New Porcupine Tree album featuring Alex Lifeson releases tomorrow
1:58PM EST | comments (37) |

British prog-rock band Porcupine Tree releases their new album Fear of a Blank Planet tomorrow. The album features a guest appearance from Alex Lifeson on the 17-plus-minute track Anesthetize. The album is being offered on a regular CD format as well as a special 2-disk limited edition. The limited edition contains the stereo CD and a full 5.1 surround sound mix of the album on DVDV. Both discs are housed inside miniature card LP sleeves, and come in a box with a 40 page book of Lasse Hoile images. Samples from the new album can be heard at the band's MySpace page here.

In a recent interview with ProgArcives, frontman Steven Wilson was asked what it was like working alongside Alex Lifeson he had this to say:

... I really didn't know [Alex Lifeson] knew anything about Porcupine Tree until I read an interview with him in a British magazine. He mentioned really liking Porcupine Tree, and I fell of my chair when I read that because I grew up listening to Rush and I've always thought Alex was one of the most underrated guitarists in rock. So, I got in touch with him through the journalist, who had also done an interview with me around the same time, coincidentally. And we were right in the middle of writing at that time, so it was kind of an obvious thing to invite him to play on the record. It's like it's come full circle for me now, as the people I grew up listening to are now playing on Porcupine Tree records. So you can imagine the buzz, its incredible! ...

Thanks to Power Windows for the heads up.

Atlantic should take a lesson from PTree and Dream Theater and release a combo CD/DVD (w/5.1) instead of a separate product with a new effin' acronym (MVI, ugh).

DVDV? Is this some new format i have to learn about? Anyway, the PT album with Alex guesting sounds like i need to buy it from some comments here. Yeah, good way to pass the time till one of the greatest Rush albums ever. I looked for it in the BB & CC flyers but didn't see it advertised.

I highly recommend the DVD-A's of "Deadwing" and "In Abstentia" as well. Phenomenal sound.

Nice to see that you're "keeping the music coming" presto. Downloading IA as I speak, legally might I add. So far it kicks some serious ass!!!

I've heard this album. It's excellent. Anesthitize (sp?) is simply amazing, and Sleep Together is also an excellent track.

If you're new to the band start with In Absentia. "Wedding Nails" is an absolutely smoking instrumental. Gavin Harrison, to my ears, is a more interesting drummer than Peart these days (and this is coming from a hardcore Peart fan)... hyperkinetic, but tasty, with a great groove.

CD version, Limited Edition VDV 5.1 surround version, vinyl version, Special Edition DVD audio version, MDVD version- how many versions are record companies going to release these days.

To keep things simple lets just get mp3's with MUSIC and leave the multimedia extras to the official sites?
