The final episode of the heavy metal documentary show Metal Evolution aired this weekend in Canada on MuchMoreMusic (it can be viewed online from Canada) and will air next weekend on VH1 Classic in the US. The show is the brainchild of Rush documentary and Time Machine video filmmakers Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen and builds on the mission first put forth in his groundbreaking Metal: A Headbanger's Journey documentary - in which Geddy Lee had appeared. The final episode in the series (episode 11) focuses on the Progressive Metal genre of heavy metal and heavily featured Rush, including interview segments with all 3 members along with former producer Terry Brown. The band interview segments were conducted when Rush was in Cleveland last year for their April 15th show that was filmed for the Time Machine video. Geddy had also appeared in episode 2 of the series to discuss the contributions of American garage rock band Blue Cheer to the origins of heavy metal. Geddy's brother Allan Weinrib is the production manager for the show and has been the Executive Producer and Head of Production and Development at Banger Films (Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen's film production company) since December of last year. Good episode. Like #16,I also enjoyed seeing Queensryche recognized for their contribution to progressive hard rock. Despite my great disdain towards their most recent album 'Dedicated To Chaos' and the embarassing 'Cabaret' tour of 2010 the legacy of Queensryche circa 1983-1994 should NEVER be forgotten by future generations of hard rock fans. Since 1985 I have seen this band 22 consecutive times, virtually every concert tour of theirs' to date. I agree with Sam on the importance of 'Operation:Mindcrime',although speaking for myself,I'd say it's arguably the greatest hard rock record EVER recorded! Frankly, there hasn't been an album of that caliber since or after! Simply put, both Rush and Queensryche remain the epitomy of true progressive hard rock that has yet to be matched by ANYBODY on the scene today! Great comments everybody! Also to Sam and Scot,a job well done on this entire series! Thanks RIAB! Great thread.
My three favorite bands(Rush, Queensryche, and Tool) were all covered in this episode, and I loved it. It was nice to see Chris DeGarmo, too. I love the way he plays guitar. I was disappointed, however, that they weren't able to snag any of the members of Tool for interviews, especially since Danny Carey was in the Rush doc. Oh well...
Picking up on what someone else said about other docs; if any of you haven't seen the Foo Fighters documentary, "Back and Forth", I strongly urge you to do so, even if you're not a fan. It's good stuff.
I agree with #9 regarding Sam and Scot's work being top-knotch. However,I also think it's fair to say that they're both partial to Rush circa 1974-1978. To me,they seem to have some not-so-subtle disdain for "80's Rush". That said, the early years of Rush was their introduction to the band,so I can totally understand that sentiment. Nothing wrong with that at all! As I've said on other threads,I think all of us as Rush fans gravitate to certain eras of the band more than others. Sam and Scot are certainly no exception. So,if nothing else, like #9 said,at least they are fans of most of the bands they've documented throughout the 'Metal Evolution' series. Two rabid fans' perspective with a critical eye to match, which is what true music commentary and criticism is all about. Great thread and comments everybody! Thanks RIAB.
I'm going to have to check out Mastodon after watching this. I've somehow missed out on them.
The Banger Films guys are great. Very genuine, have a deep love of the music, and clearly want to learn more. I'm a Maiden fan, and even if you AREN'T a Maiden fan, you should check out Flight 666. It is shot beautifully.
You gotta believe the Metal Evolution series will come out on DVD sometime soon. I'll definitely be picking up a copy. It has been a blast to watch.
#12 - Deep Purple did that too with Headbanger's Journey. I understand why a lot of people categorize them that way as an influence but I've never thought of either of those bands (or Rush for that matter) as ever being heavy metal. There are parts of their catalogs that have some of that style and all those bands did their part to inspire what became metal but overall they just cover too much musical territory to be labeled that way.
Why is the starman's ass blurred out at 5:59? Isn't VH1 a cable show? Since went are butts offensive? lol
Seen a few episodes of Metal Evolution. they are well done. Had to laugh at Zeppelin' refusal to be in the show as they don't consider themselves metal.
You know what would be the ultimate Rush concert show for this year: Along with Rush performing new songs from the upcoming album Clockwork Angels, they should perform classic Rush songs from the 70's. That would be the ultimate classic Rush show that I would love to attend. Classic Rush all the way!
#7- That character Alex played in the Biggest Fans episode was one of the funniest things I've ever seen!
Everything Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn have done related to metal has been spot on. True fans of the music and the bands they have chosen to highlight. The fact that they have chosen Rush for 2 projects, and the quality product they put out shows that they are fans. Headbangers Journey, FLight 666 and Metal Evolution are also excellent. If you're a fan of metal in general, or of Iron Maiden (I know everyone here is a Rush fan, so it goes without saying) these guys are a voice out there for us, getting projects out there when the entire music industry has turned its back on metal/hard rock. Please support them by checking out their documentaries. I can't wait to see what they do next.
...nevermind, turns out it's not:
