[System of a Down: Intense, fierce and unnervingly weird]
I'm a big fan of System of a Down, one of the best bands to come out in recent years in my opinion. Although I'd classify their music as progressive rock (progressive metal might be a better term) I never really thought they sounded much like Rush at all. I recently read this review of their new album Hypnotize (on my Xmas list). This snippet discusses the fact that Darin Malakian (guitars, vocals) does a lot more of the lead vocals on this album.
... That spectrum might also be due in part to Malakian's growing presence as a songwriter and singer; whereas Serj Tankian's muscular ululations fronted most of the band's first three albums, Malakian -- whose caterwauling voice ranges somewhere between Geddy Lee (of Rush) and Pee Wee Herman -- shares equal time on "Mezmerize/Hypnotize," a mix that has caused some grumbling among the faithful. ...
Geddy Lee and Pee Wee Herman?? What a strange visual.
