UPDATE - 2/1@10:48AM: Chicago WLUP pre-sale password is LOOPRUSH.

UPDATE - 2/1@8:16AM: Reader Felix R sent me this scan of an advertisement from a local newspaper that confirms that tickets for the Coliseo de Puerto Rico show do indeed go on sale tomorrow and will be through TicketPop. There's still nothing on the TicketPop site regarding the event yet, but it should be up there by this afternoon.

UPDATE - 1/31@11:16PM: Reader windycitygirl reports that to get the Chicago WLUP-sponsored pre-sale password go to WLUP.com at 10AM tomorrow and click on Band of the Day.

UPDATE - 1/31@11:03PM: Nokia Theater pre-sale password is SNAKES (thanks mdingel).

UPDATE - 1/31@10:22PM: Manchester radio pre-sale is sponsored by ROCK 101 and the password is LUMPA (thanks tragedy32).

UPDATE - 1/31@10:16PM: Albuquerque pre-sale password is 94ROCK (thanks soozm32).

The 2nd round of Music Today fan pre-sales is now complete although several AMEX presales are ongoing and will continue through tomorrow for Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, Albuquerque, Los Angeles, Irvine, Chicago, Boston, Manchester, PNC Bank Center and Jones Beach. Remember, for the AMEX pre-sales the password is just the customer service 800 number (8003272177) on the back of your Gold Card.

A pre-sale sponsored by concert promoter Fantasma for the April 17th Jacksonville show is also ongoing and will continue through 5PM tomorrow. To find tickets go to this link and use the password ARROWS.

Several radio-sponsored pre-sales will also be happening tomorrow for the dates in Albuquerque (94 Rock), Los Angeles (KLOS), Irvine, Chicago (WLUP) and Manchester. Check the tour section for details. I don't have passwords for these pre-sales yet but I'm working on it and will hopefully have them before tomorrow. If anyone has them, please let me know.

Tickets for the opening night show in Puerto Rico went on pre-sale earlier this week through Music Today, but the status of regular ticket sales is still a bit fuzzy. The last I'd heard was that tickets were to go on sale to the general public this Saturday. TicketPop.com handles ticket sales for the Coliseo de Puerto Rico but they do not currently have the event listed. If anyone has any information please let us know.

Regular tickets for the following shows will go on sale this coming Saturday, February 2nd through Ticketmaster:

Apr. 15: Amway Arena - Orlando info
Apr. 13: BankAtlantic Center - Sunrise info
Apr. 17: Jacksonville Arena - Jacksonville info
Apr. 29: Journal Pavilion - Albuquerque info
Jun. 9: United Center - Chicago info
Jun. 15: Tweeter Center - Mansfield info
Jun. 27: Marcus Amphitheater Summerfest - Milwaukee info
Jul. 11: Verizon Wireless Arena - Manchester info
Jul. 12: PNC Bank Arts Center - Holmdel info
Jul. 14: Nikon at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh info

Just a quick note/reminder that all times given on this site and Ticketmaster are LOCAL to the venue. This always seems to be a point of confusion to some folks.

I've had several of you email me regarding information on Canadian ticket sales. Unfortunately at this point I don't know any more than you do. None of the Canadian venues even have the show listed. For the last leg, pre-sales for Canadian dates all occurred at the same time and were sponsored by Music Today but actually run through Ticketmaster. Check out this post and this post to see how it went. I can only assume that it'll follow a similar pattern this time around. I'll try to find out more though.

I also unfortunately don't have any further information on Mexican and South American dates. Like I said before though, no news is good news. I'll be sure to post anything that I learn.

You may have noticed this by now, especially if you live near Dallas, but the Smirnoff Centre has had a name change; it's now the Superpages.com Center. Whatever. Is it just me or does that just sound plain stupid? :) One of these days I hope to open a Rushisaband.com Center; I will book no acts but Rush and free beer for everyone.

I found this interesting article over at Counterparts courtesy user 18% Gray. It talks about how ticket brokers employ automated bots to manipulate online ticketing systems. It may give you a little more sympathy for why Ticketmaster has so many restrictions in place (image verification, limited number of refreshs, etc.). It's pretty much all to keep out automated ticket bots. It's a very interesting read.

Reader malterb let me know that the official site for Summerfest in Milwaukee (which Rush will headline on June 27th) has our boys featured front and center on their home page. Very nice.

Reader RicoRoq pointed out that Rush's June 5th show at Red Rocks will be the 25th anniversary of U2's famous performance there. U2 released two tracks from a Red Rocks concert on June 5, 1983 on their 1983 live album, Under a Blood Red Sky and a full concert-length video of the same appearance, segments of which were frequently shown on MTV. Neil Peart mentions in one of his books that this video is what made Rush want to someday play Red Rocks. Speaking of Red Rocks, the rumor about them adding a second show there is still just that - a rumor.

And as a reminder, Music Today has graciously offered to run a promotion exclusively for Rush Is A Band readers - just like on the last leg. Three lucky readers will be randomly picked to receive a Limited-Edition Rush T-Shirt. To enter the Rush Is A Band T-Shirt Giveaway, email the following information to riabbiggestfanzz@aol.com.

* First and Last Name
* T Shirt Size
* Age
* Mailing Address
* Phone Number

Email entries will be accepted until Friday, February 29th. Winners will be picked and notified by Music Today the week of March 4th - March 8th. A big thanks to Music Today for doing this again - it was a big success on the 2007 leg.

That's all for now. I should have some more non-tour-related updates tommorrow.

Fly Paper from Tiles releases today
10:37AM EST | link | comments (39) |

Today is the official North American release of Fly Paper - the 5th album from Detroit prog-rockers Tiles. The album is notable to Rush fans because of its numerous connections to Rush; Alex Lifeson plays on the track Sacred and Mundane, the album was produced by Terry Brown, and Hugh Syme did the album art in addition to playing keyboards on 2 tracks.

Fly Paper is a very solid progressive hard rock album that I think most Rush fans would enjoy, and Alex Lifeson's guitar contributions on Sacred and Mundane are absolutely brilliant and really shape the song. The 3-minute mp3 edit of the track which was released online last month really does not do the full (nearly 6-minute) version justice. There were plans to release a promotional video for this song in the run-up to the album release, but due to the band having to change production companies things are a bit behind schedule. It should be forthcoming in a few weeks. I've been listening to the album off and on for the last couple of weeks and can honestly say I've really enjoyed it. Outside of Sacred and Mundane my favorite track is the opener Hide In My Shadow. It has a catchy, very Rush-like riff and the layered, haunting vocals in the chorus conjure up visions of Alice in Chains. The entire album is quite good and I definitely recommend it to any fan of progressive rock.

To mark the album's release, Tiles has revamped their website and I highly suggest you check it out to learn a bit more about the band, the album and all the Rush connections. You can actually download mp3 versions of 2 of the tracks off the album; Back and Forth and Crowded Emptiness. There's also this great interview with Tiles guitarist Chris Herin at Morow.com. Several reviews of the album are also available online: Music Connection, Progscape.com, Ytsejam.com, MetalExpressRadio.com.

Tiles will be performing a casual 45-minute set at Record Time in Roseville, MI this Saturday, Feb. 2nd and the official Fly Paper CD release party will occur on Sunday, March 9th at the Magic Bag Theater in Ferndale, MI. For details, see the Tiles website.

Chris Herin was also kind enough to agree to answer a few questions from yours truly. And as a bonus - he even forwarded on a few questions to Terry Brown too! I should have their answers in a future post; hopefully sometime later this week.

Learn Rush songs from Alex Lifeson himself
9:53PM EST | link | comments (31) |

Teacher LerxstLast month I let you know about an Atlanta startup company called iVideosongs. This online company planned to sell virtual music lessons online, featuring video downloads of guitar pros demonstrating their playing technique. iVideosongs just recently went live with their website which you can check out here. Among the featured guitar pros is Alex Lifeson. You can learn how to play Limelight, The Spirit of Radio and Tom Sawyer directly from Lerxst himself. Each downloadable video is shot in high definition with a 1280x720 resolution, is around 35-45 minutes long, and costs $9.99. Reader Lee B downloaded Limelight and reported the following:

He takes you through the song step by step from the intro, verse, chorus and the best bit the solo!! Not to mention the outro which he seems to enjoy! No effects just him and his PRS and Switchblade! Then he performs the whole track live! WOW!!! (Great interview and tab is also included in the download)

This sounds really cool. You can also watch a short preview of each video before you buy it. According to this CNET article, the company currently has about 50 songs in the database (most taught by instructors, the rest by the original artis) but there are 300 lined up and ready to go. They will be released in small batches and by the end of the year they expect the catalog to reach 1,000 songs.

Updates and other random Rush stuff
11:09PM EST | link | comments (176) |

S&A liveUPDATE - 1/29@1:05PM: The news about the 2nd Red Rocks show still seems to be in the rumor stage at this point. However, it looks like the first show has sold out - so it could happen. I'll see what I can find out.

UPDATE - 1/27@8:14PM: I'm hearing reports that 103.5 The Fox (sponsor of this past Friday's Red Rocks pre-sale) out of Denver is saying that Rush will be adding a second Red Rocks show on June 4th with an official announcement tomorrow. Thanks to Vischum for the heads up. This would mean that they'd be playing an unprecedented 3 shows in 3 days (Boise on the 3rd, Red Rocks on the 4th,5th) - something they did not do on the first leg. I'll try to find out more and see if I can verify this.

It goes without saying that the 2008 tour news has dominated the Rush landscape in the past week. Ever since the official tour announcement last Friday the online Rush community has been engrossed in the search for where, when and how to buy the best tickets. I've been trying to help out the best I can; the tour section is up and running with all the various pre-sale and on-sale date information loaded in, and I've been adding updates to the various posts as I gather new information. I've also modified the news ticker at the top of the home page to display strictly tour information and nothing else. This will be in place for the next month or so. The information is updated every ten minutes and it all ties in with the data in the tour section. So whenever a date is coming up for pre-sale or on-sale, you'll see a call-out for it in the ticker along with links for more information or to buy tickets. For the next couple of weeks, Ticketmaster will be updating its Rush pages on a daily if not hourly basis - adding new pre-sales and on-sale dates, along with other tour-related information. So rather than continuously updating posts every time Ticketmaster sneezes, I'm just going to make all the updates straight into the tour section. If there's a significant tour-related news item (such as adding a new date or canceling one) I'll still post about it of course. But if a show just adds a pre-sale or something, I'll just put it into the tour section. Keep sending me any and all info you come across, you guys have all been a great help to me in trying to keep up with all the news.

The first round of pre-sales is coming to a close and tickets begin to go on regular sale tomorrow along with the second round of AMEX pre-sales. For all the details, check out the tour section or the TOUR ALERT Ticker at the top of the page. There will be Music Today fan pre-sales for all of the North American (unsure about Puerto Rico though) dates in the coming weeks. These will generally occur the Tuesday through Thursday the week prior to the tickets going on regular sale. When they are officially announced I will enter them into the tour section. So next week we should expect fan pre-sales for the dates in Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale, Houston, Albuquerque, Chicago, Mansfield, Milwaukee, Manchester, Holmdel and Wantagh.

Folks who participated in the Music Today fan pre-sales this past week also had the opportunity of pre-ordering the new Snakes & Arrows Live double CD along with their purchase. Unfortunately we know very few details about this release other than that it's coming sometime in April. From the Music Today promotional images we can extract what we can probably assume will be the album cover (see right), and we know it's a double live CD so we have an idea of the length - but that's about it. Hopefully more details will be forthcoming soon.

Before getting on with all the Rush tidbits we may have missed in the past week, I have a very sad bit of news to report. Longtime Rush friend and publicist Shelley Nott passed away last week. She had been battling cancer for quite some time. Neil Peart had sent out a MySpace bulletin regarding this last week, but there was a question about its authenticity so I never mentioned it. I wanted to be completely sure before reporting it. Reader camraey located the obituary online. Here it is:

2008-01-19 - Shelley Nott, of GTA

NOTT- Shelley. Peacefully passed away on January 19, 2008. Loving wife of Rich Vineyard. Beloved daughter of Marilyn, Robbie and Larry. Sadly missed by Alex Chen, Aunt Helen, Uncle John, Lori and Steve and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Shelley will also be greatly missed by RUSH, Ray, Nancy, Sheila and all her friends and associates in the entertainment industry. Family and friends are invited to YORK VISITATION CHAPEL & RECEPTION CENTRE, 160 Beecroft Rd. (1blk north of Sheppard, 1blk west of Yonge) 416-221-3404 on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 for a visitation from 12:00pm- 1:00pm. A celebration on Shelley's life will be held at 1:00pm. A reception will follow. In memory of Shelley, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. A private family burial will take place at a later date.

Let's all send our thoughts and prayers out to Shelley's family and friends. If you'd like to make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society in Shelley's memory, you can do so online at this link.

The official Rush mySpace page (yes, they have one in case you didn't know) launched its new look earlier today. It looks really cool.

The Rush Backstage Club is running a sale on Snakes & Arrows 2007 t-shirts. Many of these styles will be discontinued in early April before the new tour begins so this'll be your last chance to get them.

A few weeks ago I let you know that the Trailer Park Boys movie would be making its US big-screen debut today. It'll be shown at various AMC Theatres across the US in the next few weeks. It opened tonight in New York, Burbank and Orange County. To check out all the theatres and showtimes go to the official US release website. Thanks to reader Tomas D for the heads up. In case you don't know, the popular Canadian TV series the Trailer Park Boys made its big screen debut in Canada back in October of 2006. The movie was a resounding success garnering the highest opening-weekend gross of any English-language homegrown film. Alex Lifeson was heavily involved in the making of the film's soundtrack (Geddy Lee also participated) and also got a cameo as a cop in the movie. The film is also riddled with Rush references including a movie marquee which lists several Rush song titles as movies.

American heavy metal band Iced Earth is accepting applications for a new bass player. For one of the requirements you must play ... a minimum of four songs of varying tempos from ICED EARTH or a combination of songs from ICED EARTH and legendary bands such as IRON MAIDEN, BLACK SABBATH or RUSH. Pick well-known songs with challenging bass lines. :)

Slowpoke is a weekly comic strip by Jen Sorensen that appears in alternative weeklies and other publications in the United States. This weeks politically-themed comic contains a Geddy Lee reference. Thanks to Tom M for the heads up.

And if you're in the market for a new boat, check out this pic sent in by Thomas P. If nothing else, the boat has a cool name. :)

That's all for now. Have a great weekend and I hope everyone manages to get great tickets for the tour.

Rush 2008 tour ticket sales update
10:20PM EST | link | comments (118) |

S&A liveUPDATE - 1/25@5:00PM: The PNC Bank Center show on July 12th will also go on AMEX pre-sale tomorrow at 10AM and the St. Louis show on June 28th will go on AMEX pre-sale February 25th.

UPDATE - 1/25@1:33PM: Sorry I forgot to mention that there's a radio pre-sale for the Detroit show going on as well; it will run until 10PM. The password is SNAKES.

UPDATE - 1/25@1:22PM: Ticketing info for the Philly show at the Wachovia Center is now up at comcastTix.com; tickets go on sale Saturday, February 9th (thanks PhillyMike).

UPDATE - 1/25@9:35AM: Alfa Rock out of Puerto Rico is airing that tickets for the Coliseo show will go on sale Saturday, February 2nd through TicketPop. I'll assume this info is correct unless I hear otherwise. Thanks to betorush for the heads up. Remember that radio pre-sales for both Vegas and Phoenix go on sale at 10AM today (local venue time). See the updates below for passwords.

UPDATE - 1/25@7:34AM: The Phoenix radio pre-sale today is sponsored by KDKD-FM and the password is KDKB (thanks Sean).

UPDATE - 1/24@10:55PM: Reader dedlift let us know that the Vegas radio pre-sale tomorrow is sponsored by KOMP FM and the password is KOMP.

UPDATE - 1/24@9:42PM: Ticketmaster has made some updates recently. There are radio pre-sales scheduled for both the Vegas show and the Phoenix show from 10AM to 10PM tomorrow (local time). I'm unsure of which radio stations are sponsoring these pre-sales at this time though (if you hear anything, let us know). There's also on-sale/pre-sale information up for the LA Nokia Theatre show on May 6th; tickets go on sale Sunday, February 3rd and there's an AMEX pre-sale and a KLOS-sponsored radio pre-sale. See here for details. I'm also hearing that a 2nd show has been negotiated - but no details yet.

UPDATE - 1/24@3:23PM: Here's some good news for those planning on seeing Rush at Summerfest in Milwaukee on June 27th. Lawn seats for this show will be FREE! This is also a good time to point out that several of the outdoor venues on the tour will likely run similar lawn promotions; buy one get one free, $10 for lawn, kids free with adult purchase, etc. Just keep an eye out for these types offers at the venue you plan on attending.

UPDATE - 1/24@2:11PM: Tickets for the Puerto Rico show could go on sale as soon as tomorrow or Saturday from what I'm hearing. There's a page up at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico website for the event, but no specifics on when tickets go on sale or links to purchase them. They only say that the tickets will be between $45 and $150 (quite a range) and TicketPop will most likely handle the sale. More as I learn it.

UPDATE - 1/24@11:00AM: I think I'd mentioned this before, but a lot of folks still seem to not be clear on it. There will be Music Today fan pre-sale for all of the North American (unsure about Puerto Rico though) dates in the coming weeks. These will generally occur the Tuesday through Thursday the week prior to the tickets going on regular sale. They haven't been officially announced so I haven't entered them into the tour section yet, except for when I get some independent confirmation (like with the Chicago date for instance - that's entered in already thanks to info passed to me from dinorushman). Music Today will likely announce the pre-sales for the coming weeks by the Monday prior to tickets going on regular sale for that date. So next week we should expect fan pre-sales for the dates in Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale, Houston, Albuquerque, Chicago, Mansfield, Milwaukee, Manchester, Holmdel and Wantagh.

UPDATE - 1/24@7:31AM: The AMEX pre-sale for the Bank Atlantic Center show on April 13th will begin this Saturday, January 26th at 10AM rather than January 27th as I had previously reported. I'm not sure if I had it wrong before, or if they had just changed it. Either way, I've updated the tour section along with this post with the correct information. Thanks to Robert B for the heads up.

UPDATE - 1/23@10:39PM: I forgot to mention that there will be a radio pre-sale for the Red Rocks show Friday from 10AM to 6PM. It is sponsored by 103.5 The Fox and run through Ticketmaster. The password is SNAKES.

The Music Today pre-sale frenzy is on and will continue through tomorrow at noon (local venue time) for the shows in New Orleans, Phoenix, Reno, Las Vegas and Detroit; the Red Rocks pre-sale has been closed. To check out what tickets are available go here. For details and instructions on how to register and participate in the pre-sale check this post. In addition to the pre-sale, Music Today is running a Snakes & Arrows Live pre-order promotion. All fans who purchase pre-sale tickets in addition to pre-ordering the CD will be entered into a contest to win a Meet-and-Greet with the band and a possible signed hard cover tour book collection. Details in this post.

Just like back on the 2007 leg, Music Today has also graciously offered to run a promotion exclusively for Rush Is A Band readers. Three lucky readers will be randomly picked to receive a Limited-Edition Rush T-Shirt. To enter the Rush Is A Band T-Shirt Giveaway, email the following information to riabbiggestfanzz@aol.com.

* First and Last Name
* T Shirt Size
* Age
* Mailing Address
* Phone Number

Email entries will be accepted until Friday, February 29th. Winners will be picked and notified by Music Today the week of March 4th - March 8th. A big thanks to Music Today for doing this again - it was a big success on the 2007 leg.

Regular ticket sales for the 6 dates currently on pre-sale will begin this Saturday. In addition to the Music Today pre-sales, AMEX pre-sales for these 6 dates are ongoing and will run through Friday. I'm not really sure why, but for the New Orleans show Ticketmaster has posted a notice on their website indicating that only residents of Louisiana, Mississippi, S. Alabama, and the panhandle of Florida are eligible to purchase tickets. AMEX pre-sales for the following dates will begin over the weekend and early next week:

Saturday, January 26

Sun, Apr 13 - BankAtlantic Center - Sunrise, FL [info]
Mon, Jun 9 - United Center - Chicago, IL [info]
Sun, Jun 15 - Tweeter Center - Mansfield, MA [info]
Sat, Jul 12 - PNC Bank Arts Center - Holmdel, NJ [info]
Mon, Jul 14 - Nikon at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh, NY [info]

Sunday, January 27

Sun, May 11 - Verizon Wireless Amphitheater - Irvine, CA [info]

Monday, January 28

Tue, Apr 15 - Amway Arena - Orlando, FL [info]

* NOTE: Not all AMEX cardholders may be eligible - certain pre-sales are only open to AMEX Gold Card members. If prompted, the password should be either AMEX or the 10-digit customer service 800 number on the back of your card (don't include the leading 1). Check this link for details.

Ticketmaster has also added a link to information for the Trump Taj Mahal show at the Marc Etess Arena in Atlantic City on July 4th.

I don't think that there's anything posted up on their website yet, but WLUP out of Chicago will be giving away primo tickets to the June 9th United Center show next week. Listen starting Monday to win tickets in the 5th row, 4th row tickets on Tuesday, 3rd row on Wednesday, 2nd row on Thursday and front row seats on Friday. To win the tickets just be the 15th caller at 591-ROCK when you hear a Rush twofer between the hours of 10AM and 10PM all next week.

The folks at RushCon are in the early stages of planning for RushCon 8. They are looking at summer dates. I'll take a wild guess and say it'll be somewhere around the July 9th show in Toronto. :)

Here's one from the rumor mill. I've been unable to get any solid information about this but caspertn over at Counterparts reported that last evening on 98.1 WXMX out of Memphis, after coming out of playing The Larger Bowl, the DJ said that a possible Rush date could be added very soon; no other details were offered. There was a date pending at the FedEx Forum for quite some time that didn't materialize. Again, I have absolutely no solid information on this - take it for what it is.

I'll end with a few notes on the whole ticket-buying experience in general. I get a lot of questions from readers asking me what the best way to get tickets is. I never try to pretend that I have a good answer to that question. If you ask ten different people this same question chances are you will get ten different answers. There are several options available to get tickets; various pre-sales, regular ticket sales, Ticketmaster auctions, ticket brokers, eBay or even Craigslist. Basically it comes down to what level of seating you are willing to settle for and how much you are willing to pay. I'd suggest that everyone do their research; ask around, check out the comments on this site and other sites, try out the pre-sales to see what's available, browse the eBay and Ticketmaster auctions, etc. But you don't necessarily need to rush (pun intended) into anything; even if the show sells out, you'll probably be able to get tickets somehow right up to the date of the show. Yeah... the ticket prices are outrageous I agree. But let's just be thankful that Rush is still out there and touring. :)

1) Register your email address with Music Today

The first step is to confirm your email address through Music Today via this page. Simply enter your email address and click Sign Me Up. Assuming your email is not already registered, you will then be sent an email to the address you entered where you will be given a link that you need to click on to confirm. Your email address may already be registered and confirmed if you had registered on the 2007 leg. If it is then the next page you'll see after clicking sign me up is the Fan Community page.

Once your email is registered and confirmed you can set up your account (assuming you don't already have one) at this link.

3) View tickets

Once you are registered and your account is set up you can go to the Music Today fan community calendar page to view dates for which a pre-sale is offered. Tickets will become available tomorrow (Tuesday, Jan. 22) at 10AM local venue time and a link will appear next to the date to view/purchase tickets. You'll then be asked about how many tickets you want and where you'd like to sit. The system will then find some tickets for you.

4) Purchase tickets or try again

If the tickets you are offered are to your liking you may then purchase them. If not, release the tickets and keep trying. The presale will run through 12PM (again - local venue time) on Thursday.

Along with the pre-sale, you can pre-order the new Snakes & Arrows Live CD and a new exclusive t-shirt. When you order tickets and the CD or t-shirt you will be automatically entered to win a meet and greet with the band at your show (one winner plus guest per city).

Updates and other random Rush stuff
3:19PM EST | link | comments (137) |

UPDATE - 1/21@12:17PM: From what I can gather, the AMEX presale password should be either AMEX or the 10-digit customer service 800 number on the back of your card (don't include the leading 1). Certain pre-sales may also just be for AMEX Gold Card members. You'll need to check with AMEX/Ticketmaster for any details beyond that.

UPDATE - 1/20@6:46PM: The Patriots just beat the Chargers 21-12 for the AFC championship and a trip to the Super Bowl. :) Thanks to jprager87 for the heads up.

UPDATE - 1/20@5:30PM: Had the Vegas date wrong - should be May 10th. Fixed now.

It's been an extremely exciting past few days in Rush-land. The 2008 tour dates are out and details regarding the new Snakes & Arrows Live CD should be revealed tomorrow. My guess is there'll be a pre-order promotion via MusicToday similar to what they did with Snakes & Arrows on the 2007 leg. We may also get some news regarding the rumored live Workin' Them Angels single. Pre-sales for select shows begin next week with regular ticket sales starting next Saturday. Here's the ticket pre-sale/on-sale picture for the upcoming week:

There were a few minor Rush news items which were overshadowed by the tour news over the last week so I thought I'd get those covered here. But first I'll address that little tour box you see at the top of this page.

I've spent a good part of the weekend loading up all the 2008 tour dates into the tour section. If you weren't around for the 2007 leg you may be unfamiliar with the tour section and how it works. With each date I list the pre-sale information where appropriate, the ticket sale information and then a few links to tourdate-specific comment threads. This information is all dynamic; which means that once the pre-sale ends for a given date, the pre-sale info goes away - stuff like that. So all the information is up-to-date. After the show is over, there'll also be links to post your reviews and photos if you have them. I've also turned the home page tour feature back on. This feature basically allows you to select one particular tour date from the drop down and just see info for that date. It will default to the next upcoming date - which up until April 11th will be the Puerto Rico date. But you can also choose to set a date as your default. Just click the set as tourdate default link when viewing a particular date. Then each time you come back to the site that default date will appear. If you don't like having the tour date stuff cluttering up the home page you also have the option of turning it off. Just click the Turn special Rush Tour section off link (just under the Blogospheres heading). If you notice any errors with my information (wrong ticket link, wrong presale info, etc.) please let me know. I may be adding some new features in the near future too if time allows.

Now that we know the tour itinerary (at least for North America) I thought I'd update the poll question and ask folks how many shows they plan on attending. Take the poll and let us know.

In the last poll I asked you what your favorite live Rush album is. Exit... Stage Left barely edged out Rush in Rio 29% to 28% for the win. I guess I'll have to ask this question again in a few months now that we'll soon have yet another live album to throw into the mix. :)

I wanted to take a second to thank everybody who generously donated to the site in the past week. It is greatly appreciated. If you want to help out too you can donate via PayPal through this link (or use the button to the right). Any donation of $3 or more and you'll receive a RUSH IS A BAND bumper sticker as a thank you gift.

Neil Peart graces the cover of the most recent edition of the American Musical Supply catalog. Thanks to reader Anthony H for the heads up and cover scan.

Reader showdonttell25 let me know that Working Man will be made available for download for the Rock Band video game the week of January 29th. Harmonix just recently made Limelight available for download, and Tom Sawyer is one of the featured tracks that comes included with the game.

Last week we learned that Gibson would showcase the Alex Lifeson signature ES-355 guitar at the Winter NAMM show over the weekend. Reader Daren found this this great pic of the guitar online.

Reader pblaster let me know that in celebration of the announcement of Rush's April 19th show in New Orleans, WKBU-FM has announced a Canadian Invasion Weekend where they'll be playing lots of Rush along with other Canadian artists.

Way back on the Power Windows tour Neil Peart did a drum seminar in Ft. Wayne Indiana. Reader karissas1fan recently obtained some rare pictures from this seminar and I've shared them here.

Here's an interesting article which describes how conductor Jonathon Stockhammer drew inspiration from Rush in developing ideas for his classical concert. Thanks to Al for the heads up.

Rush 2008 tour date questions and answers
2:59PM EST | link | comments (245) |

Rush Snakes & Arrows TourUPDATE - 1/18@3:56PM: The Quebec City 400th anniversary concert will not occur in July as I'd originally thought. It will take place on the Plains of Abraham on August 22nd. Celine Dion (yippee) will headline. Currently from what I know Rush is still penciled in to appear along with Bryan Adams, Sum 41, The Tragically Hip, Nickelback and others. So if the South American dates occur in early August it looks like Rush would then head back to Canada to close out the tour in style in front of their largest crowd ever. Cool.

I've been inundated with questions about the tour over the last several hours. So I decided rather than try to respond to everyone individually, I'd put up one post where I'll attempt to address everyone's questions/concerns as best I can with the information I know. First I'll re-post the tour date list just to keep it above the fold and have it available for reference.

1) How does the fan pre-sale work? How do I sign up?

First off, there is NO OFFICIAL RUSH FAN CLUB. :) Rush thankfully does not charge outrageous fees to their fans for the privilege of access to their pre-sale. However, you do need to sign up for the pre-sale through Music Today. That's step one. You simply go to the Music Today Rush pre-sale site and enter in your email address. Then you'll be on their email list and have access to their systems. The first round of pre-sales will occur next week from Tuesday, January 22nd to Thursday, January 24th for the following shows: New Orleans, Phoenix, Reno, Las Vegas, Red Rocks and Detroit. Fan pre-sales for subsequent shows will happen the Tuesday-Thursday the week prior to the regular tickets going on sale. I'll have a lot more details regarding the fan pre-sale in the coming days, don't worry. In the meantime, you can check out some of the posts from last March to see how the pre-sale worked on the last leg. Just go to the March 2007 site archive and check out all the posts towards the end of the month (the official tour date announcement in 2007 was on March 26th).

In addition to the fan pre-sales, there are various AMEX, Ticketmaster and radio-station-sponsored pre-sales that will take place on a per-show basis. Check Ticketmaster, AMEX or your local radio station for details on these. I'll also try to provide details or at least a heads up as these pre-sales start.

2) What happened to South America?

From what I'm hearing South America is still on. Be comforted by the fact that the band doesn't even mention it at all in their press release. No news is good news. Right now they are still attempting to work out the logistics. The original plan was to move from Puerto Rico to South America and then Mexico. This plan got completely turned on its head in recent weeks. I'm not clear on the specific issues involved in why the South American dates had to be shifted out to August, but that's what happened. So right now they are trying to confirm dates/venues and if/when they do, I'm sure they'll let us know.

3) What happened to the Mexico dates?

Those are still on too, but will now be part of the South American route. The plan is to go through Mexico on down to South America.

4) What happened to Atlantic Canada?

I know that no answer will satiate you Atlantic Canadians - and I don't blame you. But I'll give it a shot anyways. Once again, the abrupt change in plans mentioned above in 2) caused the band to completely rethink their routing. The short answer is that Atlantic Canada just did not work out with the modified schedule. Once it was apparent the South American dates would not happen in May, they had to scramble to shore up the Eastern US venues before other artists/events did. The Maine show was knocked out, then Rhode Island and from that point it just came down to logistics and cost of travel in between shows; Atlantic Canada just didn't fit in unfortunately. They instead found that a Montreal show would fit in, and went for that instead.

5) What about the Quebec City 400th anniversary show?

UPDATE - 1/18@3:56PM: The Quebec City 400th anniversary concert will not occur in July as I'd originally thought. Cool.

I'd first mentioned a while back that the band may play at the 400th anniversary of Quebec City celebration this July. They are still trying to finalize plans for this. This is partly the reason you don't see a Quebec City gig on the tour itinerary. This may still happen if they can fit it in.

6) What about the potential second show in Puerto Rico?

The band had originally left the option open for a second show after the first in Puerto Rico assuming it sold well. That second show morphed into the late addition of the Ft. Lauderdale show. However, they have left open the possibility of adding the second show on the day before - April 10th.

7) What about the potential second show at the Nokia Theatre in LA?

They still plan on adding this. That's why there are 4 open days after the May 6th show there.

8) When will you update your tour section with the 2008 dates?

Soon. :)

Hopefully this will allay some of the concerns many of you had. More to come.

No more speculating; there will be a live CD. There also is no mention of South America. I don't know what's up with that; hopefully some details will be forthcoming. I fixed the May dates - the low-fi version of Rush.com had them a bit mixed up.

UPDATE - 1/18@8:02AM: US and Canadian dates are up! Check them out here.

UPDATE - 1/18@7:29AM: Good morning. Dates are starting to pop up on Ticketmaster. That Pittsburgh show is going to happen on July 2nd. It also looks like January 26th will be the date the first round of tickets go on sale; this is the case for the Detroit show with pre-sales beginning on the Tuesday Monday prior (Jan. 21). Also, in case you missed it - in the last update to my previous post late last night I indicated that the Milwaukee show is a go and will occur on June 27th at the Marcus Amphitheater.

The Rush.com email list just sent out an email stating that the official tour dates announcement will be at 8AM. I did not receive the email yet myself and most of you probably didn't either. Their email list seems to take forever to get out to everyone on the list. And there were a lot of problems with their last email; a bunch of people got duplicate emails while a bunch more received nothing. Luckily reader rush-tours-rule forwarded me his copy. Here's what it says:

It's official! The 2008 Snakes & Arrows Live Tour will be announced Friday, January 18th at 8am EST at http://www..RUSH.com . For full tour details, including onsales and fan club presales, please stay tuned to the website.

So we can all go to bed now. See you back here at 8AM! I'll be updating this post with the official dates as soon as we get them. Also... notice how they refer to it as the Snakes & Arrows Live tour?? Remember when I mentioned those rumors about a live CD? This makes me think those rumors are true. :)

UPDATE - 1/18@12:03AM: It's official - Rush.com sent out an email. The dates will be announced tomorrow at 8AM. I have a post up where I'll put the official dates when we get them. I'll stop updating this post now. But before I do... I have one last update. The Milwaukee date is on but it will be at the Marcus Amphitheater instead of the US Cellular Arena and will take place on June 27th. Thanks to dcd2112 for the heads up.

UPDATE - 1/17@9:40PM: Ticketmaster now has info for the St. Louis show at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. They have it set for June 28th with tickets on sale March 1st. Thanks to Tom for the heads up.

UPDATE - 1/17@9:02PM: I have a tentative date of July 9th for the Toronto show at the Molson Amphitheater. It may change but it should be thereabouts at least. Thanks dinorushman for the info!

UPDATE - 1/17@2:33PM: Here is a hidden livenation link for the Albuquerque show that reader Bruce dug up. It lists the on-sale date as Saturday, Feb. 2 at 10AM and also has information for a radio-sponsored pre-sale through KZRR. This tells me that they may have delayed the date for the first round of ticket sales to Saturday February 2nd rather than January 26th. This would not surprise me at all in light of all the other delays. It's looking more and more likely that tomorrow will be the big day for the tour announcement.

UPDATE - 1/17@10:09AM: Several more dates! It's starting to all come together. The Dallas show at Smirnoff is a go and will occur on April 25th. Also a go is the Reno Events Center show; it will happen on May 3rd. The Gorge show will be on May 31st, the Clark County Amphitheater show will be on June 1st, Red Rocks on June 5th, the Verizon Wireless show in Manchester on July 11th, the Philadelphia show at Wachovia on June 14th, and the Hersheypark Stadium show will be on July 17th. Many thanks to dinorushman for the info.

UPDATE - 1/16@9:41PM: Ok. I managed to confuse myself. There are just too damn many Verizon Wireless Arenas! There is no Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, MA - it's in Manchester, NH... and it's not pending. :) Thanks to Jack for pointing it out.

UPDATE - 1/16@9:32PM: The Manchester, NH date should be in the pending column; I'd just forgotten it yesterday. One note on when tickets go on sale. They won't all go on sale January 26th; just the first batch of dates. Pre-sales typically occur the week prior. If the fan pre-sale works like it did last time, it will occur on the Tuesday prior to tickets going on sale. Then there may also be a Ticketmaster and/or AMEX pre-sale a day or two prior.

UPDATE - 1/16@5:05PM: OOPS! Meant May 11th for the Irvine show... fat fingers.

UPDATE - 1/16@4:40PM: The Irvine show will occur on May 15th 11th and the LA show has been moved to pending for the time being.

UPDATE - 1/16@1:36PM: WAAF out of Boston is listing the Tweeter Center show as happening on June 15th (thanks Cindy). I also have another pending date to report; the Constellation Performing Arts Center (CMAC) in Rochester, NY (thanks Scott).

UPDATE - 1/16@9:58AM: I'd forgotten to add the SPAC in Saratoga Springs to the pending list. I also wanted to clear up some confusion on something related to this venue. On their website, they still have a rotating image banner up from last summer on their concerts page which shows the June 30, 2007 Rush show. This banner is outdated; they really need to take it down. It appears that they might do a show there this summer but it will not be on June 30th.

Hopefully this will be my last post before the release of the official tour dates. Still no news on when that will occur though; it could be any minute now (or a couple days from now). I've shuffled and reorganized my list a bit, splitting out the Canadian and South American venues, which haven't really changed much at all. Where the picture is the most fuzzy is with the US dates, especially in the East and Midwest. It appears that most of the US venues are shifting to favor the outdoor sheds. The St. Louis show looks like it will now take place at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre rather than the Scottrade Center. The Boston show has moved from TD Banknorth Garden to the Tweeter Center and/or . The Hershey, PA show will be at the Hersheypark Stadium Star Pavilion rather than the Giant Center.

I've also received a lot of new pending venues, most of which are outdoor facilities. New to the list are the Reno Events Center in Reno, NV; the Bank Atlantic Center in Ft. Lauderdale, FL; the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, MA; the Post Gazette Pavilion in Pittsburgh, PA; the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Indianapolis, IN; the i Wireless Center in Moline, IL; the Sleep Train Pavilion in Concord, CA; the Nissan Pavilion in Washington D.C.; and the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, MN. I'm also moving some dates from the regular venue list into the pending column because I've received conflicting information; Columbus, Oakland, Hartford, Charlottesville and Austin. All 5 of these are indoor venues and I suspect they may have been dropped in favor of some outdoor sheds.

I apologize for the fuzzy nature of things. There are an unusually large number of venue holds in place for the tour and the South American dates moving from May to August really threw a wrench into things. We'll see how accurate this information turns out to be soon enough. More as I learn it...

Gibson announces Alex Lifeson ES-355 signature edition
3:13PM EST | link | comments (44) |

Alex Lifeson and his Gibson ES-355[Gibson Custom to Showcase Over 15 New Models at Winter NAMM 2008]

Alex Lifeson has mentioned in some recent interviews that he'd be releasing a signature Gibson ES-355 guitar this year although there had been no official word from Gibson until just recently. Yesterday Gibson Custom announced that it will showcase over 15 models at its exhibit at Winter NAMM 2008 in Anaheim, CA this coming weekend including the Alex Lifeson ES-355 VOS:

Throughout most of Alex Lifeson's ride to superstardom with the super group Rush, a 1976 Gibson ES-355 had been by his side, both in the studio and on stage. With it, he had created many of Rush's breathtaking layered soundscapes, and the very same ES-355 continues to be an indispensable part of his live arsenal. The Gibson Custom Shop Alex Lifeson Signature ES -355 guitar is a recreation of this iconic instrument and a tribute for a true modern master, and guitar he used to expand the definition of popular music.

Rush 2008 tour date announcement open thread update
9:53PM EST | link | comments (300) |

Rush Snakes & Arrows TourUPDATE - 1/15@9:47AM: The Rush.com mailing list has sent out the following news regarding dates:

Are you ready? Stay tuned to RUSH.COM in the coming days for more information on the upcoming RUSH Snakes and Arrows 2008 tour. For now, we can tell you this - new cities have been added, and the tour of originally 40 show dates will now stop in over 45 cities!

This jibes with what I've been hearing; there have been a lot of recent changes (shows added/changed) and sometime in the next couple of days we'll get the announcement. Stay tuned!

----- snip -----

UPDATE - 1/14@4:41PM: With the April 29th date in Albuquerque and the May 1st date in Phoenix it no longer makes sense logistically that the Moneterrey date will take place on April 30th. That would also mean 3 dates in a row which I understand they won't do anymore. My guess is that this show will take place closer to the Eastern Texas dates - probably April 20-something. I'll move it back to the regular venue list for now. We'll see what happens.

It looks like the Honda Center in Anaheim is out and the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine is in. It also looks like the Staples Center show is moving next door to the Nokia Theatre - and they'll possibly do 2 nights there. The Houston date will be at Cynthia Woods.

----- snip -----

UPDATE - 1/14@3:35PM: There are some dates/venues posted at Nokia ticketrush.com that look legit (thanks Snoscootr). According to them the Albuquerque, NM show will occur on April 29th and take place at the Journal Pavilion rather than the Tingley Coliseum. The Phoenix date will take place on May 1st at the Cricket Pavilion, and the Las Vegas gig will take place on May 10th.

UPDATE - 1/14@2:13PM: Ok. I think I have a better handle on things now. This morning I'd been hearing several conflicting days for the tour announcement; everything from later today to next Monday. From what I've been able to gather from my various sources, the announcement was delayed due to the need to finalize a few of the dates first. So there is no definitive date/time currently set for the announcement, although it should be forthcoming within the next couple of days. That's about the best I can give you on that front right now. We'll just have to wait and see. In the meantime I do have a few other updates to report.

The Kansas City date at the Starlight Theatre has been taken down from Ticketmaster although I am still hearing that it's a go. It just shouldn't have been in the system yet.

I have a date of April 19th for the New Orleans show. On the following day (April 20th) will be the Houston gig which is now a go. However the venue is now in question; it won't be at the Toyota Center but I'm not clear on where it will be. Make your own guesses on that - I'll see what I can find out. The Don Haskins Center in El Paso is also another pending date.

----- snip -----

UPDATE - 1/14@12:29PM: I'm now hearing the dates will not be announced today, but later this week - probably Friday. So you can all stop hitting refresh at the Rush.com site now. Man... you guys probably killed their server. :) More as I learn it...

UPDATE - 1/14@9:38AM: Nothing yet. Hopefully sometime today. However, I wouldn't be surprised if they're postponing the announcement a day or two. With all the last-minute changes/adds they may not have been ready. They also have a little more breathing room this go-around. For the 2007 leg tickets were going on sale the Saturday immediately following the announcement. For this leg tickets aren't set to go on sale until the Saturday after next - January 26th. I'll see what I can find out. In the meantime I guess we just wait it out.

UPDATE - 1/14@12:30AM: Well... I guess just because they posted the dates shortly after midnight last time doesn't necessarily mean they're going to do it this time. It's about 12:30 and nothing at Rush.com yet... *YAWN* I'm off to bad - I'll check back in in the morning.

Assuming our intel is correct, Rush will be announcing the official list of dates for the 2008 leg of the Snakes & Arrows tour tomorrow. If they go about it like they did for the 2007 leg, they'll be posting the dates to Rush.com shortly after midnight. So while we stand vigil I thought I'd recap what we know so far (or think we know at least).

Tomorrow we should get the official tour date announcement along with a possible new live single of Workin' Them Angels. There are also rumors of the release of a live CD and/or DVD - presumably of the Rotterdam shows.

The initial round of tickets will be going on sale on Saturday, January 26th. If the pre-sale works like it did last go-around, it will occur the week prior and we should be getting details in the next week.

We don't have as good of a handle on the dates as we did on the last leg but we do know a good bit. It looks like after kicking off in Puerto Rico on April 11th, the band will head to Florida and other points in the Southern US. Then late April and May will see the band out in the Western US. Late May into June they'll be hitting the Midwest and then points east in July. As it stands now, the South American dates will take place in August rather than May. This abrupt switch to August from May is part of the reason for a lot of the last-minute adds/changes to the tour itinerary and why a lot of the dates/venues have been so fuzzy. Here's the list in its current state. If Rush.com pulls a midnight surprise on us and posts the official dates I'll report them here.

Updates and other random Rush stuff
2:53PM EST | link | comments (42) |

I thought I'd go ahead and get my Updates and other random Rush stuff post out of the way before all hell breaks loose tomorrow. Rather than recap the tour information here, I'll be putting up a separate post later today. If you need to catch up on all the latest tour information check out this post.

RicoRoq has updated his Google Map of the '08 tour leg, indicating likely and pending venues.

Nettie let me know that Neil Peart has a new introductory video up on his website. After entering the site a short montage clip of Neil playing the drums throughout the years using music from Hemispheres plays. Maybe this is a clue as to what they might play on the 2008 tour? One can only hope. :)

About a month ago I reported that the DC branch of the Paul Green School of Rock was to perform a couple of Rush tribute shows in early January at the Santa Fe Cafe in College Park, Maryland. Reader closer2heart attended one of the shows and said it was quite a treat. You can judge for yourself by watching this video. They really tear through Working Man like a bunch of old pros. There's hope for the next generation after all! :)

Reader nposter contacted someone at Whistlestop Productions recently regarding the 5-part HD documentary series Backstage Secrets. Promos for the show should start running next week indicating show dates and times. Each one-hour episode in the series will follow various members of the Rush road crew during a typical day out on the road with the band.

Andy Olson has updated his Neil Peart site. In addition to some neat new navigation elements, he's added a postcard to the Postcards from Neil section, a new drum kit to his Replicas page, a Snakes & Arrows bass drum head replica and several new photos to his Snake & Arrows gallery.

Speaking of Andy O, both he and myself had excerpts from our reviews of Traveling Music included in the liner notes to the paperback edition of Neil Peart's Roadshow. Mine was actually from my old personal site estenger.com (currently defunct). Here's the review excerpt:

This is Neil Peart's 3rd and, in my opinion, best book to date ... [an] autobiography set to music ... He reflects on his life, where he's been and where he's going . All of this done through the use of music as a memory recollection tool. ... A great book.

And here's Andy O's review excerpt:

Traveling Music is a superb memoir ... The book travels in unexpected directions, which makes for a good read ... Can't wait 'til the next one.

Andy's full review can be read here. I'm still trying to dig up my full review from my old personal site's archives. Many thanks to reader (and fellow Northeast Ohioan) Charles K for noticing this.

UK digital radio station Planet Rock has released their end-of-year poll results and Rush took top honors in the Tour of the Year and Album of the Year categories. They were also runner-up in the Best Planet Rock Month and Rock Legend of the Year categories. Thanks to Distant Early Warning for the link.

Radio personality and Rush fan Eddie Trunk recently declared Rush's Snakes & Arrows as one of his favorite albums of 2007 in a blog post from December 30th.

One of the more popular videos of Alex Lifeson that has been floating around the internet in recent years is this early clip of him taken from the 1972 Alan King documentary Come on Children. Reader 1-2-bucklemyshoe let me know that the film is now available for purchase from the official Allan King Films website.

Speaking of video clips of Alex Lifeson, The Fwanksta alerted me to this very cool clip of Lerxst from the 1994 Kumbaya Festival. Alex plays All Along the Watchtower along with Tom Cochrane and others. You can check it out here.

Reader and Howard Stern fan Prince Sphinc-Tor let me know that this past Friday Howard was playing a best of show from back in 1991 and his guest was one of the most prolific groupies of all time - Connie Hamzy. She was on the show to promote a tell-all article she had written for Penthouse magazine. During the interview she named several rock stars she had been with including ... Geddy Lee! She mentioned it was on the tour bus a looong time ago. :)

Speaking of Geddy, reader Kallemero alerted me to the fact that Geddy Lee graces the cover of the January 2008 issue of Europe's Musiker Magazine.

Back in September I'd posted an unbelievable story (word doc 90K) from reader primemover on how he managed to obtain front-row tickets and a pair of Neil's drumsticks at last year's PNC show. He recently visited Allaire Studios where Snakes & Arrows was recorded and stuck the sticks in a snowdrift with the studio in the background. You can check out the pic here.

In this article at ESPN, Jason Sobel recounts the best golf moments of 2008 (so far). In item #6 where the best pre-tournament news conferences are discussed, he mentions one such news conference where golfer Mark Calcavecchia looks back on his career and states:

Maybe if I would have practiced a little bit harder or been in better shape, I would have won more. ... It's like losing weight. I'll lose weight in December -- no, I'll lose weight next March. Or I'm not going to drink for a month. No, I can't do that, the Rush concert is next week. It's like that my whole life. ...

I can certainly relate. :) Thanks to skullvalley for the heads up.

Spindrifter pointed me to this recent article at MLB.com on all-star catcher Mike Piazza's drum-playing hobby. He mentions Neil Peart of course.

And I'll leave you with this recently-unearthed groundbreaking video from the 80s. I always knew YYZ was missing something... sax! :) Thanks to Sean for the link.

UPDATE - 1/12@9:57PM: I'm sad to say that the Civic Center in Portland, Maine is off the list. There's also now a hold on the Smirnoff Music Center in Dallas. I'm adding that as a pending.

UPDATE - 1/12@8:22PM: I'm now hearing the Chicago show might be at the United Center rather than the Sears Centre and will happen on Monday, June 9th.

UPDATE - 1/12@3:21PM: More stuff to report. It seems that there are a lot of last-minute adds and changes taking place due to the abrupt switch of the South American dates from the beginning of the tour in May to the end in August.

First off, since that Mohegan Sun show seems to be a go - that Hartford, CT date may be in question. I'm going to keep it on the list for now but I thought I'd just give a heads up. There's also been a hold on the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia for a while now, and it now looks like that show will be happening sometime in July.

Also, I heard that KNST AM out of Tuscon mentioned this morning that Monday they'd be announcing the details regarding a Phoenix-area date as well as ... a live album from Rush! With a live album release, that would make a live Workin' Them Angels single (see update below the list) being released all the more likely. It would also give them something to promote on the tour. I can only assume it would be the live audio from Rotterdam. I guess we'll find out all the details Monday. More to come ...

----- snip -----

UPDATE - 1/12@11:38AM: Mohegan Sun Arena - Uncasville, CT, July 7th (thanks afrknob).

UPDATE - 1/11@10:25PM: One more pending venue; Walnut Creek Amphitheater in Raleigh, NC.

UPDATE - 1/11@10:17PM: I wanted to touch on one other subject related to the tour date announcement. Back in early November I'd mentioned that the band would be releasing the Workin' Them Angels single to coincide with the tour announcement, rather than releasing it last October as originally planned. I'd also mentioned they'd planned to release a video for the song which would use portions of the recordings for the live DVD that was filmed in Rotterdam. My radio sources are confirming this is still a go. So on Monday we should also expect a Workin' Them Angels single in addition to the tour announcement. Now since the video is supposed to use live footage ... and the single is to promote a tour, I have a sneaking suspicion that the single may be a live version of Workin' Them Angels - not the studio version. I always thought that song came across really well live too. More to come ...

UPDATE - 1/11@2:27PM: It looks like a date was unintentionally put into the Ticketmaster system. Here's the link - not sure how long it'll be up though. It is saying Rush will play the Starlight Theatre in Kansas City, MO on Saturday June 7th. Thanks to LVS_R for the heads up.

UPDATE - 1/11@12:31PM: More updates. The venue for the July 4th Atlantic City show is a little fuzzy. It might be at the Etess Arena at the Trump Taj Mahal instead of the Boardwalk.

The Cincinnati show will be at Riverbend - not US Bank and will happen on June 30th.

The US tour will launch on Tuesday April 15th at the Amway Arena in Orlando, FL and the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena show will be on the following day - Wednesday, April 16th.

The PNC Arts Center show will be on July 12th.

As it looks right now, late April into May will see the band out in the Western US. Then the Canadian dates will be in June. The South American dates are still on but have been pushed back towards the end of the tour in August.

More to come ...

----- snip -----

UPDATE - 1/11@8:45AM: I have several more updates and should have more throughout the day. I'll probably hold off on my regular Friday Updates post until tomorrow and just focus on the tour information today.

The Phoenix date seems to be a go right now, but it may take place at the Cricket Pavillion instead of Jobing.com Arena.

Everett Events Center in Seattle is out. The Gorge will be the Washington venue. Clark County Amphitheater in Portland has been added.

US Bank Arena in Cincinnati has been added.

----- snip -----

I've received a few more updates so I thought I'd put up a fresh post. My sources are also telling me that the official tour dates should be released via Rush.com this coming Monday, January 14th with the first round of tickets going on sale Saturday, January 26th. There's bound to be a fan pre-sale too although I haven't heard any details yet. For the first leg, dates were announced on a Monday and the pre-sale began the next day, with regular tickets on sale the following Saturday. It sounds like maybe they'll give us a little breathing room first this time between the announcement and when tickets go on sale. We'll see.

I have a couple of venue updates to make since my last update. First off, the Saratoga Springs at the SPAC is out. I'm also sad to say that Fairbanks, Alaska is off the list. They are trying to see if they can get another venue up there but it's looking unlikely. However, Foro Sol in Mexico City has been added. So Mexico seems to have nailed 2 shows this go-around.

Here's the updated list. More as I learn it.

(list has been moved up towards top of post)

Conan O'Brien Rush sighting
9:38AM EST | link | comments (26) |

Conan O'Brien with associate producer and Rush fan JordanUPDATE - 1/10@2:46PM: After watching it I updated the transcript to be a bit more accurate.

UPDATE - 1/10@2:24PM: Hey! It's up on the NBC site already at this link (thanks AnthemOwl) and choose the Jan. 9th Wednesday show.

Last night's (January 9th) episode of Late Night with Conan O'Brien contained a pretty significant Rush reference. In one taped skit Conan interviews his associate producer Jordan Slansky. Here's a paraphrased transcript of the interview courtesy reader krlowe:

CONAN: What's your favorite rock band.. or one of your favorite rock bands?
JORDAN: My favorite rock band would have to be Rush.
CONAN: I'm thinkin' what's a Rush song?
JORDAN: Their most famous song is Tom Sawyer.

They then play the chorus of Tom Sawyer with the group photo from the 2112 album (with the kimonos) coming towards the screen.

CONAN: Their lead singer Geddy Lee has kind of a funny voice, doesn't he?
JORDAN: He has an unusual voice.
CONAN: Is it pleasing to you?
JORDAN: It doesn't annoy me.
CONAN: What's that song?...

Conan then makes a poor attempt at singing Limelight.

CONAN: Isn't that one of their songs?
JORDAN: I don't think so.
CONAN: Besides Tom Sawyer what is there?
JORDAN: Well that whole album [Moving Pictures] is pretty famous ... Limelight.
CONAN: Well how's that go? Sing it.

Jordan then sings Limelight.

CONAN: That is the one I'm singing! ...

Then Conan attempts to sing the song again.

JORDAN: Umm ... no I sang it right - you didn't"

The interview segment continues, touching on other subjects. They then bring Jordan out onto the live stage while the band plays a version of Limelight. They sit down...

CONAN: I love how you stood and basked in the Limelight. Isn't that one of your Rush songs?

There's no video of this up online yet that I could find. But NBC posts the complete episodes a few days after they air. The January 9th episode should be up by this weekend. Thanks to everybody who emailed me about this.

Rush Bobbleheads back on sale at Rush Backstage Club
1:30PM EST | link | comments (21) |

Rush bobbleheadsUPDATE - 1/10@8:45AM: Reader rushman702 points out that the bobbleheads were actually first seen on Geddy's amps on the Vapor Trails tour. I was just saying that they were made famous by their appearance in the Darn that Dragon video. :) I also don't think they were available for sale until after the R30 tour.

I've received several emails over the last few days regarding the fact that the Rush Backstage Club has brought back the Rush Bobblehead Dolls due to popular demand. These bobblehead dolls were made famous back on the R30 tour when they were featured in the intermission video Darn That Dragon (watch it here). The Rush Backstage Club had them for sale for a while but eventually discontinued the item much to the chagrin of fans. They were in such high demand that some were going for several hundred dollars on eBay. Well, they're now available once again for the low price of $59.99. Here's the description from the site:

The Bobbles are back! Due to overwhelming demand, we have brought back the Rush Bobblehead Dolls. These dolls are polyresin ceramic, which is the highest quality bobblehead on the market. Measuring 7" high (approx. 18cm), these dolls have heads that bobble back and forth, kinda like seeing the guys on stage! Each set consists of three dolls (Geddy, Alex, and Neil) in a custom printed RUSH box. These were designed with a "vintage" Rush in mind, from the time when the band wore chinese robes, played double neck guitars, and Neil had the most amazing moustache in rock music. These bobbleheads are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.

How much you want to bet that these will sell out very quickly. Get 'em while they're hot! :)

Permanent Waves Ultradisc update
1:16PM EST | link | comments (10) |

Yesterday marked the official release of the Permanent Waves Ultradisc II 24 KT Gold CD by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs (MoFi), although it had already been shipping from MoFi since mid-December. It can now be purchased through other vendors such as Amazon. This numbered, limited-edition CD is packaged in a heavy stock cardboard gatefold replicating the original vinyl album packaging. The disc itself is in a soft cloth sleeve which slips into the gatefold along with the CD booklet and a MoFi technical data sheet. Reports from readers who have purchased the CD say the sound quality is outstanding but reactions regarding the packaging are mixed. MoFi's 180g Vinyl LP version of the album is also now available with pre-ordered copies having already shipped.

Rush 2008 Snakes & Arrows tour dates update
3:04PM EST | link | comments (83) |

Rush Snakes & Arrows TourUPDATE - 1/10@5:33PM: I've put up a new post. Please check the new post for further updates.

UPDATE - 1/10@8:53AM: Foro Sol in Mexico City is IN. So Mexico seems to have nailed 2 shows this go-around. Also I'm sad to say that Fairbanks, Alaska is off the list. They are trying to see if they can get another venue up there but it's looking unlikely. Official dates should be up on Rush.com next week.

UPDATE - 1/10@8:34AM: Quick update... SPAC in Saratoga Springs is out.

UPDATE - 1/7@5:21PM: A couple folks pointed out that it doesn't make sense that they'd play the May 1st Chile date the day immediately following the Mexico date. They're right - that info is outdated. I'm now hearing that the South American dates are more likely to take place sometime in April after the Puerto Rico show. So I'm moving those 2 dates back into the regular venues list without dates for the time being.

My old post with my original list of venues and dates for the 2008 leg of the Snakes & Arrows tour is getting a bit convoluted with updates. So I thought it was high time I put up an updated post, reorganize things a little and highlight some of the more recent updates.

In the past week we learned that Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids is off the list to be replaced by Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. This show is now set to take place on June 10th. We also learned that the band has put a hold on the Idaho Center in Boise, Idaho. In addition, a date has been set for the Monterrey, Mexico show for April 30. I've also been assured that the South American dates will happen, so there's nothing to worry about on that front. I'm unsure why those Chilean papers reported that the dates were in question.

So here's the list so far. I've broken out all the venues for which I have dates, and also the venues that are pending. However, at this point pretty much every date/venue should be considered pending until we get the official tour date announcement from the band. I'll keep updating this post as I find out more.

Trailer Park Boys movie to be released in the US
9:57PM EST | link | comments (43) |

In October of 2006 the popular Candian TV show the Trailer Park Boys made its big screen debut in Canada. In December 2006 the news came out that Myriad Pictures of Los Angeles had purchased U.S. and world rights (excluding Canada) for the movie and planned to put the film into commercial release last year. This obviously failed to materialize but it now looks like there is finally some movement on this front. There's an official website up touting the release of the film to US theaters this coming January 25th. No details as to theaters or showtimes yet though. Thanks to Joe P for the heads up.

Updates and other random Rush stuff
11:40AM EST | link | comments (56) |

UPDATE - 1/10@9:18PM: Reader DawgTrappedInIndy pointed out that the Gibson list is in alphabetical order, not ranked in any way.

UPDATE - 1/4@7:36PM: CORRECTION: That Gibson list is now the top 30 albums of 2007 (I swear it was just 20 yesterday... either that or my cold meds are starting to get the best of me). And Snakes & Arrows is on there at #21. They have a nice writeup too. Thanks to tcshan2112 for spotting that.

UPDATE - 1/4@1:13PM: I thought I'd emphasize something concerning the potential Idaho Center show I mentioned. Just because the band puts a hold on venue does not guarantee they will play there. For this tour it's likely the band will put up to 60 or 70 venues on hold, but will only actually end up playing 40-45 of those. I just want to make sure everyone is aware of this. Pretty much all of these venues should be considered pending until the official tour announcement by the band.

Happy New Year everyone! It stands to be another great year for Rush and its fans. Within the next 2 weeks we should be getting the official announcement of the 2008 tour dates, venues and ticket information. In the meantime I expect to get a bit more advance info regarding venues and dates. And I actually already have a few venue updates to report; Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids is out, Joe Louis Arena in Detroit is in, and the Idaho Center in Boise, Idaho is another Pending date (thanks Brian B). I've updated the current venue list and should have a post up in the next few days with a few more updates. And for all my South American readers - I have it on good authority that the South American dates will happen, so there's nothing to worry about on that front. I'm unsure what all the hubbub in the Chilean papers was about.

I let you know earlier this week that you can now listen online to the new Tiles track which features Alex Lifeson - Sacred & Mundane. It's available on the band's website at this location. The band's new album Fly Paper will be released in North America on January 29th. According to Blabbermouth, the band have scheduled an in-store appearance on Saturday, February 2nd at Record Time in Roseville, Michigan where they will play a casual 45-minute set at approximately 6PM and sign copies of the new album. Tiles's official CD-release party for Fly Paper will be held on Sunday, March 9 at the Magic Bag in Detroit.

Yesterday saw the release of Limelight for the Rock Band video game. The song is now available for download on the PlayStation Network.

Alex Lifeson's backstage video interview included with the December 2007 issue of Guitarist magazine is now up on YouTube.

In the last poll I asked which of the Snakes & Arrows songs played on the 1st leg would you most like to see dropped on the 2nd leg. Spindrift came way out on top with 36% and The Larger Bowl had 18%. None of the above took the 3rd spot with 15% of the vote and The Way the Wind Blows had 12%. The rest all came in at under 5%. For this next poll I thought I'd just ask what everyone's favorite live album is. Take the poll and let us know.

Power Windows recently reported this bit of news regarding a new compilation album from Godsmack that was released last month. It's titled Good Times, Bad Times: 10 Years of Godsmack and among the sixteen included tracks is the Neil Peart-inspired song Serenity. The package also includes a 75-minute DVD titled An Evening With Godsmack which features a recent acoustic performance filmed at the House of Blues in Las Vegas. During a Q&A with the crowd, Sully Erna explains that Serenity was written after reading Neil Peart's book Ghost Rider: Travels On The Healing Road. Sully gives the audience a short synopsis of Neil's tragic story and then goes on to credit Neil as being an important influence on himself and fellow Godsmack drummer Shannon Larkin.

Reader Lamb Saag made a very cool photo to go along with the Lost Power Windows Demo Tape. It's ideal for use as the album art for the demo in iTunes or similar programs. Here's the link to the full-res jpeg.

Grizz over at Counterparts wanted me to let you know about his new radio show on Ashland, Oregon's community radio station KSKQ. It's called New Radio Order and airs Saturdays from Noon to 3PM PST (9-12 EST). Each week he features a couple or three artists, usually at least one whole album, and some short talk segments. This week is all Rush and he'll be playing the solo albums; Victor and My Favorite Headache. And yes, they stream.

There are a few more end-of-year lists to report on.

Reader 1-2-bucklemyshoe let me know that Rock 107 out of Scranton, PA counted down the 1007 top classic rock songs of all time over the holidays. Rush made the list 11 times including The Spirit of Radio at #87 and Tom Sawyer at #196. You can check out the entire list at this link.

Lance The Shred pointed me to a Classic Rock Revisited survey of the Top 50 Live Albums of all time. They listed their own picks along with their readers' picks. Their list included Exit... Stage Left at #8 and All The World's A Stage was 12th. On the reader list, All The World's A Stage was 15th and Exit... Stage Left made the cut at #21. You can check out the entire list at this link.

And here's a list from Gibson Guitars of the top 20 albums of 2007 that dared to not include Rush! Luckily there's an email address listed so you can let them know how that makes you feel. :) Thanks to briano for the heads up.

Have a great weekend!

Alex Lifeson Guitarist Magazine video interview now online
2:10PM EST | link | comments (24) |

Several weeks ago I mentioned that the December 2007 issue of Guitarist magazine (issue #297) featured an interview with Alex Lifeson. The issue also included a backstage video of Alex talking about the tour and showing off all of his gear. Brendan1234 let me know that the video is now up on YouTube. I've included it below too.

Limelight to be available for Rock Band via download
1:38PM EST | link | comments (24) |

The Rock Band video game from Harmonix Music Systems released late last year to much fanfare. The game built on the success of its Guitar Hero predecessors, adding vocals and drums to the mix thus allowing players to create a virtual rock band. While the Guitar Hero 2 game included Rush's YYZ, Rock Band includes the Rush classic Tom Sawyer along with dozens of other rock songs from the 60s on up through the present day. Harmonix has promised to release new songs for the game on a weekly basis and just announced that Rush's Limelight will be available for download this week. Like the Tom Sawyer song included with the game, it will unfortunately be a cover version and not the original. The song is expected to hit the PlayStation Network sometime tomorrow. Thanks to showdonttell25 for the heads up.
