I'd love to hear from drummers who Neil compares to current drummers out there. I know he was at the top of his game in the 1980s. But what about 2010? There are a bunch of truly excellent drummers out there these days such as Gavin Harrison or Keith Carlock who are absolutely amazing. So how does Neil compare to the newest batch of drummers?

how (not who)

voted, neil should sweep both categories.

#3 - Neil will not win best Prog Drummer. Mangini of Dream Theater will. Frankly, Neil hasn't been a prog drummer in many years, and that's why he hasn't won this award in many years. Neil is more of a straight-forward Rock drummer these days. But he will likely win best DVD.

Seize this voting! Modern Drummer should appoint Neil and a few others as Drummer Gods, immortals who don't need no stinking voting to tell the world of their greatness!

They already have. It's called the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame and Honor Roll.

#6 - yes this guy (Mangini) is good. I saw the Dream Theater show in LA a few months ago and he was very solid. Funny guy, too.

3. For my money, NP remains the greatest Master of the Kit of all time. Its the drum fan equivalent of being around when Leonardo Da Vinci was painting ceilings and we are lucky that he is still able to do it just as well as he ever has. Others who are around now may be quicker or whatever but its not allabout speed. For me, NP makes it for some special reasons. He was the pioneer and pathfinder of really technical playing that drew especial attention to the drums and still does today..how many air drummers are there at your typical gig of any music style? I've never seen anyone hit them harder as well and that includes John Bonham. Also, he is still at the very very top of his game..witness the technique on OLV or Far Cry and his solos get better and better. Awesome by any current player standards. There are countless excellent players with unbelievable skills, speeds and talents but their chops, beats, fills are not nearly as memorable to my ears and whilst they might be faster they lack the essential originality . They dont "make" the song. You won't see fans playing air drums to their chops in 10 or 20 years time,if they are still going then simply because they lack true originality but that's not their fault after all.

Yes, this is all true. But none of that qualifies NP for the best "Progressive" drummer in Modern Drummer's 2012 reader's poll.

I am shocked not to see Gavin Harrison on any list.

12. Noted.I was just feeding my own thoughts as a drummer in reply to Blog 3's comment.

#13-I know, right? They had SW's solo drummer in the mix but no GH! Mind boggling to say the least. I slotted him in as "other" which I am sure many more did as well.

#11 - I totally hear you on the issue of "essential originality" and "memorability" - that's probably what puts him on top of most drumming polls. He can turn a song around and get you hooked pretty quickly.

By the way, Carlock is not about speed or loudness at all. I guess he's more about technique. He's another example of a drummer who can drive the song/piece. See, for example,
