Geddy, Alex, Neil: Rock and Roll cover boys
Posted at 10:38 AM | comments (54)

Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart are currently all on the covers of major magazines for their respective instruments. We've known about these for a while but I now have large scans of all three covers so I thought I'd feature them all in one post.

Geddy Lee is on the cover of the July 2007 issue of Bass Guitar Magazine. Complete scans of the article can be found in this post. The tagline reads Inside the mind of Geddy Lee: Rush finds the perfect mix of chops & songcraft on Snakes & Arrows. Geddy discusses the Big & Bold rhythm section on Snakes & Arrows, flamenco chops, the Jaco bass and the return of the taurus pedals.

Alex Lifeson graces the cover of the June 2007 issue of Guitar One Magazine. The issue is a Prog Rock Special and the tagline reads Alex Lifeson goes retro on Snakes & Arrows. In addition to the Alex interview where he discusses the new album and what gear he'll bring with him on tour, transcriptions of 8 classick Rush licks are included. Thanks to tst4eko at Counterparts for the scans.

And last but not least, the June 2007 issue of DRUM! Magazine featuring Neil Peart is now on newstands. The tagline reads Neil Peart: return of a progressive powerhouse. Thanks to scottc for the heads up.

I want Al's shirt!! That is awesome!
#2 - Posted 5/15/07 @11:43AM by Ted [contact]

They all look great, but I'd personally like Geddy's photo more if he looked a bit less sinister. Just my opinion...
#3 - Posted 5/15/07 @11:48AM by analogkid [contact]

Neil looks the best he has in many YEARS
#4 - Posted 5/15/07 @11:49AM by Fiat [contact]

Shot of Neil is from 04. But the eye bags do look better in this pic.

We are in the middle of a hard rock fantasy!!! This s--t is so f-ing great i just can't believe it! While it's no miracle the boys are cover boys this month, it's just incredible cool, or kewl as Spin would say, that the whole vibe around Rush and the album and the music scene and fans is totally pumped and the whole world is aware that something good is going on. Despite naysayers, and there always will be, 2007 is The Year of Rush!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#6 - Posted 5/15/07 @11:54AM by SF in Prague [contact]

And the middle photo of Lerxst in which he's sitting facing the amp, he looks like a mezmerized kid having the time of his life with a big fat amp and making a monstrous sound. The real kicker is that this guys, who happens to be having a ball, is in the midst of creating one of rocks greatest albums.
Fan-f-ing-tastic!!!!!!!
#7 - Posted 5/15/07 @11:57AM by icred [contact]

#2--My Son (middle name "Geddy", 10-years-old) agrees. He says Geddy looks scary. And he is not easily frightened. LOL

Hey, SF--can you guess what I am listening to? Your hint:

"But we ho-uo-ld oooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!"

Dt-dut-da-dut-ut-da-be-pu-da-bum-bouujze!
#8 - Posted 5/15/07 @11:59AM by Pwrgirl [contact]

I like Geddy's sneer! Much more interesting than just smiling for the cameras, IMO.
#9 - Posted 5/15/07 @12:03PM by icred [contact]

Yah, I think he looks mysterious and badass. It would be cool if he had a moustache to twirl.
#10 - Posted 5/15/07 @12:19PM by SF in Prague [contact]

Eye See You!!!! Great to hear from you so soon! Here we are all over again!!! I know what you're up to...and there's an eerie Strataverious (sp?) violin coming your way at 2:50!!!!!!!!!! ;-)
Hi PwrGirl! Gedd looks just dangerous enough to get the girls interested and get the boys jazzed!!!!
Eye, BTW, is your son Really Geddy????? Maybe Gary??? Gotta be Gary...but if he's Gary, and you're eye c red...then he's the one in the distand early warning vid!!!!!!! ha ha .
#11 - Posted 5/15/07 @12:21PM by SF in Prague [contact]

Right now got one zero zero one playing...earlier had non-temporary waves going...trying to get myself into the possibilities of what lerxst was hinting at when talking about the encore...
#12 - Posted 5/15/07 @12:22PM by unktehila [contact]

the shot of Neil is so lame. why not put an intense "action" shot of him on the cover? what's up with the high school yearbook photo w/drumsticks pose?
Geddy would look good with the twirly Rollie Fingers moustache.
#13 - Posted 5/15/07 @12:27PM by SF in Prague [contact]

With Big Al in that almost-tie-died shirt he should be sitting on a giant magic mushroom!!!!!
GREAT NEWS !!!!!!! I just bought me and the wife two tickets to the US of A today...and just by coincidence we'll be in the SF bay area right around the time the boys bring their roadshow down for several ampitheater shows!!!!
What a coincidence!!!! Life's Absoluetly Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LONG LIVE RUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm, has Geddy been mispelling "Neil Peart" all these years?

If we are to think those are his scribblings in the middle picture (holding the chalk up), at least suspend our disbelief with better accuracy: look near his waist to see what reads like "Neil Pert".

Yes, it's minutiae, but Rush fans LOVE minutiae!
#15 - Posted 5/15/07 @12:28PM by SF in Prague [contact]

even if one can't spell life still roks!!!!!!! ;-)

Lamb who didn't lay down by Broadway...that recipe looks great!!!! Mmmmnnn,...curry....will it still work if i have to substitute some ingredients???

kumejast--????
#17 - Posted 5/15/07 @12:30PM by icred [contact]

Hey, SF!! Have heard the Strad part several times today already. Wooo--hooooo!!

My son's middle name really is Geddy. We decided to give our kids "normal" first names but, to balance them out, interesting middle names. My wife (a very straight-laced, valedictorian of her HS class, shy person) was the one who pushed it. I resisted at first because...well, because it seemed like a REALLY geeky thing to do. But she won me over. My father's first name is Gary so it does make some sense. :-)

One of my closest friends has a son, Alex (Alexander--it was a family name so he went with it) and another has a son whose middle name is Neil. I love getting them together for pictures. LOL
#18 - Posted 5/15/07 @12:35PM by Lamb Saag [contact]

And speaking of minutiae, check out the pic of Alex standing next to his amp: there's a giant blonde pube on it!!

Al, you dog, you!

-----------------------
And hello SF: I've attempted it without the fenugreek and cardamom, it's still good, but just not the same as going to your local curry take-away shop. : )
#19 - Posted 5/15/07 @12:36PM by SF in Prague [contact]

Dude ICRED YOU RULE THE UNIVERSE!!! (Or maybe we should say YOUR WIFE RULES THE UNIVERSE and she lets you out once in a while! ;-)
but that's totally cool. I love it here...i forgot that the world actually has normall people who have a sense of humor and what to enjoy life...or course normal first but after that Anything Can Happen!!!!!!!!!!! ;-)
#20 - Posted 5/15/07 @12:37PM by SF in Prague [contact]

#18-->AHHH!!! I wish i had a local curry shop! I'll give it a try!
#21 - Posted 5/15/07 @12:43PM by icred [contact]

#19--Yes, SF, your correction is more accurate. She rules the universe and I just live in it. LOL. Naw, just kidding--she's great.

And thanks for recognizing this for what it is! I really am not some super nerd dude who lives in my parents' basement and has pictures of Rush all over the place. I am about the most normal guy there is. Like you said, I just have a good sense of humor and I do love life! You are so correct!

I don't tell a lot of Rush fans about my son's middle name--they look at me like, "what a loser!" LOL

Want to hear the clincher? My son's school district offers 5th-Grade strings and guess what instrument he selected. Violin? Viola? Cello? Nope. Bass! It's the big-ass upright kind but he is already talking about moving to electric when he gets good!
#22 - Posted 5/15/07 @12:45PM by Liverpool.78 [contact]

Who the f@@k has messed with the picture of Big Al on the front of the Guitar One Mag! He looks like he's been squeezed and airbrushed to death!!

Looks like a cross between Barry Manilow and Liberace! I hope Al was not involved in it?

Liver.
#23 - Posted 5/15/07 @12:51PM by Liverpool.78 [contact]

Re #17 #21 Hey icred! how's things? I like the fact that you don't tell a lot of Rush fans about your son's middle name - just EVERYONE who logs on to this site!

My son [22] is called Gary. I didn't know at the time that Geddy was a corruption of Gary, based on his mother's mispronunciation of his name.

The freaky thing is that both Geddy and my son Gary share the same birthday- 29th July!
#24 - Posted 5/15/07 @12:53PM by icred [contact]

Liver--LOL. Well, you guys aren't just ordinary Rush fans. You are my pubmates. :-)
#25 - Posted 5/15/07 @12:54PM by SF in Prague [contact]

Icred, wishing young Geddy much succcess in his journey into the world of music!!!!!!
And Howdy Liver!!! I had the same disturbing feeling that Lerxst has been possesed by Liberace!! You took the words right outta my mouth!!! And the photo on the back of the insert in the album...the same phenomenon...we've gottta help excommunicate Liberace outta Lerxst!!!
Just imagine the big solo in Working Man and Big al comes out in sequins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! God Help Us!

#26 - Posted 5/15/07 @12:56PM by icred [contact]

Hey, I like Paisley! LOL. I'd perform in that shirt any day! :-)

Thanks, SF! He is really enjoying the bass. He is a mathematical kind of kid so he will do well if he keeps it up. My daughter plays piano and loves that! So, perhaps a band someday.......

Gotta run! Keep my barstool warm--I may be back this evening. Have an awesome day, all!
#27 - Posted 5/15/07 @12:58PM by SF in Prague [contact]

Liver and maybe others: you've recommended that to feel the full power of the force, one must trust ones feelings and play GUP and Signals together!!! So, since today i've started playing some albums from various eras, i launched Signals just now after Between The Wheels came to and end...and...guesss what happened--
VOILA! It works! The force is strong in these boys!!!!!!!
#28 - Posted 5/15/07 @12:59PM by Liverpool.78 [contact]

Count Floyd voice -"WOOOOO SCAARRY!!"

SF, great minds thinking alike AGAIN!

I like Neil's picture though. He looks 'normal'

I think Geddy looks kinda silly with the arched eyebrow and intense stare OVER the glasses. And that silly little beard makes him look like a twat! Good job it's his bass playing that makes him so f@@king cool!

Liver.
#29 - Posted 5/15/07 @12:59PM by SF in Prague [contact]

Eye C Read (past tense of course!), have a great day and we'll try to keep your stool free, but if GeddyGirl or PwrGirl or one of the other hot rush chicks comes around...forget about it! ;-)
#30 - Posted 5/15/07 @1:02PM by SF in Prague [contact]

Dude. Liver. Man that simply outrageous what you've said!!! I can't believe it. you really think he..our god...looks like...normal??????????? Ha ha. Twats and Liberace are fine but I think we're all nuts! and so we've gotta get a petition signed telling Lerxst he's gotta start wearing tutus or somethin.
#31 - Posted 5/15/07 @1:02PM by icred [contact]

SF--I would expect no less!

Eye Sea Read
#32 - Posted 5/15/07 @1:03PM by SF in Prague [contact]

oops! not lerxst! PRATT needs some wierding-up! (even though he's drum beats are pretty outta this world already!!!!!!)
#33 - Posted 5/15/07 @1:05PM by SF in Prague [contact]

Ah Eye, we'll make sure there's a spot for you!
And i guess now's an opportune time to go eat some dindin with the wifeypoo who in fact bought me S&A and is gonna see her first rush show this summer!
SF out for now and wishes anyone who's gonnna eat anytime soon--Bon Apetite!
#34 - Posted 5/15/07 @1:06PM by soundchaser61 [contact]

They should have put Lerxt on the cover while he was on stage during a rant!
#35 - Posted 5/15/07 @1:10PM by Ted [contact]

#12 - Rollie Fingers. As if I didn't feel old enough already!! Those A's teams were great. Remember the '73 WS? I'm a Met fan, but they didn't even belong on the same field as the A's that year.
#36 - Posted 5/15/07 @1:16PM by SF in Prague [contact]

Regarding best guitar solo (recent thread): my vote is Digital Man...i'm just listening to Signals and MAN! Lerxst really does it on that one...but a close second would be in The Weapon...in my humble opinion that is.
#37 - Posted 5/15/07 @2:26PM by driventotheedge [contact]

It's great to see our boys gracing the covers of these magazines, finally some recognition from people that actually know about music unlike other rags RS or fox. Does anyone know if this is a first for one band to be on three different covers at the same time? All the worlds a RUSH
#38 - Posted 5/15/07 @2:33PM by Spindrifter [contact]

#29, SF.... Ya forgot about GG!
#39 - Posted 5/15/07 @2:36PM by Spindrifter [contact]

#37 ~ I think that its a first!

Ha, I know that theres musicians out there that are anti Rush.... But, pix one of those guys finding 'The Mighty Trio' on all three covers!

Btw, almost forgot....

Todays lucky # is 29. 29 more dayz till the tour my friends!
#40 - Posted 5/15/07 @3:12PM by Liverpool.78 [contact]

Re #39....and FIVE bloody months 'til they hit UK shores!!

I'm gonna be a drooling slobbering mess by that stage after reading a billion posts from you lucky guys about how f@@king cool Geddy was, and how wierd Big Al looked in a sequinned tutu with a mini candelabra on top of his rack, and how normal Neil looked.....

More later

Liver,

#43 - Posted 5/15/07 @3:28PM by SF in Prague [contact]

hmmmm...the boys are all on magazine covers...while we're holed up in basements (our parent's of course) and the world keeps turning...some things are true, some aren't, but in any case Liver and Max and Co are screwed cause they gotta wait WAY TOO LONG!!! Ha Ha!!! i'm ursurping the early summer concert viewing right! i'm gonna do it! even though I'm way way way out east where the girls are beautiful and the beer is devine, I'm a headed west were Rush is the best (and plays much sooner mainly!)...but then when Liver and Nige and Co catch the boys in the UK...i'll have another! chance to see the boys...that is if i manage the stamina to drive to Germany for a show!
Blah blah blah you might think...and I agree!

I'm flush out of material!!! Spin, Necro! Liver! save the
Pub and put a beer in my hand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SF out (for a break--my guitar playing pal came by and we're headed to the workshop to bash out some bullocks (isn't that what Liver would say??? ;-)
#44 - Posted 5/15/07 @4:17PM by Liverpool.78 [contact]

It's our fellow Rushians in the Antipodes that I really feel for...if there are any Aussies out there, would yo go to Japan to catch a gig?

SF, I don't think I would say, "bash out some bullocks" You will have to enlighten us about what you and your guitar playing friend are going to do in the workshop, that involves A, bashing, or B, bullocks... unless of course it involves a beautiful Czech girl and some divine beer!? :-)

Later

Liver.

#45 - Posted 5/15/07 @4:43PM by unktehila [contact]

Re#35, hey Ted...

i don't really remember that series, i was only 4, but i do know that A's powerhouse team...
Reggie Jackson, Vida Blue, Gene Tenace, Rollie.. Sal Bando(?).
#46 - Posted 5/15/07 @6:38PM by your_pal_chris [contact]

Alex looks like he had his eyes done over their break. Probably one-stop shopping when he had his nose fixed.
#47 - Posted 5/15/07 @7:10PM by rob

Too cool to see Alex with his Les paul in the studio....cant wait to see the DVD

On the topic of kid's names Icred.....My 10 month old son's name is Alex......But he really was not named that solely on Alex Lifeson....both my wife and I just always liked that name
#48 - Posted 5/15/07 @7:24PM by 1-2-bucklemyshoe [contact]

#37

I think that in 2004 or 2005, all three guys were on covers of mags at the same time. I can't remember exactly when, but I know I bought all three at Borders at the same time and then sent them off to my brother. I'm hoping he still has them so I can add them to my collection.
#49 - Posted 5/15/07 @7:42PM by 1-2-bucklemyshoe [contact]

I also happened to notice that in Nov. 1996, all three guys were on the cover of Guitar Magazine, and the cover reads: "Rush returns to rock with their heaviest and best album in 15 years" That, of course, would be t4e. I don't know that I would agree with that evaluation, but I would agree with it if it were applies to S&A, which seems to have already be the consensus of many of the reviews we have seen.
#50 - Posted 5/15/07 @8:01PM by 1-2-bucklemyshoe [contact]

Here a quotation from Lerxst from that '96 issue of Guitar Magazine:

""Seriously, you know what? I don't know if I would ever want to be on the cover of Rolling Stone, to tell the truth. They have this thing against us. I have a sense that they go out of their way to ignore us, so at least they're making some kind of effort [laughs]. We've been around for 22 years with the same lineup; we haven't broken up and then regrouped. A lot of bands have cited us as influences, and that's great. That's what really means something to me -- that I've passed something on. I've been a teacher in some way, and that's really much more gratifying. So I couldn't give a s**t if we're ever on the cover of Rolling Stone. Just the fact that we haven't been is really cool, so I hope it doesn't get wrecked now." (Alex Lifeson, Nov. 1996)

Couldn't have said it any better
#51 - Posted 5/15/07 @9:40PM by rob

#37 Yes you right .....All three guys were on magazine covers Oct&Nov 2005
#52 - Posted 5/15/07 @9:44PM by rob

Correction....2004
#53 - Posted 5/16/07 @12:17PM by Ted [contact]

#45 - unktehila - you're right about all the players, Bando was definitely on third. Also Campaneris at SS, Rudi in CF, Catfish and Blue Moon on the pitching staff. Seems professional sports meant a lot more back then vs. now. It's cool that Geddy's so into MLB, but I don't think I can name more than 1-2 players on any of the current teams. BTW - your art is awesome!
#54 - Posted 5/16/07 @11:36PM by unktehila [contact]

Re#53 Hey TEd... i hear you man. Can't believe i forgot Catfish Hunter! I love that Geddy's a big baseball fan, very cool. thanks for the compliment!!
