and the big bursts at the end, where you could feel the heat(35 rows back!)And there was another like firecracker or bomb blast earlier in the show-forget which song.Plus the light clusters that would come down and do spots on Alex and Geddy were way cool!
#361 - Posted 6/15/07 @6:03AM by xanadu777

Hi-Fi Buys lists capacity as 19,000 total(7,000 seats, and 12,000 lawn. The lawn was only about 1/3 full,so I'd guestimate it 11-12,000-but it seemed like more.Still it was an AWESOME audience-stood up the whole show and everyone was totally into it!

#366 - Posted 6/15/07 @7:51AM by yountmj [contact]

It seems like I'm one of the few that believes the "goof" on the Limelight intro was not an accident, but intentional. They way they were smiling, plus the way Geddy runs onstage with a napkin wiping his mouth off ties directly in with the last bit of the intro video.

I am going to do the unthinkable and actually wear a critic's hat after watching a HOME MOVIE VERSION OF OPENING NIGHT!!! Talk about unfair. The hell with it, im going to do it anyway....

I know Geddy aint 25 anymore, but he might want to at least think about picking a key to sing in. Jesus, he was all over the place in Bangkok. High or Low, Ged.... both sounds a bit.... I don't know shitty I guess.

FarCry sounded a bit rougher than expected. It seemed like Ged was kind of yelling the lyrics and struggling to keep up.

Well, thats about enough for now. This just aint fair, opening night and all... listening through a sony camcorder.... I would like to hear the second set... whats up with that Digital Rush Experience thing? Im confused. Its says I cant join and what not.
#371 - Posted 6/15/07 @9:24AM by oddtimesarcasm [contact]

One more thing...

Farcry sounds like a hell of a hard song to sing live. Not much room to take a breath, its like those machine gun parts in 2112. It will be interesting to see if they sequence some of the vocal parts as the tour goes on. It actually doesnt sound quite right with him singing them all. The notes like inheerriiiitttttt are sustained in the recorded version, with the next line coming full blast over the top of the fading last line. It sounds kind of funny without that sustain at the end of the lines..... or I am just a fool? You make the call. H If Alex could sing worth a shit, he could do some parts, but he can't. We all know it, ecspecially Geddy. It always seems like Geddy tries to oversing him when he jumps in here and there. Its kind of funny actually.
#372 - Posted 6/15/07 @10:05AM by Bravest Face [contact]

The Ged interview was awesome, now counting down to Charlotte:

3 days, 9 hours and 26 minutes!!!!

Yountmj, thanks for feeling us in, I kept looking at Maestro's post thinking, "damn this looks familiar!" but I couldn't place it because I hadn't looked at the Counterparts insert in quite a while. Once again, thanks for solving the mystery. One of the many things I love about this band is that even for diehard fans there are so many mysteries, riddles, etc.
#373 - Posted 6/15/07 @10:25AM by unktehila [contact]

....of course that "accident" at the beginning of Limelight was intentional... the way the video plays into the opening riff of the song and rings out and Geddy and Neil run onstage. that's brilliant, i love it. wonder if the joke will get tired at the opening of say, they're 30th show??
#374 - Posted 6/15/07 @10:43AM by SnowDoggy [contact]

they can't do that every night. It's bad enough taht we all know what songs are coming, but knowing when the same lame joke is coming?

is the audience banter going to be identical too?

if it was intentional, i kinda hope they change it.the intro to limelight is one of the highlights of the song, that goofed up intro kinda messed it up a little.

I don't want to beat a dead horse, but don't you guys think Rush is a bit behind the times with these standardized sets?

In the 80s and early 90s they could get away with it because the sets could only be leaked through word of mouth.

I know they pride themselves on doing their own thing, but is there any other major act out there that plays note for note the exact same show night after night after night?

To be honest, I don't know how they do it. I would get playing the exact same set after about a week

Very cool to see/hear Bangkok. Especially when Alex takes a toke and Ged has his Ricky. And surprisingly Alex didn't chump the guitar solo. Great video too. I shall be enjoying such as the Detroit show.

HELLO ALL!

Long time no nothing!

Life is so-so in the land of Felix.

Kinda lost my job (I resigned before they could fire me)
I have two herniated discs which are pushing on nerves and making my right leg numb and be in pain at the same time. Its a rather odd feeling.

BUT...I'm off to the West Palm show tonight! Lawn seats.
Me, the misses and daughter. She's 10, this will be her second Rush show. (She saw Rush 30 at VA Beach. Wife was 8 mos preggers when we went to see T4E. So, maybe that's 2.5 shows.)

I'll type up a review tomorrow morning...maybe I'll even have some pictures.

SOMETHING ELSE! Remember that 'mystery song'? Perhaps it was another song that is going to be swtiched out every other night or something. Just a thought.

Then..lukcy me..back home to Raleigh for that show and I should be going to the Bristow VA (Between DC and Balt) show with my brother. I might have great seats for that, even backstage passes, considering that my brother works for and is kinda an important guy at 98 rock in Baltimore.

Necro, Although I have checked out the setlist and seen pics, I think the one thing I am trying not to indulge in is to listen to any actual performances until after Monday. Good to hear that you thought it kicked rear though!!!

I've seen Dream Theater a few times now, and every time I've seen them, their live performance was an exact mirror image, almost note-for-note reproduction of their studio work. Also, their setlists remain virtually unaltered throughout the tour. I know there's quite a few bootlegs out there of them performing different cover tunes (specifically Rush) in the past, but I've personally never heard them do that live. It's a great representation of their technical prowess to be able to pull of what seems to be the impossible on their albums, but it would be nice for them to change it up some.

At least Rush plays their parts a little differently, and they have been known to change up their setlists mid-tour. It's hard enough to get people to agree on pizza toppings, much less a Rush setlist. It's always the same... dropping some songs in favor of other ones, not playing any songs from one particular album, deciding to play a cover tune, or playing some old gems that people have been dying to hear, but then complain when they don't do it "right". At least they try to play the songs that a lot of people have been clamoring for for the past decade or more. It kinda puts it into perspective when they respond to certain requests fans make, and Geddy says "Sorry, just can't do it". Well, when Bangkok is played, and Ged is all over the place, that to me is an "I told ya so". At least they tried, and I love 'em for it!

Experiencing all the little glitches first-hand Wednesday night made it all the more memorable to me. It's the flaws that made it such a unique experience... and I will cherish that night always.

Mike

C.Fel..... Long time no see! Sorry to hear about the job (least you served em right before they had the chance to let you go) Can anything be done regarding the two herniated discs?

Am sorry to hear that C.F.

Greetings Rush fans in West Palm Beach. Hope you guys had a great time. I'm sure you did. Please give us a review on the show tonight. ie. sound, energy, etc. I'm eagerly anticipating The Camden, NJ. show July 6. It can't come fast enough. It's gonna be awesome.

Alex sings ALOT of BGV on thi show-and they are actually quite good-you could really hear him in the mix-and th deep SUBDIVISONS part was way cool with the camera on him!

Re#374. Snowdoggy, the audience banter *has* been canned since I started seeing them in 82. No surprise there
